Being a thief and an orphan had made suspicion Cleo’s natural state of mind. But her guard was up higher than ever as she followed after Morial. The woman had spared her life yesterday, and for what? To train her? There had to be more to it. Having a full meal and a warm place to sleep for the night had only made Cleo warier. Nothing was ever truly free in this world. Everyone had an angle. So what was Morial’s? Make her a slave? Use her as bait? Years of instinct were screaming at Cleo to take her shot and run. Although attempting to get away hadn’t worked out so well yesterday. Besides, some small part of her was strangely curious. If Morial really did mean to teach her, maybe it would be worth the risk to stick around and pick up a few new tricks.
Cleo wasn’t stupid though. She didn’t trust the warrior as far as she could throw her. Which was admittedly farther than would be expected from someone her size, but still. The point held. Trust got people killed in Cleo’s world. She had her arms crossed as she followed after Morial, both as a sign of defiance and to create easy access to the knives hidden up her sleeves. If this really was a trick, she was fully prepared to put up a fight.
Morial stopped walking, and Cleo did the same. She kept her stance light as she tilted her head and raised an eyebrow questioningly. “Okay, this was your bright idea. What’s the plan here?” Most of the fighting techniques Cleo knew had been learned in actual fights. The learning curve had been life or death. How did someone even go about officially teaching that stuff ? Or had this been the plan all along? To lure her into false security and then beat her to death for attempting to steal? Because Cleo was far harder to kill than she looked.
