Sinclair nodded at the Chancellor's words, they knew that others had made it down to earth and because of that he'd decided that he had to believe that his wife was alive, until he received confirmation of her death then he'd continue to believe that she was out there somewhere. Hope was what kept a lot of people going and right now he was needed, he couldn't afford to grieve for someone who might not even be lost. He looked down when he felt Kane's hand on his shoulder "a chance" he repeated, forcing a smile to show that he understood. It was better than nothing, it was more than a lot of people had these days and Sinclair knew that the kids were more important, they at least knew that some of the kids that had been sent down were still alive, they just had to find them.
What Kane said next grabbed Jacapo's attention "Raven's alive?" that was good news, it was great news. He was relieved to hear that she was alive when others weren't, he was concerned to hear that she'd been injured but at least she was alive. "How bad are her injuries?" he didn't know if the Chancellor would know all that much, but as he'd been one of the ones to go to the dropship then he figured he'd at least know more than he did. Raven was a talented mechanic and he knew that they could definitely use her when she recovered from her injuries, how long that took depended upon how serious her injuries actually were.

"You've been in pain before Jasper" Jacapo corrected him "you've always been human" the boy was grieving and it was obvious that he'd never felt this type of pain before, if he had then maybe he'd be able to deal with it better, he'd know what to expect. "When you lose somebody you love, it hurts and nobody expects you to just be fine and move on, but we also don't want you to think that drinking will solve all of your problems" he doubted that his words would get through to Jasper, he'd tried talking to him, he'd taken away the alcohol that he used to get wasted, there wasn't much else he could do if Jasper wouldn't allow him to help.
When Jasper revealed that he'd almost taken the key, Sinclair felt concerned. They didn't know what it was and Jaha was giving it out to people, vulnerable people it seemed if he was offering it to people like Raven and Jasper. He was glad that Abby had stopped Jasper from making the same decision that Raven had, even if that meant that he still had to live with his pain "Doctor Griffin was right to do that, you don't know what is in this... 'key' or if it's safe" he didn't consider it safe to consume anything unless you were a hundred percent sure what it contained and they couldn't be sure what was in the key and therefore he didn't view it as something that should be consumed by a human.

Sinclair was grateful to Bellamy when the younger male tried to reassure him, he doubted that his guilt could be erased so easily but it did help to ease his mind a little. He had been there for Raven, but somehow it hadn't been enough. "I wasn't there for her when she took the chip, none of us were" he sighed, there were a lot of 'what if's' going through his mind at that moment, but he had to let go of thinking about what he could've done differently and focus on what he could do to help Raven now, his job was to finish the device so that they could get ALIE out of her head and get Raven back. He'd almost finished the device and it would be completed by the time Monty and Octavia returned, they just had to hope that everything went according to plan.
"When we get ALIE out of her she'll need all of us" Sinclair corrected Bellamy without really thinking about it, Raven would need the support of all of her friends, not just him. Jacapo knew that Raven had a habit of pushing people away but it was time for them to refuse to be pushed away, they needed to be there for her, it didn't matter how much she tried to push them away, she still needed them. "We just have to hope that the plan works" it had to work, failure was not an option, if they failed then... Sinclair didn't want to think about what failure meant, the plan would work, Raven would be fine, she had to be fine.
He watched Bellamy with interest as he spoke, it didn't seem as if he was being honest about how he felt, nobody could just be fine after everything that Bellamy had been through, no human could at least. "Raven told people that she was fine too" but she wasn't, that was obvious now that she was tied to a bed with her wrists bandaged after taking something that promised to take away her pain. "You know, we have some time to kill and I've been told that I'm a good listener" he had to finish the device but they had some time before Monty and Octavia returned with what they needed. This was the slowest things had been recently, before this it had just been a rush of activity and Sinclair didn't know when they'd next get the opportunity to talk properly. He might not be Bellamy's favourite person in the world but at least he was willing to listen, if just for a moment. He couldn't force Bellamy to talk about his problems and he doubted that he could persuade him to open up about them but there was no harm in trying. Bellamy Blake

Sinclair wasn't sure if Jasper was working to divert the conversation away from himself and onto something else by mentioning Raven and the key, but what he'd said definitely interested Sinclair. He seemed pretty convinced that Raven's pain had simply disappeared, but pain didn't just disappear. It sounded a bit odd to Sinclair and he didn't trust it "You weren't thinking of taking this... Key? Were you?" he asked Jasper warily. Jasper was definitely in a dark place and he wouldn't rule out the possibility of him taking whatever Jaha was offering if it took away his pain, after all Raven had taken it and Sinclair hadn't thought she'd do something like that.
If the key worked then Sinclair could think of more than a few people who'd be willing to take it if it promised to take away their pain. Many people had lost loved ones and been injured since arriving on earth, the promise of something that took away all forms of pain was definitely something that would be accepted by a lot of people in Arkadia. But it couldn't be that simple, when things sounded too good to be true, then they usually were. "Pain is what makes you human, Jasper" he muttered, he didn't know if it was entirely healthy to cover up their pain completely. If they couldn't feel pain then they'd have people sticking their hands into fires and things like that, they wouldn't be able to feel it but it would still be damaging to their bodies.

Sinclair listened to Jasper as he seemed to fall apart in front of him, the quiver in his voice indicated that he was on the verge of tears and yet none fell. "There's nothing wrong in you Jasper... You're grieving, everything you're feeling is completely natural" everyone was affected differently when they lost someone they cared about, Jasper wasn't dealing with his grief in the best way possible, but drinking was his way of coping with the pain he was feeling. "I know what you're going through, you loved Maya and now she's gone" he watched Jasper as he hit himself in the side of the head but made no attempt to stop him, he didn't want to overstep and invade Jasper's personal space. "I know it might not seem like it now, but it does get better..." nobody ever thought it could get better, but of course it did, eventually Jasper would see that.
When Jasper explained about Raven, Sinclair was instantly confused. He'd heard rumours about Jaha offering the residents of Arkadia something that would take away their pain. He hadn't thought much of it, in fact he'd thought it was some kind of hoax. Nothing could take away all of your pain, at least he didn't believe that it could. "Raven took a key?" he questioned Jasper, it didn't sound good whatever it was and Jasper was talking as if it actually worked. "You know, only time will take away your pain Jasper... Nothing else will take it away" he didn't understand what was going on with Raven, did he believe that her pain had disappeared just through taking something Jaha had given her? Absolutely not. Did he want Jasper to believe that his pain could simply be erased like that? No, to give him false hope would be cruel.

Everything had happened so quickly, one moment he'd been in the hanger bay with Raven and the next they had news that Emerson was in Arkadia somewhere. He'd followed instructions to lock the doors but it turned out that Emerson was already in there with them. The lights cut out and they were plunged into darkness, Sinclair couldn't see anything and he knew that their only chance was to open the outer doors. However, Emerson had tried to prevent him from opening the doors, he'd told Raven to get in the rover, if she was in the rover then at least she'd be safe until backup came in the form of Clarke and Bellamy. He could barely see the mountain man in the darkness but Emerson could obviously see him, Sinclair had managed to get one good hit at him but it didn't do much to scare the man away. He came at him again whilst he was opening the doors and this time he felt a flare of pain in his abdomen, forcing him to cry out.
The outer doors were open, he'd done his job and as he brought his hand to his stomach he felt the familiar stickiness of blood beneath his hand. Looking down at the wound he saw the steadily expanding patch of red on his shirt and knew that the wound was serious. Even as the thought entered his mind he gave a hacking cough and the taste of blood filled his mouth and spilled over to coat his lips and his legs gave way beneath him, suddenly incapable of holding his weight. As he lay on his side he saw Raven climb out of the Rover and begin hurrying towards him, going as fast as she could with just one good leg "No... No! Stay in the rover" there was a desperation in his voice as he stared at her wide-eyed, inside the rover she was safe. Inside the rover no harm could come to her and she'd be safe to wait for Bellamy and Clarke to arrive.
He felt the desperation to say something, anything that would persuade her go back to the vehicle and so he kept muttering the words "It's okay" repeatedly, trying to reassure her that everything would be fine. "Please go back in the rover" he begged her, his voice coming out as a whimper that seemed to be getting weaker as time passed by. She was the only one left in the world that he truly cared about, he wasn't going to lose her now, he wasn't going to be the reason that she died. Despite his protests, Raven refused to leave his side and it was infuriating, she always had to be the stubborn one. He felt her grab hold of him and suddenly he was moving, being pulled across the floor by the girl and he couldn't hold back the painful sounds that escaped him, as every time he was moved a jolt of pain shot through his body. His stomach felt as though it was on fire and nothing would stop the pain, his head began to swim and his eyes began to roll, the edges of his vision blurring as he tried desperately to keep his eyes open.
Her voice sounded so far away and he couldn't tell if she was by his side or if she was on the other side of the room, he couldn't even really make out what she was saying, but he could hear her and that meant that she was still with him. Emerson hadn't got her... Yet. He let out a cry of pain as the pain in his stomach flared up suddenly and his eyes flew open and Raven's face swam back into focus. He could hear her voice clearly again despite the roaring in his ears, she was staring at him and he could see the fear etched onto her face, he could see the tears that had left tracks on her face and he hated that this time he was the cause of her pain, she'd been through so much, experienced so much pain and this time he was the one hurting her. He instantly noticed her look away from him and from his position on the ground he couldn't see what she was looking at but he recognised the look in her eyes. He reached for her and his hand blindly found hers, where she was using it to keep pressure on his wound and he squeezed it harder than was probably necessary. Whatever had caught her attention, they needed it, that much he could see in the expression on her face but he wasn't going to allow her to risk her life for him.
A cough shook the mans body and the fresh taste of blood touched his tongue, he hadn't imagined that he'd die like this. But if he was honest then there was no one else he'd rather have at his side in his final moments, but even so the thought of her staying by his side when doing so could cost her, her life repulsed him. "Leave me" the words came out barely more than a whisper, but he knew that she'd heard him as he gave her hand another firm squeeze. He'd lived what he'd like to think was a full life, there was nobody else left that cared about him apart from Raven and he knew that she'd be okay. She had her friends, they'd take care of her. "I'd rather die alone knowing that you're safe than die with you at my side knowing that I'd endangered your life" he told her, trying to pry her hands away from his stomach as he spoke "Just go... Be safe" cherry1

Sinclair had travelled to Go-Sci that morning to carry out some maintenance work, the station was important and so there always seemed to be an engineer around doing some maintenance and making sure that everything still ran smoothly. Of course, his job was to make sure all parts of the station were running smoothly without problem, that included the radio. He hadn't anticipated having an audience while he worked on updating the equipment, but it seemed as though the young woman that was observing him now had other plans.
"I'm a very busy man" Sinclair made the excuse when she suggested that it would be fun if he could come in during the show. He didn't necessarily like it when people watched him work but he didn't dislike it unless the person in question was making it their mission to distract him, if anything he was glad of the company. "I'm the chief engineer, I guess if you need some equipment looked at then I'm your man" he confirmed, looking up from his work to watch her for a second. She seemed to be quite talkative and interested in the work that he was doing and he didn't see any harm in acknowledging her questions "I'm just doing a bit of maintenance, nothing major... Just updating some of the equipment" of course Sinclair could name a rather long list of engineers that ranked lower than him that could easily complete these updates instead of him but he was happy to keep busy anyway.
"I'm sorry... I didn't quite catch your name" he apologised to the woman, prompting her to introduce herself. He assumed she worked on the station somewhere, he didn't know everyone that inhabited the ark and this woman was one of the people that he'd never had the pleasure of meeting, or displeasure... That completely depended on what sort of person she was.

The sarcasm was easily detectable in Jasper's voice and Sinclair knew that he should've expected it, Jasper wasn't going to make this conversation easy. "You're sitting here with me, but where are your friends? I know you wouldn't be sitting here with me if you had someone else to talk to" but the truth of the matter was that he didn't have anyone else to talk to, he'd decided to turn to drinking instead of allowing his friends to help him get through whatever battle he was facing in his head. It wasn't the smartest of decisions, but Sinclair knew that sometimes it was better to feel numb than to face all of the pain in your life.
"I don't think they hate you Jasper..." Sinclair told him, he knew that Jasper used to have a lot of friends, after everything that they'd been through together, he found it hard to believe that they could switch off their feelings and switch to hating Jasper. "I think they're just angry and maybe they're confused, they've been with you through all of this, they've seen the things that you've seen and experienced most of the things that you've experienced and none of them are falling apart or turning to alcohol to get through each day" everyone dealt with grief differently, that was a fact, but Sinclair didn't expect a group of traumatised kids to realise that or to understand.
Sinclair didn't know if he was irritating Jasper, he'd been able to talk to Raven about her problems but he knew Raven a hell of a lot better than he knew Jasper. "I don't know if you are interested in what I have to say, but I really want to help you and you can't push me away, I don't scare easy" he smiled at Jasper again and he hoped that what he was saying was getting through to the boy. "Raven has her own problems that she's dealing with, you know that... I don't think she's purposefully avoiding you" truthfully Sinclair hadn't sat down and spoken to Raven properly in a while, he'd been wrapped up in what had been going on with Pike, but he hadn't noticed anything weird going on with the girl, or maybe that was just him being unobservant.

Sinclair was fairly confident that they'd be able to repair most of the damage that had been done to the ark, he had some pretty capable people on his team and failure wasn't an option. They already knew that the grounders were hostile, without power they would be more vulnerable to attack. It was true that Sinclair didn't have a massive team, it was nothing compared to what he had back on the ark but they had to make it work, they didn't have any other option. He was just thankful that he wasn't the only engineer that had made it down to Earth, he had Wick and Raven was there, even if she was incapable of helping at that moment due to her injuries, it was reassuring to know that when she got back on her feet, however long that would be, they'd have a talented young mechanic on hand.
"Thank you sir" he muttered as he looked around the room, help would definitely be appreciated. They might not have anybody else that was capable of restoring power to the camp but having a couple of extra people on hand to help clean up the mess that the crash had made, might make all the difference "If anything changes I'll send someone to let you know immediately" he was sure that Kane would want to stay updated if anything important changed, it would be important to keep the chancellor updated. If something went wrong then Sinclair had no doubt in his mind that Kane would want to know, currently he was crossing his fingers that everything went according to plan, they couldn't afford to make mistakes. Not down here.
When Kane mentioned the other stations, Sinclair felt a familiar pang in his chest. His wife had been travelling down on one of the other stations and Sinclair still didn't know if she was alive. He didn't know why he hadn't insisted upon her travelling down with him, if he had then she'd be safe now. There was still hope, there was always a chance that the station that she'd been travelling in had made it, but only five percent of the arks stations had made it down to earth. His gaze went to the chancellor's hand as he placed it reassuringly on his shoulder before allowing it to drop once again to his side "Thank you sir... I appreciate it" he muttered his thanks quickly, he had to keep busy. As long as there was work to be done, he wouldn't be able to focus on the dark thoughts that had started to invade his mind. "Others made it, we can't be all there is... Right?" he asked, not really expecting an answer, maybe he'd said it to reassure himself more than anything. The idea that they'd been the only ones to make it was almost unbearable to think about.

Sinclair was surprised when Jasper spoke to him again, he wasn't blind but he had been drunk for the majority of the time and Sinclair hadn't expected him to notice what had been going on around Arkadia in recent days. He started to pick at the fabric of his shirt when Jasper mentioned Bellamy and Monty, Jasper was obviously still haunted by what happened in the mountain, by what his friends did. "Your not doing yourself any favours by pushing everyone away Jasper" he was aware that what happened at Mount Weather was horrible, innocent people including young children died but he also didn't think Jasper should necessarily blame his friends when it was possible that they would all be dead now if they hadn't pulled the lever to irradiate the mountain.
"Nobody is putting a gun in your hand for your own safety" Sinclair knew that handing a gun to a mentally unstable kid would just be asking for trouble, there was no telling what would happen, if he'd hurt people, if he'd hurt himself. "They don't want you to get hurt and they don't want other people to get hurt, I know you understand that" he didn't want to talk to Jasper as though he was a child who didn't understand things, he knew that Jasper understood why they were treating him the way that they were.
A moment later Sinclair noticed the look of panic on Jasper's face and for a few seconds he didn't know what caused the boys panic until he realised that it must've been because of what he'd said about Pike. "You don't have to worry about me reporting you Jasper" he reassured the teenager and he meant it. He wasn't one of Pike's supporters, from the moment they'd got to the ground he'd been loyal to Marcus Kane. Pike seemed to be making decisions that were ggoing to lead them into a war against the grounders and that was something Sinclair didn't want. They'd already lost too many people and although the grounders had never done them any favours, it looked as though they'd lose less people if they made peace than they would if they entered into a war that they couldn't possibly win.

Sinclair heaved a heavy sigh, he obviously wasn't getting anywhere with Jasper and it was frustrating how reluctant the boy was to accept help. "You are not beyond saving Jasper, you just have to want to get better, but you have to want it" he told him, watching as Jasper began to rock backwards and forwards. Sinclair wasn't a doctor but it was obvious that Jasper wasn't a healthy kid, but there wasn't much he could do if Jasper wouldn't let him help him.
Forcing a smile, Sinclair shook his head at Jaspers words. If it was possible he would rewire his brain, if that was what it took to help him and turn him back into the kid that his friends described him as then sure. "If only it were that simple" he sighed, shooting Jasper a sympathetic look that he probably didn't really want to see. "Have you thought about talking to your friends about how your feeling? The support of a friend can sometimes go a long way to helping you feel better" he hadn't seen Jasper interacting with his friends recently and he thought that maybe he would prefer to talk to a friend rather than a guy that he barely knew.

Jasper's hostility came as no surprise to Sinclair, but it didn't make the man any less willing to sit down and try to talk to the boy. In his eyes Jasper was just a messed up kid and talking about his problems to somebody who was actually willing to listen might be good for him. "Is it too hard to believe that I actually do care, Jasper?" he questioned the teenager with a frown. He knew that he wouldn't be able to help him if he didn't want his help and he hoped that Jasper would see that he meant well and was genuinely concerned about him.
There was some truth in Jasper's words, Sinclair didn't know him. He just knew what people had told him. "That's true... I don't know you, but that doesn't mean I don't want to help you" since returning from Mount Weather, Sinclair had also noticed a change in Monty's behaviour and he knew that Jasper and Monty had once been friends. He didn't know why they were no longer speaking but he wondered if that was one of the reasons why Jasper had decided to drink himself to death.

He heard the sound of someone start on top of the rover before Jasper peered over the edge and looked down at him and Sinclair couldn't help but notice that he didn't look pleased to see him. He rolled his eyes as Jasper asked him if he had any alcohol "you know I don't" he muttered as he climbed inside the rover and made his way up to sit on the roof beside Jasper. "I'm probably not your favourite person in the world right now" alcoholics didn't appreciate it when somebody cut them off from their supply and Jasper was an alcoholic. He was extremely young to be abusing alcohol but he was and Sinclair wanted to find out why.
"Why are you doing this to yourself Jasper?" he questioned him cautiously, aware that he probably didn't want anyone prying into his business. However, it was the responsibility of the adults in Arkadia to look out for the kids, especially those that didn't have parents and that was a high number of them now and surprisingly few adults seemed to care about Jasper's behaviour, nobody had tried to prevent him from drinking or if they had then they weren't doing a great job of it.

Sinclair had been gathering together the alcohol at the bar when Jasper had approached him and requested a drink but Sinclair had refused to serve him, he wasn't a bartender and even if he wanted to give him what he wanted, they were rationing their resources and that included any alcohol that was inside Arkadia. Of course, even if he was a bartender, Sinclair wouldn't serve a kid as messed up as Jasper. The kid needed help, he didn't need more alcohol to numb him, numbing the pain was not the same as dealing with it and what Jasper really needed was to deal with his problems. When the boy had stormed out of the bar, Sinclair had stared after him for a while before going back to his job of locking up the alcohol where people wouldn't be able to get to it.
After he'd put the alcohol away, Sinclair had allowed his mind to wander back to Jasper. He hadn't really had a chance to get to know Jasper, the real Jasper that is. He hadn't really known him back on the ark as he'd grown up on Farm Station and then when Sinclair came to Earth with the rest of the surviving Arkers, Jasper had been in Mount Weather with the other kids. Mount Weather had changed him, he knew that much from stories the other kids told of what Jasper used to be like before being taken to the mountain. Heaving a sigh Sinclair ran a hand through his hair, he figured that he better go looking for the boy, he wasn't in the right frame of mind to be left alone at the moment and Sinclair wasn't somebody who could sit back and watch somebody who was suffering and Jasper was clearly suffering, fighting some internal battle and it looked as though he was losing.
It took the man a while to track down Jasper, he was about to give up on his search when by a stroke of luck he asked a couple of guards if they'd spotted the boy and they directed him towards the rover. Walking calmly over to the parked Vehicle, Sinclair rapped gently on the side of the rover with his knuckles to gain Jasper's attention. "Mind if I join you?" he asked, his voice gentle and relaxed to show that he hadn't come to cause trouble. He hadn't meant to upset the boy by refusing him the alcohol that he wanted, in fact he'd refused to serve him for his own good. Drinking wouldn't solve all of his problems, if anything it would just make things worse.

Sinclair sat in the Earth Monitoring station staring at the blueprints that had been given to him by the Chancellor. The Ark had been irreparably damaged when the Exodus ship had launched and many of the inhabitants of the station had already perished. The majority of the arks stations were without power and pretty soon they’d run out of oxygen and so Chancellor Jaha had come up with a plan to get the survivors down to the ground. Of course the Exodus ship was no longer an option and they were running out of time. Jaha had suggested that they use the Arks thrusters to get to Earth, it was possible but not without consequence. Ninety-five percent of the Arks stations would be destroyed upon entering the Earth’s atmosphere and Sinclair had been tasked with the job of identifying the five percent which would survive the journey.
However, Sinclair didn’t believe it would be all that easy because no matter what he brought himself to do, he couldn’t seem to pinpoint exactly which stations would survive the descent to Earth. Either way it seemed that people would die, if they stayed where they would and waited for their oxygen to run out then they would all die and it was only a matter of time until that happened, but if they went with the Chancellor’s plan then there was a good chance that they would all die trying to get to Earth. The weight of the impossible task was sitting heavy on his shoulders as he let out a heavy sigh and got to his feet. Breaking the news to the Chancellor that perhaps his plan wasn’t as straightforward as he’d originally thought wouldn’t be enjoyable, it would be much easier if it had been possible for him to locate the lucky five percent that could get to the ground in one piece.Marcus Kane
