whatever THE HELL WE WANT Bellamy Blake Kane -- son of Marcus and Aurora -- was currently at home, and this was one of the rare ocassions that he was by himself. Braeden had left not too long ago, and e had decided to spend a bit of time just getting things organized. He had an early morning shift and wanted to make sure things were in order in his apartment. He started with his bed, but as he was in the process of making it, he heard someone at the door. Heading toward it he opened it to reveal his father, not having expected to see him right now.
"Dad," he greeted, stepping aside so that he could enter and closing the door behind him. He only ever used this title when they were alone. In public, he tended to use his father's formal title . . . out of respect of course, and to show that he was not given special privileges. Though he supposed that his quick moving in the ranks was thanks to his father's position but still. "Didn't expect to see you tonight." Which didn't mean his father wasn't welcome . . . but Bellamy didn't fail to notice that his mother was not with him. Was this work related then? He wasn't sure what it was but his gut was telling him something was up, and he tended not to ignore his instincts -- something his father and mother had both taught him.

The news was not good, and Marcus wasn't sure he liked what had to be done, but at the same time he knew that there was only one way to make sure it could be done. Which was why he was was knocking at his son's door. He had the code, just as Bellamy had the code to enter into the Kane household, but it was respect for his son that he never just entered unless Bellamy was expecting him at a certain time. "Dad," His son greeted her, and Marcus walked in the room, his eyes scanning around--a subtle father's inspection of his son's life.
Marcus wasn't strict with his son growing up, any more then he hoped Bellamy needed, but looking at his place and seeing it in order was pleasing. "Didn't expect to see you tonight." No, but this wasn't a social visit. Marcus waited for the door to be shut, before he sighed, "I'm not here as your father tonight, Bellamy, I am here as a member of the council." What he had to ask of his son would not be easy. "I know that without me needing to say it, that you will not break orders and speak to anyone. However, as this is a secret that has already got one good man killed, I need to ask."
"If the council trust you with a secret, one that involved the lives of everyone on this Ark, will you keep it? Will you protect it?" He paused and looked back behind him, were a sea-foam green pair of panties were tossed in the corner. "From everyone in your life--mother and lover." Looking back at Bellamy, Marcus waited for his answer. He would come back to the panties later, right now he wanted to focus on work.

whatever THE HELL WE WANT Marcus began by saying that he wasn't here as his father. It was about business, and there was something concerning about Marcus Kane's tone of voice. Bellamy remained silent, allowing his father to finish explaining things, though didn't give answers right away. Instead, he spoke of a secret that had gotten a man killed and Bellamy was intrigued by that. Not in a good way of course. It was as he had previously established, concerning. Hell, it was alarming. Something was happening and it was no small matter. Bellamy noticed his father's gaze go somewhere and he casually followed it.
The younger Kane member kept his reaction guarded, though internally he felt a burst of . . . well, however one would feel when ones father found the underwear of a lover. Bellamy casually made his way over to it and kicked it under the bed. It was too late to hide it, but at least his father wouldn't have to look at it again. He then walked back to where Kane stood, standing in front of him, forcing himself to focus on the conversation at hand. "I will," he told him with a nod, confidence, certainty in his voice. Keeping a secret from his mother . . . from Braeden, one of this magnitude because even though Bellamy may not know what it is, he knew it was serious. "You have my word," he added on, wanting his father to know that whatever the burden of this secret was, he was here as his son and Officer to help him with it. "What is it?" He questioned, keeping his tone from sounding too casual. This was business, and therefore, there was a required formality . . . especially since his father had just seen Braeden's panties.

Marcus gave a nod to his son at the words that Bellamy gave him and then paused to collect his thoughts. "This will not be easy for you to hear, any more hen it will be easy for you to keep. Your first instinct will be to protect the ones you love, but I need you to know that everything that can be done--is being done." Which was something important for him to keep in mind while he heard the rest.
"The Ark is dying. We cannot continue to support oxigine for the population for more then a year or so. They are trying to work on it now, to see what can be done. For now, we have to make sure the engineers that are working on this have everything they need--and their work remains top secret." That was vital. "The population would go into a panic if they knew, and we need to avoid panic at all cost." Which was why they needed someone in charge of the engineers. He stopped here to give Bellamy time to adjust. The news was massive and it had taken Marcus a while to wrap his head around it, and he had known for a few days. It wasn't easy knowing that his son could be amidst the ones who would pay the price if they failed.

whatever THE HELL WE WANT Bellamy continued to brace himself for his father's news. It was serious, really serious, and when he said what it was . . . well, no wonder his father looked so concerned. No wonder this was top secret. His jaw clenched, suppressing the emotions associated with this news. Naturally, there was fear. The Ark had survived for almost a century, but it would not last another. It apparently wouldn't even last a year! His father told him that everything that could be done, was being done.
He had faith in his father; he believed him when he told him this. But that didn't stop the fear for what it meant for everyone. A fear that his father had understood . . . hell, most likely one that he shared. "What exactly is being done?" He needed to know. His voice wasn't accusatory, but rather, curious. He had to be professional about this. His father had told him he came here not as Bellamy's father, but as the Vice Chancellor. "If the oxygen levels can't be repaired . . . what's the alternative?" There had to be an alternative. There had to be a back up plan. Bellamy didn't want to think of the worst case scenario, but right now, he had no choice. He needed to know as much as his father could tell him.

"What exactly is being done?" A valid question, but the answer would always be the same. Not enough was being done. The population was depending on the engineers, and Marcus wasn't sure what else COULD be done. All suggestions was open. "We are putting every engineer we have on it, and giving them limitless free range to try and find something to fix it. The engineer who found it didn't want to keep the secret, and he was floated for going against the council. He made a video and tried to release it. His daughter who was helping him is locked up as well. She is under 18, so that might save her." He didn't like the idea of floating the engineer when they needed him; but he liked the idea of floating the girl just to shut her up even less. Still, the law was in place and he would carry it out if need be.
"If the oxygen levels can't be repaired . . . what's the alternative?" Marcus took a deep breath before answering. "Population reduction." He explained. "We are already running numbers and seeing how long we can wait before it's too late." Because if this could not be fixed in a year, then they would need to do something to buy more time. Something to give them more time to try and fix this. "We are also trying to decide if Earth could be livable again." Even though it wasn't time for humans to return, if they could then it could be save them--Marcus wasn't putting his faith in this one however. He didn't think it would work.

whatever THE HELL WE WANT Bellamy listened intently as his father spoke about what was happening, or what was being done to address this. Bellamy didn't see the logic in floating the man who discovered the problem. If he was able to discover it, he could have been able to help find a solution. Or they could have at least used his expertise. Why didn't they just put him in isolation like his daughter? Though Bellamy knew questioning it now was futile. The man had already been floated.
They needed to loo at their current options, not dwell on the illogical decisions that may have cost them. Besides, Bellamy knew his father. He was a rational man. It wasn't until his father said population reduction that Bellamy felt himself slightly tense. He didn't like the sound of that. "Like what, floating the underage prisoners?" He asked, trying to make sense of what direction they would want to go in terms of the population reduction. There were children in there.
But, that was not the most shocking piece of information that his father had given him. It was his lastly spoken words that struck intrigue in Bellamy. And he wasn't entirely sure if it was in a good way. "How is that being decided?" He inquired. "Are you sending someone down there?" As a test subject? Was this and population reduction linked? Surely not. It was too risky. Who knows what awaited them on Earth. Their own theories and tests only went so far. Hell, they didn't even know if they could breathe the air down there.

Bellamy was a man of a rather sharp intelligence, so it didn't surprise Marcus that he would snap out a reply, or that his sassy reply would be rather close tot he idea at hand. "Like what, floating the underage prisoners?" Or rather directly on the nail. Marcus said nothing in comment to that, but he knew that his expression and silence would be a conformation in it's self. Bellamy needed to know all this in order to do his job with the team he was guarding, which was why Marcus was letting him know all the details. "Are you sending someone down there?" He asked, and Marcus held his silence for another moment.
Only to give his son a change to settle between unsettling details. "The council has spent many hours in debate over the matter, and they had decided that the best way to buy the time needed for engineering to fix it, and to test to see if Earth is survivable, is to send 100 people down to Earth, thus cutting the population enough to buy us the time, and finding out if Earth is livable. However, we are not doing it yet. It's only an idea they are holding to vote on should they not fix the air within the time they have." One year. One year to fix it before 100 of the underage prisoners would be boxed up and sent to die. Marcus didn't like the plan, but he would support the council. As a father he hated it, but as a leader for the Ark he knew that if they didn't cut the 100 loose in a year, then they would not last long, and there would be no one left to save. "With any great luck, we will not have to make that vote. We do however, need to have a plan in place, because if we reach the deadline, then it will happen very quickly." And they were already working to make sure the drop ship could make it to earth.

whatever THE HELL WE WANT Bellamy didn't fail to notice his father's silence. The way he looked at him, the way he didn't respond to his question. But when he spoke, Bellamy just stared at his father as he explained what the proposed plan was. They couldn't be serious. Sending down a bunch of delinquents. Nothing had been decided apparently, but they had clearly put enough thought into this. Acting as if they were lab rats in a horrible experiment. It was clear that his father wasn't in favor of the idea, as he spoke of hoping that it didn't come to that. At the same time, with the way he spoke about it . . . Bellamy feared that it was already in favor by the council.
If they wanted to test whether Earth was livable, as well as reduce population . . . this would take care of both those things. "They're going to send down a bunch of delinquents?" Bellamy summarized, just making sure he wasn't misunderstanding anything. "There are kids in the Sky Box." Young, kids. What did they expect them to do? "Even if they prove Earth is liveable, how the hell are they going to survive?" Bellamy was fairly certain that he wasn't asking anytihng that his father hadn't already considered. He did after all get his line of thinking from him. His work ethic, his intellect. "Tell me there's more to this plan than just sending a bunch of kids down to Earth." Surely there was a team going with them; a way to make sure everything was safe . . . and that they didn't kill each other even. There were criminals among that group, and it could result in utter chaos if there was no one there to control them.
