a son worth fighting for
Marcus was in hell. The hell was all in his head, and it was hard to deal with everything that was hitting him. He felt pain everywhere and hunger; but he couldn't think over the guilt that was sweeping over him for everything that he had done. Abby walked over toward him, and he didn't even see her until she knelt down before him. He clung to her int hat moment, like she was the life boat and he would drown without her. He had done so much to kill the ones that he swore to protect. He had hunted, and advanced on every one he cared about. He had--Bellamy. He had almost killed the man he often thought of as his son. He looked down at his hands, which now felt too weak to move, and knew that his 'son' would not be wearing bruises int he shape of his fingers. Bellamy could have shot him, and over powered him; but Marcus knew that the younger man would never do that. Not to him. And he hated that ALIE had used him like that. Used him to hurt the man that Marcus had given up everything for once.
It took a little while before he could stand on unsteady legs, and notice that Bellamy was not here. When Marcus did find him, he felt so much guilt, and pain--not just from his body but from his heart. He had nearly killed this man, and the worst thing he could imagine was living with that memory. He wasn't sure that he could have lived with himself if he had. Walking slowly, and a bit wobbly, over to his son-like friend, Marcus stared up at him for a long moment. He first looked at the pain he had inflicted, before he looked at his face. He wasn't a man that showed his emotions well, but in this moment he could only hope that Bellamy knew that Kane would rather die then hurt him--a fact that he once proved by not running Blake over, thus giving up and being arrested, knowing Pike would kill him for this. But that was something different. So different from this moment.
"Bellamy," He said his name in a horse voice that cracked. Not able to express what he needed to say in that moment, Marcus stood there for a long moment just staring at the man he loved, before stepping forward and wrapping his arms around the fitter man. His arms hurt too much to lift them around Bellamy's neck, but he forced them to wrap around his shoulders and hold him to himself. "I'm sorry," he breathed out. He wished Bellamy had just killed him--though he was also glad to be alive, he would not want to risk killing Bellamy again. It hurt to pull Blake in close, but Marcus couldn't express what he had to say in this moment with words.

Bellamy walked up to stand beside him, and Marcus didn't speak first. He wanted to know what was happening inside the younger man's head, and the best way to learn that was to give Bellamy control of the conversation. "I had wanted to join the guard to protect my family. To give them the best opportunity I could." He could see that. Marcus had personally floated the officer that had taken advantage of Aurora; though that had been slightly personal too. Aurora and Marcus had . . . . and that was a long time ago. "I want to believe that I can help make a difference. That I can help protect our people." Kane honestly believed that if Bellamy learned to really work the system that he could one day build a city that rivaled the ones that he wanted to try to build.
It was his next words that made Marcus turn his head to look at him. "But I pulled out that radio to cut communication with the Ark. I failed our people so many times." The radio. He knew that Abby had put everything into the radio that came down with her pod and Raven. He had not asked why it took so long to work, only assuming that it had been damaged in the drop. Between that and the kids taking off their bands, it had been the proof he needed to push for the culling. "Do you really believe this can do that?" Bellamy asked, finally looking at him. "That we can make things different?" Marcus didn't say anything right away, as the realization of what had actually happened on the ground was starting to come to him. It wasn't hard to guess why. Blake had been an wanted man until Jaha pardoned him in return for the name of the guard (and the fact that it was a guard had pissed Marcus off, especially since he had been the one people blamed) that had gotten him to do it.
Kane watched Bellamy's face for a long moment, but then decided that Bellamy was already pardoned, and the punishment he would be giving himself would be worse then any pointless retaliation that Marcus could give him. And he didn't even think Bellamy needed punishment. The fault was not in the him, but in the one who used it to his advantage. Lifting his hand, Marcus rubbed over the growing stubble there, and took a deep breath., before speaking in a tone that wasn't as sure fire and bold as his normal one. "We had known about the flaw in the air system for a year by the time we sent the kids down, and talks of the culling had been there." He looked away from Bellamy, not proud of how he had ignored the hope and only worked toward his own goal. "I never put faith in the Earth being livable. I held meetings, and went behind Jaha and Abby's backs to push the votes I needed." He had been so sure. SO very sure that was the only way. "I had a someone I cared deeply about, and even when they could no longer support me---I was so sure that the only way to save our people was to reduce how many I was trying to save."
He ran his hand through his hair, and then dropped it; turning to face Bellamy. "I am the one who put the idea forward, son, and I am the one who used everything that happened down here to make it happen. You didn't do this on your own. I take full responsibility for each of the lives I took." Reaching his hand out to touch Bellamy's shoulder, Marcus's tone begin to return to normal. "We cannot change the actions of our past. But here we can make sure we are better then who we were before. We are doing away with corporal punishment. I want to lead our people with hope rather then with fear. You gave then a bit of that when you returned the children to us. You built the first walls here, and showed the people we could survive. I didn't understand that when I first came down. I need someone there to help me see what I miss. Someone who wants peace, and a second chance as much as I do. Will you help me? "

Marcus Kane had made poor choices before. He had gotten 320 of his own people killed, before he was even Chancellor. He knew about the weight that came with making sure your people stayed alive. He knew the burden of failing them. He also knew that killing only lead to more killing--these were things that he wished Pike understood more. That killing your friends, because of fear, only left you without allies. He could forgive that, but Pike was desperate to hold onto power, and he was willing to do whatever it took to make it happen.
Marcus stood against one of the outer walls of the fallen Ark, and was waiting the happenings inside a building not far from him. He was standing casually, but he knew everyone around him knew that he was spying. Openly spying. He wanted Pike to know that he was watching. "Sir, I need to speak with you," Looking down at one of his---one of Pike's guards, Marcus said nothing. "It's important," Still he said nothing, while be tried to gauge what the girl was up too. "Regarding Pike." But she had his attention.
Pushing from the wall, Marcus gave a single nod, "Not here." She could be a spy, sent to watch him, but he liked to thin he knew which of this form guards were still loyal to him. He wouldn't risk their lives by allowing them to get involved, but he wasn't going to dismiss them and make them feel like they were all alone. So instead he lead her over to an empty fire pit. No one was around them, and talking wasn't a crime (yet) so he sat down on the edge and waited for her to join him. "Before you continue, you should know that just talking to me will have Pike looking at everything you do a bit closer." It was the only warning he would give her. She wasn't a kid, she didn't need him to hold her hand.

It had been a hard three weeks since the fall of the mountain, but their people were coming out strong. Marcus stood at the doorway into the Ark and watched as a group of them were making a garden, while others were working on a well. The wall was becoming thicker to protect them, but the truce was holding. It seemed they had finally found peace. Marcus hoped it would last. They needed some hope right now.
Turning from the door, he walked into the metal halls of the fall space ship. His boot echoed with muted thuds as he moved deeper into the building to get to the work room that he and Abby had made into their office of sorts. He hoped she wasn't in any pain. She was so beautifully stubborn! The men in the mountain had drilled her (a sight that still gave him nightmares), and he was hoping that with the time that had past the pain was lessening.
He pushed into the room without knocking, and walked to the table. Proping up to half sit on it, Marcus looked over the map while taking a drink from the cup in his hand. He was alone in the room, but he knew Abby would join him soon. They had come so far since their battles for power on the Ark. He never dismissed what he did to her, or how close he came to killing the woman he now valued above most other people here. That was a lie. He knew that he loved her. The moment he had seen her on the table, he had known---she was something more then a friend.
Marcus Kane just didn't know what that was yet.

He had not been gone for an extended time. Days he thought, but he didn't know for sure. It was hard to keep track when he couldn't see the sun. Kane a gone to talk to the commander and look for the kids. He had hoped to make peace after the kids here had made war. Instead, just moments after he sent the two men with him back to camp, the grounder prisoner turned on him and kicked him in the head. Marcus didn't awaken until he was being forced to walk with a bag over his head. They pulled it off and dumped him into a holding cell--and for the first time in his life he was speachless, because Jaha walked out of the shadows.
The grounders had sent a girl in to make sure one fo the killed the other, and she had told Marcus that she thought him honorable, and his desire for peace was true. She had been less pleased with Jaha and they had beaten, before sending him away. And so, Marcus became a guest of the commander. He respected her power, even if her demands were troubling ones. She wanted peace, and he wanted to help give that.
And so, she sent him back to his own camp to make sure they gave up Finn. What Marcus found, was chaos. Jaha was locked up for treason, Abby had the people ready to fight a war--when none of them had seen a war before. They had fought in the council chamber, but nothing had really been decided. So now he moved to medical, and pulled off his jacket. He had slit his own wrist so Jaha would not have to kill him, and he needed it looked at. He also planned to ask Abby what she planned to do, and try to talk some reason into her.

Strep. She had told him that someone had gotten strep and he needed to be inoculated. Marcus was angry. He didn't wear his anger like he had in this youth, so the only signs that he was angry was in his still he was. His expression and tight shoulders. She'd lied to him. He wasn't surprised that she had lied to him, but he was angry she had done it. The lost of her daughter had softened him for a moment while he was arresting her, but when the damn pod launched he wanted to shake her. The kids were not going to make it. Earth was not livable. She had sent one more person down to die, and all to stop him from trying to save the rest of the people! It was bad enough that she had Jaha abstaining his vote, and they were waiting a few more days!
They had gone a week with no deaths, and he had thought her up to something when she had gone to Mecca station 9 times, but finding out this? He took a deep breath, to calm himself. Nigel had sold her out. He had been trying to float her for years, and Abby knew it. She had risked everything for a lost cause and he was angry she couldn't see that.
Pushing open the door to the room she was being held in he walked briskly to the table and leaned on it, so he towered over her. "The people are getting restless because once again something launched to Earth." She had done this. Stirred the pot. He had told her in the hallway that he could try to save her, and Raven (as Marcus didn't want to see her floated, just out of his way) but after what she had done he didn't see how. Jaha had used his powers instead. "Was her life worth it? Was your life worth it?" Damn it! He knew she was hurting because of her daughter, but he she wanted to save people he had told her how!

Marcus both agreed with and hated the idea. Ever since Jake Griffin had found the flaw which would eventually kill them all, the plan of 'how to save the human race' had been something they were desperately trying to find. The plan was suggested that they send some people down to discover if the Earth was livable. Marcus agreed with this part. He didn't think it was, he was a believer of science and facts and every project they had run said the year needed more time. He was willing to try it if it meant they MIGHT have been wrong. It was also suggested that they send people down who would not have been of value to the whole. With this, Marcus agreed. He didn't want the best of everything going down, because when they died of radiation then the knowledge would be lost.
Where he disagreed with, was sending a bunch of kids down. The every idea was against logic and reason. IF the Earth was survivable--what then? The were kids with no knowledge, and most of them violent. However, Marcus was one to pick his battles. He would send the kids down, and it would give the Ark a few more months of air. He didn't like it, but he would see it done. Even if they sent others, eventually they would be right back at looking at them again.
It had been a busy day int the medical bay, which was why Abigail Griffin had not come tot he council meeting. That, and because it had been known her daughter was one of the ones who would be sent down. Believing her vote to be compromised, she had not been told about the meeting. Walking down the hall to her rooms, Marcus heard the thud of his boots echo slightly against the metal hallways. Ominous thuds that warned of bad news. He paused outside her door before pressing the pad of keys there. While he could easily just walk in if he wanted, as the head of the guard he had access to every area on the Ark, he instead buzzed to let her know he was here.

Clarke seemed to shift in his arms. Not physically but emotionally. He could see the panic and pain there, and Marcus held her to him tighter. It wasn't a hard leap to make. The men here couldn't handle the radiation of the outside world, and then they had died suddenly. Clearly somehow--or someone one had let it in. The way Clarke was crying suggested the rest. Marcus knew all too well what it was like to have the weight of so many on your shoulders. He had been so sure that the ground wasn't ready for life that he had pushed for over 300 of his own people to die. And it had been pointless in a way.
Pulling her tighter to him, he didn't say anything until she was done. "You did what you had to do." He reminded her, "They would have only kept killing." That wouldn't make it easier. He didn't want her to see the bodies here, or everywhere else. She didn't need that in her mind as she tried to move past this. She was his daughter, and he was going to protect her. Somehow. Right now the only way he knew how to do that was by try to make sure she knew that he supported her in this.

Hope. It was the most dangerous and needed thing they had. They needed it like they needed to breathe. Marcus was looking out one of the windows and watched Earth spin on. He had never thought he would step foot on the ground. Now he was standing here and would likely be there tomorrow. He knew the risks were high, and that many would die on the way down, but the knowledge that they would just die up here was enough to make everyone want to try. Everyone had a job to do right now, but Marcus was taking a moment. Earth.
Turning from it he walked to the Tree. His mother had spent so long taking care of it, and her last words to him had been of taking it down. Picking it up, Marcus carried it with him. When she had asked, he had dismissed her, and she'd died moments later. He would see it done for her. He was carrying with him when he came upon Sinclair. It could not be easy for the man to make the choice they were asking of him, and Marcus respected the man greatly for doing this. It wasn't as if Sinclair was choosing who lives and who dies, he was just going to tell them the facts as best as he could.
Marcus sat the tree down and walked closer. "Have you any luck trying to pinpoint the weaker areas?" He asked, looking down at the blue prints.

At Sinclair's last words Marcus paused there and tried to think of the best thing to say. He had no family of his own, and that was a long standing regret of his. Especially after the lost of his mother. "We had brief contact with Jaha after we landed, and from his point of view we know others made it down. We just don't know where they are, or even which ones they are." But he knew that there were many who died in the travel to Earth, which is why he was not assigning anyone to look for the others right now. They needed to work on what they knew for sure they could save. The kids that they'd sent down here.
Reaching out to Sinclair, Marcus rested his hand on the man's shoulder. "There is still a chance," he tried to encourage, even though they both knew the odds weren't good. "Once we find the rest of the kids, we will begin looking for them." Which did lead Marcus into some good news. "Speaking of, one of your students, Raven Reyes, was found with the kids. She was injured, but Doctor Griffin is looking at her now." Reyes was going to be pardoned for her crimes with the rest of the kids, so if she lived then she would not face any charges. That had been the promise Jaha made to them, and Kane was doing to make sure it was kept. None of the kids would see any charges as long as they followed the rules from here on out. The kids had really made a mess of things though, starting a war with the locals, and from what he had learned--killed many of them. He had always disliked the idea of sending kids down, even though he didn't push hard to stop it from happening, but now he wished they had done things differently.

It had been during battle, but not only had Jackson been sent to where the fighting would not happen, but there hadn't been any real fighting. Jackson believed in saving people, and out there you had to be real to kill. Sadly that was something Marcus had done on his first day on the ground; and he had seen enough of it since. Yet it would do Jackson no favors to hid him behind these walls forever. Which was why Marcus was going to now agree.
Normally Marcus would have tried to use someone's first name here, to show that he was thinking of the person they were and not the position they held; but as he didn't know Jackson's he couldn't do that without asking. "I will let you know when the next group is going out. Pick someone who has some training that can go with you, and they can help you carry whatever you need." And protect him in case something went wrong. Peace was holding, but there was more then just the grounders out there. "I rather you not take Monty Green, or Bellamy Blake; but anyone else." Marcus knew he couldn't protect them forever, but he wasn't going to make them go back into that place. If they went on their own accord, then they could go, but he wasn't going to ask them to ever do it.

Marcus respected Sinclair, and thought him one of the brightest minds they had right now. They would need that in the coming days if they were going to find a way to get any sort of power or defense. Kane wasn't unreasonable, he knew the crash could have taken out all the systems and the damage might bee too much for Sinclair to fix. Even with the help of the few people they had down here. Rayes could have been helpful but she had been shot, and Abby wasn't sure she would walk again. There was also Wick, whom Marcus had assigned to work under Sinclair.
"If you need anything just let me know." Because right now they needed this to help the people. "We don't have many people down here who know what they are doing, but whoever we have to spare can be sent here to sort scraps or gather whatever you need." Man power was about all they had right now. He'd built a new guard up to help protect them, but the people were not pleased at the children not being within reach.
Speaking of children, Marcus knew that Sinclair too had a family. No children (not that Marcus knew of at least) but a wife. "We are still hoping we can find some of the other stations." But many had exploded on the way down here, and Marcus wasn't sure which ones it was yet. Until then he didn't want Sinclair to loose him. "Once we know for sure, I will make sure someone tells you first thing." Reaching forward Marcus put his hand on the other man's shoulder in comfort, before dropping it.

Marcus favored boldness. It was the trait that he most approved it in people. When something needed to be done, he wanted to see people rise up. He didn't like it when the broke rules or risked lives in doing it, but he liked it when people knew what they wanted and made it happen. Such as with Callie who had been a student seeking him out for advice, knowing that he shouldn't have had time for her questions. Such as Abby, and recently Bellamy had proven to been someone Marcus was proud of. It was a trait he often tried to make people have around him.
So when Jackson looked away from asking, even though Marcus planned to say yes, he pushed for more. If he wanted to know, Marcus needed to know he would be able to handle it. Especially since doctors were rare on the ground and Jackson was a good one. "You don't think you could just make a list of things we might need and see if the guard can find them?" He asked, mostly to see if Jackson would make his case, or if he would back down. The world outside these walls were harsh, and if Jackson was going out there then he would need to show he was ready.

"Decline," Marcus repeated, trying to keep the smug look from his face, pleased with the answer. "You don't enjoy the idea of building some of the first foundations for our people's continue survival here?" Marcus wouldn't want that for him either. He was proud of Bellamy, and even though he had arrested him before, and had not approved of his actions--his ability to keep the people around him safe was a valuable skill. One Marcus planned to use to the fullest. He wanted to help Bellamy learn to not just lead a group of kids, but a Battalion of guardsmen. Perhaps even a city. Marcus knew that his (though technology Abby's) leadership here could not last forever. There wasn't many leaders left amidst there group. Marcus knew who had potential.
Marcus had to hold back a grin as he set forward, leaning over the table slightly. "I read your file when we first started trying to figure out who helped you shot Jaha. Made a study of you to figure out who would trust you." Shumway had been trusted, and not considered, and the betray had hurt Marcus. Though he had floated his own father, and floating Shumway had been an easier choice then that. Not that it had come to floating him. He had ended his own life before they could get to him. "Your test scores were good, you were resourceful. That was what was said about you the most often. Perhaps you rather you take a more technical trade. You have friends in Engineering, mechanics. We will need farmers. Are any of these appealing to you?" The way he said it made it clear Marcus didn't think so. That this was not even a real question.
"Because if not, then I have a job in mind for you. One that would depends on your resourcefulness, and an understanding of this world that you might have better then the rest of us here." Marcus finished his drink, and sat his cu[ aside. "If you can find peace as a farmer, take it. You've earned it. You did what no one else might have been able to do here, and you should know that you did good, son. I'd like to see what more good you can do." Standing up, Marcus picked up the jacket in one hand, still not showing nay signs of handing it over. "Take some time to think about, and then come see me." With that Marcus handed over the jacket to Bellamy, and the rested his free hand on his shoulder.
"I don't know what the guard means to you. But on the ground we can make things different." With that Marcus walked past him and left Bellamy with the offer of joining the guard and time to think. Marcus walked outside, and moved to stand near the wires that protected the place. Looking out, he saw a world of chance.

Marcus' lips twitched into a half smile as Jackson pointed out that Abby could well come in here tomorrow and start making demands. That was very true of her. She, like her daughter, never met a cause they wouldn't fight to the end for. For most of their time on the Ark they had been at odds politically, but ever since right before the culling they had started working together more. When he had found her after the Exodus ship took down the Ark, Marcus had become almost protective of her. He knew that by now he was falling for her.
Tilting his head toward the couch in the room, he spoke to Jackson. "I have made sure that if she does return early she can do it sitting down." That way the weight was off her leg as much as possible. "But for as long as Clarke is out there, Abby is not going to sit long." She had always been determined to find Clarke. Marcus didn't have any children, a regret he had for his life, but he could imagine that it was a love that was stronger then anything else. He had come close to marrying a few times, but work had been more important to him in his youth. A trait he paid for now. "What about the others that were drilled. Rayes?" He knew there had been others, and wanted a report on them.
