This is my Fight Song--TAKE BACK MY LIFE SONG, PROVE I'M ALRIGHT SONGIt had always been known to Harper that her and Monty didn't always share the same opinion on things. She was fine with that. They were both big people, people who had gone through hell and had gained their separate views of the world. It never tended to matter much but now it was the only thing on her mind. After the day they had gone through, the trip into Ice Nation territory to get the hydro generator, Harper's muscles hadn't seemed to relax. Her mind kept moving at a million miles an hour, always dropping back to the same thought: He would have let them stay as slaves to grounders. Maybe she was overthinking it. Maybe it didn't really matter if all of them were going to die . . . but it did matter to Harper.
The slaves were such a big reminder to Harper of Mount Weather. She had been the one powerless and locked up, controlled by people that didn't care one bit about her safety but just wanted to use it. The situations may have been different but the parallels were impossible to ignore. There was no doubt in Harper when she had voted to save the slaves and she would do the same thing a million times over, even if it guaranteed her own death in six months time. A small laugh escaped her at that thought. All this training she had done, all the focus on keeping herself alive and out of danger. She wanted to be able to protect herself but there was definitely a growing part of her that was extending that out to others as well.
But when it came down to it, they had six months. That was a long time and something else would be thought of by then. Harper knew Raven was smart enough to come up with something to save them all.
Harper stood up from the edge of her and Monty's shared bed. She rubbed at her eyes, they were still aching from the cold of Ice Nation territory, and glanced over to the door. It was getting later and Harper was beginning to wonder where Monty was. It wasn't that it was overly late, it was just that the day had been so long and Harper felt like she might fall asleep any second. She didn't want to do that without Monty there. Their shared room was something so new, Harper liked the idea of taking complete advantage of it. At the least, there was so much comfort having another body next to hers as she slept. Even with the thought running through her head about Monty's earlier decision, she still smiled at how lucky she was to have him.
When the door did open, the soft smile was still on Harper's face. She pushed away the slight uncertainty she felt at first sight of him and instead walked over, pulling him into a hug. "What kept you away?" Harper asked, a more amused expression settling onto her face. "Did Jasper offer more naked hugs?" She had heard about that and with how shaky things were between the pair, she wanted to try and be as positive as she could about anything she heard about them. It was difficult for Harper to imagine the two not thick as thieves, not with how long she had known them for. When she pulled back from the hug, her fingers lightly slid down Monty's arm, taking hold of his hand. "Nothing bad?" |

Monty was frustrated, they were trying to save people but again they'd ended up doing the opposite, freeing the slaves from Azgeda might have seemed like it was the right thing to do, but Monty knew otherwise, when Bellamy had asked him if they could build another machine, he'd told him no. Even with Raven, there was no other way for them to make water and they'd still voted to destroy it in order to save a few people. Now they had to figure out a way for them to save all of their people, like Clarke had promised and so far they'd drawn a blank as to how they were going to do that. The hydro generator had been their best bet and Monty would be the first one to say that the others had made the wrong choice, they could have freed the slaves another way but there was no way of getting the destroyed machine back. He knew why Harper had voted in favour of freeing the slaves, he knew that it reminded her of her time spent locked up in Mount Weather, she'd confirmed as much but the situation was different and the slaves weren't in any danger while they remained useful to the grounders.
He couldn't avoid her forever and the moment he'd started to yawn, he'd been sent away and told to rest up so that they could revisit the issue tomorrow. He wasn't happy about it, every day counted when they had six months to live and no longer had the machine that they needed, but he hadn't argued. He had expected Harper to be asleep, it was late and they'd had a long day and she really had no reason to wait up for him. However, the first thing he saw when he walked through the door into their room was her standing there, apparently waiting for him to return home. It brought a smile to his face to see her, especially when the first thing she did when she saw him was step forward and pull him into a hug. Monty held onto her for a fraction longer than he needed to before pulling away and laughing at what he assumed was a joke "No... I never want to see him naked again" he told her, unable to keep the laughter out of his voice "I was trying to help Raven think of another way to save everyone without the hydro generator" he admitted, knowing that she'd voted against bringing it back "she told me to go get some rest" that was the only reason he'd left when he had because he was painfully aware of how little time they had to think of an alternative method of saving their people.
When he felt her hand slide into his, he gave it a soft squeeze "I don't know how we're supposed to save everybody, we can't build another machine... Raven's smart but even that is beyond her" if he thought that there was another way to save everyone, Monty might have been more willing to blow the machine up and save the slaves, but he'd spent hours wracking his brains and still failed to think of something that was half as good as their first place. "We made the wrong call" he said we, he meant they. Himself and Miller had wanted to take the machine back, but the others had said no, they'd voted and the majority had voted to free the slaves and it was as simple as that. "You should be sleeping" he mumbled, nodding to the bed that they shared "it's been a long day, you must be tired" he knew that he was and he wanted nothing more than to crawl into bed and sleep for a couple of months, but he'd have to be satisfied with a few hours of rest before he was expected to get up again in the morning.

This is my Fight Song--TAKE BACK MY LIFE SONG, PROVE I'M ALRIGHT SONGIt wasn't hard to notice that Monty held on in the hug for longer than Harper had really intended for the embrace, and she took that as a good sign. With all the thoughts running through her head, especially the ones that worried about Monty's way of thinking and his decision earlier that day, it was good to feel like he wasn't mad at her in any way. While she knew her decision had been the right one to make, she could understand why he might be angry about it. The last thing that Harper wanted was to have Monty mad at her, she cared too much about him to want to deal with that. Especially when it was so late and especially when it was really obvious just how tired the both of them were. "But aren't naked hugs the best kind?" Now Harper wasn't able to hold back her own laughter, letting herself take in the moment before Monty became more serious.
Another way to save everyone. Yeah, Harper should have expected that was what he was doing. Helping Raven as best he could. He was one of the most skilled people in Arkadia and that was one of the things she loved about him, but she wouldn't have thought anyone would want to work after they long day and trip they had already done. She didn't take that comment as anything against herself. It was fair, because they did need to think of something else now that they didn't have the hydro generator. Harper knew that, she still didn't regret her decision. "I'm glad she did that," Harper admitted, squeezing Monty's hand back. "I don't want you working all through the night. I'd rather have you next to me." Admittedly, she also wanted him under her but that wasn't for a night where they were both so tired.
Any trace of a smile faded as Monty continued to talk. Harper tried to keep herself from getting annoyed at his words, wanting to be the positive one in the conversation. She could recall so many times when she had been negative, ranting to Monty about how nothing good could happen, about how they would die. This time he was hopeless and maybe what he needed was for her to be the hopeful one. And she actually felt like the hopeful one. As much as Monty doubted it, Harper knew that Raven would be able to think of something else to save them. "Raven is sm--" Harper blinked a couple times, having spoken at the same time as Monty did. His word cut her off and drained the remains of control from her. "We did not make the wrong call today." While Harper wasn't shouting, her voice wasn't exactly quiet either.
After a moment's pause, Harper pulled her hand away from Monty's and took a step back away from him. He spoke of sleep and Harper just shook her head, not planning on letting him get away with the comment he had made. "Do you actually think it was best to leave them there?" she asked him, her voice cracking slightly, anger building as she spoke. "They were going to be moved. We may have never been able to find them again. We don't know Ice Nation that well. Not even Bryan." As the words flooded out, Harper knew she wasn't going to be able to stop them because she needed to make sure Monty knew what he was really saying when he said that they had made the wrong decision. "We have six months, Monty. Those people wouldn't have had anywhere near that long. And there were children. Trapped." |

Monty smiled at her comment and the sound of her laughter "naked hugs are great... Just not with my brother" he thought he was going to go blind when faced with seeing Jasper in the shower. There was nothing wrong with Jasper, it's just he didn't need to see that, everyone else was welcome to get an eye full as long as he never had to see it again. He just wanted to sleep, preferably without images of naked hugs with Jasper invading his dreams and he was deeply concerned about that being a real possibility when they were talking about it just before they intended to go to sleep. When Harper told him that he was glad that Raven had sent him to rest, he let out a sigh "I'm not, we haven't got time to sleep" they would have, the hydro generator would have bought them plenty of time to sleep but now the thought of sleeping gave Monty a sense of dread, like maybe they were wasting too much time on sleeping and not spending enough time trying to figure out a way to save everyone. He loved going to bed at night with Harper lying next to him and he'd hate to give that up for anything but they'd have all the time in the world to spend sleeping once they'd figured out how to survive past the six months that they'd been given.
He didn't notice the smile fade from her face until after she'd spoken again and her hand had slipped from his and she was telling him that they hadn't made the wrong call. Monty searched her face, looking for any sign that she didn't really believe what she was saying but found nothing. "Do you actually think it was a good call to use our one shot at saving our people to save a few people who will all be dead in six months anyway?" he argued, it was a difficult situation but the fact still remained that they'd chosen to free a few people instead of saving their whole community. "We could have found them again! We're allied with Azgeda, their king could have freed the slaves himself, what happened to talking to him? You were all for that before you found out they were being moved" it wouldn't have been ideal to leave them there knowing how brutal Azgeda could be but it would have been their best chance at freeing them whilst still having the means to make water so that all of their people could stay alive.
"Exactly! We have six months!" Monty raised his voice louder as he spoke "six months to figure out how to save our people, those slaves were fine, as long as the grounders still had a use for them they'd be okay!" it wasn't complicated, the grounders obviously needed slaves, they weren't going to kill people that they needed, even if their living conditions weren't great, they'd still have time to negotiate their release with the king if they'd left with the machine when they had the chance. "Six months isn't a lot of time! I'm sorry, freeing a few people from the grounders might have been a priority a few months ago but now we have to look at the bigger picture, if we make sacrifices like this every time we see somebody in need then there will be nobody left in six months to save" it was the hard truth, he just needed her to see that. He wasn't saying anything with the intentions of making her mad, he just needed her to understand the severity of the situation and how their actions that day had made things ten times worse.
