He had tried. With the stick in hand(his father didn't trust him with a sword) he had tried to deflect the blows his father attacked him with, feeling his arms go numb from straining to keep him at bay. At the end of it his father called an end and departed back inside, but not before giving his son a stare of disappointment. The small boy was just that - small, scrawny and a complete disappointment to his father. He dropped the stick when his father had vanished from view, running towards the rivers that crossed through the lands in order to find some solace.
He tried. He really did. When he failed to block a blow it wasn't because he wasn't trying, he was tired and small and he just couldn't. He ran until he couldn't run anymore, his lungs and legs burned as he reached the waters edge, not even bothering to wince when he ran across the jagged stones. This part of the river, while wide, it wasn't deep enough for the river monsters to swim in. They were in the deeper parts of the river and the lakes where they wouldn't get caught on the rocks. A stick lay by his feet in which he bent down, picked it up and went to throw it into the water.
Arm pulled back, he was ready to let it fly when he saw movement. Not the river monster but smaller and he dropped the stick to kneel on the sharp rocks to try and get a closer look. His hands went from resting on rock to dipping into the water, feeling the cool liquid wash over his skin. The creatures seemed oblivious to his presence which was fine by him, he'd heard of the monsters that came for blood when they knew food was near. Or so his father had said. Derrick had never actually seen them before and frankly, he didn't want to.
