Monty finally finished saying his goodbyes to Jasper, reluctantly allowing him to go get ready with the rest of his group but no sooner had he let his friend go than he was wrapped in the embrace of another. Somehow, he immediately knew that it was Harper and he wrapped his arms around her, holding her close. She was the other person that he'd miss most, he'd miss his other friends of course but not all of them were going on a potentially deadly mission and Harper was different, she was his girlfriend. He felt her hug him tighter and he didn't complain, he knew that it would be a while before they'd be able to hold each other again, he didn't blame her for finding it difficult to let go. He was worried about Harper, just as much as he was worried about Jasper and he hoped that they'd put aside what had happened between them so that they could look out for each other and make sure that both of them returned alive.
When Harper finally pulled away from the hug to look at him, he could see the tears that brimmed in her eyes and he wanted nothing more than to tell her not to cry because everything was going to be okay and they'd both be okay, but he didn't know that, fake reassurances were important when it came to Jasper, but Harper didn't need that, she wasn't stupid and she understood the risks. "Don't you dare get yourself killed" he heard her voice break with emotion as she spoke and noticed her attempt to smile. Monty offered a small smile in return "why does everyone think that I'm going to get myself killed?" he asked, with a tone of mock annoyance "you all have so little faith in me" he was trying to make her laugh, or at least bring a genuine smile to her face but he had a suspicion that she didn't find his jokes funny on a good day anyway.
"Hey..." he noticed the tears begin to fall from Harper's eyes and he reached up to brush them quickly away "I'll be fine, we'll be fine" he wasn't used to people crying over him, it wasn't something that happened that often. It made him uncomfortable because all he wanted was for the person who was crying to be happy again and to stop, happiness was a rarity these days though. He needed to ask a favour from Harper, he didn't want to burden her with anything else, that was the last thing he wanted to do but he had to ask. "Harper, can you look after Jasper for me?" it was a big ask, especially after what Jasper had done to her, but he'd been chipped at the time and had no control over what he did "I'm worried about him and I don't want him to do anything stupid" he couldn't lose Jasper, he couldn't lose either of them but Jasper was the one most likely to fall off the rails, it would reassure him to know that Harper would look out for Jasper.

The moment Monty noticed Jasper heading towards him, he opened his arms out to receive the hug that he knew his best friend would give him. Jasper gave the best hugs and Monty would miss them while they were separated, he'd miss Jasper completely. He felt guilty for having to leave him even if it was to save their people, Jasper wasn't in a good place right now and to Monty it felt like he was abandoning him when he needed him the most. "You better not die on me" he heard his friend say and he stifled a laugh even though there was nothing to laugh about. "Hey, I'm not gonna die" he muttered in an attempt to reassure his friend "you can't get rid of me that easily" he was aware of the possible dangers of the mission, but he wouldn't die, he refused to when Jasper needed him, he didn't want to think about what it would do to Jasper if he lost him. Jasper was his brother, as good as anyway, this would not be the last time they saw each other.
The grounders did outnumber the arkers in his group and Monty was worried about that, he hadn't had many experiences interacting properly with grounders but they needed each other to complete the mission and while they needed each other, he assumed that he was relatively safe. "I don't think the grounders are our biggest worry at the moment, Jas" he told him, tightening his hold on his friend temporarily. "This isn't goodbye forever, it's just four weeks" he spoke the words to remind himself just as much as he was saying them to reassure his friend "you be careful out there, stay out of trouble... And try not to die" just as much as Jasper couldn't lose him, he couldn't lose Jasper, he didn't know what he'd do without his brother and Jasper was the one more likely to do something stupid and reckless anyway.

To say Monty was concerned when he heard the names of who would be in his group was an understatement. The only name he actually recognised was Clarke and he wasn't sure if he could trust her completely anymore. He'd have to learn if they were going to work effectively together but he was reluctant. She'd abandoned them after Mount Weather, sure she'd come back but it was a little too late. He was willing to work with her, he wouldn't be doing it for her, he'd do it so that his friends would be safe from the radiation that was going to kill them. The group needed him to work the radiation detector, he doubted the grounders would know how to work it and although he figured Clarke might be able to work it out eventually, it was easier if he just tagged along, he was the only one who knew how to fix it if it broke anyway. Even if their relationship had been damaged by past events, Monty knew that he'd stick close to Clarke, the other three members of their group were grounders and he felt much more comfortable knowing that Clarke was there too, she'd spent time with grounders, maybe she understood them better because of it. He trusted Clarke a lot more than he did the grounders, he at least knew her or at least, he thought he knew her. She wasn't likely to throw a spear at him if he annoyed her so that was at least something.
He didn't really know anyone else in the group, the least threatening of the grounders looked to be Klara and she was the groups healer, so he guessed that she wasn't a warrior, but that didn't mean he could trust her. She might not look like a threat but that didn't mean that she wasn't one. The only thing that mattered was her ability to do her job if one of the group became sick or injured, they needed a capable healer with them, Monty knew that Clarke had some medical knowledge, he'd seen her, she'd saved Jasper's life once, so even if this grounder didn't turn out to be a great healer then at least they had a back up. The other grounders in the group, Jaga and Tomac were a little more intimidating, they were both tall, taller than Monty was and Tomac looked as though he could snap him like a twig if he wanted to. He didn't know which clans either of them were from, but he didn't know much about the different clans if he was honest, he knew that they needed him to work the detector and that would do to ensure his safety for now.
Monty was concerned because he hadn't been placed in the same group as Jasper, to spend for weeks apart from him would be a big jump, especially with Jasper in his current state. He was still fragile and Monty was reluctant to leave him because of this. Monty was able to support him whenever he was having a particularly bad day, he knew Jasper better than anyone else and without his support he was worried that Jasper wouldn't be able to cope. Still, Jasper still had Harper in his group, that was something although after what Jasper had done to her whilst he was chipped, he didn't know how their relationship was or if they had the same amount of trust for each other that they used to.
Harper was another person that he was worried about, this mission could turn out to be dangerous and he didn't want her to be in any danger, he hoped that Jasper and Harper still trusted each other enough to look out for one another, even if they didn't want to admit it they needed each other and Monty needed for them to both be okay because if anything happened to either of them then he didn't know what he'd do. He cared about Harper, he might go as far as to say that he loved her but he was uncomfortable using that term, when you loved people you were more prone to losing them and he didn't want to lose Harper, that much he knew with certainty.
The only reason he'd agreed to go on the mission was because he thought that his skills as an engineer could be used and he'd rather go out and be useful instead of sitting around back at Arkadia feeling useless and not knowing what was going on. He'd had time to mourn the loss of his mother, not a lot of time but it was more than some people got, his relationship with Jasper had slowly started to repair itself, things weren't perfect but Monty didn't think they'd ever be perfect. For now it was all that they had and they had to make sure that they lived long enough to build on it.

Monty didn't appreciate Harper's sarcasm but he could understand that after everything she'd been through, she wouldn't be in the best mood. "I'm just trying to be nice" he muttered gently, it wasn't like he was purposefully trying irritate her. He was surprised that she was still awake, even he felt like taking a nap and they'd barely touched him compared to Harper, she must be tired and yet she was awake. It wasn't easy to sleep in their current situation, but when you got tired enough you could sleep pretty much anywhere, at least that's what he'd found. "You should rest..." he voiced his thoughts, hoping that she wouldn't ignore his concern, she'd be of more use to them when they attempted to escape if she was rested anyway.
Harper didn't laugh at his joke and honestly he didn't know what he'd been expecting, had he expected her to laugh? Maybe, but he didn't blame her for not laughing, Monty only cracked jokes because there wasn't much else he could do. Trying to lighten the mood and cheer people up was a start, it wasn't much but at least he was trying "It wasn't that funny anyway, I guess" keeping Harper company was usually pretty fun, she was a good friend but when she was in a bad mood sometimes it was best to avoid her, sometimes she could be a little scary if he was honest but he also wasn't going to leave her alone, he'd put up with her sarcasm and if she started with the harsh comments then he'd put up with that too. He had tough skin, he could handle it.
Monty had faith in Jasper, he trusted his friend to get them out of the mess that they were in, Harper didn't seem to trust him as much and wasn't quiet about voicing this. "Jasper's my friend, he's yours too, at least he's trying to find a way out of this" that was more than could be said about most of the other kids, they were just content to sit back and wait for somebody else to come up with the escape plan, nobody else wanted to take charge of the situation. When Harper started coughing, Monty's hand hovered over her in concern, he could see the look of pain on her face showing him that movement still caused her pain. He lifted the cup to her lips again at her request "where does it hurt?" he asked her, wishing that he had something he could give her to relieve her pain but of course he had nothing.

"There has to be something after..." Monty told his friend without hesitation "this can't just be it" he refused to believe that all he got was eighteen screwed up years living on the ark when he could've had literally any other life. "Fuck science, to hell with science!" he didn't need science to back up his beliefs, he just needed to believe in it himself and he definitely didn't need Jasper to worry himself about not getting an afterlife just because there was no scientific evidence that suggested that there was a life after death.
Jasper went silent and didn't speak again for a long while, Jasper was never quiet... The kid could talk for hours if somebody let him and his silence concerned Monty. "You okay?" he squeezed Jasper's arm slightly in an attempt to recapture his attention. "What are you thinking about?" death? The thousands of time they'd have to play their pointless games to pass the time for the next year? They'd probably die of boredom by the time they actually got floated, Monty actually couldn't help but think that, that might be better than what was actually going to happen to them when they turned eighteen.

Monty nodded in agreement to Bellamy's words, none of them were fine and he didn't expect them to be, not after everything that had happened. Things had to get worse before they got better, that's what people said and Monty couldn't wait for things to get better. Maybe better just wouldn't happen for them, whenever things seemed to get better for them something else just came along and ruined it. "Do you wanna talk about what happened?" he heard his friend ask him, Bellamy had been there for him after Mount Weather and had always been willing to listen when he needed to talk to so he wasn't surprised that once again he was willing to talk to him about what had happened. He didn't want to burden Bellamy with his problems when he obviously had plenty of his own but at the same time he knew that he wouldn't be able to keep it to himself forever.
He'd killed his own mother, she was under ALIE's control but it was still her. Pulling that trigger was one of the hardest things he'd ever had to do and he wished that he could just turn back the time and make it so that it never happened. He stood in silence for a while after Bellamy had asked his question before finally speaking "I killed her..." three simple words but to actually speak them aloud was like he was actually admitting it to himself. "She was at the dropship with me and Octavia and she'd taken the chip and I-" he trailed off, he didn't know if Bellamy would understand or if he'd be repulsed by his actions. "I had to..." she'd been about to kill Octavia, he'd seen that and he couldn't just stand back and watch it happen, he didn't want to kill her, he'd aimed for her shoulder first but she wouldn't stop, she just wouldn't stop.
Grief was a weird thing, he remembered clearly feeling sadness when he'd learnt of his fathers death, but this was completely different. He felt sadness over his mothers death but more than that he felt angry, so angry at what he'd done and that anger was directed at himself more than anyone else. He'd pulled the trigger, he'd made that decision, him, no one else. It hadn't just been his life or Octavia's at risk, if his mother had succeeded in making him take the chip then all of his friends would have been in danger, sacrifices had to be made, they all knew that. Monty forced a chuckle "Sucks, right?" he asked with a small shrug of his shoulders, it was an attempt to lighten the mood, one that he was already sure would fail but if he didn't attempt to joke then he was scared that he'd start crying and so far he'd been reasonably good at holding himself together, he'd hate for that to change.

Monty could understand Bellamy's frustration, they hadn't seen Clarke in months and then to finally see her and have the opportunity to bring her home only to have to watch her being dragged off by a grounder. Still, he didn't understand what he hoped to accomplish, the guy could barely walk and he thought he could track down Clarke and her grounder captive and then rescue her from the grounder whilst he was suffering from the pain in his leg. "We can't do anything until morning anyway! It's dark out and grounders aren't the only thing we have to worry about out there!" he didn't think that the Chancellor would be too keen to send guards out of Arkadia in the middle of the night, even if it was to search for her daughter. "Don't you think that if it was possible, Abby would have every able bodied person in Arkadia out there looking for Clarke?" he demanded, Clarke was her daughter, if anyone wanted to find her then surely it was the Chancellor but there were other things to think about, complications, it was too dangerous to just go charging out there ready to rescue Clarke when a grounder clan was involved.
"You can barely walk Bellamy, how do you expect to help Clarke when you can't even stand on your own!?" Monty tried to keep his voice down so as to not be heard by anyone who might be passing by, but there was a clear note of urgency in his hushed whispers. "In the morning I'll make sure that they send out a search party for Clarke but until then there's really nothing we can do, I'm sorry" the apology was sincere, he genuinely was sorry that they'd failed to bring Clarke home, he was sorry that she was in danger again and that Bellamy had gotten hurt and he was now preventing him from going after her, but he couldn't allow him to risk his life. If they couldn't save Clarke, if they were too late then he couldn't lose two friends instead of one. He gave Bellamy a gentle push as if trying to subtly coax him back into bed, he could see how desperate Bellamy was in this moment to find Clarke, but he simply couldn't allow him to go out there in his current state. Even if he wasn't injured and was perfectly capable of surviving out there, Monty would have doubts, grounders weren't reasonable people, they'd already seen that and Monty wasn't about to lose another friend. "We'll find her, I promise" giving Bellamy's arm a comforting squeeze, his eyes flickered down to the bed, silently willing him to just listen for once "we won't lose her" .

Monty hated seeing Jasper like this, especially when there was nothing he could do to help him, not really unless he had a magic wand, then he could just magic them out of the Ark and somewhere else. He felt his friend's grip tighten around his arm but he didn't even care, it didn't hurt and if it helped Jasper to cope just a little better then he had no complaints.
Jasper's question surprised him although he figured that it shouldn't have really, but he didn't really know how to answer him. His first instinct was to protect his friend, to tell him that it would be over in the blink of an eye and he wouldn't feel anything but the other part of him was also curious, he had no idea what it would be like, he'd never been floated before and obviously nobody had ever survived being floated to explain how it felt. After a moments hesitation, Monty finally answered the other boy "Nobody really knows what it's like, but I believe that it's over before you even realise that it's happened and once it's done, it's over, there's no pain" he didn't know if this would reassure Jasper, he didn't even know if he was saying it just to reassure him or if he truly believed the words that he spoke.
"I don't know what comes after death, but there must be something more, I don't think our minds stay awake in our bodies so that they can see and feel everything that is happening" surely if that was the case then they'd have been signs. The idea of the mind staying awake for hours after the body had died seemed ridiculous to Monty and he didn't want to believe it.

Monty winced as he heard the pain filled sound escape from his friend and lifted the cup to her lips so that she wouldn't have to put any effort into holding the cup herself. If just the slightest of movements caused her so much pain, he hated to think how much it would hurt if she tried to walk in her current state. "How are you feeling?" the question was stupid, he knew that she couldn't be feeling too good, especially after everything she'd been through, but that was the question that got asked whenever somebody was ill or injured. The fact that she was at least trying to smile gave Monty hope that maybe she was feeling at least a tiny bit better than she'd felt earlier. Admittedly, it was nice to see Harper smiling again, especially after what they'd done to her, Monty could still hear her screams, even though he'd like to forget about everything that had happened in that room completely.
He felt confident that physically Harper would recover if they made it out of Mount Weather alive, psychologically it might be a different story, he didn't know how deeply having her body drilled into and her bone marrow taken, had affected her but it definitely hadn't been a walk in the park. "I'd offer to get you something to eat but we're running a little short on cake now" he tried to smile, to crack a joke and make light of their situation but there wasn't a lot to laugh about, not anymore when it seemed as though every second could be their last. "Don't worry, Jasper's got a plan... We're getting out of here" making empty promises seemed like the best thing he could do at the moment, offer her false reassurance to at least ease her mind. Monty trusted Jasper, he didn't exactly know what the plan was, or even if there was a plan but he knew that he trusted Jasper and that was enough for now.

Monty woke with a start, he hadn't slept through a whole night in a long while, not since what had happened at Mount Weather. Sleep was an impossibility after what he'd done, he'd helped to destroy a whole community of people, part of him wanted to argue that what they'd done was perfectly justifiable, if they hadn't done it then they'd all have been killed but the other part of him knew that they'd been wrong, they'd killed innocent people to save their own skins. The decision he'd made had cost him his best friend, Jasper wanted nothing to do with him after Maya's death and Monty knew better than to try to explain that they'd never meant to hurt her, they just had to save their friends, that was their priority.
Kicking the blanket off of himself, he sat up in his bed and looked around the empty room, it was so quiet, Monty didn't really expect anyone else to be up in the middle of the night apart from maybe a couple of guards. Swinging his legs over the edge of the bed, his feet hit the cool floor and he shivered slightly, he crossed over to where he'd carelessly thrown his jacket and pulled it on, immediately thankful for the extra layer. Wandering around in the middle of the night had become a habit of his in recent days, whenever he woke up and was unable to get back to sleep he'd take a walk to calm his nerves in an attempt to get some sleep when he returned to his room, sometimes it worked and others it didn't. Opening the door to his room slowly, he poked his head out into the hallway, the last thing he needed was a guard questioning him on why he was up at such a time, but there didn't seem to be anyone around so without bothering to put anything on his feet he slipped out of the room and started down the hallway.
Usually he just spent his nights walking around, without a real destination in mind but this time was different, he just wanted to be alone where there wasn't a chance of anyone finding him. There weren't many places you could be alone in Camp Jaha, there were too many people who were ready to poke their noses into your business if they were given the chance. So Monty went to the only place he could think of, the hangar bay. He didn't think anyone would be down there at this time of night and if he was lucky then he wouldn't be found either, it took him a surprisingly short amount of time to get there and when he did, he immediately walked over to the rover that he saw was parked and sat himself down against the wall behind it, he didn't quite know why he felt the need to hide away when he was pretty sure that nobody would find him anyway, but it just felt right, in a weird way knowing that even if somebody did come in then they wouldn't be able to see him with a quick glance.

Things at Mount Weather had gone from bad to worse for Monty and his friends, there was a big difference between knowing that the mountain men were bleeding grounders and being strapped down and having someone drill into your bones to get to your bone marrow. Monty hadn't been in the cage for long before Jasper had arrived with President Wallace and rescued himself and Harper. Harper hadn't been so lucky, Monty didn't know how many times they'd drilled into her, but from how weak she was, he figured a lot. Now they'd been locked inside their room, he didn't know why when earlier they'd been given the all clear from the President that they could go home to their people, but whatever the reason was, they all knew that it wouldn't be good.
Monty was sitting on his bed, staring at the closed doors as if he could magically make them open, it definitely felt like they were prisoners now, even if it hadn't before. He couldn't help but feel like they should've listened to Clarke, she'd been right about Mount Weather all along but they'd foolishly thought that it was safe, that they were finally safe. Getting to his feet, he noticed that Harper was lying in her own bed, he felt a little guilty for leaving her alone, she needed rest but he'd seen exactly what they'd done to her in that room and he knew that the memories wouldn't leave her that quickly. Crossing over to one of the tables, he poured out a cup of water from the jug that was sitting there, it wasn't exactly fresh but it was still good to drink, especially when they had nothing else in the room that was fit to quench their thirst. Walking back over to Harper's bed, he reached up and put a hand on the bars as he looked up at her "I thought you might be thirsty" he muttered the words and he lifted the cup up a little to show her what his intentions were. She'd been in the cage longer than he had been and he didn't even know if they'd given her food or water whilst she was there, he doubted it and as her friend it was his job to look after her if she couldn't look after herself.

Monty hadn't really planned on walking around Arkadia so late at night, if he was honest he had a lot on his mind and it just sort of happened. He'd just found out that his mother was alive... And his father was not. He'd had a lot of time to mentally prepare himself for his parents deaths, he hadn't even expected to see them ever again, but it had still been a blow to hear it out loud and then they'd got a new lead on Clarke, they'd been searching for her for months, ever since she'd left them after Mount Weather and when they'd finally tracked her down she'd been taken by a grounder who seemed pretty hostile if you looked at what he'd done to Bellamy's leg. Bellamy had taken it pretty hard when he'd failed to bring her home, he'd even continued to follow her when he only had one good leg and was bleeding heavily from the other.
Without even thinking about where he was going Monty walked the familiar halls of Arkadia, not making any conscious decisions about where he was going. He stopped suddenly when a noise dragged him from his thoughts and he looked around to see that he was near medical, he didn't go there often, he'd had no reason to go but he didn't couldn't ignore the sounds that he'd heard. What if somebody needed something, sick and injured people needed things, didn't they? He didn't know, he was no doctor but he assumed they needed stuff. Changing direction, he walked slowly down the hall to medical, stopping in the doorway to look around the room. What he saw made him roll his eyes "Of course it would be you" he called across the room to the man that was trying to leave his bed.
He should've expected it to be Bellamy, of course he wasn't going to sit still when Clarke could be in danger "you should get back into bed before you make your leg worse" Monty told him as he walked across the room and stopped next to him, putting a hand on his arm as he nodded towards the bed, he didn't expect the man to listen to him, he never listened about these things. He needed to rest if he wanted his leg to heal but that didn't mean that he was going to "don't make me go get Abby" he'd barely managed to persuade Bellamy to come back to Arkadia with them when they'd found him and he was not afraid to go get back up if he needed it, Bellamy could barely walk, he wouldn't get far before Monty brought someone to get him back into bed.

Monty was laying on the floor of the cave, every so often he'd let out an exaggerated sigh and then roll over onto his other side. He didn't know how long he'd been laying there awake for, it felt like hours had passed but there was no way for him to actually measure how much time had passed. Every time he closed his eyes he saw things that he didn't want to see, he was afraid of what he would see in his dreams if he slept. Propping himself up on his elbows, his gaze swept the cave and he noticed that everyone else was asleep, of course he noticed that Bellamy wasn't in the cave with them and he remembered vaguely that he was taking first watch tonight.
Letting out an exaggerated sigh, Monty heaved himself to his feet, brushing himself off to rid himself of any dirt that was clinging to his clothes. Walking silently towards the mouth of the cave as to avoid waking the others, he didn't want to deprive them of their sleep when he knew just how hard it could be to drift off again once you'd been woken. Exiting the cave, it took Monty a while to notice the figure standing by the rover and identify it as Bellamy, but once he had, he moved slowly towards him, his hands in his pockets. He hadn't been meaning to sneak up on him but he noticed the way he turned to check who was approaching him, as if he'd expected a grounder instead of one of his friends.
"No" he muttered in response to Bellamy's question "sleep wasn't working out for me... So I thought I'd come out here and keep you company!" he tried to force a smile but he couldn't make it stay on his face, what was there to smile about? Everything seemed like it was falling apart, just a short while ago everything had been so normal and now it wasn't. In fact, Monty didn't think it would ever be normal again, not like it was, not now. When Bellamy asked him if he was okay, Monty's initial reaction was to shrug the question off but shrugging off a question was much easier when it didn't bring a painful lump to his throat, or make his hands clench into fists within his pockets. "Yeah... I'm good" he answered eventually, swallowing back the emotions that were building up within him and leaning against the rover "How about you? You okay? I heard that you've had a rough couple of days" the marks on Bellamy's face showed Monty just how rough his friend had, had it recently. The last time he'd seen him, before he'd left Arkadia, he hadn't been so cut up. Monty didn't know exactly what had happened, but he knew that whoever Bellamy had gotten in a fight with had really gone to town on his face and he couldn't imagine how painful his face was.

Monty nodded silently in response to Jasper asking him to stay and he swallowed back the lump that had formed in his throat, hearing Jasper admit to needing him almost made him want to cry as well. He'd always known that they needed each other, he couldn't imagine life without Jasper but they rarely said it aloud, he figured that they both just knew how the other felt. He just wanted to be able to make Jasper stop crying, but he didn't see that happening any time soon, maybe it would just be better if he was the supportive shoulder to cry on.
As he listened to Jasper describe his dream to him, he felt a shiver run up the length of his spine. The fact that his dream might actually come true for them was terrifying but Monty put on a brave face for his friend, even if his back was to him. "It's not going to be like that Jasper" he tried to reassure him, there was little they could do to actually avoid getting floated but Monty doubted that they'd be able to continue to think and to feel after they died, death was supposed to be peaceful, that's what his mother had told him anyway when he'd asked out of curiosity as a child. "It was just a nightmare, it's over now... Just remember to breathe" he could hear how Jasper sounded breathless and he was worried that he might have a panic attack if he didn't calm down.

Monty felt it the moment Jasper stopped fighting the tears and allowed himself to break down and admittedly he wasn't sure what to do, he couldn't remember the last time that Jasper had cried like this. He remembered crying as a kid, he remembered Jasper crying too, but not recently. "I'm great" he heard Jasper reply to him and the sob that shook his body made Monty want to take away all of his pain, it hurt to see him like this, especially as it was his fault they were in this situation in the first place and there was nothing he could do to alter their fate. Instead of stating the obvious and telling Jasper that he wasn't fine, Monty opted for a different approach "did you have a nightmare?" he asked him, his voice coming out gentle in the hopes of calming his friend.
He felt Jasper's hands cling to his arm and he let out a soft sigh into his shoulder as he heard the words "I hate the ark" leave his friend, before he felt Jasper move and the dull thud on the wall followed by a whimper and he both heard and felt Jasper begin to cry harder. Instinctively he tightened his grip on the other boy and shuffled closer to him so that there wasn't any space separating them "I know..." he mumbled, unable to find anything else to say to him "I'm sorry" the ark wasn't his fault, he couldn't control where they'd been born or that the earth was uninhabitable but he was the one who'd got them locked up, he was the one who screwed up and Jasper was now suffering because of him. "I'm here... I'm not gonna leave you" he didn't know if Jasper would appreciate his words, or think that he was getting weird on him but he'd willingly stay in his bed, holding him as he was until he fell asleep if he wanted him to.
