It had seemed like a good idea at the time. (Didn’t every story start like that?) Hunting wasn’t going to be enough to keep all the delinquents alive on its own, so Shiloh had decided to pitch in with foraging for plants and other food sources. But that required a partner. No way was she going out there alone. Not unarmed. And she didn’t trust the trigger-happy boys gravitating to Bellamy as far as she could throw them. Instead it was a girl who eventually drawn her attention. One with a knife who slipped in and out of camp frequently enough that she must know the area pretty well by now. Hopefully she wouldn’t mind the company.
So Shiloh had talked the girl, Rylee, into letting her tag alone one day, a makeshift bag over her shoulder to hold whatever edible or medicinal flora they might gather. Things had gone well enough at first. Shiloh wasn’t much of a talker, so there had been few words exchanged. But they had turned up some plants to add to dinner and a couple that might help Clarke. And then the rain had started. Not bad at first. In fact, it was actually pretty magical considering Shiloh could still count on one hand how many times she had seen rain. The downpour rapidly increased though, and soon it was coming down too hard to see clearly. Rather than risk getting lost, the two girls had taken refuge in a cave to wait out the storm.
And now here they were. Shiloh was sitting up against the stone wall near the entrance to the small cave, silently watching the falling drops outside. It wasn’t showing any sign of slowing down. For now, they were stuck. Which would’ve been perfectly fine had it been just Shiloh. But Rylee seemed the sort who would try to talk to pass the time, and Shiloh wasn’t the best conversationalist. Especially with people she didn’t know. So she just sat and watched the rain.
“It’s beautiful,” she said, more to herself than the other girl. There was something almost calming about the repetitive sound of the drops hitting the ground. Shiloh figured she could fall asleep to it. Another sound reached her ears, and she suddenly realized Rylee was saying something. Shiloh turned her head, redirecting her gaze from the rain to her companion. She had completely missed the words. “What?” Now she probably sounded rude. Perfect. This was precisely why Shiloh preferred to keep to herself.
