Aurora sat at home. She had just changed into something comfortable, which she needed at the moment. The day had been hard. There had been rumor for what was coming up, but she still hadn’t felt prepared for it. Part of her knew she was never meant to win. And it wasn’t about winning for her. It was about not giving up. They new cadets were paired off with fully trained guards, meaning to teach them a lesson that their journey was far from over. Aurora was a stubborn one though. She wouldn’t stay down like a lot of the others. For her losing wasn’t the problem, she didn’t want to give up. That was her problem. She didn’t stay down. Aurora took punch after kick after punch, landed on the mat and got back up until finally her arms shook violently when trying to get up once more. It was a look around that made her finally tap the mat three times, signaling she was giving up.
After that the dark haired woman got to return home to rest. The first thing she did was to wash up and change. Peeling off her trainings uniform alone was painful enough with bruises and scratches blossoming. Finally she was changed into a lose shirt and pants. Despite knowing Marcus Kane would come over later – he had announced himself – she didn’t bother putting on anything fancy. They got along nicely outside of their jobs and he had seen her in worse states than this due to training. Just as she was thinking this and reaching for a wet cloth to wrap around her sure ankle, she heard a knock on the door. The cadet made her way to opening it, finding Kane there, offering a cooling pack. Aurora sighed deeply.
“You’re the best.” She said accepting the cooling pack. For a moment she was a bit overwhelmed where should she put it? Probably on her foot. It was just twisted a bit, nothing that resting it for a bit couldn’t fix, but it was annoying and painful. And as such she was slightly favoring her left leg as she walked back inside. “I was just about to take a look at how colorful I’m about to become.” She suspected a few bruises already and more scratches due to landing on the mat. She knew she was not badly injured at all, their opponents were trained to not hurt them, but the bruises and scratches would leave enough lingering pain. “I bet you can call me ABC tomorrow: Aurora Blake Cow with those bruises.”

It was kind of him to want to make sure everything was okay. She knew others in his position didn’t care, they even liked it, as far as she could tell. It weeded cadets out for them, probably spared them work. Aurora was nowhere near being able to judge this, so she didn’t. However she liked his approach a little more. That way the cadets that would make it through the program were actually chosen by talent and not by how badly they were bullied by others and they could be vicious idiots.
“What silence?” Aurora asked rhetorically at him while pointing over his shoulder towards the other cadets, who were as loud as they could be, as usual, but also, as it seemed, about to get done with it. She had no idea why they seemed in a rush today, though. She was done for today and therefore take her time, especially now that Supervising Officer Kane offered his company. He probably did it with all of them. She couldn’t imagine him singling one out as he was always very fair. “Sounds good. Though you’re definitely in the advantage already.” She smirked at him. He was probably very aware of that one. “You have access to my file and … there is a lot about me in that one.” Every hard fact that there could be was in it, though those were only parts of who she was, dates and numbers on a sheet, that belonged to her but didn’t speak for her. “You’Re pretty young compared to the other supervising officers.” She pointed out – a fact that he probably knew very well himself. “Are you that good? I mean… I’m probably totally putting my foot in my mouth here, but you must have done something to earn this position earlier than all the others.”

At first she couldn’t tell what woke her. But then she heard the soft protesting sounds of an annoyed infant. For a moment she was confused. It was new, but wonderful. That was her baby, her son, gently protesting, probably getting ready to cry. Aurora got up slowly. She took her time to get to Bellamys bed, picking her son up, before turning around to find her husband cleaning. How on earth did she deserve that. Pressing the baby to her chest, she carried him over to where Marcus worked. He didn’t have to, as far as Aurora was concerned. He was working. He would work while she got to stay home with the baby. He didn’t need to work at home, but she was grateful as well. Bellamy was not even a day old, she still felt exhausted, but more than that did she feel happiness over how considerate and wonderful Marcus was.
“Look at that, Bellamy.” She cooed to the baby. “Your Dad is cleaning. I think he also cooked while we were asleep.” She said it for Marcus as well, of course, knowing fully well he’d obviously hear it. “He’s pretty great your Dad.” Aurora kept her hand on Bellamy as he fuzzed more and more against her. “I think he wants food first.” But she had to do something first. Bellamy wouldn’t starve while she leaned forward to kiss Marcus gently. “Thank you, Marcus. For letting me sleep and doing this. You are by far the best husband I could have asked for aaaand the best, Daddy, right, Bellamy?” Bellamy wasn’t responding to it at all. Instead he finally started to cry. “Got it, baby boy.” Aurora cooed. “I’ll feed and change him and then we can eat, is that okay, Marcus?”

Aurora was still lost in thought, when someone sat down across from her. She didn’t intend to make much of a fuzz about it. It happened. People needed to sit together, knowing the other or not. As she looked up, though, just taking her fork, she found her supervising officer Kane sitting right across her, asking her a question about why she sat alone. He cared about his students. That was something she had not expected given the stories she heard, but it was a falsehood she liked to have corrected. She smiled at him, openly and warmly, hoping to make him see how grateful she was for asking, not that there was a problem.
“I was the last to get here. Took a bit longer to change this time. I usually sit with the others.” She really did. It was just the fact that there was not enough room for them all to sit together. “The last one to come sits alone.” And as such this time it was Aurora. For some reason, though, she thought she could crack a silly joke around him. “Besides, have you smelled them?” She had gotten used to their smell a bit, but others hadn’t. She hadn’t minded either. It was part of what she had to deal with in the training. “I don’t remember you eating with us before.” Or maybe she had just not seen him before and was now officially making a fool out of herself by trying to make small talk and failing at it.

Neither had she held something as precious in her arms, really. She already thought she could not love someone more than she loved Marcus, but she was wrong, the love for this little life they created was so much more. She felt it was only right, that Bellamy had immediately taken up so much room in their hearts. She was glad that Marcus felt this way. Aurora had a lot of time to bond with the idea of being a mother as she carried him, felt him move, but Marcus didn’t have those opportunities. To see him and Bellamy like this was a real blessing.
“He really is perfect.” Aurora agreed. She had never seen a more perfect baby. Or a more perfect father. It was like he never did anything else, even though it was his first child – and only, since a couple could only have one child. But Bellamy was perfect. Aurora reached towards the baby again, gently stroking his little hand. “And you got everything under control.” Aurora closed her eyes. She knew the babies cries would wake her if she fell asleep, but this position and situation was just perfect. She felt relaxed, warm, safe. In those moments pain was forgotten. She was happy and comfortable with her little family, so not long after she closed her eyes, she was asleep snuggled into Marcus side while their son lay on his chest, asleep as well.

Aurora didn’t think of it as anything but her instructor showing her a move, when he touched her. She guessed in some cases that was just easier than having to talk them through moves and she wasn’t against it, nor did she consider it in any for inappropriate. It might have been a very tricky situation if someone really got funny ideas, but she tried not to think of that possibility, feeling like it might hold her back and that, in turn, was bad for her. Aurora paid close attention to the moves he was showing her, but as he did that, she couldn’t help but notice, that unlike some other guards, Kane was rather attractive and her supervising officer, so she should get those thoughts right out of her head. Well maybe recognizing that was not as bad, acting on it was. Drawing in a deep breath just as he pressed against her rib, was not planned at all, but it made her just wonder if maybe she should be a little more careful around him. She was just a young woman after all.
“Thank you, Sir.” Aurora looked up into his eyes as she said this, not even paying attention to how close he was. She turned around, wanting to head for a training back to practice the moves he had just shown her, but she didn’t get too far. The bell went off, announcing that it was another groups turn to train now. She assumed it was fully trained guards now. Like the others, she made her way to the changing rooms, the womens rooms being a lot more empty than those of the men. As it was late, Aurora, like some of the other cadets, made her way to the canteen. They had the little routine set up for the cadets to eat together after those training hours. For team building. Today she sat alone, though, for the simple lack of room on other tables and the fact that she had taken a little longer at changing – some of the men she trained with were just pigs, but she’d never say that out loud. Instead she stared at her food, never even seeing it as she focused on the what she learned today and that was not just related to the cadet training.

Aurora turned to the food, to let her two men discuss what they needed to discuss. They had made more than enough for all of them after all, it would last all of them for either the night or even the next day, if they kept an eye on what they were eating. All of them, knew how to deal with shortages in food and it usually was resembled in the way they treated their food. When Bellamy was younger, they didn’t adjust his rations, naturally as he needed the food to grow, but they adjusted their own.
“Well in any case, I can imagine all of you need a good meal after a busy day.” All of them had worked hard in their own line of work after all, one way or another they all deserved a good meal and to have someone care for them. “We have made quite a lot, I think.” Well she didn’t just think so, she saw it. “So, if you want, Bell, you can take some with you for later or tomorrow. It will last us for quite a while, all of us.” Vera would take some anyway, but given how they raised Bell, he did need the invitation to take some with him. “I can get a few more spices for you. It might have not absorbed them properly, you know how it is.”

Aurora didn’t believe that, not only for the placement of the tears, but also because of her voice. The nervousness gave it away in many ways. Of course Aurora was a stranger to this girl, she had not yet managed to build trust towards her, probably didn’t even know that Aurora had once trained to really become a guard once herself. That was all in the past now, though. The future held different promises for her, like being a mother, death, maybe even a grandchild, hatred in many ways. It was not her place to comment on that any further on what she was saying. It was her decision, but Aurora couldn’t expect immediate trust, nor did she want it, she could not offer it at all either. She had her own secrets to keep.
“Good.” With the rules about that not changed, there would be no problem with fixing it and if there was no problem for Aurora to fix it, there should be no problem for the girl to live through the scrutineering of the uniform. All would be well and the material would hold as tightly as it was supposed to hold, if not tighter, because Aurora was thorough with her work. “If you want, you can stay, have a drink or something. You can also leave. I’m guessing it will take me three to five hours, depending on what’s going on today. It would be best if you called in before, so I can make sure you get what you need. You don’t need it in the next two hours, right?”

“Yes, sir.” She answered. Aurora was quite aware of what the job entailed and she wanted to get good at it, though at this time she was still learning and would openly admit to it. It was no weakness in her eyes to not be perfect, giving up, giving in to fear was weakness. She would learn and accept criticism, though maybe in cases of other officers a bit grumbling. There was no need for that with Kane. His criticism held substance instead of just being blank statements holding no room for questions of how to improve. He offered that, which Aurora appreciated, a lot. So his advice was to work on speed, which she could understand. It was just, sadly, the natural way things were and in many ways how the men around here thought.
Aurora stood calmly next to him, the thought of attacking him out of the blue didn’t even cross her mind. She was there to learn, attacking someone just to prove something was certainly not the way she was going to achieve that. And what he said proved it. He gave examples on where to hit to get the most effective area. Had she attacked him, she would not be able to ask him a question about it, as she would have had to put her entire energy into the attack and in the consequence of it, into deflecting his reaction to it.
“The neck and adam’s apple mean there are two different sensitive areas? What’s the difference between those moves, I mean where would I have to aim for in both cases?” So far she had learned of one sensitive area on the neck, she had gone for it in some sparring sessions already, usually with a well aimed kick, proving successful, but she wanted to know the other area as well. She would need to know that eventually in her work, because she really wanted to get into the guard and she was willing to go quite far for that chance, of course not beyond what was morally acceptable.

“That’s very sweet.” She had always seen Marcus mother as sweet. Maybe it came with her caring for the spirituality of basically everyone here on the Ark. In any case Aurora was just glad that this apparently went as smoothly as possible and she would return. Given how close Aurora was with her own grandmother, she was hoping Bellamy would get to enjoy the benefits of having a grandmother. In any case he would have two very loving parents, because she knew both Marcus and her would do everything in their power to make this little guys life the best life ever. He was already so loved. She knew she would love this little life for the rest of hers, give him everything she had.
Aurora held onto him just a little closer than. “You did a lot of the work, Marcus.” She whispered. There was no need to speak any louder. Bellamy was resting peacefully, they were close enough for whispers to be enough, no need to risk waking the baby. “I wouldn’t underestimate the power of moral support and someone holding someones hand, especially not during childbirth. I think none of this would have gone as smoothly without you there.” He was a strong man, mentally, physically, everyone could see it. His strength helped her a lot and she guessed it helped Bellamy right now as he got to snuggle with his Dad. “And right now you are doing a lot of work. Bonding and helping him develop at the same time as well as keeping him warm AND cuddling.”

Aurora reached for her water, taking a sip to soothe the burning throat just a little, she had heard Officer Kane order Shumway to spar against her. For a moment Aurora closed her eyes. She had avoided Shumway. For some reasons she couldn’t name she didn’t trust the man. He always made her shiver, gave her a weird vibe and made her uncomfortable. She didn’t expect him to ever attack her, but his attitude and personality were not one she wanted to be around of. But this was just sparring, not a date. It would be fine. She just needed to figure out his weakness.
The two of them went straight into it. Aurora mainly dodged him, avoiding his punches and kicks as gracefully as possible, but one belly flop was simply not avoidable. Kicking out she got back up, still watching him and not allowing for him to get her. He gloated. Eventually he might have thought her avoiding him meant he had the upper hand. He didn’t realize that she was watching, studying his movements and waiting for the opening, which came the moment he got careless enough to openly announce his superiority over her. He was good at fighting, Aurora knew that. He had the strength to take down people with a lot more ease than she had. She had to rely a bit more on her wits. Rora delivered a kick to Shumways shoulder, catching him off guard. Using his confusion Aurora kicked his legs out underneath him and secured him in a hold that would cause him pain if he would try to move out of it.
After a few moments Aurora got up, releasing him. She turned to look at officer Kane, awaiting his review of what they had just done. Both her and Shumway were still in training, Aurora decided to develop her strengths rather than linger on her weaknesses even though she was working on them, too. But at the end of the day she was not the one to decide if what she was doing was good, so she spoke up. “Do you have any tips, maybe, Officer Kane?” After all they were both still learning and so any tip or criticism would eventually make both Shumway and her better.

Ah the uniform. Aurora learned early on when she was in the cadet program herself why the uniform needed to be in tip top shape. It was to protect the guards from attacks, to give them authority by giving them this shape that would tell everyone this person ahead was a guard just by the silhouette. Between her own time as cadet and now she had repaired Bellamys once or twice. She remembered the hard times again, before she was in active cadet work. It felt so far behind her now that her son was all grown up and ready to be a guard herself. She was so very proud of him.
While Aurora turned the uniform over in her hand to inspect it she heard the girls explanation. The dark haired mother sighed. She knew instances in which women got hurt in the guard, due to how men thought things would happen and should happen in their lives. She was glad Bellamy was not one of those. She had raised him right, she thought, but she was sure Octavia played an even greater part in that than she did. “Are you sure they were sheets of metal or very alive sheets of metal thinking they were better than women? At least at my time those sheets of metal were more likely to be the cause of those marks.” She wouldn’t fault her or poke her any further, she guessed, but right now there was something more important to deal with: The uniform.
“Yes. I will have to insert a bit of fabric for this one, but that should be no problem at all. Unless they have changed the rules about that. Have they?”

@callie
It was all going to hell. Her family was small, but they worked. Bellamy had everything he needed or at least the most necessary things. She and her friends put points together to give him a few extras, to make sure he was a happy kid, but the most important part for Aurora was that she could feed and clothe him and protect him. It was good, easy. Bellamy was a great kid, but now everything was going to hell. She hadn’t planned this. She hadn’t planned to get pregnant again and she had been careful, but malfunctions in the contraception were not unheard of, which was why the council allowed for a certain time to deal with a second pregnancy without punishment. That dealing included abortion of the baby and there was no way Aurora was even considering, just like she never considered it with Bellamy.
It was that why she asked for her friend Callie to come all the way down to factory station where Aurora lived. She had to talk to someone and if she could trust anyone, it was Callie. Callie would keep her secret and even if Aurora was caught, she would have enough sense to claim she never had any idea. Someone had to take care of Bellamy and in case of Auroras death that would be Callie. And for that to work efficiently she needed all the information she could have. Aurora had placed Bellamy with her friend for the day so the two of them could speak in peace. Finally she heard her friend outside and opened the door just enough so Callie could come in, but no one could see inside.

“I’m good.” Aurora whispered, getting comfortable in his embrace. He had his little family in his arms, secure and safe. The baby was warm, she was warm, both were safe. Right then, with her flowing over of hormones, she felt like right then and there nothing could ever harm any of them when they were together like that. She placed her hand on Marcus’ chest, finger barely touching their newborn sons arm, enjoying how warm and alive he was. They did good with him, if she could say so herself. They made a very cute baby and he was whole and as healthy as it got. “I don’t think either of us needs anything right now, Marcus. He gets to cuddle and bond with his Daddy, I get to cuddle with you, I think we’re both very happy.” The pain didn’t matter. The female body was a funny thing anyway. She didn’t need painkillers, her body would supply natural painkillers soon enough.
“Did you already call your mother?” Aurora assumed Vera was dying to know if she was a grandmother now or not. With how enthusiastic she spoke about the baby when Aurora was still pregnant, she was surprised she wasn’t here yet, then again it would also be very Vera to decide to give them space after the birth. She didn’t know if Vera knew that Marcus had been there with her the entire time, but if someone could have predicted and expected it, it would have been Vera. She raised him after all. In the end she was in no rush to get Vera here. She wanted those moments with them, they were so very precious. “Thank you, Marcus.”
