Nic listened to Clarke, taking in as much information as possible. It was important to know more about the people they were interacting with, that was for sure. "It’s ‘Ai laik – your first name – kom skaikru.” The words were unfamiliar, but that was the fun of it. It was a challenge and a practical one at that. “Sounds pretty similar to English, doesn’t it?”
She nodded. "Yes. It does." Then she thought about it before trying to say it herself. "Ai laik Nic kom skaikru." She said it slowly to let the foreign words roll off her tongue. It wasn't too hard, so she said it again and again until she got more confident. She smiled lightly to herself and looked at Clarke. "What else can you teach me?" So far things were going good and she was happy about it. Learning something new was fun, but she had never learned another language. Nic was eager to learn.

“Rebelling gets me nowhere.” Clarke told her. Nic gave a tiny smile, though tried to hide it. "Wise words. I wished everyone else thought the same as you." It was a little joke. If it did happen it would make her life that much easier, but at the same time there would be no excitement in working as a guard in the Skybox. Most of the boys weren't too hard to handle. They were only that, boys. They could kick and punch as much as they liked, they weren't getting out of there any sooner because of it.
Clarke thanked her again and Nic just smiled and waved. "I'll be seeing you." She turned and went to open the door. Pausing for a moment she turned to look over her shoulder at the girl, "Oh, and don't get too discouraged by some of the other guards. They're pretty much all hardasses." She closed the door before the other girl could reply. She wasn't sure why she said it, but it felt good. A lot of her coworkers were hardasses and they didn't know how to treat people. She just didn't have anyone to complain to. She liked this girl, but she knew she couldn't be too attached to her. That was the only problem. You couldn't make friends with the prisoners, most of them died anyway. Which was rather a sad thought. Nic shook her head of the thoughts and moved on to the next room, keeping her mind on the job. -----Clarke GriffinHey. Thanks for the thread! It's been fun.

There was a look in Raven's eyes that said that she felt the same as Nic did. About not having complete control over your own body, to have something help where it shouldn't necessarily be needed. And in that moment Nic knew she had come to the right person. There was a connection, and Nic had never known it before. It was exciting and yet a little scary. But the look was whisked away as Raven glanced down at the contraption that she hated, and yet is saving her life, day in and day out. It was a rather odd sensation, and even after all this time she was still not used to it. To hate something that helps make your life better was a terrible, yet almost necessary. She had yet to figure out how to balance those feelings.
Raven's eyes were wide with wonder, and it was intriguing to see someone actually appreciate the prosthetic, Nic certainly didn't. Most people shunned from it, and her when they saw it. But not Raven, and it was a slight relief. Nic had nodded to Raven to say it was ok for her to take, and Raven handled the leg carefully. All Nic could do was watch. And when she got offered the seat Nic couldn't help smile. It wasn't a gesture of 'you need help', it was genuinely a gesture of 'if you need it you can have it. It was kind.
She was luckily close enough to stretch her body out to the chair, and grab a hold of it with her hands, balancing herself out. With only two hops she made it to the chair and sat down, with a soft sigh. It gave her good leg a rest. A chance to calm down. Sitting on a chair with only one leg dangle over the seat was somehow Nic's preferred seating arrangement. Sure the prosthetic helped her to do her job and get around, but the hated the way if felt on her, and how heavy it was. She felt so free whenever it was off. But at the same time it reminded her of what she had lost.
At Raven's suggestion of making a few changes Nic grinned at her. "Do what you please. I wouldn't mind a change." And it was the truth. This thing hadn't been changed much in the years since it was built. If Raven had ideas she wasn't going to stop the girl. There was no point. If it could be better then she would try anything to get that done.

Nic couldn't help it. When Bellamy asked her the question that they were both thinking, she laughed. It was the most ridiculous question anyone had ever uttered. She shrugged, her laughter dying. It hadn't been a nice laughter either, once filled with an angry undertone. What could her answer be? She had tried to think about it. But she hadn't come up with anything. "I have no idea. It's probably just a stupid prank by some punks who take joy out of making other people suffer." She said a little bitterly, and then stopped herself short. Woah. She had never acted like this before. Not even when her leg had to be amputated in the first place. She shook her head and let out a long, deep breath. "Sorry."
She glanced down at her feet, or rather, her one foot and crossed her arms over her chest. "I probably shouldn't ask for your help. You need rest. I'm sorry." She stood up, and leaned a hand against the chair as she hopped around it. "I'll try searching it on my own." Now that her anger was gone, her head was clear. She couldn't ask this of Bellamy. This was a mistake.

Nic listened to Clarke explaining her own theory, about how the guards played a roll in reviewing. It was rather clever, and Nic just nodded along. "Exactly. I'm just glad someone understands. I don't think any of the other guards think about that either. It goes both ways." She shrugged a little with a small smile. "If they misbehave than we have to get more aggressive, which in turn, means we have to get aggressive. It's a bad cycle." Being a guard among the skybox was an interesting job. All these kids were here because of some crime or other, some worse than others. Ranging from stealing to murder. Which also meant there were some interesting characters. Nic had certainly met a whole range. "Though I'm glad you're not like the others." Clarke was smart enough not to get into trouble. It was only the first time that Nic had met her, but already she was in Nic's good books. Making her life just that little bit easier. --------Clarke Griffin

Nic sighed audibly when Bellamy opened the door. Suddenly her anger faded when she saw his face, and realised just how stupid she was being. She felt rude, for impeding. He glanced down at where her leg was supposed to be and glanced up at her face instead. He took a step to the side and she placed her hand on the doorframe, hobbling in. He asked her what happened while he grabbed a chair. It was nice, that he had immediately thought about grabbing a chair. But she didn't think much about it as her anger returned.
She hopped over to the chair and sat down, crossing her arms over her chest, giving a small huff of breath. "Oh. You know." She shrugged. "Someone stole my leg." She said it with a slight bitter undertone. There was no nice way to say it. She wondered how he would react. This whole incident was ridiculous, and Nic had no idea who could have taken her leg. It was such a strange and unfortunate thing to do.

Opening her eyes, Nic yawned. She lay there, staring at the ceiling, thinking about a dream she just had. She didn't really want to get out of bed, but knew she should. She had duties to adhere to, and peacekeeping to do. The usual. She dragged herself out of her daydreams with a loud sigh she sat up, drawing the covers from her. Today was another day. She stretched lightly as she swiveled her body around, her good leg swinging over the edge of the bed. She reached absentmindedly over for her prosthetic, which was leaning against the small beside table. She grunted a small, "ow" , as her hand hit the table, something that was rather unexpected for her. She frowned as she glanced to her left, and couldn't see her leg. It wasn't there. Glancing at the ground she began to feel a bit nervous. Where was it? It wasn't on the ground either.
Then she started to get angry as her eyes shifted around the room, not finding her leg anywhere. "Where in the-" She started, glaring even though no one was there. The anger that built up in her system was rather rare, as she most certainly wasn't an angry person. She begun to swear like crazy, and loudly too. If people outside they would have thought something crazy was going on. She was mad. Her leg was lost. It had to have been stolen. No other way. She wasn't one to lose the only thing that kept her alive. Sure the thing was a freaking pain in the ass, but at least she was able to work, and go for walks. She could live.
Standing up she placed her hand on her bed, which helped stabilise her. It was rather an uncomfortable position, but it was necessary, she had to reach her closet and grab some pants. Hopping and leaning against things she managed, and leaned her back against the wall and tugged her pants on. It was weird, seeing her right side all empty. The fabric not able to cling onto anything except thin air. She also put on her left shoe, no need for the right one at all. Bitterness was settling over her body as she glanced around her room for something to use as a crutch or walking stick, but there was nothing. Gah. She wanted to punch something. But she didn't have time. She had to go talk to the one person she knew would help her. Bellamy.
She ventured outside her door, and leaned against the walls, keeping herself upright. Since it was the morning most people were getting ready for the day, and a lot of them gave her weird looks as she hobbled along, slowly. She swore under her breath as she continued on, but finally made it to Bellamy's door, pounding on it. "Bellamy!" She said loudly, hoping like hell he was there. She didn't want to go find him somewhere else. She didn't have time for that.

Clarke proceeded to give a little history behind the language, and Nic took in every word. It was rather interesting that a language could develop for those reasons. It made it all the more intriguing. Nic had sat grabbed a chair and sat near Clarke, facing her. It's been a while she had any kind of lesson, and it excited Nic. "You know what Mochof or chof means?”
She had definitely heard the words before. "Does it mean thank you?" She said cautiously. Sometimes she could pick out certain words, but it was definitely something that you had to learn to fully pick up. Nic had never needed to learn a new language before, so the prospect was exciting, and it would certainly be useful. It showed that she respected their culture. Sure things had been difficult between the grounders and the arkers, but now was the time to change that relationship. Little things like this went a long way. So she hoped.
She was happy that Clarke was giving her this opportunity, and it gave them something to do for the day. It otherwise would have been a pretty dull day. --------------- Clarke Griffin

It seemed that for a moment Raven didn't realise what was going on, but once Nic had spoken she seemed to understand, and turned her back towards her. It was all very awkward, and it seemed that Raven wasn't good with awkwardness. Nic did NOT blame her. She felt just as awkward. She just had to get through this, it's not like Raven was looking anyway. Nic undid her pants, and pulled them down as fast as she could, letting them drop to the ground. Now was the difficult part, and for some reason her hands were shaking. She had never tried to undo them with someone standing so close. It was more that she was self conscious about her leg, and for some reason it never got easier to see it. It had been years, how was it that she still couldn't see it without cringing lightly?
Undoing all the buckles Raven asked her a question. About her name. "Oh." Nic said, leaning her body against a wall, she could already feel the weight of the prosthetic leaving. "The name's Nicolette. Nic is just easier to say." Though truthfully no one but her best friend had actually called her Nic, not until she had joined the guard, and had to talk to more people. For a while it had only been him. But she also thought that it made her sound more... Like a guard. There weren't a lot of girls in the guard, and a name like Nicolette was feminine, which she absolutely wasn't.
Finally she managed had gotten her leg off, and it clattered to the floor loudly. "Crap." She muttered as she wobbled. It was always an odd feeling, not having her weight distributed on her right side, it made her feel lighter, but more off balanced. That was why she was leaning against the wall. She had learned from experience that if she didn't lean against or sit on something she would fall over, and that was just embarrassing, and made life difficult. Quickly she bent down again and hopped while trying to get her pants back on. "I'm decent again." Nic finally told Raven. Grabbing her leg from the ground, she held it in her arms. It was a pretty big thing with her being tall. The thing was pretty ugly, just a metal infrastructure, with a metal foot on the end, her boot now still connected.

Seeing the maps, it really brought home how important it was. Clarke quickly went into business mode, pointing at the map after a brief greeting. She explained what the plan was. Right. In and out. Looking at the intricate map she thought. "Well. There would be no point going in through the front. It would be too heavily guarded." She said, staring at the map. There weren't many ways in which they could get into the mountain. It was a bunker after all. There shouldn't be many ways to get in. But maybe... Just maybe that could be the way out, just not in. Though for now she kept the thoughts to herself. They had to establish a way in first.
Nic knew how important this mission was. This plan HAD to work. They had to get their people out of there. They had to save as many people as possible. The whole situation was a war. But a war they couldn't possibly win in traditional ways. The normal strategies that Nic had read about would not work. This was a very delicate situation, and the wrong plan could unravel it. It could leave all their people dead. Nic couldn't let that happen. And she was sure Clarke wouldn't let that happen either.

The moment she got into the car she sighed, smiling. She ran her hand over what she knew was called the dashboard. This was crazy. Never in a million years had she thought she would be sitting in a car. On the ground. Though she had never thought she would ever be on the ground either. Everything was new and different. Once the car started the vibration was an odd sensation. Then they started to drive. It was strange, being inside a moving thing. Sure the Ark had been moving, but this was different. Way different. And it excited Nic.
They didn't get far before the engine died while the girl was trying to accelerate. “This was not planned.” Nic gave a small chuckle. So far it had been exciting. But the engine finally started up again, after a little tinkering, turning the engine off and on. “I should probably not do that again. I can teach you how to drive later, if you want.” The girl suggested. For a moment Nic didn't quite compute what the girl was saying. What an amazing opportunity. "That... Sounds like a wonderful idea." She smiled happily, while glancing out at their surroundings.
It was a bit bumpy, but other than that, so far being in a car was amazing. To think that everyone used to drive around in these things, that it was normal. That there had been roads. All of it was so strange. And unbelievable. If Benny, her best friend, could only see her now... But he wasn't here anymore. So she just had to enjoy it for the both of them. "This. Is incredible." She spoke softly. For a moment she forgot her shyness, too interested in the car and the ride to feel nervous.

Nic was honoured. To be able to go to Polis with Clarke. It was an important job. Though she had thought that maybe they sent her because she was expendable, in case something happened. Or maybe because she was also a woman. Or maybe because Clarke knew her. Whatever the reasoning was, she got to go. It was exciting stuff, seeing Polis, being there, and learning and witnessing what went on. She couldn't be too invested in the surroundings, she had a job to do. But she could still appreciate the way the grounder's lived.
Today was a slow day, Clarke didn't need to go anywhere. So Nic was hanging around in the room, watching over Clarke. She stood, leaning against a wall, close to the window. The view was wonderful. Clarke suddenly suggested she learn the grounder's language, so that Nic could understand what was going on. Nic had never thought about it, learning the language. The question had brought Nic out of her thoughts and looked at the younger girl. "You think?" Nic asked. She smiled though, at the thought. "I think that's a great idea." It would be very interesting, learning. It couldn't hurt to learn more. Nic loved to learn, so why not add this into her knowledge. It could definitely come in handy.

Looking at Raven's reaction there was something in the pit of her stomach that made her feel somewhat better. There was no shock or disgust in the girl's eyes. Only excitement? Nic couldn't understand it, but she was surprised. She hadn't seen anyone excited by her prosthetic leg. No one. Not even Nic herself. She had only been glad that she didn't get kicked out of the guard after her accident. The insufferable thing had saved her life. In a matter of speaking. It was the only reason it kept her alive, kept her in the guard.
“Can I see it?” The words shocked her even more than the excitement in Raven's eyes. Nic was flabbergasted, not sure what to do or say. This was different. Different than any reaction she had ever gotten. There had been sympathy, shock, disgust, awkwardness, uncomfortable looks, and of course the shunning. This was a good different. She immediately liked the girl, even if she still felt self conscious about her leg. But before she could say anything Raven fixed her words, and told her she could fix it. Thank goodness, Nic thought with a slight sigh and a nod.
Then she was stuck. Right. She needed to take her leg off. The easiest way was to strip down and take it off that way. But... She didn't know Raven. Not at all. She wasn't going to just strip her pants in front of the girl. But she didn't want to walk all the way to the bathrooms and then back. That was her predicament. "Uh. I'll need to... take my pants off first." She said awkwardly. There was no way of saying it nicely. Her whole leg was a stupid, complicated contraption, which always reminded her that she wasn't quite whole, that she was always going to be different and that she was lucky to still be in the guard. It would always remind her of the accident that led up to this thing being attached to her leg by braces and buckles.

Nic was surprised at how softly Clarke spoke, “Thank you” It was a genuine thank you. Nic had never heard someone say thank you like that to her before. Especially not someone who was a prisoner. Not that she saw Clarke as one. Nic was just as surprised when the younger girl held her hand out. Nic gave a nod as she shook her hand, quickly pulling her hand away. It was best not to get too civil, no matter how nice they may seem. “Thank you. I’m glad you’re one of the guards here. It’s much easier to behave when you don’t get shoved around and when you’re treating like a human, not a waste of space.”
It was almost sad to hear her say those words. To know that there were guards that were disrespectful to the prisoners, sure they had broken the law, but just because they had didn't mean that they weren't getting punished. No need for extra violence that would waste everyone's time. Nic gave her a very small smile. "Well, even people like the guy next door," she pointed at the wall to her left, "who are frankly pieces of garbage, aren't a waste of space." She shrugged, glancing away from the girl, and looked at the wall, at the drawings. They were brilliant. It reminded Nic of her own stories, a way to pass a time, to forget about the bad thoughts. "Besides, if you get treated like a human, then you'll hopefully behave like a human. That's not something they teach you throughout training." It was important to remember that they were all just humans, and even humans make mistakes. Humans also have emotions. And emotions were an important part of this job. People were going to try and manipulate those so that you would mess up and they could do what they wanted. So it was important to protect emotions too. But sometimes it was good to show a little emotion, to people who deserved them, like Clarke. She seemed like a decent human being. No need to treat her as something other than that. The little things counted.

Today was an important day. It was time for some planning. A plan to get the delinquents out of Mount Weather. It was such an important job, and she was honoured to help out with the planning. She was glad to be able to help. She didn't have a lot of experience with things like planning, other than the stories in her mind, but she hoped that she could come through for Clarke and the others. She wanted to be useful.
Nic took a deep breath just before she entered the planning room. It was all so official, and she seemed to be one of the first ones there. She wasn't surprised, that was her, always early for everything. So she waited around. Clarke had approached her earlier that day to help with the planning, which had surprised the guard. But Nic accepted readily. It was strange to her, to have Clarke be in a higher position than her, when only months earlier Nic had been in that higher position. How times had changed. She didn't mind. Clarke seemed to be a natural born leader, and she seemed to have grown up a lot while she was down on the ground. In a good way. And now here she was, after escaping from Mount Weather. Crazy, crazy times, Nic thought to herself.
She spotted the girl and approached her, giving her a small smile, hopefully to lighten the mood just a little. "Hi, Clarke." She paused a moment. "Thanks again for letting me come along." It seemed that their relationship was built on some sort of mutual respect, which seemed to make everything a little bit easier. It meant Nic could easily talk to her, and would just as easily die for her, protect her, because that not only was her job, but with that respect it would be easy, no doubt about it. It was because Clarke was a good leader, from what she's heard and seen.
