He felt a sharp pain on the right side of his chest everytime he inhaled, so Hunter tried to take only shallow breahts which in turn left him feeling lightheaded. He couldn't even remember what had set his father off last night, but it had been one of the worst beatings in weeks. As the man's fists, feet and cruel words had kept raining down on him, he'd thought for a while that he wouldn't survive this time. Mr. Solomon had also managed to cause a gash on his son's forehead and a split lip, breaking his own rule of not leaving any visible marks on the boy.
Hunter was no doctor but he had a faint suspicion that his father had broken at least one of his ribs as he held on to his side. He leaned his back against the wall behind him, breathing heavily for a moment as it was such a strain on his lungs just to take small breaths all the time. He leaned his head back as well, closing his eyes for a moment as they threatened to fill with tears from the pain pulsing through his ribcage. When he blinked his eyes open again, his surroundings seemed a bit more blurry than before, the edges of his vision blackening and his face was covered in a thin layer of sweat.
Usually he would take a trip to the infirmary when he couldn't handle an injury on his own. But Dr. Griffin already seemed suspicious of his many cuts and bruises and he didn't want to have to find more half-true answers to her uncomfortable questions. This one seemed pretty bad too and he would have to lift up his shirt for her to examine his injury, revealing more bruises and scars on his torso like the markings of his father's belt all along his back. He closed his eyes once more, his face contorted in a desperate grimace as he didn't know what to do.
