Monty watched Clarke with evident curiosity as she dropped to her knees beside him and began to twist the handle, by now he'd guessed what it was that they had found. Whether or not it would be suitable to offer them shelter until the storm passed was another matter all together, it depended upon what they found there. When Clarke asked him for a hand, Monty reacted quickly, seizing the handle with both hands and pulling, the door was stiff and heavy and it was immediately obvious that nobody had opened it in quite a while but eventually it gave and Monty was able to ease it slowly open. When the door to the bunker was open completely, Monty stared down into the hole, he could see the first couple of rungs of a ladder leading down into the bunker, but it was too dark to see anything more.
Turning to Clarke, Monty gestured towards himself and then at the hole in case she couldn't hear him over the sounds of the storm "I'll go down first, then you follow" with her shoulder, he was worried about how she was going to climb down the ladder into the bunker and if she slipped and fell then she wouldn't be able to catch herself with one arm. This way, if she fell then there was a chance that he'd be able to catch her, or more likely, cushion her fall. If she couldn't close the door then he was willing to climb the ladder again to get it closed, he didn't know how far down the ladder went and he definitely didn't want Clarke making the journey down in her condition without him having checked it out first.
Shuffling over to the edge he placed his feet on the first rung of the ladder and started his descent, making sure to test each rung with one foot first to make sure that it could hold his weight. The ladder was old, he didn't want to take any chances, especially as he didn't know how far down it went. When he reached the bottom of the ladder, he stared up at the light that was being let in from the open door "Clarke! Come on down! It's safe" the ladder was strong enough to hold his weight, so he was confident that it would also hold hers and there couldn't be anything that posed a threat to them down in the bunker, the door was definitely too stiff to have been opened recently.

Nobody had expected the grounders to retaliate as they had, the fog that they'd somehow created burnt your lungs if you breathed it in and made it almost impossible to breathe. Monty had been retreating with the rest of the group when he'd heard Monroe's desperate calls. He'd heard her calling for him, begging for his help, of course he hadn't hesitated when he pulled free from the men that had been dragging him along by the arms. Without a second thought for his own safety, he'd ran back into the fog in search of his friend, he'd tried to avoid breathing in the strange fog as much as possible but when he'd found Monroe on the floor coughing and gasping for air, it was obvious that she hadn't attempted to do the same. Monty had pulled her to her feet and together they'd stumbled back towards where he'd last seen the others, they made it out of the fog and to the safety of their own people but Monty realised his efforts to save her had been in vain as he was forced to watch her die moments after they'd put her down on the floor.
The drive back to Arkadia had been silent, Monty's thoughts were occupied by things that they could've done differently, that he could've done differently. Everything had just gone wrong, nobody was supposed to die, that's what he kept telling himself but really, what had he expected? They went to that village with the intention of driving the grounders from their land, maybe if Octavia hadn't interfered, they would have succeeded and Monroe would still be alive. Now she lay in the back of the rover with a sheet covering her lifeless body. When they arrived back at Arkadia, Monty was quick to leave the rover and he watched as Monroe's body was carried from the vehicle before looking down at the ground, he waited by the rover until the majority of the others had left and then there was just him and the boy he knew was called Bryan.
Monty was just about to leave when Bryan's voice stopped him and his whole body tensed as he let the words sink in. He barely knew the other boy, all he knew was that they came from the same station and he was dating Miller, they hadn't even spoken on the ark, Monty recalled seeing him around a few times but he couldn't remember ever having a real conversation with him. "Excuse me?" he asked, unsure if he'd heard Bryan correctly at first. "I wasn't thinking, I was trying to save her life, she was dying!" he muttered his reply with a shake of his head as he raised his head to look at the other boy, he didn't care what Bryan thought of his actions, he couldn't just stand back and watch her die, he had to do something, even if what he'd done hadn't made a difference in the end.

"Hey, you could find tons of ways of getting into trouble in here..." Monty told his friend with a smile, "I dunno, assault a guard next time they come in here!" they couldn't get floated twice, could they? What was the worst that could happen if they committed another crime. They'd already been given a death sentence. "We could try thinking of more creative games to play, to pass the time" he suggested, knowing that the time would pass slowly in their cell if they failed to find ways to entertain themselves.
Monty could feel his mouth beginning to water as Jasper spoke about the nuts that they'd once eaten "I do like nuts" he muttered, a slight whine to his tone as he realised what his friend was trying to do. An audible rumble could be heard at that moment, coming from the boys stomach and he scowled "do you see what you did?! Now I feel ten times hungrier than I was before" without putting much effort into it, he tried to aim a kick at Jasper's legs. He knew that the soft kicks wouldn't hurt his friend, but he wanted to get his point across "for the record... You are an incredible thief, if we ever get out of here, you've got to try and steal some more"

Monty gave a small laugh "hey, I think you're way prettier than Lily, don't let anyone ever tell you that you're not" he teased his friend, glad that they could joke around even as they were preparing to leave each other for four weeks. It was a long time for them to be apart when they were used to seeing each other every day. "I'd pick you over her any day of the week!" he flashed Jasper a smile in an attempt to make him laugh. He preferred for them to part with smiles on their faces instead of with tears in their eyes. In truth, he'd pick Jasper over anyone, even if the other person was 'prettier' than him, Jasper was his best friend, he could never choose anyone over him.
"You better do better than your best" Monty warned the other boy, nudging him playfully "because I swear, if anything happens to you..." he trailed off, unable to find the appropriate words to finish the sentence. "Just.. Don't die" he sighed, repeating what he'd said before. There was an element of risk to everything that they did, Monty was confident that if Jasper held himself together on the journey that he'd be alright. He would have the other people in his group to help him through it if he was troubling, if he trusted them enough to open up to them. That was the problem, trusting others with his problems could be difficult.
"We can get through this" Monty stared at his friend when he heard him repeat his own words, the words that he'd spoken to Jasper during the moments after they realised that Alie had been defeated. "We can" he confirmed, he believed that they could get through anything together, they'd find happiness again. Once all the madness was over and the world stopped trying to die. Monty was surprised when he noticed Jasper raise both his hands slightly and he realised what he was doing, they hadn't high fived like that since Mount Weather. They hadn't high fived at all since Mount Weather. Quickly, Monty raised his own hands to mirror Jasper's and clapped them together in their version of a high five.

Monty had wandered outside when he’d heard the approach of a rover and watched as, one by one, his friends walked back through Arkadia’s gates. There were others too, the arkers who’d been chipped were returning home. Maybe it was foolish to hope for things to get better, but Alie had been defeated, lives had been lost but now Monty hoped that things could start returning to ‘normal’ and people would have time to heal. He’d had a chance to clean and bandage his own injury, the screwdriver hadn’t seemed to cause him any lasting damage and the pain wasn’t as bad as it had been, it was bearable. Everyone could now take the time to heal, if the world let them, from what he’d seen so far, Monty wasn’t confident that they’d have much of a break before something new happened that threw them into a new sense of panic.
Then he noticed a couple of people carry a stretcher from the rover, he didn’t think much of it at first. There was bound to be some injured among their people, he wasn’t a doctor and so he didn’t think he could help, he’d leave that to those who actually knew medicine. However, his attention was drawn back to the stretcher when movement caught his eye and a weak voice reached his ears, calling his name. He turned back to the stretcher and finally saw who lay upon it “Clarke?” he questioned, immediately walking over to the stretcher that held his friend “What happened to you?” a flash of concern crossed his face as he tried to figure out what was wrong with the girl. This was definitely the weakest that he’d ever seen her, even when she’d become sick with the illness that the grounders had once sent to their camp, she’d seemed to have more strength than she did at that moment. He was aware that she’d entered the city of light somehow, Raven had seen her. He wondered if that was what had made her so weak, he hesitated briefly before slipping his hand into hers, it was an action that was meant to reassure both himself and her. He needed to know that she wasn’t going to pass out on him, he wouldn’t cross it out yet, she couldn’t even sit up on her own.Clarke Griffin

When Clarke was on her feet, Monty felt a little better as it confirmed that she could at least stand near enough on her own, even if she was still holding onto him. He knew that it was dangerous for them to remain outside with nothing to shield them from the storm that continued to pelt them with sand. He repositioned his hold on his companion, hooking his arm around her back to give her some extra support, he was aware that she’d had trouble getting to her feet on her own and took from that, that she was injured. What he didn’t know was how bad her injuries were.
The roaring of the wind in his ears from the storm affected his hearing and he could barely hear what she was trying to say to him, he only caught snatches of what she was trying to communicate to him. Through the roaring of the storm, he definitely heard the words ‘dune’ and ‘shelter’ and he tried to look around, keeping his hand up to his face in an attempt to keep the majority of the sand from getting into his eyes, the method that he’d adopted wasn’t proving to be effective. Catching sight of the sand dune that he assumed Clarke was speaking about, he gave a small nod of his head even if he couldn’t be sure that she’d see it. “That could work!” he tried to shout to her, but his voice was lost in the wind and before they could lose anymore time, he took a step towards the dune, then another and another. Forcing himself to put one foot in front of the other in an attempt to reach safety, all the while he was dragging Clarke with him, unwilling to let go of her in case she fell again or they managed to get separated by the sand storm.
Monty wasn’t used to such extreme conditions and the strength of the storm made him stumble every couple of steps. The sand moved beneath his feet, making it hard to walk without the risk of falling over, but eventually he reached the dune that could be their salvation. Stumbling forwards, his foot suddenly landed upon something firm, the sensation of standing on something solid came as a surprise to Monty and he almost lost his footing before he regained his balance and stared at the ground beneath his feet. Lifting a foot, he kicked at the ground and heard a faint thudding sound. Immediately, he let go of Clarke and dropped to his knees, his suspicions confirmed as he didn’t immediately sink into the sand and his knees hit against a solid surface. “There’s something down here!” he called to Clarke as he started to brush away the sand that was hiding whatever lay beneath their feet, his hands scraping away the sand. Suddenly his hands brushed against the cool hard surface of whatever lay hidden underneath the sand and he sat back to look at the partially concealed metal surface. Clarke Griffin

It was obvious to Monty that Harper would not just accept his attempts at reassuring her, even if he wanted her to accept the reassurance and just let him leave. Saying goodbye to her was hard enough, he didn’t need her to make it any harder. “Hey, it’s going to be dangerous, but Earth is dangerous, every day we wake up down here and have no idea what’s going to happen” he told her, his gaze softening slightly as he tried a different tactic “is this really going to be any different? The only difference is that we’re not going to be together” he didn’t know if his words made sense, even to himself, his argument sounded weak. “If the worst happens, then it happens, but I promise that I’ll try my best not to get killed” the corners of his mouth twitched upwards in a small smile. He could tell that she was finding it harder than he was, he had to be optimistic, the alternative was to accept that he was going to die whilst on the journey and if he left with that attitude, then he definitely wouldn’t survive.
When Harper closed her eyes, Monty watched her in concern, scared that she was going to start sobbing again. He didn’t want her to cry, he knew that he’d told her that they weren’t going to die, but if he was being realistic, then he’d have to agree with Harper. Nobody knew if they were both going to survive the journey and if this was to be the last time that he was going to see her, he didn’t want his last memory of her to be of her crying. As she repeated how long the journey would take, Monty’s smile broadened “if it’s easier, you could think of it being more like twenty-eight days” sometimes thinking of it like that, made it seem like a shorter time than it actually was “don’t focus too much on how long it will take, just try to tackle each day individually” his advice was half-hearted, unsure if Harper would actually take it or just focus on the negatives. She was a survivor, he knew that and was confident that she wouldn’t let the idea of four weeks without him, weigh her down. Once they got going, he was sure that it would become easier, for both of them. He felt her hand squeeze his and before he could attempt to say anything else to reassure her, she leaned up and kissed him. Her lips had barely touched his before she pulled back again and he looked at her in confusion, the kiss itself wasn’t unexpected, it was how quickly she pulled away that surprised him.
The next moment, he found out why the moment had been so brief “Please don’t do anything stupid” she said to him and his smile faltered. He had been joking, of course he wasn’t going to do anything needlessly stupid. He’d just do what was required of him but if Harper needed him to actually say the words then he figured that he could say them if they gave her peace of mind. “I promise I won’t do anything stupid” he confirmed as her hand touched his face. When she told him that she wouldn’t know what she’d do if something happened to him, he scowled slightly “you’d move on” he told her firmly “It won’t come to that, but if anything happens to me, I want you to move on, look at Jasper… He hasn’t been the same since Maya…” he trailed off, leaving the rest go unspoken. He didn’t want Harper to end up like Jasper, he loved his friend but it hurt him to see him in so much pain every day, he wanted Harper to actually be happy, even if he wasn’t in her future. He was aware that his words sounded kind of harsh, grief wasn’t something that you could just shrug off and ignore, but he wanted what was best for her and he truly believed that the quicker she moved on from him, the happier she would be.
“I-I love you Monty” her words caught his attention and he jerked away from her quickly, his mind immediately coming up blank. He just stared at her, his eyes searching hers for a while, a few long moments of silence stretched out between them and he contemplated just walking away to join his group there and then, but something told him that, that would be the wrong thing to do. Say something you idiot! He internally screamed at himself, but as he opened his mouth to speak, he found that no words came out, he knew that she was waiting for an answer and he knew that she’d probably be hurt if he didn’t repeat the words. They were just three simple words, there was nothing terrifying about them but no matter how much he willed himself to say them, he just couldn’t. Eventually he did speak “...Thanks?” he muttered, it came out more as a question than an answer and he found himself cringing at how the word sounded as it left his mouth. Leaning forwards quickly, he pressed a quick kiss to her cheek before gesturing behind him “Well, Um… We should get going, I mean… We don’t want to keep the others waiting”

"We'll keep each other safe" Monty tried to reassure her when she told him that she lacked faith in everyone else "we need each other..." if somebody in the group died then the remaining members would suffer and that would make them less likely to find a safe place for everyone to go when the radiation levels started to escalate. He couldn't remember ever seeing Harper cry like she was now, even after having her bone marrow extracted in Mount Weather, she'd been too weak to really break down. He'd made her laugh briefly, but it wasn't enough to keep her from crying now.
When she held his hand to her face, he forced a small smile despite the circumstances "I don't know what's going to happen when we're out there but I know that we're going to see each other again" it wasn't like he could be completely certain. Who knew what the future held, but it was something that he believed. He looked down at their hands as she lowered them from her face and linked her fingers with his. "It's only four weeks, it'll go by fast" he knew that it would be a worrying time for everyone but four weeks wasn't long, not if you really took the time to think about it.
When Harper promised to make sure that Jasper didn't do anything stupid, Monty nodded his head in acknowledgement. He knew that was probably the best that he could hope for, he wasn't going to ask Harper to go out of her way to look after Jasper, it wasn't her job to babysit him. "We'll see, that might not be something that I can promise" he joked, knowing that he was prone to getting himself into stupid situations. "I'll definitely try not to do anything stupid but we'll see what happens" he gave her hand a slight squeeze, it was meant to be a reassuring gesture but he wasn't sure if it helped to reassure her.

"Yet" Monty muttered, a small smile appearing on his face when he heard his friends laugh "there's still time" he'd already thought he'd lost Jasper once, he never wanted to feel that again. When Jasper pulled away from the hug, Monty saw the pained expression on his friends face and he wished that he could say something that might comfort him, but he didn't know what else there was to say. They had to go, this was bigger than both of them, it was about saving as many lives as they could before it was too late. The other people in Jasper's group could keep an eye on them, but truthfully Monty didn't trust them to give his friend the support that he needed. Babysitting an unstable teenager wasn't at the top of their list of priorities at the moment, even if Jasper was at the top of his list.
Monty laughed at Jasper's words, it was true that in all the years that they'd known each other, Monty had always known Jasper to run towards trouble instead of away from it. "Well maybe you can just stay in the back, you can be the one that sits there and looks pretty" he joked, trying to make light of their situation and cheer up the other boy. It would be a miracle if Jasper managed to stay out of trouble for four weeks, especially when they had no idea what was going to happen on their journey. "I promise that I will try my hardest to avoid dying, but if you break your side of the deal and die on me then I'll have to kill you, you think dying once is rough, try doing it a second time" humour was the only way that he knew how to tackle the situation, Jasper was usually the funny one, he was the one that made jokes. It seemed like the habit was rubbing off on Monty.

"Well we can find you a new thing" Monty told his friend stubbornly "you're good at lots of things, we can find you something new" he was only half joking. He didn't think that he'd convinced Jasper but he knew that science was getting in the way of his friend believing in an afterlife and he wouldn't tolerate that. Believing that something came after death was often a comfort to many people, they weren't as afraid of dying when they believed that they'd still be alive in another life after they died.
After hearing what Jasper had been thinking, Monty looked around the room briefly, propping himself up on one elbow before collapsing back down to lay on the bed with Jasper. They had no way of measuring time, that meant that for all they knew it could be morning and they might not have slept a wink during the night. "Don't talk about food, I'm starving" the boy grumbled, he didn't know when they'd have their breakfast, but he knew that Jasper was probably right about the food being terrible. "I hope it's decent" decent would be a miracle, criminals didn't deserve good food, it was probably thought that it'd be wasted on them when they'd be dead pretty soon anyway. Whatever it was, Monty felt sure that he'd have no trouble eating it especially as he felt like he hadn't eaten in weeks.

After Mount Weather, Monty hadn’t known what to do. He was trying to wrap his head around everything that had happened. Being locked in a cage and drilled into for his bone marrow wasn’t even the worst part, the worst part had been walking into that room and seeing the bodies of those that he’d helped kill. Innocent people, among them were children, children that had done nothing to deserve what had happened to them. When he’d found Jasper, he’d been cradling Maya’s body and the way he’d looked at him, Jasper had never looked at him like that before, it was a look that contained so much pain, anger and betrayal. This time Monty couldn’t fix what he’d done, the word ‘sorry’ wasn’t enough, it was only a word, it couldn’t reverse what had been done. Jasper hadn’t spoken to him since and Monty believed that he’d finally lost his friend, possibly forever.
He knew that Clarke and Bellamy hadn’t made the decision to pull the lever lightly. It had been the only option, to save their people. Their people were the priority, that’s how it was, it’s how it had always been. Monty was the one who’d made it possible, he was sorry that so many people had to die, it weighed heavy on him but at the same time he didn’t regret saving his friends. They could have lost so many more of their own people if they hadn’t made the decision that they had. Monty didn’t even notice when Clarke entered the hangar, too preoccupied with his own thoughts to notice much of anything. “Are you okay?” he flinched when he heard her voice, it dragged him from his thoughts and he turned to see her sitting cross legged on the floor behind him. He hadn’t seen her in what felt like forever, since Mount Weather she’d been keeping to herself and her question caught him off guard. “I’m fine…” he responded hesitantly, it was good to see her again but she looked so different from the last time he’d seen her. “Are you okay?” repeating her question, he took a couple of steps closer to her before lowering himself to sit opposite her, crossing his own legs to mirror her.

Monty had known that their journey would be dangerous, but he’d expected the danger to come in the form of nomadic grounders and mutated animals, he hadn’t expected the desert itself to attack them. His horse had panicked at the approaching storm and he’d had trouble holding onto its reigns, he’d soon lost visual on the other members of his group and after realising that he risked being yanked off of feet by the panicking animal, he released his hold on the reigns and watched as the horse disappeared into the storm. The sand was painful against his skin as it whipped up to scratch at his face and the other parts of his clothing that weren’t covered by clothing.
He was forced to close his eyes as he risked the sand blinding him, he raised a hand to shield his eyes as he forced them open a fraction to look around. His heart rate accelerated as he realised that he couldn’t see anything, the horses were gone and so were their riders as far as he could see. Suddenly he heard a sound, it sounded like a voice calling to him, the sound was muffled by the storm but as he looked in the direction that he thought it had come from, he noticed a dark shadow lying on the ground. Slowly he started to walk in the direction of the figure, stumbling a few times as he wasn’t used to walking on sand, especially in the current conditions.
Hearing whoever it was scream, he quickened his pace, almost losing his foot in his haste to reach whichever of his companions that had landed themselves in trouble. Eventually reaching the figure, he looked down as their fingers brushed his shoe and he recognised the girl immediately, despite the dusty conditions of the storm disturbing his vision. “Clarke?!” he called to her, raising his voice to be heard over the roaring of the storm. Dropping into a crouch beside the girl, his hands hovered over her cautiously “What’s wrong?! You’re hurt?” he questioned her as he made to grab her good arm to pull her to her feet.Clarke Griffin

Monty didn’t think that he should be embarrassed about struggling to get on the horse, after all the animal was quite a bit larger than he was and he’d never been taught how to mount a horse correctly. Before coming to earth he’d never even seen a horse, he didn’t even think he’d ever get to see one, only pictures in books and those weren’t exactly accurate. He didn’t speak trigedasleng but he didn’t trust that anything the grounders were saying was anything nice, he hadn’t had the best experience with grounders and although he heard that not all of them were as bad as the ones that had attacked them when they first landed on earth, he still didn’t trust them and wasn’t pleased that the grounders outnumbered the arkers in their group. The two larger grounders in the group didn’t seem to like him much but he could honestly say that the feeling was mutual, he wasn’t going along with them because he wanted them to like him, this was a matter of survival and they didn’t have to enjoy each others company, they just needed to work together.
He watched the way Clarke and Klara moved their horses forward and tried to mirror their movements, he was worried that he wouldn’t be able to control the animal at first but he was pleasantly surprised to find that his horse seemed to be content to follow the others. The boy was slightly disappointed that no code words were needed, he felt like the experience would be ten times cooler if there were code words involved. He decided that it was probably best to ignore the grounders, he had no idea what they were saying or even if they had been talking about him but he didn’t want to start trouble anyway, he’d prefer to get through the four weeks in one piece and he preferred to avoid confrontation anyway, if he could but that wasn't always possible. He knew that the mission was time sensitive, they had to find a safe place for their people so that they could save as many people as they could and so Monty was determined not to slow the group down, he might not be as experienced in riding as the others were but he had other strengths that he was sure could benefit the group. That’s why he’d volunteered to go, because he believed that he could be of some help. “So, how long are we riding for today?” he asked knowing that they had a long day ahead of them due to their deadline but the idea of being stuck on the back of a horse all day was far from appealing. The horses were pretty cool, he could appreciate their usefulness and he was sure that if he had more time to warm to them then he’d probably enjoy being around them a lot more. However, he couldn’t help but feel uncomfortable on the animal’s back and he felt like he could fall at any sudden movement, gripping tightly to the horse’s reigns he looked around at his companions who all seemed to be a lot more at home on the back of horses than he was, it was certainly something that he was going to have to get used to.

Monty felt guilty when he heard her apologise, he felt guilty that he'd made her feel like she needed to apologise for what she said after everything she'd been through. There had been times in his life when he was sick and he just felt like being an asshole to the people around him because he wasn't feeling well. In a way, Harper was sick and she had the right to be completely unwelcoming if she wanted to be "No, I'm sorry... I'm not the best at making people feel better when they're sick" he wasn't the best at offering support to people when they needed it but he was trying, he wanted to have his friend back and he knew that this wasn't really her, she was just in a lot of pain. At her words he turned to face the only door in the room, it was the only thing that kept them from escaping their prison and finding their way back to their own people. "We're not gonna die" he muttered, turning back to face her again as he offered what he hoped was a reassuring smile. "We're gonna get out of here, I won't let them take you" he brought a hand up to touch her forearm gently, not wanting to cause her pain when he knew that she was probably aching all over from being drilled.
"It really wasn't" Monty chuckled at her words "I knew you didn't find my jokes funny" Harper usually laughed at his jokes but for a while he'd had his suspicions about whether or not her humour was genuine or if it was just an act to make him feel better and make him think that he was actually funny. Jasper had always been the funny one, Monty had just tagged along and tried to learn from his friend. Smiling he played along with her joke "oh yeah, totally... Why don't we go turn ourselves in now and grab a slice of cake for the road?" that cake was delicious, Monty would admit that but he wouldn't go as far as saying that he'd turn himself in for a slice. He valued his life a lot more than he valued a slice of cake. "Maybe when we get out of here we can make our own cake?" he suggested, he didn't know how to make cake and didn't think they'd have any ingredients to make a cake but it was good to talk about having a future, as if they'd get out of Mount Weather alive and find their families.
Monty hated knowing that Harper was in so much pain, the fact that she described it as being everywhere didn't do anything to reassure him either. He wanted to take her pain away but he couldn't because he wasn't a doctor and they had no medicine in their room anyway. "When we get out of here, the doctors will fix you up, they'll have something to make you more comfortable" he couldn't think of anything else to say to her regarding her pain. Nothing he could say would take her pain away, she needed proper medicine, all he had to give her was water and that would only keep her hydrated and it wouldn't take her pain away. There was reason to be concerned at their situation, the mountain men had the upper hand and they had no food, very little water and no medical supplies to help the people like Harper that were injured but Monty did believe that Jasper could get them out. He had his doubts, but it took a lot for him to give up on his friend "Well who else is there?! We have to do this ourselves" Monty didn't believe that anyone was coming for them, he didn't think that anyone would be able to get inside the mountain without help and he definitely didn't know anyone who would willingly put their community in danger by letting outsiders in.

Monty stood waiting to leave, he was as ready as he'd ever be for the next four weeks which he was sure would be far from pleasant. He didn't really feel like riding long distances on the back of a horse surrounded by three grounders that he knew nothing about. To make matters worse, he didn't even know how to ride a horse. They had horses in Arkadia, but Monty had never actually ridden one before but he figured that as long as he actually managed to stay on the animal then he should be fine... He watched as Klara climbed atop her own horse and he tried to mimic her actions. Although he couldn't quite grasp the technique at first, several attempts passed with him just uselessly jumping and trying to pull himself onto the animals back but his attempts failed. Ridiculous was a word that came to mind when he thought about how he must look, trying to climb onto a horse in front of four other people who obviously had past experience in riding. Eventually, out of breath and more than a little embarrassed, he managed to pull himself up onto the horse's back and breathed a sigh of relief at his small accomplishment.
"I'm good to go" he muttered in response to Clarke's words "how do you work this thing? Is there like a code word or something that I need to work this thing?" he looked around the group, not really expecting an answer, not really sure if he needed an answer. It couldn't be that hard, it was just a horse. The four weeks that he'd spend riding the horse would only be made worse if he couldn't control the thing. Monty looked down and he realised how weird it felt to be so far off the ground, he finally knew what it felt like to be tall and if he was honest, it wasn't as great as it sounded.
