Best Unity Day Ever

Jasper couldn't stop grinning. It was Unity Day, and Jasper knew it was all just a nice story, but this was the first Unity Day he didn't have to spend in a metal tube in space. They weren't currently under attack, they'd made contact with the Ark, and Monty had made his "Unity Juice". Jasper was actually singing as he went through the crowd of thirsty delinquents, pouring moonshine into their cups. By the time he was done with the first round, he was pretty tipsy himself. It wasn't as nice a high as weed, but it was a hundred times better than those nuts they'd all eaten the other day. Jasper had come to snuggling a stick, with vague memories of panic and of Octavia giving the stick to him after he'd told her he loved her.

She hadn't said it back. But now wasn't the time to think about that because today was going to be the best Unity Day ever.

By the time the sun started to set, everyone was in party mode. Almost everyone, anyway, and Jasper was pleasantly drunk, but not sloppy. Just happy. He saw Rune--that was his name, right?--in the crowd and noticed he wasn't currently drinking. That just couldn't stand. Jasper found an extra cup and filled it before topping off his own, and walked over to Rune. He vaguely knew him from Farm station, but they hadn't interacted much on the Ark. And on the ground, Jasper hadn't had a lot of down time.

"Don't tell me you're not partaking," he said when he reached Rune. He offered the cup to Rune in an overly grandiose fashion with a little bow, grinning the whole time. "Rune, right?" He didn't offer his own name. He'd become something of a camp celebrity briefly--something he'd indulged in until it bit him in the ass--so he was pretty sure everyone knew his name

Rune was standing aside, leaning against a tree and watched the drunk people drinking the 'unity juice' Monty had made. Rune never had had alcohol before, like most of the teenagers out here and didn't know how he would react to the stuff Jasper was handing out to everyone. He wondered how much he had to drink before he was drunk, or how less. . . 
He saw Jasper approaching him and pushed himself away from the tree, while he tried to stand as nonchalant as he could. Rune saw the two cups in his hands and knew directly that one of them was for him. He shook his had at Jaspers question and chuckled while he took over the cup from the guy in front of him. He looked at the mixture inside the cup and looked up at Jasper when he said his name. 
"You guessed it right," he grinned and took a sip of the 'unity juice'. The moment it went down his esophagus he felt a bit of a burning and coughed. "My god, what percentage is this stuff?" He asked and looked at the, he could say already tipsy or even drunk, Jasper and took another sip. The same thing as before happened and at this point he chose to drink the whole cup at once. Shivers came down his spine and he laughed. What should Jasper think of him right now. Rune must've looked like a weirdo just now.

Jasper snorted when Rune coughed, and then couldn't stop himself from laughing when Rune asked asked about the proof of the moonshine before downing it. Clearly, Rune wasn't much of a drinker. "I have no idea," Jasper admitted. "But Clarke's been using it to sterilize things for medical use, and Monty doesn't mess around, so probably high." He lifted his glass in a tiny cheers before taking another sip. He should probably slow down, but Jasper didn't really have a ton of self-control when it came to drugs.

"Trust me, this stuff is waaaaaaaay better than the hooch I made on the Ark. That stuff was hard to swallow." He made a face. He'd only made hooch a few times, and once he and Monty discovered the glory of marijuana, he'd stopped making it entirely.

He held his cup over toward Rune's, in silent offer to pour some of his drink into Rune's cup. If he'd know Rune would slam the first glass, he might've brought the whole jug.

Rune looked at Jasper who was laughing hard. He got a little blush on his cheeks and looked into the cup. He felt a bit light headed already and wondered what Monty did with it. He just had one cup. One!
He listened to what Jasper had to say and raised an eyebrow. That might be the reason he already felt light headed. Okay, maybe he should keep it to one cup, before he loses himself in the world of being drunk. 
"Well," Rune said and saw Jasper bringing his cup to his own and he bit his lip. "I think I've had enough. . ." he doupted and he looked at the two cups. "Okay, maybe a little more then," he consented and held out his cup to Jasper's. He was wondering if the taste would become better if he took more of it. 
"How are you doing after everything that happened?" Rune asked sincerely and he looked up at Jasper.

Jasper chuckled when Rune changed his mind about not wanting more to drink, and tipped his glass to pour abut half of his own drink into Rune's cup. "I am feeling no pain today, man. None at all," he said, pressing his fingers to his chest over his still healing spear wound without thinking about it. His words were true. The moonshine had his body warm and pleasantly numb. "S'how I like it."

He glanced around the crowd of happy delinquents, laughing and playing drinking games, and raised his arms to indicate the crowd. "I mean, look at this. Why not have fun today? Take advantage of the down time. It's not gonna last, but it's nice."

Rune looked at how Jasper poured half of his own drink into his cup and smiled at him. He listened to what he said and saw what he did. He wanted to pull Jaspers hand away from the stil healing wound, but Jasper was not feeling anything. This stuff must be very strong if it even numbs pain. 
"That's great," Rune said and he took a sip of the cup, being more frugal with the liquid in it. He looked around when Jasper told him to have fun, because it's not going to last forever. Rune nodded and took another sip. He was getting used to the taste, atleast, he didn't really taste it anymore. He felt pleasant and giggled. 
"You're right, let's have fun. We're free down here and there's no one to tell us what to do or not," Rune said and he looked at Jasper, while he bumped his own cup against Jasper's "Cheers on- I don't know. . . This!" He drank from his own cup and looked at the guy in front of him.

"To Unity Day!" Jasper said as Rune tapped their cups together, and then took a long sip of his drink. He glanced around the camp, wondering if they should go join in the festivities of other people, or make their own fun. After a moment considering it, he decided they should do something on their own. Everyone looked like they were playing drinking games, and Jasper suspected Rune was a lightweight. He wanted Rune to have fun, but Jasper didn't want to wind up having to carry him to wherever he was sleeping and put him to bed.

"So what brought you down here with the rest of us criminals?" Jasper asked. "You look about as much like a hardened criminal as Monty," he joked. He knew he didn't look like a hardened criminal either, but he'd learned how to use a gun on the ground. He'd killed people. Gounders, anyway.

The world spun slightly, and he abruptly sat on the ground, cross-legged.

Rune watched Jasper taking a long sip of his drank and smiled. Rune never felt himself so calm and kind of liked the feeling the drug gave him. For one moment he didn't think about his parents and it made him feel good.
He looked at Jasper as he asked him what he did and chuckled a bit of the, sort of, compliment het got from the guy next to him. Rune had seen Monty a few times and knew what Jasper ment. Monty didn't really look like a criminal, but either did Jasper.
"Well. . ." Rune scratched the back of his head and shocked a bit when Jasper randomly sat on the ground. Then Rune laughed and took place next to him.
"Weak legs?" he asked grinning and he looked at Jasper. "But you're right, I do not look like a criminal and actually, I don't even feel like one, to be honest," Rune began and he looked into the cup he held between his hands.
"There was this guy from Arrow and, let me say, we hated each other. We bumped into each when I got around the corner and began to push me and said some really nasty things about me and my family, so I pushed him back. . ." Rune sighed. "He then tried to tackle me, but I - I stil don't know how I did it - got his leg with my hand and pulled on it, so he tripped and fell on his back-" He looked at Jasper. "He nudged his head into a, I don't exactly know what it was, very sharp object and was bleeding hard. I tried to help him, but he pushed me away and in a panic I fled to my appartment. I told my parents about it and ten minutes later the guards rushed into our appartment and took me. . . Someone indicated me and I was charged for murder. I've been in the Sky box for around two months before we got send down here." He looked into the horizon. "Be honest with me. Did I kill him? I mean, He didn't even want my help, so it's not my fauls he died, right?"

Jasper listened as Rune told his story. It was a bit of a buzz kill story, but Jasper had asked. It was funny; before on the Ark, in the Skybox, Jasper would have avoided people who were in for acts of violence. But now? Jasper had killed too. He'd had too. So he wasn't particularly bothered that Rune was in for murder. Jasper had intentionally killed people. Grounders, anyway.

"Man, that's rough," he said, taking another sip of his drink and frowning. "I think... I know on Earth, before what happened, they had laws that differentiated stuff like that. Like, they might say, 'yeah, you killed that guy, but you didn't mean to, so you get a lighter sentence.'" He shrugged. "Not on the Ark. They didn't care. Motives weren't important." He paused for a moment, then added, "The Ark was messed up."

Earth was too, actually. Just for different reasons.

"But at least now we get to live," he said. For how long, who knew? But they were alive right now. And drinking Monty's moonshine. The thought brought a small smile back to Jasper's face.

Rune looked at Jasper when he told him that back on earth, the laws were different and he nodded. Yeah, the Ark didn't care how much you did. Even stealing makes you go to the sky box. The Ark was sure messed up, but earth wasn't any better. In fact, earth had given them enemies who wanted them dead, no matter what. But as long as they stayed in camp, they're save. Right? 
"You're right," Rune said. "The Ark was messed up, but it's more that the law was. Jaha was only following it, but he could've changed it. But who am I to talk about it," Rune said and he looked at Jasper as the guy said that they could live now. He watched him sip from his cup and Rune did the same. 
"I wonder if we can have peace with the Grounders one day and really live," Rune wondered. "I think we can. I'm sure about it." He smiled and he lay down on his back. He looked at the sky which was a little cloudy. He still felt light headed but it felt pleasand and relaxing. Rune knew if he would close his eyes right now, he'd fell asleep. 
"How did you and Monty get in the sky box?" Rune knew Jasper and Monty went to the sky box at the same time, but never heard the story about them. He was curious about it and didn't really know what else to talk about.

Jasper held his tongue on the peace idea. He wasn't as convinced that they could have peace as Rune was. But today was Unity Day. And it was going to be a good one. Jasper was not going to waste this drunken buzz on talking abut scary or depressing things.

He watched Rune lie back and debated joining him. Could he lie down and not fall asleep? Better not risk it. He turned to face Rune a little better, though. "Basically I trusted Monty to be sneaky, and he wasn't," he said, shrugging. "We were growing weed on the Ark, and we had to borrow some of the medicinal stuff, and I let Monty do the borrowing." He laughed faintly. Monty had apologized a hundred times, and Jasper wasn't upset about it anymore, but it was still fun to tease Monty about. "He got caught, and we both went down. Too bad they caught us for that, instead of something less serious. I got up to all kinds of stuff I shouldn't have."

There was a short silence between both boys and Rune stared into the sky. He noticed Jasper was not laying back too, but could guess why so. So he decided to lean on his elbows and listened to what Jasper had to say. 
Rune heard Jasper laughing in the middle of the story and shook his head, while he chuckled. Drugs. How come he hadn't thought about that. They even made the Moonshine, well Monty did, but both took credit of it. 
"But how come that you were caught too?" Rune asked. "Did Monty turn you in, or did they find out?" As Rune could tell, Jasper had peace with it but he wondered what happened if he wasn't caught and only Monty would end up in the Sky box. 
"And how did they find out? I mean, did they caught you two because of missing herbs, or did they got it on camera or what?" Rune didn't notice he had asked three questions already, but he was really curious on what exactly happened that his brain was having a sort of error and made him ask so much.

"Monty forgot about one camera," Jasper said. "But he didn't turn me it. He would never do that." Monty had felt guilty for a long time about what had happened. He might still feel guilty, but Jasper didn't think so. They were free on the ground now, and no one could float them. Not to mention, they had bigger problems now.

Jasper drew a deep breath, letting it out in a sigh as he looked up at the sky. "The guards came after Monty, but when they finally found him in the Starboard Window Bay, I was with him. And we were baked out of our gourds playing a game." He looked back down at Rune. "Took me a little while to even understand what was happening, but the high wore of pretty damn quick after that."
