| Life on the ground was strange and hard to get used to, but she didn't really have a choice. This was her world now. Faye never thought she would be on the ground so she had never mentally prepared herself for such a reality. She didn't like the uncertainty on the ground. The unknown of whether or not the camp would be attacked by grounders was always lingering and while some decided to ignore that, she couldn't. It didn't matter if her best friend trusted the grounders and believed to have a good relationship with the Commander. It wasn't like Faye didn't trust Clarke, because she did, but she didn't trust the grounders. She thought Clarke's judgement was a little clouded but it wasn't something she was willing to talk to the blonde about. Instead, she focused on living her life at the camp, however boring it may be.
One good thing had come out of crashing onto Earth: Alex. It had been unexpected and out of the blue, but that didn't make it any less important. It had started with the two of them being crushed underneath part of the Ark, both thinking they were going to die if no one could figure out how to lift it off of them. So they had told one another all about their lives. Faye had told him things she had never told anyone, not even Clarke. She didn't know why. There had still been a chance they wouldn't die. But Faye knew there was just something about Alex that she couldn't quite put her finger on. There was something about him that made her want to tell him those things.
Dropping something off in the medical bay had been a blimp on her radar for the day. At least, that's what it had been. Faye turned to leave the medical bay but was stopped by someone shouting her name. Turning, she spotted one of the nurses that worked in medical but she couldn't think of her name. Faye stopped talking and offered the girl a small smile to be polite. "When you see Alex do you think you could tell him the doctor wants to run some tests later?" The woman asked. Faye kept a straight face but her mind was swimming in confusion. What the hell was she talking about? "Sure," Faye answered. "What tests does the doctor want this time?" Her tone was calm. If she was going to get any sort of information out of this woman, she couldn't let her see any hint of fear. Not suspecting a thing, the nurse smiled and even chuckled lightly. "Oh, you know, the usual. Checking in on his lungs and heart to make sure everything is okay. He hasn't had a CT Scan since the Ark but one of the mechanics and engineers finally managed to create a machine for us to run tests again." Faye felt her body stiffen, but she forced herself to smile. "Great. I'll let him know." With that, she turned and left medical.
She was going to throw up. Alex was sick and he had never said anything? And it wasn't even anything new since apparently it had been going on while he was on the Ark. Faye rushed towards their shared living quarters, feeling like the walls were crumbling down on her. This wasn't happening. She couldn't even . . . he couldn't be sick. They didn't have the proper medicine down here to help. Had his symptoms been there the whole time and she just had never noticed? Was she that blind? Glancing at the clock in their apartment, she knew Alex would be returning to their quarters soon so he could change before lunch. She tried to control her breathing but was having a hard time. Leaning against the wall, Faye felt herself slide down until she was sitting on the ground. What the hell was she supposed to do? you promised me you'd be around. |

His fingers were cold. He had used them all day, but they were cold, not filled with the warmth that they should hold. He knew why. He knew the pain today, but he also knew that currently there was no proper way to undo the damage. If anything he could stall the symptoms progressing, but he couldn't really be healthy ever again. But it was part of him now. It was really what made him fear earth a little less. He was gonna bite it anyway after all. And so he came back to the apartment, a smile on his lips, ready to greet his girlfriend and enjoy the evening. According to those who thought they knew, the evening would be a good one.
He found his girlfriend on the floor and that was unusual to say the least. She was usually busy. He had known her as someone who didn't just sit there and do nothing. At least not usually. "Why are you sitting on the floor?" He asked her, as casually as he could. He was starting to pack away his belonging, the warmth of their apartment making him warmer. She looked like something was on her mind though. Was it something with her friend? The one who was out there all alone? "Did something happen to your friend? Was she found?"

| It didn't feel real. It couldn't be real. But it was. This was her reality and it had just come crashing down. Everyone she loved died and it seemed like Alex was no exception. Faye didn't know how long she had been sitting there, but she was pulled from her thoughts when she heard the apartment door open. She saw him soon after she heard the door open, considering she was sitting in the main room. But Faye couldn't bring herself to look up at him. She only saw him from the corner of her eye. Faye couldn't seem to stop staring at the blank spot in front of her face. He asked why she was sitting on the floor but she didn't say anything. Instead she merely looked down at her nails and how much she had chewed on them since she had been sitting on the floor. "No," she finally said. "They haven't found Clarke."
She took a beat to collect her thoughts and she cleared her throat. "Were you going to tell me you were sick or was I only going to find out when you were on your death bed?" Her tone was empty but in her mind she was bitter and hurt. "Medical wanted me to tell you they wanted to run more tests on you. Something about your lungs and heart." Faye brought a knee to her chest and hugged it, resting her chin on the tip of her knee.

The hell were they doing talking about this to her? It was not their place to do so. They had an oath. And he would have consequences for them. He would not let them get away with just talking about this, while they had no right to do so. But something more important hung in there. She knew. And she felt hurt. Because he hadn't told her. And that was something he never wanted to do. Hurting her was not why he had kept it from her. But he knew no real answer. He knew not when he would have told her. He didn't know, because he didn't even know when he would have finally faced the fact that he really was going to die. They had such a good thing going.
"Faye, my love, please don't look at it like that. I can explain." he whispered as he lowered himself to the ground, kneeling in front of her so he could put a hand on her leg. "I don't know when I would have told you. I haven't even thought about it. Faye, I... since I met you, I didn't even think about my sickness. For the first time since I learned of it, it just felt insignificant, because I was happy, with you. I am happy with you. I never thought I'd have this. And... I even missed the check ups. I just... I feel good with you. I haven't paid much attention to the symptoms either." He had been careless and reckless because he felt bad. But could he be faulted for that?

| The atmosphere shifted and she could feel something along the lines of anger radiating off of Alex. She knew it wasn't directed at her, but likely those in medical that had spoken to her about his illness. Part of her didn't blame them for saying something. It was, after all, not their business to discuss it with anyone unless approved by the patient. But the other part of her didn't blame the person that had told her. They had been under the assumption that Alex had shared his illness with Faye, especially considering their relationship. If it was a no brainer for this nurse that didn't know them, then how come he had never told her? Faye supposed there wasn't much of a point in overthinking it since she now knew about his illness. There wasn't a way to go back in time and fix things. The truth was out and that was what they should both be focusing on.
'I can explain'. Usually the expression would have Faye rolling her eyes and storming away, not even wanting an explanation. But with Alex, she wanted him to explain. She wanted to know what had kept him from sharing this part of himself with her. Faye had been under the impression that they shared everything with one another but it was quite obvious that wasn't the case. She felt his hand touch her leg and she finally looked up at him as he lowered himself so he was level with her on the floor. Faye listened to his explanation, not interrupting him at all, even though she wanted to. She wanted to argue every point he made but she couldn't bring herself to even open her mouth. At least, not until he was done.
"You need to take care of yourself," she finally said. "You make me happy too. But this . . . it's not just something you can ignore. You may feel fine now but obviously it's something serious. Alex, I don't want to wake up one day to find you gone." A tear slid down her cheek as she said her last sentence. He was being careless and part of her wanted to point out that it was selfish of him, but she knew that he was probably already upset that she had found out like this. Hell, Faye was upset that she had found out like this. you promised me you'd be around. |

"You won't wake up one morning and find me gone." he promised. Ad least that he could promise. That was just not how this sickness worked. It was slowly developing, getting worse and worse until he was a gonner. But as far as he understood it could take years. Given everything, the better air, he could maybe live longer down here. If the peace would hold even the stress would lessen and he might actually be able to relax, with her. He might just live a long life - just shorter than the others. But well that was a matter of perception, wasn't it?
"It's slow." He whispered to her. "My health will deterioate slowly, not fast. It won't happen one night to the other. It can take years. It's... affecting my breathing. I pass out. I can breathe less. But in the end it's not fast. Given the way we live now it's not unlikely it can be prolonged. There is less stress, I am happy, we get different air, stimulating my lungs. And I didn't have any notable worse symptoms. So I think a little hope isn't too far off. By the time I die, you'll probably be sick of my sick butt."

| He promised that she wouldn’t wake up one morning to find him gone, but that wasn’t really a promise he could make. She knew he was just trying to make her feel better but it didn’t help. Faye knew at one point in her life his illness would be bad enough where it took his life. That was how death worked and she knew from experience. Her mother had been the same way. One minute she had been fine and the next she had been gone. One would assume that Faye would have been prepared since her mom had been sick her whole life, but her mom had always promised to be around. She always promised that she would be there for Faye. But she wasn’t and right now she just wanted to hug her mom and tell her about Alex and how much she cared for him. She wanted to have the stupid mother-daughter talks about boys. But none of that could happen since her mother was dead. “I know how an illness like this works,” she whispered back. She stared at the blank spot in front of her face. Faye had briefly mentioned her mother to Alex before. She had summarized what had happened to her and how she had been sick her whole life. She hadn’t gotten too into it, seeing as she didn’t care to discuss the topic. But he knew about her mom so he should be able to understand that this was a sensitive topic for her. A sad laugh left her lips when he joked about her being sick of him. That wasn’t going to happen, because she knew how she felt about him. She hadn’t exactly told him that she loved him, but they both knew that they cared about one another in a strong way. “I won’t get sick of you,” Faye sadly joked. “I . . .” What was she going to say? That she loved him? That she was still upset about him lying? “I don’t want a life without you in it,” she finished after a moment.

Then don't do this - he was close to saying that out loud, but couldn't. The situation did not call for that right now. Right now he had to make sure she would be okay. But that was not easy. The thing was that sickness wasn't easy to deal with. But they had to. It couldn't be undone. "We don't know what the future brings, Faye. How this progresses. I... don't even know what is coming." He was strong, he was healthy other than that sickness, of course. There was no reason why he should not last long, upper scale of the time people could have when diagnosed.
"We survived a fucking space station crash. And some weirdly violent bunker dwellers. Not to mention an army of backwards wood people with a bad fashion sense. I think we survived worse than a sickness. And who knows. Maybe our backwards wood people with their dramatic fire dancing in the night decide to burn down the camp tomorrow? Or we find a mine of hydrazine and we all go BOOM tomorrow. All possibilities. Or Go Sci looses orbit and falls onto our heads."

She knew he was right. They didn't know what would happen in the future. They could both die tomorrow for all they knew. Or they could die in a week from a grounder attack. Faye knew she should be enjoying the time she did have with him, but it was hard for her to think that way. It was hard because she had already lost so many people and she knew she wouldn't surviving losing him too. With Clarke gone, he was literally the only thing that kept her moving. He was what helped her wake up in the morning. Faye felt another tear slide down her cheek at her thoughts and she quickly wiped it away. She hated crying, especially in front of people she cared about. It wasn't like something had been drilled into her head about showing feelings, but she just didn't like people seeing her like that. She didn't like the vulnerability that came with it and she didn't like it when people gave her looks of pity.
Alex listed off many things that could go wrong, that could cause their demise. Leave it to him to make jokes at a time like this. His words had Faye trying to suppress a small life. It was just the way he spoke, but he could always make her laugh. He always knew what to say. Hell, that was the main reason she had started to like him. It had been so long since she had genuinely smiled or laughed and he had been the one to get her to do just that. A small chuckle managed to escape her lips, and she finally looked up at him. "I know," she spoke. "But it doesn't make my worries any weaker." She was going to worry about his illness all the time. "I just . . . finding out you were sick hit me like a ton of bricks. I just didn't want to lose you like I lost everyone else," Faye explained.

"I'm not like everyone else." He gently ran his hand through her hair. "I'm a lot dorkier." As she said the entire time. And he didn't doubt it. He could be pretty dorky and nerdy when he was comfortable around people. He could go on about his work. And he could go on about things others didn't even spare a thought to. But he didn't want to survive, he wanted to live. His time was limited. It shifted his focus to something else: It shifted it to making the most of the time he was given. He wanted to make the most of the time with her. And so an idea hit him.
He moved to the panel in the wall and switched it on to something he never thought he would use like that. It was music, old and preserved from the old days. He skipped through two songs that were decidedly too fast for what he had in mind. Then he held his hand out to her: "Dance with me." After waiting for a moment, he added: "I can't make promises, Faye. Anything could happen. But I can promise that we will enjoy being together for as long as we can. I don't take you for granted, Faye. You and I, we are together because fate smiled down on us. And I intend to make every moment count. Today is what counts. Lets not live in tomorrow and miss today."

She closed her eyes when she felt him run his fingers through her hair. It was relaxing and she couldn't help but to wonder how long she would be able to enjoy something like this? She knew he said he was fine, or not as bad as he had been, but that didn't stop her from worrying. Faye got lost in her own thoughts, not even noticing Alex standing up and walking over to one of the walls. It took a moment for her mind to register the sound of music. It had been a while since she had heard music, but they had some of it on the ark. Faye didn't know how Alex got a hold of it but somehow he had. Faye looked up at him from her spot on the floor, raising her eyebrows at him. Had the situation not been so serious, she would have laughed at his question to dance with him. It was cheesey but she guessed that's why she loved him.
Placing her hand in his, she allowed him to help her up off the ground. She didn't realize how sore she was until she stood up. How long had she been sitting there? But her eyes looked at him as he spoke about making the most of their time together. He said he didn't take her for granted and she never thought he had, but she realized it was nice to hear. She couldn't help a small smile from forming on her lips and rolling her eyes. He was so corny. "Dork," she huffed. "Fate smiled down upon us? More like a beam crashed on top of us and forced us to talk," Faye mused with a smile. Faye wrapped her arms around his neck and rested her head around his chest. "You're just all I really have left," she confessed.

Once he held her, Alex slowly swayed them, slightly off beat, but he was a mechanic, electrician, not a dancer, not a musician. He understood the way the electricity pulsed. He understood how things worked. But that was about it. That was what he had dedicated his life to. Now he had a bit of music, a gorgeous woman in his arms and a life ahead of them. They could do this. He could give her a now. He wanted to do that. As he moved them slightly, he grinned against her. "Right back at you, Faye. But you're also all I need." She was more than he ever hoped for.
"But really, fate did smile down on us. We survived a space station crash. The Ark wasn't even designed to be put together like it was. None of the original stations was designed to survive re-entry. But it did. It's a miracle. Us meeting is a miracle." He held her a bit closer, wanting her to be as close as possible to him. He didn't want to miss a moment of their touch. He didn't want to miss a moment where he could feel her heardbeat against him, if he didn't have to. "You are, quite literally, heaven-sent. If you see the sky as heaven. We might as well be angels."

"Oh my god," she laughed. The words he spoke were unbelievably cheesy. She loved him and she loved everything about him, but she had never been one for those romantic sayings. She had never been a fan of those large romantic gestures either. Then again, she had never been in love before. Faye had been with guys before but Alex was different. She loved him. She held onto him as they swayed to the music, still a foreign concept to her but she enjoyed it nevertheless.
"Will you go get your tests done?" Faye asked. She hadn't forgotten about the tests that the doctors were requesting Alex to get. She wanted to go with him and make sure he knew that she would be by his side. She wanted to see how he was doing now that he was on Earth. Faye wasn't expecting any miraculous recoveries but she could hope that he wasn't deteriorating as quickly as he had been on the Ark.
