The music was up, the drinks were flowing, and Harper McIntyre was doing everything she could to forget about the world beyond this single room. Everyone else had left hours ago to go live in an underground bunker for five years, suffering together and trapped. Trapped - just like they had been in the Ark. She'd tried to pack and go with them all. Really, she had. But standing in her room, imagining years of cold metal and no sun, living with the images in her mind of Louis and the other people she couldn't save or the ones she had killed - she couldn't. She couldn't go back to being trapped, even if the bunker somehow was this miracle stronghold, and she was done. She was done with everything. They were all going to die anyway, and at least this way, she'd get to choose how she went out. Harper laughed with everyone else and took another sip of her drink. When she lowered the cup, her eyes caught Monty. He was sitting beyond the group, watching. His eyes met hers for a moment and she quickly looked away, pretending to be into the story Riley was telling next to her. Seeing Monty here twisted her in two different directions. Selfishly, she was glad that he'd stayed. She didn't want to be alone even though this had been her choice. She wanted his face to be the last one she saw, to hold his hand at the end and let herself be comforted by the very fact that he was next to her. But the initial joy of seeing him again after she thought he was already gone was wearing off. He shouldn't be here. Monty should have left with the others for the bunker, where at least he had a chance of living. Here, there wasn't one - and everyone knew it. In a few days, all of this would be over, and if Monty was still here then... "I have to pee," she announced suddenly, eliciting a laugh or two from the group. She stood up from her place on the ground, cup in hand. She started along the bar, making toward the bathroom even though it had just been an excuse. Mostly, she'd just needed to get up. Harper glanced back to where Monty had been. He was still there. She stopped to lean against the bar, watching him for a minute, then decided what's the use? Everything will be over in a few days. She lifted Jasper's pitcher, poured a little more into her cup, and made her way over to him. "Why are you still here, Monty?" she asked him, stopping a few feet away from him to lean against the wall. "And why are you not drunk?" She smiled a little, as if that were the real question and this wasn't a serious conversation. She should be having zero serious conversations in these last days of her life, but she couldn't help it - she had to know.

Arkadia was almost empty, save for the few that had decided to remain behind because they were too scared to carry on fighting. That’s how Monty saw it anyway, he’d watched everyone else leave the place that had become their home after they’d escaped Mount Weather all those months ago and although he knew that he should be leaving with them, he’d been forced to stay. He couldn’t leave Arkadia, not when two of the people he cared about most in the world had stubbornly decided to stay put. How could he possibly leave them to die whilst he and the rest of their people went to live safely in a bunker for the next five years? He almost expected this of Jasper, his brother hadn’t been himself in what felt like forever but it had taken him by surprise when Harper had told him that she wasn’t going to Polis with them. Now they were running out of time and everyone around him was drinking and seemed to be enjoying themselves but Monty couldn’t, he couldn’t just sit back and drink himself into a stupor, not when there was somewhere for them to go, somewhere that could save them. As far as he was concerned, they’d come too far to just give up now, it was just a shame that not everyone shared his views.
Choosing to stay behind had been hard, but he didn’t think he’d be able to live the rest of his life knowing that he’d left people that he loved behind. His gaze swept the room and locked with Harper’s briefly, she was standing on the opposite side of the room with a small group of people, she was laughing and drinking like the others but as soon as she noticed him staring she quickly averted her gaze. He looked down to his lap as he bounced one knee agitatedly and when he looked up again, he noticed that Harper was no longer standing in the same place that she had been just moments before. Monty began to look around the room, trying to be as subtle as possible with his searching but by the time he located the young woman again, she was making her way towards him.
Harper stopped in front of him and he heard her ask him why he was there, he would’ve thought that the answer to that was obvious, at least, it was to him. “I’m here for when you change your mind, when you all change your minds” he answered her, despite knowing that she’d probably just shoot the idea down and tell him that she wasn’t going to change her mind about this. “I wasn’t going to leave you and Jasper behind” that just wasn’t an option for him. If they weren’t in the bunker when the death wave hit then they’d all be dead, he didn’t want that but he wasn’t prepared to leave people to die, not when there was a chance that they could change their minds. “ Somebody has to stay sober and I don’t see anyone else volunteering” he shrugged at her next question, everyone else in Arkadia seemed content with drinking themselves to death, he was the only one who was currently willing to stay sober. “Besides, if I got drunk then there’d be no one left to drive you to Polis when you change your mind” he explained, forcing a smile as he gestured to a seat beside him, hoping that she’d accept the invitation to sit with him.Harper McIntyre

Maybe Harper really had at least suspected why Monty stayed, and that's why his answer angered her more than brought her guilt. Was there ever a time when he could just accept things for the way they were? When he he wasn't so damn sure that people were good and would do the right thing? She couldn't remember a time in which Monty didn't have hope, where he ever gave up. It was one of the things she liked so much about him, but right now it was infuriating. She wanted him here, with her, but she didn't want him dying because he thought he could save her and Jasper. "We chose this," she said, glancing back to her fellow partyers for a moment. Jasper had joined the group, and they seemed to be starting up some sort of drinking game. "We're not going anywhere." She felt certain of that - or at least, she was going to make herself certain of it. Everyone else here knew it, and this was it. The end. She'd been so naive when she'd thought she could always keep fighting. People were dying even when she fought to survive, so what was the point?
Harper looked back at Monty as he answered her second question. "I'm not going to need a driver," she reminded him, probably uselessly. If she changed her mind right now, she didn't doubt that he'd run and start getting the rover ready. She didn't want to change her mind though, and she didn't want him to change her mind. He could probably do it too, and that was why she probably shouldn't be talking to him. But she couldn't help it. He was here and that was still important, whether or not it was a good thing he'd stayed.
Monty gestured to the seat next to him, and she hesitated a moment before sitting. She'd already made her way over here, and there was no use pretending she was just checking up on him before rejoining the party - even if that's what she told herself when she walked over, and even if he never got it. "We've still got a few days," she said, trying to stick to the subject with better grounding. She offered her cup to him and raised her eyebrows. "Are you determined not to enjoy any of it?" Monty hadn’t expected her to accept his reason for staying, it’s not like he’d expected her to run and get her things together once he’d told her why he was there. Harper had made it pretty clear that she didn’t want to go with him and the others to the bunker, that was her choice but he didn’t need to like it and he definitely didn’t accept it. He’d thought about respecting her decision, but he couldn’t bring himself to leave without her and Jasper. He couldn’t lose anyone else, he wasn’t strong enough… He didn’t feel strong enough to do that.
He followed Harper’s gaze when she looked away from him and noticed that Jasper was now standing with the others. “Yeah… Well, you chose wrong” he told her, shrugging his shoulders half-heartedly. It was hard to act as if their decision hadn’t pissed him off, even just a little bit. They’d decided to leave him, he didn’t want to sound selfish, but that’s what would happen if they died. He’d be left alone, they were the closest thing he had to family left and they’d decided to just die when they had a chance to live. “You could have chosen life” he muttered, it seemed like an easy choice to make, life or death, but some people still managed to make what Monty thought was the wrong choice. “You have a chance to live and you’re just going to throw it away” he said, turning to look at her once again “this isn’t like you Harper, you’re a fighter” or at least, she used to be. From what he’d seen recently, Harper didn’t seem too interested in fighting.
It scared him to think that he might have to leave her behind, to leave everyone in Arkadia behind because if it came down to it, he would leave without them. If he failed in trying to persuade them to come with him, then he would leave for Polis, he wasn’t about to wait around and get himself killed waiting for them when they weren’t interested in following. “We’ll see” he answered her, a small smile appearing on his face “at least you know I’m here if you do need a driver” maybe he was just clinging onto false hope that she’d see sense and change her mind, but at least he was there if someone needed him anyway. If they did decide to try the bunker, then he could at least do something useful and get them there.
He was grateful when she sat beside him, it meant that she planned on hanging around, at least for a short while. When she offered him her cup, he hesitated slightly, weighing the possible consequences up in his mind. They had a few days, there was still stuff he needed to do but he had time and if he didn't drink then there was a chance that Harper would grow annoyed with him pressuring her to change her mind and walk away. How would he persuade her to come with him if she didn't want to speak with him. So, he reached and took the cup from her outstretched hand "thanks" he muttered his appreciation before taking a sip. He wouldn't drink much, he could afford one drink, but that was all that he would allow himself.

"Yeah… Well, you chose wrong." Harper grit her teeth a bit as she continued watching the others. Monty dismissed her choice so easily, with a shrug and that... disappointment. She hated that - the disappointment, and the fact that he was disapointed in her. Somehow, when she had listened to him speak before he was supposed to be leaving for Polis, that disappointment had made it easier. She'd let people down already, so it wasn't surprising she let down one more. It really meant she deserved to stay here. Now that he was still here, did that change things? It felt like his disappointment was harder to bear, especially when everything and everyone else around her was carefree. The others had fully embraced the path ahead, and she wanted to. But his presence complicated everything."Things change, Monty," Harper found herself saying, as Monty again told her she was a fighter. "I changed. Do you really think we're going to be able to just walk into that bunker and live happily ever after? There's always a fight and I... I just can't do it anymore." Things were better here. She wasn't throwing anything away, like he said she was. She was choosing something for herself - and when was the last time she'd really done that? Actually, she knew the answer to that one, and he was sitting next to her. She hadn't regretted that choice, although it had led to him being here, now, hoping she would change her mind.
Harper rolled her eyes a bit when he reminded her she had a driver, though she smiled a little too. She'd already tried to kill his optimism, and there it still was. It was good, because it meant he was still here, and bad for the exact same reason. She wanted to move past that for now, though. She was here to enjoy the rest of her short life, and she didn't want to weigh it all down with these heavy topics. So when he accepted her drink, her smile grew. "See, not so bad," she teased.
Harper leaned back against the chair, letting him have as much of it as he wanted. She could feel the effects of the drink enough to last her for a bit now. She reached over and took Monty's free hand, threading her fingers through his. "It's kind of like the beginning," she said, glancing back to the others for a moment with a smile still on her face. "Back before we knew what was down here. Whatever the hell we want." Tag: Monty Green

“Not like this they don’t” Monty argued when she told him that things changed. They couldn’t change like this, Harper could just decide that it wasn’t worth it, if she did then everything they’d been through would be for nothing Everything they’d done had been to ensure their survival and if she decided now that she didn’t want to live then what would it all have been for. “Life isn’t easy, it’s never been easy, even when we were up on the ark it wasn’t easy… The only difference now is that you used to be willing to fight” he couldn’t hide his disappointment in her, he didn’t want to hurt her, that was the last thing that he wanted but he couldn’t respect her decision either, not if her decision was to die. “I love you, Harper… That should be enough to make you want to fight, as long as you have people who love you then life is still worth living” that’s at least how he saw it. He couldn’t lose another person that he loved, he’d already lost his parents, he didn’t know how he’d cope if he lost Harper and Jasper too.“Not so bad” Monty repeated what she had said, but not good either. He didn’t know how she could be so calm about the situation they were in. He definitely didn’t feel like he was calm, but he registered the teasing tone in her voice, maybe he’d try to play along…Maybe she could have a day without worrying, then he’d try again to persuade her to come with him. He didn’t want to have to leave her behind and would do everything that he could to prevent that from happening. It had been so long since they’d been able to relax, he could spare a day. They had a day.
He took a couple more sips from the cup before offering it back to her, copying her actions as he leant back in his own chair, trying to relax his body despite knowing that in a couple of days everyone that remained in Arkadia would be dead. “It kinda is” Monty agreed remembering back to their early days on earth, back when the only thing they had to worry about was hostile grounders. “We’ve come a long way from whatever the hell we want… It feels like it’s been years” but it hadn’t been anywhere near that long. So many things had just happened so fast that it felt like it was such a long time ago.

Harper just shook her head when Monty argued back. He had no idea how this felt, the pain and fear inside of her so worn out that it was turning to apathy. Everything had been about survival, since their very first step on the ground, and she didn't want to fight to live just to die tomorrow."Don't," she warned as he continued trying to make the case for how important it was to live. She really didn't want to hear his arguments now and his disappointment in her. Maybe coming over here to talk to him wasn't such a great idea, a thought that was furthered when he told her that he loved her. He just put it out there like some truth obvious to both of them. At one time, she would have loved to hear it, but now it only seemed to hurt."It's not enough," she told him, anger starting to creep into her voice. "Just don't, Monty. It's my decision to be here and I don't want to talk about this anymore. If you had been enough, I would have left with everyone else." Harper regretted the words almost as soon as she'd said them, but she didn't - couldn't - take them back. Of course she cared about Monty, he was the last person she really did care about, but it wasn't enough. He shouldn't have stayed. If this was the only thing he would talk about with her, then she would just rejoin the party and try not to think about him. Wasted enough, she'd probably be able to accomplish that just fine. If he hadn't accepted the cup she offered - and the change of topic - she wouldn't have stuck around any longer.
Harper watched Monty drink, both relieved and... something else. She couldn't just feel happy that he was giving in to it, even if just for the moment, but she'd have to at least pretend to. It was the only thing that made sense - he'd done what she wanted. But what if she was starting to change his mind? She pushed the thought away and took the cup when he handed it back, taking another sip herself before letting it rest on her lap. "Yeah," she agreed. It did feel like they'd been on the ground longer than she'd ever been on the Ark. "We haven't come so far, though." She gestured to the others. "I mean, we kinda missed this whole stage when they locked us up and then sent us to the ground to die." Harper half smiled, then suddenly set her cup on the floor and stood up. She took both of Monty's hands in hers and tried to pull him to standing too, her smile widening. "Let's take advantage of it. What do you want to do before the end of the world?" She raised her eyebrows, hoping he'd take the bait and come up with a good distraction for both of them. Tag: Monty Green

“Don’t” Monty registered the warning in Harper’s voice and it took all of his willpower to look her in the eyes. He was upsetting her by going on about how she was making the wrong choice, she knew that he didn’t approve of it and still he insisted on reminding her of that. It was hard for him to respect her decision when her decision was to die, he couldn’t imagine his life without her now and yet, she was going to leave him. She didn’t want to live. “I’m sorry” he apologised to her, hoping that his reluctance to accept her decision wouldn’t push her away from him. If she went through with her plans, then they only had a couple of days together and he didn’t want to waste the precious few hours that they had fighting. It was just hard for Monty to accept that she was giving up, they’d been through so much and she’d been so strong and now she wasn’t even trying to fight.
What she said next took him by surprise and it hurt, he felt like somebody had punched him in the gut. He wasn’t enough to make her want to live, but she was the person that had made him want to keep fighting, to keep looking for a solution to their problem because he needed her to live. He’d been so angry when he’d found out that Clarke hadn’t put Harper on her list, he hadn’t even cared that he wasn’t on it, because he cared more about her than he did about himself, Harper was worth saving. He just wished that she could see that there were still things worth living for, even if he wasn’t one of those things for her. “I obviously misunderstood how you felt about us” he told her, trying to keep his voice level so that she wouldn’t see how much her words had upset him. She’d never looked unhappy when she was with him, she hadn’t even given him a reason to suspect that she might not want to live anymore and yet that’s exactly what she was claiming now. She wouldn’t even let him speak about taking her to the bunker now, she’d made her mind up. “Yeah, well we didn’t have much time for all of this when we had to worry about the grounders that were trying to kill us” Monty laughed, he imagined that this would be quite nice if he didn’t have to worry about the death wave. “That first day on the ground… Before we found out about the grounders, that was pretty great” he told her, smiling at the memory. Any good memories he had of the ground seemed to be tainted by the bad ones that followed them, but he considered the fact that there were good memories of the time they’d been on the ground to be a miracle considering everything that had happened, he would’ve liked to have had more. When Harper took his hands in hers and he felt her trying to pull him to a stand, he didn’t bother resisting and allowed her to pull him to his feet. He let out a shaky sigh when she asked him what he wanted to do before the end of the world and his brow furrowed in thought as he tried to think of something. “I don’t care what we do, as long as you’re with me” he told her with a weak smile, if they were going to die then he’d rather spend his last hours with her. However, it did make him regret not looking for the weed that Jasper had reminded him about before he’d gone with the others to farm station, now that would have been a great distraction.

Harper hated how her words must have made him feel, and could see that hurt even though he was trying to cover it. But it had to be true, if she was here, if she still felt like this. "I guess so," she responded to his words, her eyes anywhere but him. Maybe it was for the best. She didn't want him to get his hopes up that he could somehow save her, and maybe hurting him now would give him the strength he needed to leave before it was too late. Maybe then he wouldn't expect anything out of whatever time they had remaining there, and so she wouldn't either.
Monty laughed, and the sound of it made Harper smile. He might not have totally accepted her attempt to change topic and mood, but he was trying. "It was a really good day," she agreed, remembering that brief moment of bliss before the reality of Earth came crashing down on them. Everything about that day felt like a dream, too perfect to have actually existed. There weren't many moments like that in her life.
Harper was a little disappointed when Monty didn't exactly come up with something for them to do, but he was sweet even in that. How was it he could still say things like that, after what she'd said to him? She was teetering between pushing him away and pulling him closer. She'd tried the former, and now found herself going to the latter. She moved closer and kissed him, both because it seemed like the thing to do here and because she wanted to. Her arms wrapped around his neck, pulling herself closer to him. She tried to take in the feel, smell, and taste of him as she did so, the kiss gentle but lingering. Monty's presence here might be confusing, and she probably should be trying to keep her distance more than anything else... but it was still Monty.
When Harper pulled back, she kept her face close to his. "I have a few ideas about how we can spend the time until you have to go," she said softly, her smile suggestive. Bad idea? Probably, but that's what also made it good. That stuff had always been so easy between them, and maybe it could take away some of the gravity of their life and death situation.
