He smirked at that. "Well, yeah, given how we had to work, a bit of carefulness never hurts." The electrician agreed. He was, one of the last of his people to survive after all, so working with him might become difficult at times. Especially since he knew of his on expiration date already, or a rough estimate of it. Unless there was a way to cure him, after all. He doubted they would find time for that, with the constant wars going on and stuff like that. No nobody would be able to even look into it. They had an entire population to look after. He was just one soul, with almost invaluable knowledge, yes, but data in Arkadia could provide them with the essentials and he still had time to teach someone.
"Trust me, bud, the docs have more important stuff to do than to look after a stupid cough." he pointed out. "Like making sure we all survive. It's just a cough." Well this was, it was not a primary symptom of his defect, so, that was that. "And lucky me, the wires won't get infected and shrivel by being coughed upon, so work is a safe place to be. Then again imagine Alpha Station coughing. That would be a sight to behold. So...you are the overall boss her now, right?"

Alex grinned. Yeah, it was quite amusing to him to see how this man reacted. It was adorable really. Alex didn't have much time with other workers of other stations. Tesla was safe. Tesla was what he loved and adored and what was slowly killing him. Earth made it better, but he had the feeling it was just a speed bump. Things would change again. Peace was an illusion in this world. And he hated that illusion more than anything. Eventually he would leave this world and he would leave his girlfriend behind. It hurt him more than he could tell.
"Actually, no." Alex replied. "We couldn't work like that even if we wanted. Imagine us turning everything in Tesla off. Everyone would have died. I once had to climb and fix a live generator. THAT was fun." And he was admittedly strange. But there was no way to work on Tesla and not work with electricity still running. "We have protective gear for this usually. Down here I can have the luxury of turning things off - or slightly. I kinda like knowing where the current runs. It's just a matter of working." As he said that he had to cough. Luckily it was really just that.

After the revelation of the list Alex pulled away from everyone. It wasn't even that he wasn't on the list. It was something else that made him feel like he had just gotten a punch to the gut. It was the fact that he stood there, listening to the list, listening to who was on it and who not and ultimately why he wasn't on it - probably as he had no chance to talk to Clarke yet. It was the thing that he was sick. His time was limited. He knew that. Being locked in Arkadia, it would seal his fate. The only reason why he was no deteriorating faster was because of the air here. It was so much better than processed air with multiple unnatural germs in it.
He made his way to his rooms, his and Fayes. He knew this would have an impact on her, too and sure enough he could not look at her as she entered the room. "I'm telling them to give my chance to be in Arkadia to you. Clarke was right to leave me of the list. With only 100 places left your survival is much more important than mine." It was what he could do, what he might have to do.

Alex moved gently, so he could lay heir son on her chest and move to lay half next to her. The bed was not fit for two - well three technically - but they made due. He lifted her upper body - supporting the baby - so he could curl his arm around her and hold them both at the same time. Their son curled his little toes. It was adorable. And finally, or already, Faye mentioned a name. The boy seemed content with that choice. And Alex, well he was happy with her idea, too. It was an honor. Jace Alexander. It felt perfect.
"Well then hello little Jace. You fit right in with us. Faye and Alex and Jace. We fit perfectly." He smiled. He kissed the top of his Fayes head, his hand - gigantic in comparison - on their sons back. He was perfect. "I think the three of us fit just perfectly. Right, Jace?" He asked that baby boy. "And since we're on the ground, I bet we will make you a big brother, too. Agreed?" That was if Faye was up for it.

"Oh that is covered." He whispered as he moved to kiss her forehead. "You got him during the day, I got him during the nights - unless he wants to nurse, obviously. I can't give him milk." That was Fayes honor all alone. He would change diapers though and clean them. He could do that and sing the lil kid to sleep if he decided to like his fathers singing voice. He'd do whatever he could to make them both feel loved and valued. For as long as he could do exactly that. Alex ran his hand through her hair again. He was desperate to take both of them home, but the baby boy was so tiny. Was he supposed to be that small? He guessed he was, but he could not be sure. He never saw a baby this close and obviously he never had a child himself.
Carefully he took the baby in his arms, just like Faye placed him there. He trusted her instincts far more than his own. The tiny warm weight in his arms was extraordinary. It was like nothing he ever felt before. This weight lived, he could feel the babys rythmic breathing. He could feel how he moved his little feet, his hands, experimentally flailing his limbs a bit as he was getting used to having room to move outside of his mom. But they way he scrunched up his little nose - so much like Faye would do - told him how annoyed the little one really was at the thought of being out in the cold. "Hey, baby boy, it's okay. We got you. Your mom and I will keep you warm and safe and happy. I promise you that. You will be the most loved baby there is. Right, Faye?"

He was surprised when asked to supervise some of the students, but he guessed with how many people died, they were actually running out of people who could fix things and know their way around cables that held current. Alex might be one of the few to actually be explicitly trained to handle high voltage mainly. The mechanics and engineers obviously knew enough, but to really get into the depths, they usually had one working alongside them. It was harder down there. So he waited for the kid to join him in fixing this part. These days training was more on the job than up in space. Again it was due to circumstances.
His waiting mostly consisted of taking the fist panels of the wall of, preparing where they would work on soon. When he heard someone approach he twisted a bit so he could see her. "Hey there." He called out to the girl. She was young. Somehow he didn't expect the kid to be so young though obviously he knew that this would be her age. He just somehow didn't expect it. "I guess you're working with me today. I'm Alex, though I think they might have told you to go to Lightbulb. That's me. Are you ready for a thrill?"

Alex grinned. He grinned very happily. It was the day he was to become a father. They didn't allow him to be with her. There was a virus in the medical tract, one that would not harm Faye. They still had her in a different room while she gave birth. And it was also why he could not be with her. But her friend was, Clarke was with her. It was her who got him, smiling at him and congratulating him. He congratulated her in return. After all, his wife and her were like sisters. She was basically the babies aunt. She didn't tell him what it was. Finally he was given a mask to walk through the med bay towards Faye.
There she was, holding a baby, their little one. The sight of those tiny hands was the cutest sight he ever saw. "Faye... you did so well." He whispered as she went to her. He sat on the bed and reached out to gently cup her face in his hand. "I am so proud of you! You... I can't even begin to thank you for this, what you've been through, what you did." And then he looked down at the baby. "This is our child... it's gorgeous. How exactly did we make something so cute?" He wanted to reach out to touch his baby, but he didn't dare. The kid was so tiny.

"Let me be pragmatic here. In the best case scenario our child will grow fast and it will need a lot of space in the space of a few years. In that time we will both have our hands full with keeping the little rascal happy and healthy, with keeping Arkadia in shape and getting it back into shape. We will have our hands full with so much things, building a bigger crib or bed will go down on our priority list until that baby will 100% outgrow it. In the worst case scenario we have to factor in grounder attacks and my decreasing health - and I say decreasing health, not death, love. I will not die, but I might be a bit under the weather, but death will have to wait a loooong time for me. Both will cause the priority for that crib to go further down that list. So, we should make it big so we won't have to worry about that later." He held her so close, now afraid to loose two people, his entire family, his world.
"Besides, I can do with a little less space if it means out little one has enough. I can always walk out into the fresh air, that little bean in you doesn't have that luxury, so I'd like to sacrifice a bit of our space so the kid has what it needs. That's okay with you, I hope?" If not, he'd just have to persuade her. Or he would try and get a bigger place for them. They might need it and she had contacts that might do them some good.

Once he held her, Alex slowly swayed them, slightly off beat, but he was a mechanic, electrician, not a dancer, not a musician. He understood the way the electricity pulsed. He understood how things worked. But that was about it. That was what he had dedicated his life to. Now he had a bit of music, a gorgeous woman in his arms and a life ahead of them. They could do this. He could give her a now. He wanted to do that. As he moved them slightly, he grinned against her. "Right back at you, Faye. But you're also all I need." She was more than he ever hoped for.
"But really, fate did smile down on us. We survived a space station crash. The Ark wasn't even designed to be put together like it was. None of the original stations was designed to survive re-entry. But it did. It's a miracle. Us meeting is a miracle." He held her a bit closer, wanting her to be as close as possible to him. He didn't want to miss a moment of their touch. He didn't want to miss a moment where he could feel her heardbeat against him, if he didn't have to. "You are, quite literally, heaven-sent. If you see the sky as heaven. We might as well be angels."

"I'm not like everyone else." He gently ran his hand through her hair. "I'm a lot dorkier." As she said the entire time. And he didn't doubt it. He could be pretty dorky and nerdy when he was comfortable around people. He could go on about his work. And he could go on about things others didn't even spare a thought to. But he didn't want to survive, he wanted to live. His time was limited. It shifted his focus to something else: It shifted it to making the most of the time he was given. He wanted to make the most of the time with her. And so an idea hit him.
He moved to the panel in the wall and switched it on to something he never thought he would use like that. It was music, old and preserved from the old days. He skipped through two songs that were decidedly too fast for what he had in mind. Then he held his hand out to her: "Dance with me." After waiting for a moment, he added: "I can't make promises, Faye. Anything could happen. But I can promise that we will enjoy being together for as long as we can. I don't take you for granted, Faye. You and I, we are together because fate smiled down on us. And I intend to make every moment count. Today is what counts. Lets not live in tomorrow and miss today."

"The Ark was killing us up there, too." Just a lot slower, more malicious. The thing was, that with the dropship ripping itself from the Ark, so many life support systems were failing rapidly, that they wouldn't have made it long. It was a long night ahead of them, with only death ahead. At least by coming down to the ground, they had a fighting chance. "It's going to be a long night. But for some of us there is light on the horizon and the sun will rise to another day." It was a stupid thing to say, really, but it gave him hope.
"I worked as electrician. I tried to uphold the life support after it started to fail." And he suffered from it. He hadn't slept and he was so tired. But at the same time he'd rather not sleep and get a fighting chance for him and his people to survive. "Well, I guess it worked. We are alive. Someone will come." He guessed they would make an assessment of who was where. And people knew there were people in this part of the station. They could survive this. "Just try to stay still and don't touch anything that you're not already touching."

"I will." He promised. He would. But if he lost her now, he lost not only her. That would complicate things a lot. He didn't like losing people he loved. Now there were two. A baby, too. He looked at her so softly. His hand lingered on her cheek as he touched her softly. They should rest. They had to take it easy now. She had to take care of herself and he had to, too. That meant they should sleep. They should cuddle and wake refreshed in the morning.
"Or kind of." He promised. "Because after work tomorrow, I won't rest immediately." He couldn't. With those news, he had so much to work for. She was making a new life with her body. He could at least help her by making everything else. And honestly, he'd feel useless if he couldn't at least do that. It was weird how she would do almost all and he would be able to do next to nothing. "Tomorrow I will start designing a crib." He said. "I don't think many of those survived the cataclysm. But I will build this little one one that will last it for a looong time. Not some tiny contraption like those we had on the Ark. A big one. One that the kid can fit into as a toddler, too!"

Sneaking about was a pain. He didn't want to keep secrets from Faye. He had to, though. Alex had talked to Clarke a while ago. She had dropped the information in passing, probably hadn't even thought it mattered all that much, because why would it? But it mattered to him. Back on the ark surviving another year could not be made a big deal of. Birthday cakes were reserved for those on alpha station. And even then for very, very special occasions, like the big numbers, 18 and all that. With the Ark coming down some kids never had it and he suspected Faye might have never had it either. Either way, he wanted her to have it. Because it was special. He wanted every special little thing for his Faye, no matter what it was.
So Alex made sure to be sneaky. He usually approached the person around his work time. She was doing what she could, gathering exotic fruit and all that, just to bake a cake. It looked nothing like it did in the picture. It was kind of tiny, but with the limited food they had, it was all that could be scrapped together. He also had a gift for her. It was wrapped in whatever fabric he found, though it was technically fabric, too, a beautiful white gown, that basically cost him what he earned in a year back on the ark. Down on the ground it looked different. He was one of the last electricians they had. His knowledge was valuable enough to bring money. And so he waited, with a little bit of a crooked, ugly, tiny cake and a gift. Candles lit their apartment. When the door opened he grinned at his girlfriend. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY LOVE!"

Was he okay with that? Did he even have a choice? He was no asshole. He was not going to walk out of this. He had a hand in creating this child as much as she had. He was in this with her. But he also liked kids. And he loved the idea of having one of his own, a little mixture between them. And so he managed to grin at her. "Does a man who's not okay with that look like this? I have to admit it's... a huge shock! But you didn't exactly prepare me there did you? Bit like "Lets hit Alex over the head with the biggest rock I can find" so he snaps out of it." His voice was gentle, teasing.
"Also... we made a baby. We actually made a baby! That's pretty damn aweseome! AND by accident! I think we're pretty awesome for that alone." But he loved her, so he always thought she was pretty awesome. He leaned forward to just kiss her. "Also you will actually grow a human life inside you, if THAT doesn't scream awesome, what does?"

Pregnant. She was pregnant. He had no reason not to think it wasn't his kid, so they were having a kid together. A child. In this world. With the father basically about to die. Well it could take a while. And the mother went to mount weather. Through a hostile surrounding, hostile lands. There was no way this was okay. She risked so much, potential miscarriages or not. this risked the kid and her life. But he couldn't say that. He just couldn't. Alex lay back, looking at her, trying to wrap his head around the fact that there was to be a child. A child. A new generation, growing up to see the trees, not stuck in a space station, fated to inhale toxic air, that would kill them slowly. For their child sun and rain would be normal and being locked up would be a mystery to it, a story told by their parents and nothing more. It was a matter of the past. And the child would experience the future. It would experience joy and safety. He would make sure of it.
"We will have a baby?" He asked, gently. They were having a baby. Many were wanting to have kids. It was like hope. It was like they were expecting to last, expecting to survive so a new generation could step in their footsteps. The future was good. It was there, it was growing out of the love between them. This was what her friend was fighting for: A future for their people, for all of these babies to be born and to experience the sun on their faces. And they should fight with her, just with this simple peace: By clinging to the future. "We're having a baby." He whispered in awe. "We created life..."
