Lexa, as leader of the Grounders, commands respect and is very powerful. However, she is clearly seen to be more reasonable and merciful than the other Grounders, and more willing to trust the Sky People. Lexa has shown to be the voice of reason among the chaotic nature of the Grounders, she has a very neutral personality and is more of the logically gifted Grounders yet to be shown. After Costia, the woman she was in love with, was killed by an enemy trying to gain information on Lexa, she decided to detach herself from people emotionally, believing love was a weakness she could not afford to have.

Lexa grew up with The Woods Clan. The clan taught and brought her up to be a fighter/warrior. Her skills were so impressive Anya made Lexa her Second.

At some point, Lexa began a relationship with a Grounder named Costia. Costia was kidnapped, tortured and beheaded by another Grounder clan, the Ice Nation.

When Lexa was 16,[1] she formed a Coalition between all 12 Grounder Clans and became the Commander of the 12 Clans. [2]

Lexa is  respected and the highest ranking grounder due to her accomplishments by bringing together the 12 clans. She has known love and friendship and been damaged by both, without parents to aid her she has been her own authority figure through out her life. She loves Clarke deeply but due to having protect her own people she feels no remorse truly for betraying her.
