.:Name:. Rey Carter .:Nick Name:. Carter or Sunshine (as in “ray of”, an ironic nickname) by other guards .:Affiliation:. Arker .:Age:. 23
| ~ • ~ | Appearance | ~ • ~ |
.:Physical Appearance:. Rey is slim but muscular. She keeps her hair short because long hair is too much work. Her smiles must typically be earned, and it’s far more likely to see her looking grim or solemn. One irritated look from her is generally enough to make someone back down. She has a prominent burn scar on her left arm from a fire when she was young and a few others gained from recent battles with Azgeda warriors. .:Height:. 5’7” .:Portrayed by:. Lauren Cohan

.:Personality:. At first glance, Rey comes off as a bit prickly. She’s rather closed off, and her habit of bluntly speaking her mind doesn't make friends easily. But the distance she puts between herself and others is completely intentional. Rey was introduced to loss at an early age, and it left its mark. Underneath it all though, she actually has a pretty big heart. It just takes some digging to find it. In fact, that’s half her problem. Rey feels things deeply, even if she pretends not to be affected. It’s what makes her so quick to anger, but it also makes her fiercely loyal to the people she cares about. Rey would do absolutely anything for those she truly considers friends. Even things she knows she shouldn’t.
In some ways, Rey is the perfect soldier. She’s brave, resilient, hard-working and good at what she does. But she’s also stubborn, and while she will certainly follow her orders, she doesn't always agree with them. With that said, Rey can always be counted on to see what needs doing and get it done one way or another. Even if she knows it’ll keep her awake later. She may not always seem to care for the individuals around her, but she’ll fight tooth and nail to protect the group. And no matter how hard life knocks her down, Rey just keeps on getting back up. She acts like she’s completely unshakable, preferring to keep her vulnerabilities well hidden. Like being afraid of fire. Or that she still has nightmares about the day her parents died. But she’s a firm believer in the idea that what doesn’t kill her can only make her stronger. It's the surviving it part that's tricky.
.:Special Skills:. Rey is a sharp shot with a gun and also quite talented at hand-to-hand combat thanks to years of training. Her real talent though is her ability to set aside emotions and do what needs doing.

.:Birthplace:. Factory Station .:Family:. parents Peter and Alicia Carter (both died in a fire), grandparents Jack (died in the culling) and Sarah Warren (died of a sickness) .:Occupation:. guard .:History:. The first few years of Rey’s life were happy ones. Her parents were factory workers in love with her and each other, and life was relatively simple. Then when Rey was five tragedy struck. A mechanical accident sparked a fire in the part of the station where the family lived, and a lockdown meant to stop the flames from spreading also prevented escape. Rey was small and managed to climb out through a maintenance shaft. The fire was eventually contained without any real damage to the station, but Rey’s parents were among the handful of people that died. The flames also left Rey with a burn scar and nightmares that persisted into adulthood.
The little girl was taken in by her mother’s parents on farm station. Rey’s grandmother was never really an affectionate woman, but she tried in her own way. Jack, on the other hand, was coldly civil, although never cruel. It took Rey several years to understand he blamed her for escaping the fire when her mother hadn’t. Devastated from the loss of her parents and dealing with trauma from the fire, Rey coped by retreating to nooks and crannies of the station like the shaft that had saved her life. Her explorations led to her knowing much of the station like the back of her hand. She could disappear into it practically any time she wished, much to the consternation of her grandparents.
School was a bit hit or miss for Rey. She was smart but didn’t see the point in many of the subjects she was taught. Her solemn nature and fiery temper led to her having very few friends. It also resulted in fights as Rey’s anger caused her to lash out. Her grandfather finally tired of having to bail her out and began teaching her a bit of self-defense. It didn’t take Rey long to discover that doing well at those lessons was the only time her grandfather, a member of the guard, seemed to show any real interest in her. So she kept learning. The fighting stopped as she became capable of getting the upper hand, and her behavior slowly began to improve. Things derailed a bit when her grandmother grew sick and eventually passed away. But Rey soldiered on, hiding her tears where none could see.
Somehow she managed to graduate, although just barely. She promptly put herself on the track to be a cadet. Most people expected her to flunk out, her grandfather included, and Rey was determined to prove him wrong. Despite her insistence that she could fend for herself, she found herself craving the old man’s approval. So she fought for it. This time around she actually excelled. Especially when the cadets graduated to physical training. Rey had always been a fighter, and for the first time in her life she had a place where that side of her was encouraged. Provided she kept it within acceptable bounds, of course. The day she became a full guardsman was the only time she could remember her grandfather openly smiling at her.
Her short time as a guard on the Ark was pretty repetitive, to the point that it almost got boring. Rey was forced to connect a bit with her fellow comrades in arms in order to keep things interesting. And then the world began to fall apart. The Ark was running out of air. Rey’s grandfather volunteered for the culling, giving himself up so others could have a chance to live. His last words to Rey were a gruff order to look after their people in his absence. A command Rey became determined to keep.
Even that great sacrifice though wasn’t enough in the end. The Ark finally came crashing to the ground. Farm station made it, but they landed deep in enemy territory. The next few months were brutal. In a way, though, they provided the crucible Rey had always needed. Her intimate knowledge of the crashed station made her a big help fortifying the wreckage. She quickly fell in behind Charles Pike, a man whose leadership she came to genuinely respect for his willingness to do whatever was necessary. Between the increased responsibility and the stressful pressure of surviving, the soldier who finally emerged from those woods was far stronger than the one who had crashed into them.
The reunion of farm station with the Ark was a relief, but it didn’t go as smoothly as hoped. Rey’s loyalty to Pike and the blame she placed on Marcus Kane after the culling made it hard for her to transfer allegiance. The destruction of Mount Weather shattered any chance of a shift. When Pike went out to deal with the Grounder army, Rey went with him. (Although she did maintain certain doubts about what they did that day.) She held no ill will for the Grounders as individuals, even respecting them in a certain way as fellow warriors. But she also believed only one side could survive, and she was determined to do whatever was necessary to make sure it was her people that emerged victorious.
