There were many times since Kia had begun training, and even after he'd started to become a good fighter, that Kia had been kept from the main battles. Forced to keep watch near the entry point of Yujleda, expected to fight only if the battle reached their door. Kia understood that his father and Nolia did not wish to put their future Emperor in great risk, but Kia had grown restless. How could he really learn to fight if he didn't really fight anyone with true hostilities toward him? He eventually plead his case to Nolia, and she must have spoken to his father, because they started sending him into combat.
His already growing skill improved even more with each fight that passed, and his confidence grew. Having to think on his feet in actual battle was a thrill as well, fighting along side people who had grown to become friends... one of them more than that, though it was far from that simple. Vero usually stayed close in combat as much as possible even before he knew Kia's true identity, but after he was told the truth, Kia did not miss that he caught flashes of Vero in battle near him even more often.
Today was no different. Kia saw a whir of blonde hair that must have been Savannah flash past his vision in the distance, and an unmistakable hulking form closer to him, moving more quickly than it made sense for a man of Vero's size to move. Kia was focused on the man coming for him, though, and lost sight of his friends. He handily blocked several swings of a blade with his spear, then thrust it through the man's throat, killing him, but another was coming. He barely ducked in time to miss a blade aimed at his neck, the whooshing of it past the top of his head rustling his hair.
He ducked and rolled behind the man, jumping to his feet and thrusting his spear through the man's back. Yanking it out, he turned again, but barely saw his next attacker before his blade pierced through Kia's ribcage deeply. He cried out in pain, collapsing to his knees, and someone tackled the man who'd stabbed him, but Kia could only focus on the sudden pain and didn't see who. The blade still lodged in him, he collapsed onto his hands, breathing hard, feeling disoriented suddenly. He had to get the sword out of him, but his eyes stung with reflexive tears and when he went to pull the blade out, his hand closed around the blade and not the hilt, cutting his fingers and palm deeply. Another moan of pain escaped him, but he was far more concerned with his sudden inability to think.
