I can barely control this feeling, look at the ambition in my eyes, then count to five . . . | Cage paced back and forth across the room, his strides short and angry as he considered the options available to him. "What did you think was going to happen? That we wouldn't catch you? This area is restricted, you know that, Dalton." He kept his voice calm and steady as he turned his gaze on the younger man. He knew Dalton well given that the other man worked with the security team, of which Cage was the head of. There had been some issues with him in the past, nothing that he hadn't been able to handle. Overall he was a... good kid, he was just young and dumb in Cage's opinion. Most young adults Dalton's age were. They tended to believe they were ten foot tall and bulletproof; untouchable. But breaking into a restricted area was above and beyond what others had done. And learning about the secret experiments took the cake. It had put them both into an awkward situation. With a deep sigh he sat down opposite the other man. Hands folded neatly on the table, and stared into his eyes. "What did you see, exactly?" |

Dalton kept his gaze steadily on Cage, refusing to show any form of nervousness. He had frequently went into areas that were restricted to him, but he hadn't been caught many times before. Until now. He knew that he was in trouble, but he didn't regret what he had done. He hated secrets and being lied to more than anything. So he went into restricted areas, wanting to know everything about what was going on and what they were hiding from him. He didn't want to be blindly following their orders. He needed to see things for himself.
He watched as Cage paced across the room and kept his mouth shut. He knew anything he had to answer wasn't going to satisfy him, and he didn't want to make him angrier. He had known there was a high risk of being caught, but that wouldn't stop him from trying. He needed to know what they were doing.
He watched as Cage sat down and looked at him straight in the eye. He knew that if he told him everything he had seen, there was a chance that they would...remove him. They didn't want people like him knowing about these things for a reason. But he also had to tell him enough to answer his question, and to keep him from thinking he had seen too much. Just enough.
"I saw our guests being tested on," he said, keeping his emotions out of his voice. Dalton himself had helped to get them from the dropship, and he was surprised to see what they were doing to them now. He hadn't thought much of them, but something was special about those people. They weren't using them for blood like they were with the Grounders. The Grounders, he understood. Grounders had killed his older brother and had nearly killed him. He allowed the transfusions to be done on him in order to heal from radiation, and he wasn't really bothered by how they were being treated. But these kids were younger. They were more like Dalton himself than those savages from the woods. Why were they being tested. What were they doing to them?
He kept his curiosity out of his gaze. He didn't want Cage to think that he was desperate for answers. He didn't want him to know that there was a chance, regardless of the consciences that were going to happen to him right now, that he was going to go back.

I can barely control this feeling, look at the ambition in my eyes, then count to five . . . | Cage cursed under his breath. So, Dalton had seen enough for it to not be possible to let him out of custody. At least not at the moment. That was unfortunate. "You saw our guest being tested on, and have naturally assumed I am the bad guy. The words were stated as fact, not as a question. Cage understood why Dalton, and the others, might feel that way.It could be argued that it was wrong of him to authorise the testing, the experiments, on the teenagers. After all, they were just children; children who had already, in the short time they had been on the ground, endured such terrible things. They were kids who were carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders. They were innocent. They should have been busy being teenagers; living, learning, having fun. Not burying their dead, not fighting for their lives. But Dalton didn't understand. Cage, Lorelei, Carl -- they were all fighting for the people of Mount Weather, fighting to free them from the bunker, to return them to the world.Without the bone marrow of those teenagers, the people of Mount Weather would be stuck there forever. Trapped in the dark. Never free. That was why these experiments were happening. It was why it had to happen."Dalton, would you believe me if I told you there was a way for us to leave in the real world, to see the sun and stars through our own eyes and not a helmet. Those kids? They hold the key." |

Dalton didn't think there was anything bad with Cage. Alright, so he seemed a little bit unhinged, but Dalton didn't necessarily think he was a bad guy. He may not be the best person he had met, but he wasn't evil. That was good enough for Dalton, since he wasn't the best person himself.
"To be honest, I don't think you're a bad person," Dalton spoke, trying to find the right words to use. "All I know is that you're doing something to our guests. I'm sure you have a good reason for it. I'm not in the position to judge anyone. Sir," he added, almost as an afterthought.
He listened to him as he spoke, feeling a bit of hope and excitement flutter in his chest. His toes clenched in his boots with want, and he knew right then that he would do whatever was needed to get them to the ground.
"If there really is a way, and even if we need to sacrifice the guests to get it, I'm willing to do whatever it takes, sir," he told him firmly. "You have my loyalty. Our people come first before the outsiders."

I can barely control this feeling, look at the ambition in my eyes, then count to five . . . | Not one to judge. Cage almost laughed out loud. He knew that each and every person made snap judgements and he was not foolish enough to think that Dalton was any different. He understood that his methods were unorthodox, extreme and cruel; many would think him evil, detestably so, but it was not the case. Cage was willing to make the hard decisions.
Dalton's words were reassuring. “I am glad to hear that.” Cage could not allow their plans to be disturbed. Sacrifices would need to be made to ensure the survival of their people. It had already been decided that if Dalton would not word with him, if his silence could not be bought, then he would be one of their own people given to Doctor Tsing. Taking the seat opposite the young man, Cage stared into his eyes. Elbows rested on the table and hands clasped together. "Now, what are you doing to ensure out people walk outside?" Cage needed all the help he could get and given Dalton was closer to their ages, he would be an asset to the project. |

Dalton hesitated, at least for a little moment. He hadn't done a lot to help get their people to the ground. He had mostly been focused on doing his job, finding out things that he wasn't supposed to know about, and getting into bed with women. So it was a short list that he had of his aid of getting their people to the ground. He considered lying about it, but Cage most likely would know what he had and hadn't done. So he decided to tell the truth and hope that it would be good enough and wouldn't cause Cage to decide discard him.
"Not much, Sir," Dalton admitted. "My job has been focused more on what's on the inside on our home, rather than the outside. But I will do anything to help our people live on the ground. Sir," he added.
He wasn't sure if this was enough, if it would convince Cage to let him help or at least keep him from doing anything to Dalton because he saw something he wasn't supposed to. He would do anything to have the chance to live on the ground. It was his dream, as it was everyone's. Even if they were their guests, there weren't entitled to the ground any more than Dalton and the rest of the people of Mount Weather were. Him and the others deserved to live on the ground. If they had to sacrifice the few for the many, so be it. There weren't a lot of them. They wouldn't be sacrificing a lot of people in achieve what generations of their people had striven for. Dalton believed that him and the others deserved to be on the ground, not trapped inside of the cage that was Mount Weather. Hadn't they suffered enough? If there was any possible chance of living on the ground, he would make sure that they would take that chance.

I can barely control this feeling, look at the ambition in my eyes, then count to five . . . | Cage say back in the chair, stretching his legs out under the table, his expression stern and serious. And then he smirked, the kind that was unnerving and scheming. "There is plenty that you can be doing to help our people, Dalton. Plenty." Dalton was close enough in age to the forty-eight kids that had bought into their mountain. Cage had a suspicion that Dalton, like Maya, would be able to get close to them.
And Cage was not a fool. To have an ally behind enemy lines was an invaluable asset, one that only an idiot would pass up. But these kids were smart, crazy, deeply intelligent, and stupid. "I want you to get to know them." He said simply, as though it was the plainest plan in the word. And it was. Get to know them. Find out their weaknesses, their strengths.
"I want you to be my eyes and ears on the inside, do you understand?" He asked. "And if you learn anything valuable, you'll tell me. You do that for me, and I'll let you go with only a warning." |

Dalton immediately jumped on the offer. If it was between death and being a spy for Cage, he would definitely agree to being a spy. And to be left only with a warning? It sounded too good to be true, but he wasn't about to risk letting the offer go to waste.
"Absolutely, sir," Dalton responded. "I understand. I will get you everything you want to know about them." He knew that if he didn't do this correctly, there was still a chance of Cage wanting to dispose of him. And he couldn't let that happen. Besides, having a chance to do good so him and their people could reach the ground was everything he wanted. If he got Cage the information he needed, they'd be one step closer to living on the ground where they belonged.
