Josephine is a complicated woman. She is generally a happy person but is manipulative and sarcastic, with a bad habit of rolling her eyes when annoyed. She can be underhanded, deceitful, and cold towards those she does not know or care for. She is intelligent and ambitious, as well as intuitive. Josephine was born on Earth to loving parents. Her childhood was good, and she excelled in life, both at school and socially. As a teenager she was ambitious, with life goals that included a scholarship and paid internships she has never intended to join her parents on the Alpha Mission. These plans changed when Dave, the man who had been stalking Josephine, committed suicide while she studied with a friend at a local diner. Josephine accepted a position on the team alongside her parents after this as a way to escape what had happened. Dave's death would stay with her for years to come, was an event she would not speak off, but one that affected her deeply.

During the initial stages of the mission she became acquainted with a man named Gabriel Santiago, someone who would quickly become quite important to her. It was not long after meeting that they formed a romantic relationship however their relationship was a star-crossed romance. As the lovers found themselves trapped beneath the first Red Sun Eclipse, Russell, Josephine's father, had killed her due to the influence of the planets toxins. For twenty-five years Josephine was dead... and then one day she wasn't.

Gabriel had accomplished the impossible - they had conquered death by reverse engineering their mind drives. Her resurrection was traumatic, which added to the depth of her character and changed her in more ways as she grew accustomed to an immortal life. She began to display concerning behavior; sacrificing people, even children, in the name of the Primes, proclaiming herself a Goddess, manipulating and abusing those considered below her. Josephine spent years believing that this was one of the reasons Gabriel betrayed their people and why he left her. She had convinced herself that he hated her. And that hurt her as she still loves him deeply.

The arrival of strangers to their planet did nothing to curb her behavior as her mind was uploaded into the body of Clarke Griffin. She came to have a mutual respect and hatred for the other woman, who proved to be troublesome by surviving the procedure that should have erased her mind. The experience was quite amusing if not extremely frustrating as they fought for the right to Clarke's body.
