salvation comes at a price
Marcus had talked Jaha into doing something horrible to save their people. He didn't like it, and it broke his heart, but he had to do it to keep them from fighting. After Jaha got everyone in a rage, there was no backing down from it. No speech he could give, no moment Octavia could steal to make a point. There was only one way out, and he took it. They would follow Clarke's list and save only these people. He was on it. Abby was on it. Even Jaha was on it, but not many other adults. Their age worked against them, and they needed the young to be able to regrow their numbers in five years.
WHe moved over to Callie, and knew she wasn't on Clarke's list. Brushing back her hair, he felt his heart swell. He couldn't let her die. Lifting her into his arms, he passed her to a grounder, "Take her too my room." He told the grounder. Marcus leaned forward and kissed her forehead, before allowing the grounder to take her away. He felt Jaha move up behind him, and he turned to face him. "She can have my spot." He told him, giving his old friend a slow nod before moving on to help finish sorting their people. Jaha didn't say anything, just gave him a knowing look. Jaha had always known how Kane felt about Callie, and it was sad but no surprise to the man that Marcus was going to die, so she could live.
In the end, it never came to pass. Bellamy, and Clarke didn't make it back with Raven; leaving them with three extra spots to fill. Marcus, David Miller, and another was pulled in at the last second. They would live too. Marcus walked slowly to his bunker. Not many had rooms to their selves, but he had one. A few others too. Pausing outside of the door, he wondered if she was still in there. If she had been told what he did. She had to have known her name wasn't on the list. She knew he loved her, even if they had not often been together, and even if he had not shown it to her at times. But Marcus knew. He always knew.
He would die for her.

We've been conditioned to not make mistakes Callie knew she wasn't on the list. She had known that ever since it had been read out at Arkadia. She also knew that her name was not drawn. And . . . she'd accepted both these things. What she could not so easily accept was the fate of her daughter. She needed to know that Lilly would be safe. That she would be given a spot among them. She knew Marcus would be safe. She knew Abs would be safe. She just . . . needed Lilly to be safe too. With all that her daughter had been through . . . it would seem so cruel to subject her to the death wave now.
Sacrifices would have to be made, Callie knew that. The Ark always had to do that and she had once been so angry at Marcus for it. But understanding had come when they were constantly faced with difficult decisions. And, she knew that her anger was misplaced. And in its stead, was an admiration for the man who did what so many would not be able to. Make those difficult decisions. The crowd however was amped up, due to Jaha's suggestion of fighting this.
Callie's skills had often kept her in a position where she could calm and manage the crowds. But, not in this. It was too late for that. She couldn't entirely blame the others for wanting to fight . . . just as she couldn't blame those who did not want to risk it. But before any outcome was made, everyone began to collapse to the ground, Callie was no exception. Darkness consumed her and all she could think about was the unknown fate of Lilly.
When she awoke, her head felt heavy and disorientation quickly set in. Where was she? She abruptly sat up, the action only making her head spin more as she looked around the room. Was this--? The door opened before she had time to process the potential answer, seeing Marcus on the other side. Somehow without it being said, she knew that her questions had been answered. She looked at him, foremost feeling relieved that she was alive. That he was here. But there was also that other thought that she could not keep back. "Lilly?" She asked, her eyes wide with concern, with fear. Was her daughter safe?

salvation comes at a price
He pushed opened the door, and paused at seeing her appearing to just be waking up. Marcus shut it behind him, and walked forward toward her. "She is fine, her name was on the list." Marcus reached a hand out to touch her face, just checking to see if she was alright after being drugged and the fall to the floor. He was grateful she had not hit her head. "The grounder that she is so fond of took her to his area." Marcus and Callie had been together long enough that he was fond of Lilly. She wasn't his daughter, but she was very important to him. "I am going to have to seek him out, aren't I?" During their time together he had sometimes joked that since Lilly was the closest thing he had to a child he would have to vet her boyfriends. That had been years ago, and before he and Callie and ended their relationship. It was a slight joke, and reminder of those times.
But right now, he knew Lilly was safe. He was more forced on making sure Callie was alright. "How is your head?" He remembered the sight of there. Her face that normally held an adorable expression of anything ranging from pride to annoyance with him had been blank. Her face was expressive, and to see her almost lifeless there had caused his hands to shake. He had been unable to send her to die. Had Bellamy, Clarke and Raven made it back then he would not be here right now. Octavia said they were going back to the Ark. It would be years before he knew if they made it. The unknown was unsettling. "You should rest a bit more. I can send word to Lilly and have her find you here when she is able. The affects of the gas should wear off quickly." He paused, before asking something that just came to mind. "I can get Abby if your head is hurting?"

We've been conditioned to not make mistakes His response was all she needed to hear. That Lilly was fine. Callie breathed a quiet sigh of relief at the revelation, now able to better focus on the circumstances. Of where she was and how she had gotten here. Hearing Kane say that her name was on the list made Callie curious. Because . . . her own name was not. Callie gave a small smile, subdued only due to everything happening, and everything that had happened.
Yet Kane's words were also a relief. For it meant that the person Lilly so dearly cared for, was also safe. "Just, try not to scare him," she said, trying to encourage the tease though knew the joviality that her voice should be filled with was not all there. "He has no where to run." Another . . . jest, yet laced with the truth. They were all confined here for the next five years. Moving to sit up more, she shifted her legs over the edge of the bed.
Not yet attempting to stand but just sitting properly upright, a light shake of her head at the suggestion. Yet again, it came with the revelation that Abby too was safe. But then, Callie never doubted she would be. "I'm fine," she assured, the small smile on her lips in attempt to further convince him. She looked at Marcus, her mind spinning with questions. She had to ask. She could not keep silent about the subject. "Marcus . . . my name wasn't on the list." Though it was a statement, it was filled with questions, her gaze also reflective of that. Of how this was possible.

salvation comes at a price
He found himself watching her, grateful she was here and knowing that he had come so close to loosing her. "Just, try not to scare him," she teased him, and Marcus smiled at her. He wasn't sure he could scare he grounder but he would give it his best effort. "He has no where to run." Like back on the Ark. They were not back at an enclosed population, and most of that population hated them. If they had learned that Skikru had tried to take the bunker, then there would be blood.
"I'm fine," She told him, and Marcus felt relief at knowing she was here, and alright. Knowing she was alive and safe made it easier for him to do what he needed to do, and think about how to get radio communications with the Ark. "Marcus . . . my name wasn't on the list." He stayed silent for a moment, knowing that she hadn't been on the list, but also knowing that he couldn't let her die.
"Clarke, Bellamy, and the others never made it back." His voice was slow, and low, holding an underlying emotion. Callie would understand, since she knew how fond of Bellamy he was. Over the course of their time on Earth, Kane had come to think of the young man as a son. It had made these last few months hard with so much between them, but he still cared deeply for the younger man. "We lost radio contact with them, but last we heard from them was they weren't coming back. They didn't have the time, so instead Raven was going to try to get them back to the Ark. We were able to take in four more people, since Monty is with them."
