salvation comes at a price
Marcus nodded his head when Sinclair said he might ask for Wick's help later, "This is clearly more important. If you think he can help, he will help." He wasn't asking, because he knew everyone would give everything to make this work. He had doubted before, and it had cost everyone very dearly. His doubt could still get everyone on here killed. Kane felt he owed it to everyone to make sure that as many made it to the ground as he could.
"This isn't the way any of us thought it would happen. I hadn't planned on ever seeing it." He admitted, knowing that before he had assumed that he was only trying to keep the human race alive long enough for the future ones to deal with trying to get them to the ground. "I didn't really believe in the plan to send the kids down. I didn't believe Abby when she pushed to prove they were alive. I had thought we'd end up having to . . . . " Keep killing their own. "I'm glad I was wrong." He knew there was some that still blamed him, but right now they had more important things to deal with.

salvation comes at a price
Strep. She had told him that someone had gotten strep and he needed to be inoculated. Marcus was angry. He didn't wear his anger like he had in this youth, so the only signs that he was angry was in his still he was. His expression and tight shoulders. She'd lied to him. He wasn't surprised that she had lied to him, but he was angry she had done it. The lost of her daughter had softened him for a moment while he was arresting her, but when the damn pod launched he wanted to shake her. The kids were not going to make it. Earth was not livable. She had sent one more person down to die, and all to stop him from trying to save the rest of the people! It was bad enough that she had Jaha abstaining his vote, and they were waiting a few more days!
They had gone a week with no deaths, and he had thought her up to something when she had gone to Mecca station 9 times, but finding out this? He took a deep breath, to calm himself. Nigel had sold her out. He had been trying to float her for years, and Abigail knew it. She had risked everything for a lost cause and he was angry she couldn't see that.
Pushing open the door to the room she was being held in he walked briskly to the table and leaned on it, so he towered over her. "The people are getting restless because once again something launched to Earth." She had done this. Stirred the pot. He had told her in the hallway that he could try to save her, and Raven (as Marcus didn't want to see her floated, just out of his way) but after what she had done he didn't see how. Jaha had used his powers though, and once again Abigail was saved from being floated. It left Marcus wondering, again, what their relationship was. "Was her life worth it? Was your life worth it?" Damn it! He knew she was hurting because of her daughter, but he she wanted to save people he had told her how!

i had the same fears
He had not been gone for an extended time. Days he thought, but he didn't know for sure. It was hard to keep track when he couldn't see the sun. Kane a gone to talk to the commander and look for the kids. He had hoped to make peace after the kids here had made war. Instead, just moments after he sent the two men with him back to camp, the grounder prisoner turned on him and kicked him in the head. Marcus didn't awaken until he was being forced to walk with a bag over his head. They pulled it off and dumped him into a holding cell--and for the first time in his life he was speachless, because Jaha walked out of the shadows.
The grounders had sent a girl in to make sure one fo the killed the other, only she had been no mere girl but THE commander and she had told Marcus that she thought him honorable, and his desire for peace was true. She had been less pleased with Jaha and they had beaten him, before sending him away. And so, Marcus became a guest of the commander. He respected her power, even if her demands were troubling ones for she wanted Finn's life. She wanted peace, and he wanted to help give that and if possible, keep Finn from dying their way.
And so, she sent him back to his own camp to make sure they gave up Finn. What Marcus found, was chaos. Jaha was locked up for treason, Abby had the people ready to fight a war--when none of them had seen a war before. They had fought in the council chamber, but nothing had really been decided. So now he moved to medical, and pulled off his jacket. He had slit his own wrist so Jaha would not have to kill him, and he needed it looked at. He also planned to ask Abby what she planned to do, and try to talk some reason into her.

a time to heal and move onwards
It had been a hard four weeks since the fall of the mountain, but their people were coming out strong. Marcus stood at the doorway into the Ark and watched as a group of them were making a garden, while others were working on a well. The wall was becoming thicker to protect them, but the truce was holding. It seemed they had finally found peace. Marcus hoped it would last. They needed some hope right now. After everything they had seen and done since landing on Earth, everyone needed some peace.
Which brought his mind to Abby. And she had become Abby more then Abigail or Dr. Griffin in his mind since they had almost died on the Ark. He hoped she wasn't in any pain. She was so beautifully stubborn! The men in the mountain had drilled her (a sight that still gave him nightmares), and he was hoping that with the time that had past the pain was lessening. Though with her he couldn't quite tell what she was pushing through and how much pain she actuality felt. They had come so far since their battles for power on the Ark. He never dismissed what he did to her, or how close he came to killing the woman he now valued above most other people here . . . That was a lie. He knew that he loved her. The moment he had seen her on the table, he had known---she was something more then a friend.
Marcus Kane just didn't know what that was yet.

i can't know how you feel
Marcus both agreed with and hated the idea. Ever since Jake Griffin had found the flaw which would eventually kill them all, the plan of 'how to save the human race' had been something they were desperately trying to find. The plan was suggested that they send some people down to discover if the Earth was livable. Marcus agreed with this part. He didn't think it was, he was a believer of science and facts and every project they had run said the year needed more time. He was willing to try it if it meant they MIGHT have been wrong. It was also suggested that they send people down who would not have been of value to the whole. With this, Marcus agreed. He didn't want the best of everything going down, because when they died of radiation then the knowledge would be lost.
Where he disagreed with, was sending a bunch of kids down. The every idea was against logic and reason. IF the Earth was survivable--what then? The were kids with no knowledge, and most of them violent. However, Marcus was one to pick his battles. He would send the kids down, and it would give the Ark a few more months of air. He didn't like it, but he would see it done. Even if they sent others, eventually they would be right back at looking at them again.
It had been a busy day int the medical bay, which was why Abigail Griffin had not come tot he council meeting. That, and because it had been known her daughter was one of the ones who would be sent down. Believing her vote to be compromised, she had not been told about the meeting. Walking down the hall to her rooms, Marcus heard the thud of his boots echo slightly against the metal hallways. Ominous thuds that warned of bad news. He paused outside her door before pressing the pad of keys there. While he could easily just walk in if he wanted, as the head of the guard he had access to every area on the Ark, he instead buzzed to let her know he was here. |

something that was missing til now
Marcus watched her face, waiting for the moment she would confirm what he already was (almost) sure of in his mind. "Amelia," she said, and the room moved slightly turning, almost spinning behind her. "You knew her didn't you?" Knew her. Cared for her. Marcus nodded silently, and took a step backwards, turning to look away from her for a moment, while his hand ran over his face. He hadn't known she was pregnant. She had been apart of the his mother's faith and he had pulled away from it, and in doing so her as well. He hadn't known . . . was that why she did it?! Had he pushed her toward it?
The thoughts didn't leave him, even as others took the the louder stance in his mind. He had a daughter. He sucked in a deep breath before turning only his face toward her, not sure what expression was on it any more. His daughter. He had a daughter. "I knew her," he managed to tell his daughter. It was then he realized who she was--the commander. Marcus looked around the room while thinking of what she had build, and he was both so incredibly proud of her, and sad . . . because he couldn't see her do it, and he couldn't have protected her while doing it. He thought of when he first meet her, and she pretended to be an injured or weak girl to learn more about them, he thought about Finn, he replayed everything that had happened in his head, taking on a new light--because no longer was she the commander that he respected and was impressed by . . . but his daughter.
He knew he was acting oddly, and he needed to explain. He wanted to explain. One of the biggest regrets in his life was a newest one. When he came to Earth, he realized that he wanted a family. He knew he had given up his chances at having them. First with Aurora, and then Amelia and last Callie. Three women in his past that he cared for. He had 'let them go' when they got too close because he was driven by his career. Because he couldn't open up himself. Now, on the ground he kept wishing he had a child to share things with--a family.
And now he had a daughter. One he had missed her childhood, but he knew in that moment, while looking at her, that he would not miss anything else. "I knew her very well, once." His voice was stronger now that he had made his mind. Turning toward her, Marcus stepped closer. "Lexa . . . . I'm your father." He told her, willing to explain if she asked, but right now, he needed to know how she would react to that.

something that was missing til now
"I'm glad you were able to come back to earth. Even if it hasn't been easy between our people. For that I can only apologize." Marcus held up his free hand to stop her words, but not in a command. It was more an act of a friend, who didn't wish to dwell over their shared past mistakes. "We have both made errors, but like any great leader we have learned from them and moved to bring peace between our people. We should not dwell on the past, but look to the future between our people." Which was what he was trying to do now. He felt he had made very many mistakes int he past, having killed over 300 of his own people in attempt to keep others alive. He understood the need to keep her people safe, for he had done the same. He would not hold it against her.
"Were you able to bring the last Tree back to earth?" Marcus gave a single nod, but it took him a moment to speak after her question. Mostly because it reminded him of his mother--this whole conversation was reminding him of people he had lost. Not just his mother, but a friend from his childhood whom had also worked with him when he was apart of the religion. "Yes, it was replanted not far from Arkadia when we first landed, though there are some that still go to check on it." He didn't go into detail of him being the one who planted it, and that he often visits it as well, though more to pay respects to the memory of his mother rather then because he was a believer.
He listened as she explained about her mother, and he felt his heart beating harder. His mind didn't think the words, but he was beginning to wonder. Who was her mother? He had to have known her. "--she told them that it was a reminder of the better days of her youth." If she had spent time in her youth taking care of the tree, and had gone to Earth . . . he only knew of who person who had both been apart of the religion and had attempted to take their own life by going to Earth during the last almost 30 years. He eyes moved from the patch that he held, and to Lexa's face. He looked at her eyes, and the shape of her face, and thought about the way she was very logical. "It's the only thing I have of her." Because her mother had died coming to Earth while pregnant.
He held it out for her to take, knowing that if this was all she had of her mother, then she should keep it close--just like he did with his mother's tree. He understood that. When she reached to take it, his fingers wrapped around her's for a moment, "Do you know her name?" He asked in shaken voice. "I need to know her name." Because the only girl he could think of that both went to Earth, and had been apart of people who took comfort in the tree--was also the woman he had cared for, and if they were indeed the same person . . .
. . . then he knew who Lexa's father was, and he wasn't sure how to take that news.

salvation comes at a price
Marcus was pleased to see Sinclair's reaction to Raven being alive. He hoped that finding Sinclair's old student would give him hope for finding his wife, or at least give him something to keep working toward. For that, he needed Raven to live--though knowing what he did about her efforts to get to the ground, he knew her mind would be something they needed down here; so he was hoping the vibrate young woman stayed alive for that. She had managed to get to Earth alive--something not many could have done. The reports about her feats on the ground impressed him, and he knew she would be one to help everyone survive--if she could survive.
"She is badly injured, but once she is out of surgery, you can do see her." From what Abby had said, it wasn't an am easy surgery. There would be nothing to push Raven under with, so she would feel everything. "She was shot, and the bullet is near her spine." Kane added on gently, not wanting to scare Sinclair anymore then he had too. "Dr. Griffin is with her now. Once we know something for sure, I will have someone come and get you to take you too her. I am sure it will make her feel better to see you made it too."

salvation comes at a price
Marcus didn't envy the man the a task that was before him. It was perhaps the hardest thing they had asked of any of them thus far. Instead of spending time with his wife, he was here trying to decide on what parts of the Ark was strong enough to withstand reentry, and where the most people would be in order to stay alive. One small miscalculation and he could get everyone killed. Hundreds of lives weighted on his shoulders, so Marcus did not intend to rush him.
"Yes, we need you too keep trying." He told him, but didn't push him to keep working. "Anything you need to help you, will be given. We have an engineer we found, Wick, who can help if needed. Right now we have him ripping through most the Ark to find anything useful for the ground." Marcus was sorting the people, making sure that there was a bit of everyone in each section. Most the stations would remain in tack, farm would go down with farm--but there was some people who might need to move around if they were willing. SO that if they landed apart each station had what they needed to survive.

something that was missing til now
"They will be safe and they will be welcome with open arms." That was good news, one that he would be grateful for once he was able to think clearly again. Right now it was still holding onto the patch, and trying to figure out where it had come from. Even her comment on the spirit of the commander didn't distract him, though that topic was one he had often tried to learn more about. Their chain of command and politics fascinated him, and he was always eager to learn more. The way the have blended the survival of the fittest and an almost Ark-ish style had always made him want to see it in action.
But the patch, holding the sybol of the last tree was one of meaning for him, and it kept him from taking her opening and trying to learn more from her on her people, and their government style. "It was my mother's. She gave it to me before she died." Her mothers. He could assume that the woman had died before his people came down, since he had not seen or heard anything about the commander's mother. He could be wrong, but logic was one of Marcus' strengths. Which meant that the patch would not have come from anyone recently come to Earth.
The tail of thinking could lead him to even assume that meant that it came from one of the ones who 'jumped ship' or tried to take their own life by going to Earth. His eyes closed for a moment, as he tried not to think of the woman he had known, and even had cared for as best as he could in his arrogant youth, that had done it. He opened them, and was surprised to see how much he could see on her face. It wasn't often that Lexa allowed emotion to be shown. Like him, she knew she had to rule with logic and her head.
"You know the symbol? What it means?" He swallowed deeply, as his moth had gone dry. "It's a symbol of a religion of my people. From where we are from. Our ancestors had not been on Earth when the bombs went off, and one of the stations had a Tree. It was called the last tree. It gave many hope that one day we would be able to return to Earth." His own mother had clung to the religion, taking up with it during her time with his father who had been totalitarian in his control over his family. When his father was floated, she gave her life over to it. While Marcus had moved away from it. "How did your mother come by it?" He asked, while his thumb still moved over the ridges, feeling the tree sewn in.

something that was missing til now
Marcus came to a rest by the small table, and looked down at the items there just as he had finished speaking. Lexa began explaining things to him, words he had wanted to hear. She was being fair to his people, and welcoming. They would have to follow her command, but they would not be without their rights. The choice had already been made, but he still weighted the words in his mind. What it would mean for his people, and what this would give them. Protection. Life here. He had entered the city and stared at it's wonders, and he wanted that hope and build for his own people. He wanted to create something far grander then he had the ability to do alone. It was why he wanted this. They'd gain more then they'd give up.
While she spoke he was looking at the object there, and something caught his eye. Marcus stared at it while she spoke, and her voice faded tot he background for a moment. He knew he should not ignore even one of her words, but there on the table was what looked like the remains of a patch, and the tree was sewn into it. The Tree. The one his mother had served so strongly until her death. The one she had died asking him to bring here. The one he had re-planted in her memory. The Tree.
Moving to pick it up, he ran his thumb over the patchwork, noticing how old it was. Marcus had once been apart of his mother's religion, before he pulled away from both it and her. He knew that the symbol hadn't originated until the Ark. Looking up at her, he managed to reply to what she had been saying, though he hadn't been aware he was listening. "I agree," he said, but his voice had lost the calm assureness it normally carried. "I will encourage my people to travel here, knowing they will be welcome. Let them see what we can become together, and I believe that we can achieve peace, and more, by helping our peoples unite."
"Your people speak highly of you, and you have done nothing but prove their words." He valued that in an ally. If her people had resented her, then why would he become one of them? "Thank you for that." Marcus turned toward her, and held up the patch. "Can I asked how you came of this?" He asked curious as to how she had it. His mind, though logical, couldn't think of how she could have one. He'd not seen one since before the Ark came to Earth.

something that was missing til now
Marcus knew the if his people were going to survive, they needed to do more then just make peace. They needed to build trade, and worth. They needed to learn how to farm and survive the winter. They needed to learn how to survive on more then guns and bullets which would one day run out. The men from mount weather had functioned on their own, and he wanted to learn what he could from them, but it would take more. Lexa was offering for them to join the grounders. It would give them the protection from others, and help them build the needed enterprises that would bring in the goods they couldn't to keep his people from going hungry.
The meeting had just ended, and Marcus hesitated in the room to speak with Lexa leader to leader. He had come to respect the woman, and value her guidance. He was concerned, yes, that she had left them at the gates of mount weather; but he also knew that leaders didn't often have the choice of making everyone happy. He had held the people's favor, and he had lost the people's favor in his time as a leader but he had never stopped fighting for them. Joining the clans would mean she would now do that for his people.
She questioned why he was still here, and Marcus looked around the room, stalling for a moment before questioning. "This is an impressive city," he began by admitting, "and the collation that you have built here is unlike any other. You should be proud." But he wanted more information on it. "It is very unlike the tree nation people we have meet before. I am concerned my people will only see the ruthless warriors they fought, and not the world here. As members of the collation, I want to know more about our right, and lands. I need to be able to go back and speak to my people with answer to all they might ask." He was hoping she could fill him in on more. "I would also like learn more about the world here. There is so much that we couldn't have imagined." He gestured around the room walking toward a small table. "I want my people to see the city. I want them to know what we can be if we worked together."

salvation comes at a price
"Sometimes it's the most unassuming that you must look out for." A lesson that Marcus would not soon forget. While he had not thought the grounders simpletons, he had falsely assumed that they had regressed from civilization. He had assumed their tactics were rudimentary. He was quickly learning how far it was from the truth. They fought smartly, and it was only their brutality that he didn't admire. The rest had him keenly observing.
She spoke of how he should be able to understand how she needed to ensure the safety of her people, and he did. Just as he wanted the safety of his. Surely that meant avoiding a war. However, as she had said before, there was eighteen dead because on of his men had gone into a village. He didn't know who or why. He had ordered most the weapons be be locked up, and only the guard to have them. He was beginning to wonder if there had been someone working against that. . . . no . . . not someone. Abby. Damn it! She had given the kids guns and sent them to find her daughter. THIS was why that was a bad idea! He wasn't even sure that had been what she was talking about, but he didn't know what else it might be. He needed more information!
"If you wish to speak for your people then speak. I also do not wish for war, but jus drein jus daun." Marcus frowned slightly, at the unfamiliar words, but when she clarified, the weight of them removed the frown, as he braced for how this might end. "Blood must have blood." She wanted someone to pay. Marcus looked down for a moment, schooling his words in his head before he looked back up and spoke to her once more. "That is a tragedy. I did not know this happened before I came, and I can assure you that my people have laws. Murder, of anyone, does not go unpunished. I cannot explain what happened, without trying to talk to the ones who did it, but with Jaha returning, I know he will see justice served." Whatever that may be at this time.
"The fault lies with me." He gave her someone to blame, and he did blame himself too, but right now she needed someone to blame. "We sent 100 children down here, and things escalated between our people. This has led to both sides killing each other. I want to break this cycle. My people will not let this go. Once the person who did this is punished, I hope we can move forward."

we do not have to be enemies
"Well clearly your books can not capture the true glory of Azgeda." Clearly she didn't enjoy reading. Marcus took in how her fingers drummed on the throne she sat at, and he could tell he would have to watch his words well with her. She would not take an insult--even ones he didn't mean to make--well. "Only your experience here can do that." Very true. They never could have imagined THIS when the looked down on the Earth. He had thought it barren of life, but how wrong he was! Marcus was thrilled to find out he was wrong, and he loved seeing the world, and other places. It energized and awoken him! He wanted peace between the nations, so that he could learn from them, and they could all thrive together.
"I agree. No book could ever have prepared me for the fascinating land you have here. When I first heard of Azgeda, it was spoken with a relevance--" and a lot of fear and hate "--and I found myself curious of the people who had such a presence." He looked around the large room, one that was far larger then any single room on the Ark, before looking back at the Queen, with a small grin, "I find myself not unimpressed." He was very impressed.
"How many accompanied you?" He wanted to know who was in her lands. Wise. He had no reason to lie. "I only came with a small group of eight, myself among them. We left our guns at your border, as they were only there to protect us from animal threats." They had left the other weapons until forced to remove them. Marcus wanted to be clear about why he was here. "I am very grateful to be here. My people are new to the Earth, and your people have long mastered the way of life here. There is much we can learn from you. I hope that we are able to come to some form of peace." And that the cost would not be high.

salvation comes at a price
"Does that surprise you?" She asked, and Marcus debated on his reply. He was a logical man, and had played the political games on the Ark for years. He knew that insulting the woman before him would get him no where. So he would not speak on her age, or even his surprise that she had done so much for someone so young. When the others had spoken of a commander, he had thought of an old man or woman, with a battle worn face. "Yes," he admitted, because he would not lie to her. "I had not expected the fragile girl to be a commander of an army." In truth, the tactic was brilliant! Marcus was greatly impressed by that. She had learned everything she wanted by letting the old men dismiss her presence! It had been a smart move.
"You want to know whether I have ordered his execution or if he will live to see another sunrise." He did! He really did! Jaha and Marcus had not always seen eye to eye but they were friends. He respected the wisdom of his friend, even if he didn't always agree to the fact that Jaha broke rules, and followed others. "I have a message for Skaikru. And he will deliver it. I have ordered that he arrives there safely." Marcus exhaled, and breathed in a deep breath, unaware that he had been holding it in slightly until she spoke. Good! Jaha could get back to their people, and he and Abby could deal with things. "You are more worried for him than yourself? A noble but pointless sentiment." Sentiment.
In truth, Marcus hadn't thought about his own life, or what would be happening to HIM after Jaha was dealt with. He still didn't know. It was her word, sentiment that almost made him laugh ironically, though he didn't. Jaha had told him once, that he was unaffected by sentiment. Now he was being told he held some for Jaha. Ironic indeed. The words then had hurt, but now he didn't dewel on it. "I worry about all my people, before myself." He began, "I want to protect them, as I can tell you want for your people." If he could work out some sort of understanding with her, maybe there could be peace and a future between the people. "Allow me to speak for my people, and explain what has happened before. We don't want a war." He hoped she would be open to talking with him. He wanted to learn more about her people, and try to live in coexistence with them,
