whatever THE HELL WE WANT Wells, Atom, Murphy, Charlotte . . . they had lost so many in so little time. The most recent disturbing loss was Charlotte. She was just a kid, one that Bellamy had intended to protect but instead, took her own life. He didn't give a damn about Murphy; he hoped the bastard died soon for he deserved no less than that. His anger for his former somewhat second coursed through him, but as his adrenaline wore off, it was replaced with sorrow for the loss of Charlotte. On their way back to camp they had made a grave in the growing graveyard for her.
Unmarked, but not forgotten. The others were heading back, but Bellamy was crouching in front of it, his mind replaying those final seconds. He should have just held on to her. He shouldn't have spoken words that she would take so literally when it came to slaying her demons. He should have done more to protect her. He knew he couldn't show any of this for emotion was weakness and he needed to be stronger than ever.
Hearing the snapping of a twig, he spun around, simultaneously pulling out a dagger as he looked at the shadowy figure. The light from the moon and the distance fire from the camp made the lurker easily recognizable. Bellamy relaxed, tucking the dagger back into its place as he looked her over. "What the hell are you doing here?" He questioned, turning his head back to face the grave. It seemed that he and Clarke would be enforcing some sort of rules and discipline in the camp . . . and he still wasn't sure how he felt about that. He knew deep down, that there was no one better than her to work alongside with, yet he couldn't exactly admit that now could he.

Guilt was a funny feeling, it took root in ones body, like an unwelcome vine, a parasite and there was nothing you could do against it, but to ride out the waves of pain it brings you, the urges to yell, to blame others and of course to blame and hurt yourself. Clarke was no exception. What happened around the death of others, felt bad as well, she was one of the first, if not the first to kill here – she had killed Atom after all, but that didn’t feel that bad. Atom would have died either way, more painful suffering. Charlotte didn’t have to die. But she thought she did. What happened that day was wrong and she felt guilt over it, so much. It was her fault. It was her fault, so much of it felt like it was and the truth was as simple as this: It was just her fault, her misjudgments.
At least the groups’ conscience extended to them burying their dead, to give the people who died graves, not overly pretty, but they served their purpose. They had a place to go to, to remember them and they weren’t just left to rot. Clarke held plants in her hand, ivy or evolved from them, but she was sure to only touch them with a gloved hand, not knowing if they were poisonous still or even more so. It appeared she was not the only one seeking a moment alone at the grave. She wanted to wait, the giant ass over there deserved his moment alone as well, had he almost killed over Charlottes death, but it seemed she accidentally had to make herself known. As she shifted her weight a twig snapped under Clarkes boot – resonating painfully loud even in her ear. He turned of course, dagger raised in self defense, which he lowered as soon as he saw her.
“I could ask you the same question.” She came closer, gingerly carrying the plant over to the graves. “But looking at you I have an idea why. It wasn’t your fault.” It was mine, she added in her head as she knelt down, to start with the task she had given herself.

whatever THE HELL WE WANT He didn't fail to notice the plant in her hand. He had to admit -- even if only to himself -- that it was a good idea. That it would add a little something to the grave. Charlotte may not have been innocent, but none of them were. She had just been a kid; one who should have had her entire life ahead of her. Clarke told him that it wasn't his fault, and he remained silent.
He had blamed her, saying that this was all on her because they should have just let the others go on thinking that the Grounders had killed Wells. But he also knew it was easier to blame someone else other than assume responsibility himself. "Yeah," he agreed. She had already said she was wrong and he was right, so he was not going to go back to that conversation.
"And the bastard who's responsible is hopefully lying dead somewhere right now." Murphy. Unfortunately, the idiot was resilient, but then again . . . what was one man compared to an entire army of Grounders. He deserved to die, and Bellamy hoped never to see him ever again. "She didn't deserve this," he added on, speaking aloud his thoughts. Somehow, Murphy had deserved to die for it because that was what the crowd wanted. But Charlotte . . . she didn't. Hypocrisy? Perhaps. But . . . she was just a child. And now she was gone.

Clarke went to work immediately. She found digging in the earth to plant a bit of decoration on those sad and dark graves a better alternative than to focus on him, simply because, well Bellamy might be right in some things, but it didn’t make him less of an ass usually. It was easier to focus on plants that would hopefully soon cover those graves in a green that suggested life, not death. She listened to his actions behind her as the fertile soil ran through her fingers while digging up the hole that would hold one of the plants. Three of them at least were directly connected to her, in some way she was responsible for all of those deaths.
“Not yet.” It was a simple truth. “He survived hanging and your beating, Bellamy. He’s tough, it’ll take a while for him to die.” But eventually he probably would. While he was good at complaining, the basic skills of survival seemed to be entirely lost to Murphy. He’d probably cut himself, not clean it and die of infection. Sounded like something that would happen to him. They were luckier in the camp.
“No… she didn’t. None of them did. If… I could, I’d undo it.” All of it. But she couldn’t. Clarke lowered the plant into the hole, gently pushing onto the soil to make it hold onto the new addition. “I can’t help but think back to it, Bellamy. She didn’t have to jump. You could have stopped Murphy from killing her or me. She didn’t need to do it.”

whatever THE HELL WE WANT She was right. Murphy was a fighter . . . but not someone who could survive on his own. He was a follower, not a leader. "Good," he stated unsympathetically. "Even better if he suffers." He had once trusted Murphy, practically made him a second, but now . . . well, he heavily regretted that. He regretted a lot of things. The Grounders could have him for all he cared about. Just as long as someone else took care of him; either the elements, or other beings in the woods. He casually watched from his position as Clarke proceeded to put in the plants at the graves, listening to her words.
She spoke of how she wished she could undo it, how Charlotte didn't have to jump . . . they could have found a way to have stopped Murphy. "She saw what they did to Murphy." What they did to him, not we. He didn't want to admit just yet that he had been wrong to give in to what the crowd had wanted, that he had been part of that crowd. "She was scared. She . . . " He clenched his jaw, shaking his head a little and fighting back whatever emotion threatened to surface.
"She was just a kid." A scared, little girl with demons that she couldn't fight off. He knew that it couldn't be easy for Clarke to protect her either, as she had killed Wells . . . but still. "I would have stopped Murphy," he said confidently, though deep down, he had his doubts. "I just wish she gave me the chance." Truth be told, he blamed himself for failing her. For not doing more to protect her, and doing more to end Murphy before he threatened her. "I mean, what the hell did he think, that he would get away with hurting Charlotte and you?" He had only a few guys with him. They could have been handled. Murphy hadn't thought it through cause even IF he had managed to punish Charlotte for her crime, Murphy's life would have ended very shortly after, even if Bellamy had to strangle him himself.

Bellamy had been in a bad position when Murphy held Clarke with the blade. He would have had to time everything perfectly correctly, would have always opened up a way for either of them getting hurt. The decision in itself who to throw into danger in order to protect them both could not have been an easy one for him. She couldn’t blame him for taking his time to make it. Nobody could. Looking back a faster decision might have saved Charlotte. It might have also ended Clarkes life. Or in the worst case scenario all three of them could have died.
“I think he thought he could have gotten away with it. I think he thought he could have made the people see she deserved what has been done to him. He might have thought he could undermine me. I am just the princess, remember? I was privileged. I am sure he might have tried to twist it so it would seem he was doing the right thing. There would have been ways.” He probably would have found a twisted way to undermine Bellamys authority, yet without success. He inspired people to follow him.

whatever THE HELL WE WANT Murphy was stupid, that was obvious. She spoke of how he had thought he could undermine her as she was part of the privileged group. He knew that well enough, because he had used that in his argument when convincing the others to take their bracelets off. That she would have the high life when the others came down, and that they would be right back where they started: at the bottom. Yet it seemed things had taken a turn, though that Bellamy wanted the other Arkers to join them. Not after what he did to Jaha.
"Well in this case, undermining you would have meant undermining me as well." Which he did the second he had knocked him out and tried to rally up the crowd. "Guess this is one of the few things we actually agreed on." Protecting Charlotte from getting hung. "And look how well it ended," he mumbled sarcastically. He paused for a moment, finally looking at her properly. "Were you serious about what you said back there, that we would make the rules?" The two of them, together. Or was it just something she said to calm him down in the moment.

It wasn’t their agreement on Charlotte that got her killed, it was the lack of rules. Had the rules been clear, had everything been clear the entire group would have had to back them. And then only the risk of being banished themselves might have left Murphy without support. They could have easily gotten it together then. They should have just agreed on something earlier, if not on those rules, then on a leader. The rules of the Ark too had to change when they came down there. They could no longer justify killing with the lack of room or life support. Things had to change, for good. And they had to start. Clarke turned. She moved so she could sit and look at him, at a moment just taking him in, thinking about his question. Together they had done good. Together, with his way of leading and her, they might handle it.
“Yes. Yes, I was serious. We need rules, desperately. We need to enforce them. You’re right. Things have to change. And we have to start with the changing in order for it to, well, start. So, yes, I was serious. We’re going to make the rules.” Together, as a team and to check and balance the other. It was a good way, at least in her books.

whatever THE HELL WE WANT She confirmed that she was serious. That they needed rules and needed to enforce them. She was right. His whole 'whatever the hell we want' wasn't working. People were killing each other; people were jumping off cliffs. There needed to be some law and order here. He slowly nodded his head, continuing to look at her. "Alright then," he said in agreement. Out of everyone here . . . he knew Clarke was the best person who co lead these people with.
He wouldn't tell her that, but he couldn't deny that either. It was why he was agreeing to this. Had Finn, or Miller, or anyone else proposed making the laws with him, he would have instantly rejected the idea. But with Clarke, he felt like this could work. "They'll listen," he said, knowing that he had been doing most of the leading in terms of working the crowd. "Not just to me, but to both of us." He wanted to assure her of that. He wanted her to know that he was willing to try this out with her, without stating it so obviously. "Whatever the hell we want doesn't work when everyone needs someone to follow." They weren't all rebellious and doing what they wanted when they wanted. They still responded to a leader. And it appeared now, they would answer to two.

“What if they don’t?” It was a good question, at least in her eyes. What if they would not listen to her? What if they decided they needed different rules, different leaders? Humans were capable of bad things, she had seen it then, had felt it with the cold blade against her throat and felt the guilt over having stepped over limits herself. What if they rejected their rules? What if they rejected one of them as a leader now that they agreed to work together, for them?
“What are we going to do? What will the rules be? We don’t kill for punishment.” That was a good one, room was no issue, letting them survive all alone out there was a good option. They could make it, they could be okay, if they tried. But they would be deprived of the group. “We have to organize the group, Bellamy, bring them order somehow.” But how? How would they start bringing a proper order to the people? The beginnings were good, but it was just the beginnings. Her blue eyes were focused on him, trying to read him, not that she could.

whatever THE HELL WE WANT Her question was indeed a good one. A legitimate one. What if they didn't. "Then we don't leave them with any other choice." Banishment was a good way to instill fear into people. "We use Murphy as an example. That whoever doesn't like our rules, they leave." He felt that he had already asserted his authority among them, hell even Clarke had . . . they just needed to reinforce and maintain it.
"Look the most important thing is that you and me are on the same page. No more taking sides. The people follow us together, or they don't follow anyone at all." Meaning, they could leave and find their own shelter. "Those are the terms we start with." With the threat of Grounders, no one wanted to leave the camp. Not to mention that there could be a hell of a lot more out there than just Grounders. "We don't kill for punishment," he agreed. Though of Murphy came back, then he wouldn't hesitate to end him. "We need to pick a few people to be seconds." People they could trust to follow orders if Bellamy and Clarke were not around. "It's a start to getting everything in place, in order. And avoiding any more riots." Like the one that had nearly caused them to hang Murphy.

“That’s terror, Bellamy.” But maybe for the time being exactly what they needed in order to enforce rules and a civilization. She didn’t like it, but if it what it took to keep people alive, who was she to complain? She shouldn’t, not as long as it worked. Then again was it terror? They were free to leave should they not like their idea, they had free choice to stay or leave that couldn’t be terror, right? They didn’t kill those against them. They allowed them to leave. They didn’t send them to their death – unlike on the Ark.
He really had good points about all of this. They needed seconds, they needed people they could trust to carry out the rules when they weren’t there un order to avoid shit. He was right. He was actually really damn good at this, a real leader, if he wanted to be and if he accepted reason. “Every decision about the Grounders has to be run by us, unless it’s an immediate life or death situation.”

whatever THE HELL WE WANT She spoke about how that was terror, and he wasn't in disagreement of it. "Damn right." It was indeed terror. "And that's cause either way, we're living in terror already." Since the moment it was known they were not alone, they all inevitably lived in a state of fear. "And it's that terror that's going to keep our people with us, following us. They know what's out there and where they will be safer." And that was with them. It was better that they follow the rules rather than be left at the mercy of whatever lurked out there in addition to the Grounders.
She went on to say that every decision about the Grounders had to be run by them, unless it was a life or death situation. "Agreed," he stated with a small nod. "But not just about the Grounders. Every big decision that effects the group, has to be run by us. We can't have one small crew trying to call the shots." It was what happened in this case, and Charlotte had paid the price for it. "Speaking of life and death situations, we need to start training the others." Training them to fight; training them to hunt. "With whatever weapons we got." Whatever they had and could create. They needed to be able to defend themselves when going out for they wouldn't always be able to stay behind the walls. Not all of them anyway.

He was right. It was the better form of fear for them, for all of them. Fear the Grounders, stay in line, stay alive, together. With one leadership, who acted together, it would be the best way for all of them to make it. Somehow they could, they would make it, even if right now, she had no idea how. They probably both had no real idea how, but they’d work together to get there, to get this idea and plan.
“Who will train them?” Clarke knew a few had a bit of an idea to fight, but only Bellamys own movements so far suggested he knew what he was doing. The rest, well they were good at trying. Bellamy had the sort of precision to him, that meant he knew what he was doing, another reason why she thought he could protect her and Charlotte that day. He could have, he seemed to have the skill. “You can’t train all of us alone.”

whatever THE HELL WE WANT She asked another fair question, regarding who would train them. She was right; he couldn't train all of them by himself. They would have to prioritize and then delegate. "We'll start with you and the seconds," he told her. That way, those who held some authority would be the best trained, and then they could break off and train in smaller groups. "When they're ready, we can train in smaller groups," he added on, speaking aloud his thought process.
"Miller's good for it," he said, already having a few in mind of who would be good for the job. He paused before listing any more off. They were co-leading, which meant that it would only be fair that they have seconds who she trusted as well, so that there was some sort of balance. Damn teamwork. But, it was better this way. Bellamy didn't want to admit it, but he didn't know how to lead everyone on his own. Knowing that Clarke was with him, gave him a confidence and reassurance that he would never admit. "Who do you trust to appoint?" He asked her, trying to be fair and give her the opportunity without her needing to ask for it.
