Inspired by - We Are Grounders: Part II (Season 1, Episode 13) [When the delinquents waited in and then left the dropship after burning the grounder army to ash.] The sound was roaring. It surrounded them completely and left them with nowhere to go. It was like a pride of lions circling them on all sides. There was no escape. In the roar there was no other sound but for the screams that came from outside, the victims of roar's fire.
Harper's grip tightened on her riffle. Keeping her gaze down on the floor of the dropship, she felt moisture building in her eyes. It was that calm inside of the roar that left her fighting to stay in control. The lull in the battle that left her unsure of what to do. Even the battle inside the dropship had calmed and the grounder was under control. There was nothing for them to do but wait. Harper blinked away the tears in her eyes, tipping her head back to keep them from rolling down her cheeks.
The silence stayed even when the roar faded. It was like everyone was scared to break the silence and find that there was still a battle to be fought. Maybe they were scared that it was really over. Harper wasn't sure which she was afraid of, just that she didn't wish to open her mouth just yet.
The silence quickly became deafening.
It was Clarke that made the first move, pulling the lever that opened up the dropship once more. It was she that made the decision to see what fate they would face. Knowing that it was what she needed to do, Harper stepped up to Clarke's right and followed her as she moved outside again. Fox flanked Clarke's other side, no weapon on her person. Harper's gun stayed half-raised in her hands and her finger rested on the trigger. She didn't know what she expected but somehow it wasn't what she came to face.
The saturation had been drained from the landscape, leaving nothing but grey. Harper's breath caught in her throat but she didn't let it show. She tried to hide it. Bodies littered the entrance to the dropship, grey as the ash they were buried in. Not even bodies, there was nothing but bones and blades. Harper scanned over the grey and took in the sight. She urged herself to stay in control. Just as she had managed when she thought she would die crashing to the Earth. As she heard of the grounders. As she learned how to shoot. Just as Harper had done earlier in that battle when she had taken her gunner position next to Jasper. She knew how to stay in control.
Her gun was lifted as she moved off the dropship's door and onto the ash surrounding it. She kept her eyes high, watching for signs of stray grounders, making sure that they were actually safe. It was hard to believe that all the grounders would have been close enough to be melted. The moments continued and Harper heard the delinquents pouring out of the dropship as she started to walk further out with her gun. There was no sign of trouble. No sign of grounders. Harper found herself lowering her gun eventually and turning to face the others.
They had won.
If only Harper hadn't let her guard down so soon, maybe the red smoke wouldn't have left them all falling to the ground. It seemed she wasn't deserving of that happy moment. Not yet at least.
