Sneaking about was a pain. He didn't want to keep secrets from Faye. He had to, though. Alex had talked to Clarke a while ago. She had dropped the information in passing, probably hadn't even thought it mattered all that much, because why would it? But it mattered to him. Back on the ark surviving another year could not be made a big deal of. Birthday cakes were reserved for those on alpha station. And even then for very, very special occasions, like the big numbers, 18 and all that. With the Ark coming down some kids never had it and he suspected Faye might have never had it either. Either way, he wanted her to have it. Because it was special. He wanted every special little thing for his Faye, no matter what it was.
So Alex made sure to be sneaky. He usually approached the person around his work time. She was doing what she could, gathering exotic fruit and all that, just to bake a cake. It looked nothing like it did in the picture. It was kind of tiny, but with the limited food they had, it was all that could be scrapped together. He also had a gift for her. It was wrapped in whatever fabric he found, though it was technically fabric, too, a beautiful white gown, that basically cost him what he earned in a year back on the ark. Down on the ground it looked different. He was one of the last electricians they had. His knowledge was valuable enough to bring money. And so he waited, with a little bit of a crooked, ugly, tiny cake and a gift. Candles lit their apartment. When the door opened he grinned at his girlfriend. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY LOVE!"

Alex was acting strange. Faye couldn't figure out what was going on, but it was starting to bother her. Most girls might think their boyfriend was cheating on them, but that thought never crossed her mind. Instead, she was afraid it had something to do with his illness. Had the doctors found something wrong and he was trying to avoid telling her? He knew how much she worried about him. So Faye continued to be stressed about the whole thing. She supposed she could always ask him, but she didn't want him to lie to her. She didn't want him trying to protect her from some horrible truth.
Walking back to their shared apartment, Faye decided to take a nap. Later she would ask Alex about what was going on, since she knew he was at work right now. Faye opened the door and went to turn on the light, but was startled but someone speaking. She squealed in surprise and looked around the room. There were candles and a . . . birthday cake? Faye looked over at Alex and saw how excited he looked. So this was what he had been sneaking around about? Faye had no idea how he had known it was her birthday. Truth be told, she had forgotten about it herself. It had never been special on the ark, especially after her mom died. So Faye didn't even think about it down here. "How did you . . .?" Clarke must have said something. She was the only one who knew her birthday.
Faye felt overwhelmed at the sight. He had done all of this for her? She spotted something that resembled a cake, not that she had ever seen one like this. Once in awhile she saw them in the kitchens, but it was always for someone with privilege. Faye approached Alex and cupped his face with her hands, her eyes searching his. He was unbelievably amazing. "I love you," she breathed after a moment, leaning forward and pressing her lips against his in a passionate kiss.
