.:Name:. Emily Knight .:Nick Name:. Emma, Em, Monkey (short for “grease monkey,” childhood nickname used by her family) .:Affiliation:. Mount Weather .:Age:. 20
| ~ • ~ | Appearance | ~ • ~ |
.:Physical Appearance:. Never seeing the sun has given Emma a paler skin tone. Her blonde hair may get pulled back if she’s working on something, but usually it’s too much trouble to deal with. Her blue eyes always seem alight with ideas. Most of the time Emma is talking or moving around unless she’s thinking hard. Which could spell trouble. It’s not unusual to find grease on her hands. Or sometimes her face. She also has a habit of picking up small objects to fiddle with. Her clothes are a bit worn like everyone else’s in the mountain, but her bright smile makes up for it. Pair that with her practiced puppy dog eyes, and it can make for a devastating combination. .:Height:. 5'7" .:Portrayed by:. Britt Robertson

.:Personality:. Emma is too smart for her own good. Her teachers called her gifted, both for her intellect and her talent with mechanics. She tends to have two settings – apathetic and fiercely motivated. If she can’t see the value of a task, she won’t do it. Period. If she does, however, she’ll give herself to it fully to the point that nothing else exists. But like most intelligent people, she tends to get bored. That leads to trouble. Emma has no problem bending the rules in the name of fun. She’s a vibrant girl who loves to have a good time, and her cheerful attitude makes her friends easily, although she prefers hanging out one-on-one or in smaller groups. Sometimes she comes across as rebellious thanks to a habit of questioning authority. Emma wants to know why things are the way they are. And if she doesn’t like the answer, she says so. She doesn’t usually mean to be rude, although she can be a sassy little spitfire when she wants to be. She just has opinions and no problem sharing them.
For all her activity, Emma can also be quite deep. She loves to have meaningful conversations and is surprisingly attached to poetry. (She blames it on being named for Emily Dickinson.) In many ways she’s a wide-eyed optimist constantly marveling at the magic of life. The world beyond fascinates her, and she often bugs her uncle to tell her about it. She even has lights on her ceiling in the shape of constellations. But that dreamer’s spark can also be her undoing. Sometimes she feels trapped inside Mount Weather. There’s a whole world beyond. A world she can hear about and imagine but never touch. Sometimes it goes to her head to the point that she becomes withdrawn, wondering if her life can even mean anything stuck inside a box. That’s part of what drives so many of her escapades – a need to feel alive.
.:Special Skills:. Emma has a strong talent for mechanical engineering, whether it be fixing a broken machine or tinkering with spare parts to make something new. She's not half bad with electronics either.

.:Birthplace:. Mount Weather .:Family:. parents (both work in medical), twin brother Oscar (died at age 2), uncle iah2 , aunt (deceased), cousins Michael and Vincent .:Occupation:. engineer in training .:History:. Emily and Oscar were both named after writers, and they quickly proved to be quite intelligent children. They walked and talked early. It was Oscar who christened his sister Emma as that was easier for him to say. But while Emma’s development continued to progress, Oscar’s body began to struggle. His parents eventually discovered he had a rare genetic disorder already too advanced for Mount Weather’s facilities to treat. He passed away shortly before his third birthday.
Losing him was hard on the family. His parents were devastated, and the question of whether they should risk having more children caused a crack in their marriage that never mended. Emma fared a little better. She was young enough that the memory of losing her brother gradually faded. But the unconscious pressure of trying to live enough for two would persist throughout her life.
Emma was an active child always exploring and asking questions. While other children were building block towers, she was trying to take apart a radio. It wasn’t unusual for her to wander off exploring the mountain. Her parents got more than a few heart attacks that way. They expected their curious little monkey to excel in school, even starting her a year early, but the opposite actually proved true. Most classes were too easy. Emma spent far more time daydreaming and planning mechanical projects, with the result that she only just barely passed most grade levels. The failure to live up to her “full potential” drove her parents crazy.
Maybe it was the constant bickering from her workaholic parents that caused Emma to gravitate toward her mother’s sister. Or maybe the lack of constant expectations was just a welcome haven. Whatever it was, Emma grew up close to her aunt and eventually the security worker the woman married. A connection that proved extremely useful as Emma entered her teens.
By that point her mechanical talent was blossoming. She could bend most any machine to her will if she just had the right tools. No door was ever truly locked around Emma. And her boredom knew no bounds. Despite her popularity, she saved her real mischief for her closest friends, arranging hangouts in restricted areas the guards wouldn’t check or using a connection in agriculture to get her hands on weed. But she never did anything truly dangerous or destructive, which was probably her saving grace. Eventually the guards learned to just roll their eyes and page her uncle. It wasn’t unusual for Carl Emerson to get called to deal with a supposed disturbance only to find his niece waiting for him with her best apologetic smile.
Emma was in her late teens when her aunt got sick. Watching her slowly waste away made Emma feel more helpless than ever. The woman’s eventual death led to an escalation in Emma’s behavior as she struggled to come to terms with the loss. An engineering internship helped get her back on track. The work gave her something to truly immerse herself in, which curbed her need to find entertainment elsewhere. Not that Emma ever truly stopped being mischievous. But the frequency of calls to her uncle definitely decreased.
She scraped her way to graduation and threw herself into studying engineering full time. Her parents were a little disappointed it wasn’t a loftier profession. Emma, however, was in love with the work. Life was good, but something in her still burned to see the ground. If there was ever a way to make that dream come true, Emma would have given anything to make it happen.
NOTE: Margie approved the mention of and connection to iah2 .
