She'd recognised her mistake the moment that she'd touched her face, it was the mistake of a child and she should've known better. It was the panic that had pushed all rational thought from her mind and caused her to act on impulse, the instinct to wipe the venom from her face screaming over the knowledge inside her head that such an action would only make matters worse.
Costia could hear Lincoln as he ran back towards her, knowing that he would've abandoned the hunt the moment that he'd heard her screams. She still flinched when he touched her, his strong grip on her wrists almost painful as he prevented her from raising them back to her face. After the initial shock had passed, she let out a shuddering breath of relief- because now it didn't matter that her sight had been stolen from her, Lincoln meant safety...
"I can't see" she forced herself to repeat the words, her voice was calmer but still shook with residual fear. She had met people who'd lost their sight, it was not a life that she wanted for herself, no... The snakes bite would be more merciful. "Lincoln, I can't see anything" he was speaking to her, his voice calm as if he wasn't at all worried by the panic that was creeping back into her voice. "I'm going to pick you up." Nodding to show that this was okay, she allowed him to lift her and her arms immediately wrapped around his neck, anchoring herself there as if she was afraid she might fall. "Just... Don't drop me" she hated how scared those words made her sound, but as he began to move her grip only tightened around him, each time a shadow passed over her vision- she flinched, expecting to make contact with some obstacle she couldn't see.

Just like that, all the happiness and excitement that she'd felt at her friends confession dissolved, because how could she approve of such a relationship? Skaikru had invaded their land, murdered their people, shattered the fragile peace that they'd been living in. She clutched at the edge of the table, holding on so tight that her knuckles turned white. Maybe it was to ensure that she didn't lash out at him, so that she wouldn't hit him in a fit of rage- because she was so angry that she didn't doubt that she could hit him, but despite all he'd done by sharing his news with her, she did not wish harm on him. "Why?" she demanded, all previous warmth of friendship gone from her voice. She didn't know what was triggering her anger more, the betrayal itself or the fact that Lincoln had asked for her to keep such information a secret, because by asking such a thing of her, he was surely asking her to commit a betrayal herself.
He was a fool and she was the idiot that still cared for him despite all that he'd done. Taking a deep breath, she tried to calm herself, so that she wouldn't say or do anything that she'd later regret. However, it was impossible to ignore the obvious. By sharing this information, he was endangering her as well as himself, dragging her into the whole mess- maybe that was what she was really mad about, or maybe not. "You chose an outsider over your own people, over the coalition, over Trikru, over me..." she trailed off, unable to keep her voice steady. "Even having this conversation endangers both of us, you know what they'll do to you if your relationship is discovered and what they'll do to me if they find I had any knowledge of it and you still ask me to keep your secret?" she wanted to tell him that this couldn't continue, to urge him to cease contact with the sky girl, but she knew that any effort to convince him to do so would be a waste of time. He'd made his choice. Lincoln

Random Number Generator Chose 26.My muse is temporarily blind. Costia walked beside Lincoln, focussed on tracking the deer that they'd spent that morning hunting, sure that it couldn't have gone much further. Spear in hand, she was careful about where she placed her feet, wanting to keep any noise to a minimum so that they didn't disturb their prey. Hunting was risky in an environment that was designed to kill, but both hunters had grown up here and knew how to identify any potential hazards. Maybe she wasn't cautious enough, maybe she was so focussed on the hunt that she failed to hear the warning of the reptile that she was unknowingly approaching but the moment she realised her error, it was too late. The snake had already identified her as a threat that it needed to be rid of. Before the young woman could react the snake lashed out, spitting deadly venom that flew straight at her face.
An involuntary cry left the young woman as she felt the venom touch her skin and her first reaction was to attempt to wipe it away from her eyes, that was her second mistake. The action only helped to rub the venom into her eyes and the moment it entered her eyes, she felt it begin to burn. Stumbling backwards, she dropped her spear in a panic as she brought her other hand up to rub at her face, but the burning only intensified. "Lincoln!" she cried out for her friend, forcing herself to lower her hands from her face so that she could look around for her companion but as she opened her eyes to look around, her heart gave a jerk of panic at what she saw- or what she didn't see. Her vision had blurred so much that she could barely distinguish between what was in front of her. The colours of the forest all blended together and made it impossible for Costia to tell what was in front of her "I can't see!" she was letting the panic get the better of her as she reached out for him, unable to tell where he was or if she was even facing in his direction.Lincoln

She kept her eyes locked on Lincoln as he sat across the table from her, sure that something was wrong but uncertain of what that might be. All the years they'd known each other, she couldn't remember him ever acting like this and she didn't like it. Her hands stroked the surface of the cup anxiously, chewing on the inside of her cheek as she awaited an explanation, sure that whatever it was, they could work it out together- it couldn't be that bad. However, when he next spoke the words that left his mouth were not at all what she'd expected. She'd expected bad news... Maybe that he'd committed murder and he needed her to help him cover his tracks or something but this... This was far from bad. "Lincoln, that's great news!" she said, unable to hide the smile that had appeared on her face at his news. All she wanted was for her friend to be happy, she'd found her own happiness and had been waiting for Lincoln to find his, apparently the wait was finally over. Reaching across the table, she clasped her hand over his and squeezed "You must introduce us! I have to meet them!" she was sure that whoever it was, they had to be pretty special to have caught Lincoln's eye, she hadn't known him to be interested in anyone before... Not like that anyway.
Costia still didn't understand why Lincoln would want to keep such news to himself, but she knew that he probably had his reasons. She was just glad that he'd trusted her enough to tell her, whoever else he chose to tell was of no concern to her. Or at least... That was her opinion before Lincoln opened his mouth again and spoke words that made her question everything she knew about him. "Skai gada?!" she asked, her voice laced with confusion and accusation... Surely she'd heard him wrong, because the Lincoln she knew would never betray their people like that. She studied his face for a moment and however much she willed it to be untrue, the way he continued to refuse to meet her gaze told her that he was telling the truth. Letting out a shaky breath, she snatched her hand away from his so suddenly it was as if she'd been burnt, as if merely touching him brought her pain. "Tell me you're joking" she muttered, her voice was barely audible but the anger behind her words was clear. Using the table to push herself to her feet, she glared down at the man only moments ago she'd called her friend, she wasn't sure that she could still call him that. Lincoln

Costia's worries only continued to grow when she saw her friend pacing, pacing was never a good sign but she'd never seen Lincoln behaving in such a manner, not without good reason. She wanted him to tell her what was on his mind, to confide in her because he wanted to and because of their long standing friendship. Then he invited her in to sit with him at the table and she found herself hesitating, uneasiness radiating through her whole body. "You're starting to scare me" she told him as she slowly walked towards the table, the whole setting was too formal, their relationship didn't require formalities, everything felt wrong. She'd never before felt this uncomfortable around Lincoln, he was her friend, possibly the best friend she had, she was comfortable around him and she'd hoped that he was comfortable around her... But right now she wasn't so sure.
Sinking into a chair, she reached for one of the cups but didn't drink from it. She watched Lincoln, trying to read his facial expression, but he wasn't giving anything away. She listened when he spoke to her, furrowing her brow as she took in what he said. "Lincoln, you can trust me" she told him, trying to keep her face neutral "anything you tell me will stay between us, you have my word" did he not trust her to keep his secrets? She didn't know whether to be hurt that he'd doubt her loyalty or pleased that he had chosen to confide in her. "You're acting weird" and this wasn't the first time, he'd been acting weird for a while and she was sure that she wasn't the only one who was starting to notice.

Costia walked towards the training area, spear in hand, it felt comfortable and at home in her grasp, like an extension of her own arm. She hadn't been keeping up with her training, not as much as she should have been and she realised that it was about time she changed that, especially with the rising tensions in Polis. People liked to pretend that it wasn't there, but it was obvious to those that knew what to look for. Costia was not yet sure if anything would come of it, but being prepared for anything was a requirement of a good warrior. As she made her way out into the training area, she immediately spotted someone that she recognised, someone that she wasn't at all surprised to see. Her cousin. She stopped, watching him as he trained with a staff, she knew of his reputation as a warrior and the way that he moved with a weapon, it was immediately apparent that he was a seasoned warrior.
After taking a moment to watch him, Costia started forward, approaching her kin confidently as she should. However as she grew near, he spun around and she froze as his staff stopped mere inches from her neck. It took her a second but the moment she recovered from her surprise, she irritably glared at him "very funny" she said, rolling her eyes at him and his blatant attempt to catch her off guard. "What would I have to be troubled about?" she asked, her brow furrowing "is life not good here? Do you see any trouble?" The clans had been quiet for a while now, it was no secret that some were whispering of the possibility of war, but there was no war yet and what would be the point of worrying about something that had not yet come to be.

Costia made her way through the forest that she called home, trying not to let her thoughts distract her. It wasn't safe to navigate the woodland whilst distracted, even before Skaikru became an issue. However, she was fighting a losing battle when she had so much to be concerned with, at the forefront of her mind was Lincoln. She'd been friends with the man since they were kids, they came from the same village and she knew what was normal for him and yet... The behaviour that he'd been displaying recently was not normal for him. He'd been disappearing for hours on end and when he returned, he'd offer some excuse that he surely felt was believable and for most it was enough, but not for her. Costia feared that there was more behind her friends absences, he'd always been intrigued by the sky people, from the moment they arrived in trikru territory, it was a curiosity that she was distrustful of. Because, whilst most of trikru, including herself were inclined to stay well away from the intruders, Lincoln seemed less fearful of them.
Now she was on her way to meet him in the cave that they both referred to as his, she knew it was where he went when he wanted to get away. He'd asked her to meet him there and that filled her with an uneasy feeling, what could he possibly have to discuss with her that required the privacy of a place that only the two of them knew of. Costia, forced herself to snap out of her daydream as she neared the caves entrance, taking a moment to look around to make sure there was no one around to watch her before slipping inside. "Lincoln?" she called out softly, unsure of whether he was already there, she moved further into the cave and then she spotted him. "What's this all about?" she questioned him, eyeing her friend suspiciously.Lincoln

When Roan told her that his mother didn’t care about him, Costia couldn’t help but feel sorry for the prince. She was there to negotiate peace and to see if they could avoid another war but she couldn’t see how that could even be possible when the queen was seemingly incapable of caring for even her son. “I’m sorry to hear that” she told him, not able to imagine how it could feel knowing that a parent didn’t love you like they should. When Roan seemed to check their surroundings, Costia found herself instinctively doing the same before focussing back on the prince when he turned back to her.“If they don’t value negotiation then they’re foolish, what good is strength and power if your people are dying in a war that could have been prevented” Costia told him, disgusted that such people even existed. Still, she listened to Roan, knowing that at least he seemed to care about avoiding another war and preserving the lives of his people. She listened as he told her about how harsh their winters were in the north and it hurt her to hear how many people lost their lives every winter just because there wasn’t enough food to feed them all. “I’ll take a message back with me and take your demands to Polis” she said “if they’re accepted and I can see no reason why they wouldn’t be, then maybe we can avoid any more unnecessary deaths”. After speaking to Roan she could see why the people of Azgeda might not want to join a coalition when nothing had really been done to prevent their people from suffering in the winter.ash

Costia watched as Roan opened the door to her cell and walked towards her, she wasn't fearful of the man despite all that his people had put her through. He'd never given her a reason to fear him and from what she'd heard so far, it didn't sound as though he knew that she was down there at all. However, if it really had been years since they'd last seen each other, a lot could have changed and she was aware of that. She might have expected the prince to greet her in any number of ways after finding her the way that he had but what she was not expecting was for him to step up to her and wrap his arms her in the first hug that she'd felt in what felt like forever. For a moment she didn't react, frozen in surprise at the action but then something in her mind clicked and she wrapped her arms around him, breathing a sigh of relief as she did so. She hadn't felt the friendly embrace of another human in such a long time, it felt strange to her, almost alien but the contact was far from unwelcome.
After he released her, some of what he said didn't make immediate sense to her, she could admit that much. He spoke about returning to his people and she wanted so much to understand what he was talking about but the truth was that thanks to his mother, she'd lost years of her life wasting away in a cell and it would take her a while to catch up on everything that had happened in her absence. "Azgeda joined the coalition?" she asked, the idea that their clans had come to an agreement was reassuring, but Roan had mentioned that their peace with Lexa was fragile. "How are things in Polis?" hearing the commander's name brought her some comfort as she'd had no way to know if she was even still alive and on the throne whilst she was in the cell. Even if the time apart had caused irreparable damage to their relationship, Costia could at least be grateful that she was still alive and that providing she was returned to her people, she would soon see her again.
It definitely sounded as though Roan intended to return her to her people, providing it wouldn't spark another war. Another war was the opposite of what Costia wanted, for her own people as well as the people of the other eleven clans "I think it's in all of our best interests if we avoid starting another war" she said, clearing her throat in an attempt to make her voice sound a little less hoarse and restore a little normalcy to the way she sounded. She was eager to be returned to her people and was more than willing to cooperate with Roan so that she could return to her own clan, she'd spent more than enough time on Azgeda land for one lifetime. "Azgeda's new king?" she questioned him, confused by his new title "things really have changed around here" she muttered, guessing that Roan's promotion was the only reason that they were talking about her release at all. "I guess before we do anything, I should thank you for releasing me" smiling, she imagined that it could have ended very differently for her. If Nia had decided it was more trouble than it was worth to keep her alive for so long, or if the new king decided that releasing her wasn't worth the risk.

Costia had no idea how long she'd been in the cell that now held her, there was no way for her to measure time down in the cell where there were no windows. She knew that she'd been down there for a long time, longer than she ever expected to be. In the beginning, when the Ice Queen first locked her down there she thought that she'd be dead within days but time stretched on and still she remained alive until eventually she realised that maybe they planned on keeping her alive. Costia had no idea why Nia kept her alive, all she knew was that there was no way for her to escape her prison and the meagre diet they kept her on made her too weak to fight even if by some miracle she managed to escape.
It wasn't often that people visited her cell, they appeared every so often to deliver her food and then disappeared again up the stairs and out of sight. Now Costia heard the hurried footsteps of somebody running down the stairs that led to her cell and she shuffled backwards, unsure of who it would be. Then a man appeared and she recognised him instantly as the prince of Azgeda, she hadn't seen him since his mother had locked her in that cell and the expression on his face told her that he had not been expecting to find her down there. "Roan?" she asked in confusion, her voice hoarse from lack of use and she struggled to her feet and took a weary step forward. He spoke her name but what interested her most were the words that followed 'All those years. I had no idea'. Years, it had been years, had she really been gone that long?

Costia knew that she’d been foolish to assume that she’d be greeted by Queen Nia herself, it had been a bold assumption and the prince had made it clear that she was not worthy of such a reception. “I’ll remember that next time I visit” she replied, although she wasn’t sure that there would be a next time and this was anything but a casual visit. She certainly wouldn’t be in a hurry to return, Azgeda and Trikru weren’t exactly close allies and if they failed to make peace and Queen Nia still refused to join the coalition, then she would have no need to return as it was likely that they would be at war once again. From what she’d heard already, peace was unlikely, especially if they failed to agree on the terms of an alliance that would benefit them both. “Ah yes, I guess your mother wouldn’t want her only son to meet an untimely end at the hands of an assassin” what would be the point in having an heir if they served no purpose. Costia had been told that the prince was not worthy of being greeted by the Queen but that didn’t mean that she did not care about his survival.
Costia listened to Roan as he spoke about how there might not be peace and about the hardships that his people faced each winter “I think the only way for our people to really thrive is for us to be united” she told him, voicing her own opinion despite knowing that it probably wasn’t a welcome one “I don’t have much of an idea of what is at stake for Azgeda… The commander is from my own clan so my people have always felt like their future was secure and that they’d be looked after under her leadership” Costia admitted, unable to completely understand the difficulties that submitting to a Trikru commander might present for the rival clan. “Achieving peace was never going to be easy, if you are not pleased with what you have been offered in past meetings, I could take a message back to the commander, inform her of any reservations you might have… Or you could send one of your own people back with me, I’m sure they’d do a much better job of voicing Azgeda’s concerns” she suggested, unsure if the prince would actually see her suggestion as a viable option, or if he'd just dismiss it.ash

When Costia heard the sound of footsteps approaching her cell, she tried to shuffle back into the shadows, knowing that anyone who entered would see her anyway but wishing that they wouldn’t. It seemed too soon for them to be taking her from the cell again, maybe Nia had finally realised that she didn’t know anything and had decided to move up her execution. Costia had always known that this would end in her death, Nia would not simply hand her back over to the commander, she wanted to be weaken Lexa, to hurt her and she now had a way to do that. It was hard to want to live when all she had to look forward to every day was more torture and every day she woke up disappointed to find that she was still breathing. She prayed that each day would be her last so that the pain would finally end and it seemed like that day had finally arrived.
She could hear noise on the other side of the door, it was louder and didn’t sound as though somebody was unlocking the door. Costia figured that maybe they were trying to get it unlocked, maybe it was stiff, the cold temperatures sometimes made it difficult for them to get the door open. It didn’t bother her, it only prolonged the inevitable, it didn’t change anything other than the amount of time she had left to spend alive. Eventually whoever it was trying to get inside the cell, managed to get the door open and Costia shrank away from the light that was let in through the open door. She saw an Azgeda warrior walk into her cell, there were usually more of them, at least two, she wanted to laugh, Nia obviously thought that she was now too weak to put up much of a fight. That assumption was right, Costia hadn’t even tried to stand since she’d last been brought back to the cell, she didn’t know if she could and didn’t see any point in attempting it. Even if by some miracle she managed to get out of her cell, she wouldn’t be strong enough to run or to fight her way out, she’d given up hope of ever getting out alive.
The warrior that was now standing in her cell seemed to look at her but made no attempt to drag her to her feet or abuse her in any way like the majority of others did when they came to collect her. She at least hoped that if they made to grab at her, that she would have to strength to get one good punch in, if she were to die, she didn’t want to go easily and they were foolish if they thought that she wouldn’t at least try to fight back. Her strength was faded and yes… She was broken, but she was a warrior and warriors went out fighting. Derrick
