TRY NOT TO RUN FROM THIS FREEDOM ALWAYS HAS A PRICE TO PAY
Niylah went with Bellamy silently and offered the only thing she could; a sympathetic gaze to the others who were still there. When he gave her the clothes she pulled them over her cloth undergarments and pulled her hair up. It was messy and filled with braids, dreads and beads making it impossible to keep down. She did her best to hide it under the hat that Bellamy gave her. She was quick then to step into the hall with wide eyes. “Is it clear? Do we have a way out?”
She took his hand tightly in hers, hoping that this plan involved them both, even though that was unlikely. She quickly adjusted the clothing so that it hid all it could and pulled the hood up and over the hat to hide what was left of her hair. She had nothing but a deep gash on her cheek to really set her apart from the arkers but that couldn’t be helped.
Her breathing was fast as she looked to Bellamy for an answer; a command, anything that would tell her what was happening or what was going to happen. He didn’t seem confident... This plan didn’t seem too stable.. but if it would get them out.

They didn’t have much, but there was an inn they had found in Polis that let them stay in return for work. Bellamy took on the most of it, as the rule was they had to pull the weight of two workers... Niylah was thankful, because with every day that passed the little nudger in her belly would grow... They were in a safe place. Every night, Niylah would teach Bellamy more of their tongue so that they would raise fewer suspicions. When night fell, and the inn quieted down it was their time to relax and get a little rest... Niylah was watching the door to their small room, waiting for Bellamy with her shirt pulled up and resting above her bump. She was watching it intently...
It had been months... The baby would kick and move so much you could see it at the right angles. Niylah didn’t know much about having a child, but Bellamy did say that she was getting closer... Odd that he knew more than she did. She was so thankful for his help... There were no words.
The door opened, and Niylah grinned. Her heart might have fluttered, but so did the baby. Their little foot was almost completely visible. “There!” she gasped, knowing it had happened rather quickly. “Did you see it?” She bit her lip and traced the spot where the little kick had been seen, hoping for another one. Bellamy worked so hard that sometimes he missed the things like this... Still, this was better than being alone. They were planning for a home of their own and traded what they could to get it. They hoped that by the time the baby was born, they would be able to leave the inn. “Come here, feel it right here,” she beamed.

Niylah was counting the minutes that passed since Bellamy put her back in the holding cell with the other Trikru prisoners. She was trying to be of help to pass the time; using her own clothing to bandage wounds and keep freezing prisoners warm. She was doing her best to keep people comfortable and to help the injured, even if it left her with even less than what she had coming in. She felt... guilty. Bellamy wouldn’t be coming for them... Only her, and she couldn’t ask any more of him even though they both knew how wrong this was.
She was terrified, but as guards rotated and hours passed she kept a watch for Bellamy and hoped that he was almost there. She was running out of things to do—running out of people to help because there was just nothing she could do for most of them. There was even a child in here who had since lost their mother and come to Arkadia for help, and instead wound up a prisoner. Some of them were healers who had been assisting before the new chancellor was elected. Niylah couldn’t understand why they couldn’t get along and why there was so much prejudice on both sides... then again her people started this fight.
When she finally did see Bellamy she stood up but made no move towards the door. Her eyes were wide, not sure what to expect or what his plan even was. She was just happy that he kept his promise.

Niylah’s post was not far from the mountain, so she had heard the explosions when they happened. It had been hours ago, the shop was locked down until they could figure out exactly what had occurred... Her father was still in Polis, so Niylah was stuck trying to get word from those who passed by... It was then that an Azgeda man, covered in scars and tattoos came to the door. “Ste lufa yo nontu au,” he said gruffly. He was pulling a woman with her—a bag over her head and blood staining her clothing. She was in Skaikru clothes, so even though the man spoke in their tongue, Niylah chose not to.
“My father isn’t here, you can deal with me.” She said sternly as she stepped aside to let him in. Her gaze moved over the woman, trying to see where the blood was coming from... but it seemed to be everywhere. “What are you doing with her?” she asked harshly as she armed herself subtly with a dagger by the door. She walked behind them.
“Your father and I make our dealings. I want the usual supplies—she’s more than suitable as a slave. She is skaikru.” His voice was accented heavily, but he seemed to follow her example. Niylah pulled the bag off the womans head and shot her a sympathetic glance.
“More that suitable? You’re bringing me a broken woman just when the commander has solidified our truce. Look at her. She’ll be dead in days.” She set the bag aside and watched the man for an opportunity. Slaves were of course a growing issue—members of opposing clans would be captured and used for labor or worse. She once met a pleasure woman in Polis... It was disgusting and she wouldn’t let this girl suffer the same fate as her father may have.
“Then I reduce the price. Take her off my hands and give me enough supplies to get me to—“ he didn’t have time to finish his sentence before Niylah struck; slicing the blade across the man’s neck with sharp precision and wide eyes. She was no fighter—and as blood poured down his neck he tried to approach, but she shoved him back where he fell. Quickly, she pulled the girl aside in case he decided to go for her again... but he died fast, leaving her with this bashed up Skaikru girl—she didn’t know what to do. “What is your name?” she asked after a moment of silence.

TRY NOT TO RUN FROM THIS FREEDOM ALWAYS HAS A PRICE TO PAY
It had been nearly two years since Niylah first laid eyes on Clarke... it’s amazing how much can change in such a matter of days. Wanheda, though still very much present in their culture, was slowly becoming a thing of legends and stories. Once, Niylah and Clarke had left to hide away—taking only three hens, a horse and some of Niylah’s belongings. People still hunted her, but they were safer than ever. Skaikru and the twelve clans were at peace and the two were alone. They lived a very modest life with a small home and a large stable. They traded milk and eggs for all that they had and made a home just outside of a large Trikru village.
It was easy to say that Niylah loved Clarke... Such a statement had never been truer. She loved everything from her loyalty to the way her lips parted and her brows furrowed while she drew... She was there for every night terror and every moment of panic, even if she didn’t understand it. This life though? It was something that Niylah had never thought was possible. It lulled them into a state of peace and security... They still had their arguments as most couples did, but they were a different kind of pairing.
Thoughts like these played in Niylah’s mind as she climbed the hill towards their home with two goats in tow. She hoped Clarke wouldn’t be upset about it—but she was able to trade one old bull for the two lively little goats. She saw it as trading meat for milk, though they were attached to their animals. “Clarke? Are you home?” She called out in Trigedasleng as she tied the goats to their paddock fence. There were many times that Clarke needed to be alone and would hunt... it was something Niylah had grown used to over the years.

Niylah relaxed as Bellamy leaned in to kiss her cheek, even if he was doing it to ease her back into the restraints. She trusted him... she didn’t struggle against them and though they were uncomfortable she did her best to act as if nothing had changed. She wasn’t smiling though, even when Bellamy teased the way he did—the situation was too... intimidating. Her head tiled slightly as he murmured by her ear and she did feel... better. He wouldn’t leave her there. God, she was scared that the whole prison of people would be executed, but she couldn’t worry about that now. She just knew Bellamy wouldn’t leave her. Not when he promised her he wouldn’t.
Then he turned her; kissed her once again... if she could, she’d wrap her arms around him and probably never let go, but as he pulled away she could see the facade returning and she had to respect that. Her expression flickered from a soft and accepting one to one of determination. She nodded once. “I’m ready,” she said calmly as he took her arm. How bad could things have gotten here—that this was the norm... Abby certainly couldn’t have had a hand in this.
She didn’t know though. She was an outsider to them... Apparently, they were all grouped together into one kill all category. It had to be hard for Bellamy.

Niylah drew in a breath as he pulled away and looked up at him with widened eyes-- sad that he had to break the kiss. She wanted to stay in this room with him, protected against the guards outside... She wasn't sure what would happen if they returned and found them locked together and close... It was what allowed her to take a step back and nod in understanding. "Stop apologizing Bellamy..." her words were soft as she looked at the handcuffs he held in his hand. "This is not your fault." It wasn’t... Really, she came without thinking about the consequences and now Bellamy was in a spot he shouldn’t have been.
It took a long time for her to calm herself as her sights fell onto the metal cuffs, but she knew it would be a short walk. The metal seemed less painful than the sharp plastic and she knew Bellamy would be gentle, but being restrained took some preparation. “How many girls have you used those on,” she teased breathlessly with a grin before turning around and hesitantly offering him her wrists. Her fists were tight. “Or have you used them?” Still her voice was teasing and desperate for a distraction... He’d need to leave her in the cell, but at least he would let her go.
“Please hurry,” she said after a moment as she turned her head to look at him. There was fear in her eyes when she thought about it. He could be caught... Or maybe he’d be convinced against freeing her. She wasn’t sure... “Just promise you’ll come for me. Really...”

Niylah slowed the horse down to a walk as they approached the edges of the trees. She listened to his stubborn voice and the way he backed off when asked about his leg, but for some strange reason it made the blonde smile. She wasn’t particularly amused—or was she. She didn’t know, but before they broke through the trees she turned and leaned back to kiss his cheek and the corner of his lips. “I know—you’re fine,” she said with a soft chuckle before reluctantly leaving the safety of the forest. She looked at Arkadia with curiosity and worry, but she only let the one emotion show as she brought him towards the gate. She was about ten yards from the arch and she could hear people as they noticed them.
Slowly she turned to Bellamy before slipping off the horse and reaching up to help him if he needed it. The horse blocked Arkadia’s view of them, which was intentional of course. She hated the idea of them saying goodbye now, since there were so many things she wanted to do... Bellamy was special, and to let someone like him go so fast seemed criminal. “Better be careful—next time I see you I might not let you leave.” She teased gently before looking up at him.
“Can you make it back?” she asked softly, worried about his leg.

We’ll figure this out—it meant the world to her to hear it... His skin against hers left subtle vibrations as he spoke. Her eyes had closed for a moment, just desperate to take a moment to enjoy the warmth of having him so close. He sounded confident, but not... This was dangerous, and there was no way that it would be so simple. There were guards that patrolled at night. There had to be... So how did he think he would get her out of the camp? More importantly, would he come with her? How could she expect him to leave his people for this. It took ages for her to take a deep breath and process exactly what he was saying... Her hand tightened around his enough that her knuckles ached in protest.
“If they find out you helped me...” she let the question trail off into nothingness before she wrapped her arms around him and rested her head against the crook of his neck. Another deep breath pulled the familiar scent of him into her throat and her arms tightened in response. How could one night do this to them? It was mutual. She knew that now- but that didn’t make it any less strange... “I can hold on until tonight... I’ll try to help some of the others...” they looked like they were starving and injured. She couldn’t imagine who would keep them in there without aid, but she would do what she could for them in the meantime.
As long as Bellamy was coming back for her, she had nothing to fear. She could calm down... For a long moment she held onto him before letting go and pulling away to wipe tears that didn’t exist. She looked up at him then—at those gorgeous yet pained brown eyes and nodded lightly. “I can go back and wait for you. Maybe... if you can get me new clothes it’ll be easier to sneak me out...” Regretfully she even let go of his hand before standing up and preparing herself for the longest wait of her life... But she needed to let Bellamy come up with a plan and pull the strings he needed to pull in order to get her out of the web she’d gotten herself tangled in. “If only they listened to you tell them to let me leave,” she teased sadly before looking at the door with a frown.
She looked back at him and reached up to run her fingers through his thick curls and pulled him down to her level so that she could kiss him properly before he brought her back to the cell. It wasn’t soft—but it was desperate, as though it could be the last one. It was deep and hungry, but burned with longing. He was her air—and she had no idea when she would be able to breathe again.

When he squeezed her hand that lump shrunk in size. It was silly that a gesture like that was soothing but she took it and did not pull her hand away from his. She could practically hear the wheels turning in his head as he tried to figure it out, but the question still remained... was he going with her. How could she even ask that of him? Before, when the other woman was in charge she could have potentially stayed—but that was a different story now... Then he said it; that he wouldn’t let anything happen to her... She had to assume that meant both of them. Her, and their unborn child. She tried to think of somewhere she could stay; realistically without anything to offer as currency. “Polis... I can.. find somebody in Polis.” She leaned in to cup his face nervously with her fingers playing in the soft curls of his hair... This whole... situation was so stressful. She was trying her best to stay calm.
“You can’t get yourself into trouble... If I’d known what this place had turned into I never would have come. I never would have told you. I know I should have gone straight to Polis...” She’d regret that she didn’t... but there was a time for regrets and a time for action and planning. Her thumbs traced over his cheekbones as though she was memorizing him all over again. It was strange how powerful their bond had been over a night alone... but she knew he was stressed as well. “I missed you,” she whispered quietly. She leaned her forehead against his before kissing him softly and slowly—tongue tracing his lower lip softly as she shifted closer.
“I thought... I needed to tell you. You had to know. I don’t know why it just felt wrong to hide it from you and move on like it wasn’t yours...” Truthfully she was grasping for help; for support and family. Bellamy saved her once and she stupidly let herself become somebody else he had to take care of. It was the last thing he needed. “I can figure this out when I am out of here...”

She watched him in silence as he processed the information. His eyes flickered with emotion but his expression remained the same. In such a short time Niylah had learned that it was his eyes that showed his true self—that he had learned to hide those emotions behind a stoic expression. Every muscle; every fiber of her being was waiting for him to speak; waiting for his choice. What was he going to do? Even her breathing seemed to halt as she waited for him... and when he spoke, she didn’t know what to say... We have to get you out of here... It was probably the best she could hope for but it didn’t acknowledge the real, pressing issue. Even if they got her out where would she go? They had her horse, her bag, everything she possessed but the clothes on her back. The realization of this and the fact that he didn’t reply made that lump rise again. Swallowing hard didn’t make it go away it just stayed there; uncomfortable and threatening to spill—but Niylah never cried.
“—How” she said, breaking through the heavy lump with a whisper. She heard him when he said that he wanted to come... she would be lying if she said she didn’t wait for him. Every night when she heard a knock on the door or was woken by animals scurrying behind the post she thought of him. She hoped it would be him... She knew she couldn’t go to him so she waited until that lovesickness faded into reality. Seeing him now—being in this situation seemed to stir all the emotions she had. They always said that women who carried were clouded with emotion but she’d never believed it till now. Hesitantly she took his hand in hers, only for a moment... “Bellamy they have everything... How are you going to get me out of here...” without her food, water, supplies... she was a dead woman unless she could get to TonDC and find help, or Polis where she could find work. Either way it was a long journey. A journey he clearly would not be taking.
That was what made the lump stay; knowing that coming here only did harm. He was stuck, thanks to the politics of Arkadia, or maybe he just didn’t want a child with her. She wasn’t his people. He felt guilty because she saved him, maybe... that’s why he wanted to get her out. Naturally she thought of the worst possible outcome, and with every thought she tried to swallow the feeling—gasping and gulping dry air to reign those feelings in and focus on surviving. “Will... they let me leave?”

Niylah stared at him for a long moment, trying to decide if she could even trust him. What would he do when he found out? He couldn’t tell anyone about it. Besides, she would end up locked up again she was sure of it. “I shouldn’t have come,” she said slowly as she wiped her cheek with the back of her hand. Bellamy wasn’t in charge. Of course he wasn’t... he wouldn’t have done this... She could see it here though; the weight he had on his shoulders—carrying his people. She only got a glimpse before, but she didn’t realize how much they looked up to him. “I shouldn’t have come—I’ve... just made everything so complicated.” Her tone was tight as she fought off tears—tears. What the hell was wrong with her... She cleared her throat and looked down at Bellamy’s hands, thinking over her words very carefully.
“You didn’t ask for this... I thought... you turning me away was the worst that could happen.” Again, she swallowed that pesky lump in her throat. “I realize now that I really... really shouldn’t have come here.” It had been one night... She saw him as her hero; lifesaver and hell... she felt things for him that made no sense considering how little time they were actually together. Then he never came back. All chaos broke loose... “My father cast me out. I don’t have anywhere to go—I don’t have anything anymore... I just didn’t know what to do.” She avoided his gaze for a moment before shaking her head and forcing out the words—knowing they would either mess his life up completely—or worse. “I’m with child,” she said carefully with her eyes on his. “I know that it’s yours... I haven’t been with anyone else.”

Niylah watched silently, staring at Bellamy through her hazel eyes as he commanded one of the officers who had pulled her off her horse. They listened to him? She couldn’t imagine him being a part of this—group of people who treated her people so horribly but the way he commanded the one guard had her questioning everything she knew about him. She showed no emotion, just as he showed none... This was a different Bellamy than she thought she knew, which only scared her more.
When the guard grabbed her to move her to the other room she didn’t struggle—though he acted as if she was by dragging her along like a doll. It wasn’t until the door shut behind him that she let out a breath. Bellamy moved fast to cut the plastic binds, and she rubbed her wrists with a deep frown. When he touched her she flinched and her eyes narrowed with confusion. “Why did they listen to you?” she asked through tight lips. “Do... you command them?” she couldn’t imagine Bellamy being behind something like this. There were people dying in that room... “I knew it wasn’t safe but—this?” How did she tell him... What would he do? She’d romanticized this...
She thought that he would be able to help her but it seemed like he was working with people who would sooner cut her child out of her. She’d never seen such a clear distinction between her people and his. “Bellamy tell me you’re trying to stop this... that you aren’t a part of it.”

TRY NOT TO RUN FROM THIS FREEDOM ALWAYS HAS A PRICE TO PAY
There was a part of Niylah that didn’t want to believe how much blood was spilt on the land she rode across. The field before Arkadia was not strewn with bodies or stained, but she still heard the stories of the massacre that started it all... She was no warrior; no fighter. Niylah was not even a trader anymore. All she had was her horse and a bag of belongings tied to the saddle. She couldn’t survive alone... So coming to Arkadia was an act of true desperation. She just hoped that Bellamy... remembered her. After all, when she discovered she was carrying his child, her life had been thrown upside-down. After four months she couldn’t hide it anymore. As she approached, she heard yelling—she saw guns being raised over a wall and her hands shot up. “I am not here to fight!” she called out loudly, approaching the gate slowly. “I need to see Bellamy!”
She didn’t expect them to see her as that much of a threat. She was unarmed—but when guards came out under the Arkadia arch, she was met with hostility and quickly spoken words. They told her to get down from her horse but the moment she moved her hands, their guns were raised once again. “Easy,” she said slowly as she moved. They wouldn’t shoot her... would they? Despite everything Niylah still thought the sky people tried to follow a moral compass... perhaps they felt threatened... Before she was on the ground, one of the guards grabbed her roughly by the back of her coat and yanked her down and off the horse—making her yelp with surprise and pain when she hit the ground. What the hell was wrong with these people?
“Please stop—I mean you no harm—“ she said louder now as they pulled her up to her feet roughly. The fall twisted her ankle... where the hell were they taking her? “Bellamy! I need to talk to Bellamy!” She said, louder and louder each time while two guards pulled her arms behind her back and tied her wrists together with sharp plastic ties. She didn’t think.... they would take her as a prisoner? Perhaps turn her away but this? Hells she hoped Bellamy was close. “Please just get me Bellamy! I need to talk to him that’s all!” She tried not to fight the rough handling as she was brought into the large and intimidating building... The metal structure scared her, even if it may have interested her before. The guards—or whoever these sky people were didn’t listen to her at all—but took her deeper into this metal monster... A large door seemed to open on its own before she was met with a glass room...
She recognized people inside... they were her people. Her eyes widened with shock before they opened the door and all but shoved her inside without cutting the tight plastic binds... She turned around just as they closed the door. “Where is Bellamy!?” Her heart was pounding... please by all the gods she hoped he could get her out of here... Tell them she wasn’t here to hurt them. That was the only way anyone could behave this way wasn’t it? It had to be out of fear. The adrenaline coursing through her veins couldn't have been healthy or safe for the child she was carrying, and now that she had a chance to stand, her ankle seemed to flare furiously...
