salvation comes at a price
Marcus sat in what he assumed was now the chancellor's office. Commander? He wasn't sure what Octavia would be calling herself, but everyone now followed the young girl. He sat in deep thought about the changes in the young lady from when he had first meet her and now. She had been a small ball of rage, jumping at any reason to fight and prove herself. Even before that he knew she had been a quite girl, who had stayed under a floor for 16 years. Now they had placed all their lives in her hands. He trusted and valued Indra, but he also knew that where Indra taught her strength, he needed to teach her other things. Which was why he wasn't going to back down, and was going to force his way into her council. It wouldn't be hard--the youngest Blake seemed to trust and respect him. It was the other Blake he wondered about at time, more so recently.
Hearing footstep, he pulled out of his mind and looked at the screens before him that was supposed to tell them information about the outside world. So far they were blank. Everything was blank. No word on the others, if they had made it to the Ark, if they were alive. He had Wick working on it, but whatever was wrong was wrong with the outside--where they could not go to fix anything. Not for years yet.

Things were conflicting down in the bunker. Clarke, in a stroke of luck that she only understood now, had followed a gut feeling that told her she had to stay with the people in the bunker. Not for them needing her, but for something about her. She knew what it was now. It had caused her to hole up in her bunk for an entire day, not wanting to see anyone as she tried to figure out what the hell she should do now. She still had no idea. The thing was, she needed an ally in this. Or she couldn't get through this. She couldn't, anyway. She felt way too young for it.
Somehow her mind told her to trust one man. Though she wasn't entirely sure how he'd take the news. She found him around the controls, staring at the lack of response from the outside. Clarke had come to terms with it. For some simple facts. It was like on the Ark. Just different. "Feels weird to be blind to the ground again, doesn't it?" She asked him. "The others are probably still blind to the ground, too. Nobody has installed a satellite up there. And even then. The death wave probably destroyed all transmitters up there. There is next to no way to get contact up unless we send someone outside." And that would be a death sentence to anyone - but her. Though with her news, there was no way she was going outside.
"I need... to tell you something. And I need your advice."

salvation comes at a price
Marcus looked up as Clarke entered, and he nodded his head at her words. It was odd, but it was unsettling. He wanted to know what was happening out there. Not just on the ground but back on the Ark. He was worried because Raven had said that A.L.I.E. had gone back up to the ring, and now he had Bellamy, Raven, Monty, Harper and Murphy up there, plus two grounders with Emori and and Echo. He worried that the mixture of people, knowing that the history between some of them weren't positive, and recent evens had made it worse. Bellamy and Echo had a dangerous past, and one that Kane didn't always understand. How could he? He knew that Bellamy had raised a sister, and Kane had never raised anyone. The cloest he had come was to Callie's daughter, Lilly. In recent years, maybe Clarke.
Azgeda and Bellamy--specially the one who had tried to kill his sister twice, worried him. He had to trust their need to survive out weighed their history. "It will be a while before we can get out there to work on communication." He admitted, but didn't seem pleased by the only choice he had, "until then we are forced to wait." He stood up more as Clarke spoke something that shifted his focus away from the monitors to her. "I need... to tell you something. And I need your advice." He gestured tot he chair before, his days of being the Chancellor still evident in his demeanor, even if it was softened by Clarke being the woman he loves' daughter. "I am here to help in anyway i can."

For a moment she stared at the seat, blinking, wondering if he knew. Slowly but surely her mind caught up, reminding her that this was Kane, a caretaker, a man raised to be a gentleman, one who made sure peace between Skaikru and the others lasted and the one person who didn't blink at her decision to not come with the others was Kane. Now she finally had a semblance of an idea what made her stop and change her mind. She knew it for a fact why she had stayed back now, why this feeling was there. And it scared the crap out of her. While she knew she had been in a dangerous position, Clarke knew she was in one that might cost her life ultimately. As she sat down, she was aware of the fact that she was shaking, partly from nerves.
She wrung her hands together, bit her lips, her behavior clearly showing that she worried and that her mind in that blonde head was at work. He was the one she could trust with the news. He wouldn't use them against her, because he loved her mother. Because he wanted peace. Because he was simply Marcus Kane. And so as she worried, only one conclusion came to her, only one way to tell him. "I'm pregnant." She said then. It was like ripping off the band-aid. For him and her. Her nerves fell from her, like a heavy weight lifted from her instantly. Someone knew. "I made more than one test - myself, in secret. I am pregnant. Mom doesn't know. I..." How was she to explain that one. "I wanted your advice first."

salvation comes at a price
Marcus watched as she stared at the seat for a moment but didn't take it. He walked around the desk, so nothing was between them just as she finally pushed out the words. "I'm pregnant." He paused in his steps, and his face showed the surprise that he felt. It wasn't what he had expected the younger woman to tell him. He had expected this to be about poltics or some threat to their people. Not something this personal. "Mom doesn't know." Her mother didn't know. She was sure, and she was unsure. He moved to lean on the desk, with his arms folding over his chest.
He was unsure why she came to him first, but he could gather a guess. Her father was dead, and she was worried about telling her mother. With himself and her mother growing close, she was seeking out a father figure. He felt a tightening in his chest the knowledge she might see him this way. Which was what guided his words to her, "I think you should tell your mother," he told her, his voice soft and understanding rather then a command. "And I think that you should use these years we have in here to stop trying to fight so hard." Rest. Be a young mother and not someone with so much pressure. "Let Octavia and the council take care of the politics, and just work on being a mother." He wasn't sure if that was what she wanted to hear, but it was what she needed to hear. "Who is the father?"

Not fighting. Not bothering with politics was easier said than done. Especially with this child in her. She knew she had to tell her mother and she would. But even now as she knew she had to tel him first, she knew it was only for the best to do so. In many ways. She did't know enough about Azgeda to have an idea on how they might react to it. She didn't want to cause an uproar or tension between their people. Maybe it should remain a secret. But what if it couldn't? Clarke stared at him. She wished it was this easy, to just take a step back and focus on being pregnant and then a baby - though the later would probably be very easy. Babies had a way of demanding attention that even Clarke reacted to in the odd moments she had held a baby in her life before.
"That's kinda hard." And she guessed he would not necessarily guess why. She had never made it a big thing. She had never even talked to many about what she had with the father of this kid. And now it was too late. He was dead. Because of her. Because she had acted on her own and had caused a chain reaction that resulted in his death. It was only then that she realized what an important ally and friend and in many ways partner she lost. With or without the child on the way. "It's complicated." That was probably the understatement of the day. "This kid might turn political." She just hoped it would not. She hoped it wouldn't cause uproar. Maybe it could be a source of peace, too. It was her hope, but her gut told her something else. With the stinging in her eyes, though, she knew the pregnancy hormones were in full force already. She was on the verge of crying already. And it was the pain of what she had done and the loss.
"He's dead." If only she could stop there. But if Kane was to be her ally, if she truly wanted his help in the delicate situation she once again created for herself, he needed to know it all. Hell his people might even accuse her of being the cause of his death. "It's Roan."

salvation comes at a price
Marcus awaited her answer and he could tell that she was still holding something back. Clarke did that a lot, where she would try to hold back as much as she could and deal with things herself. He didn't want her doing that as a mother, as she was still just a kid in many ways--even though she had not been a kids for a while now. Not since they had locked her up to keep her silent. "This kid might turn political." He found himself frowning at that, not quite understanding what it meant. "It's Roan."
Marcus was glad he was mostly sitting, because that might have made him unsteady on his feet. Roan. The king of Azgeda, or was until recently. The eldest son of Nia, the queen who had killed many of their people. Lifting his hand, he rubbed over the bottom part of his face while trying to think about what this means. "Who knows about you two?" He asked, trying to see if it was possible to keep this quite until they had the chance to make better choices. If Azgeda wanted to claim the baby, then it would up stir a lot within their ranks. However, they were one people now. An heir might mean less. "For now, I think the less people to know is better. We need to see how everyone settles here before deciding on our best course of action." Because to keep the baby alive it might be better to not tell anyone, and claim the baby was completely Skikru.

Clarke now was glad she didn't make much of a big thing of it. She had been unsure of it at first. It was casual, if anything and then, when she thought they might just get somewhere shit hit the fan literally. Her people betrayed him. And then she did. This all caused them to not get far in this. She had had feelings for him - that was why she was mourning him still - but it never got that serious before he died. So there was only a handful of people that knew. "I suspect Mom knew." She pointed out. The deal of making room for Roan and only Roan had been too suspicious for her mother not to know. And she guessed with this knowledge Kane might guess the same, too. "His most trusted advisors knew, too. It's one or two men. I suspect Echo knew, but there is no way of figuring that out." As Kane knew. About Echo she couldn't be sure. She knew of two men, perhaps three to know of them. It was part of them making sure Azgeda wouldn't touch her unless specifically stated by Roan himself.
"I agree." It was simple really. The less people knew, the less people would think the kid was Roans, the less potential uproar it could cause. And uproar was not a good thing. "I don't even intend to tell many people about my little dot until I can't deny it anymore. You, Mom, maybe Niylah and Octavia." People she really cared about without question. All the others weren't even in the bunker. It wasn't many people she would want to entrust with that knowledge. Mostly she wanted to keep it to herself, because she was still mourning, not just Roan. "I don't know how to do this, Kane." She finally admitted. She really didn't. She had an idea how to take care of a baby. But to be a mother? How would she ever tell the kid of Roan? How would she be able to look at the kid without being reminded of what she did to its father? "I'm having a kid all by myself. Without a father for it. And... how is it possible to be so conflicted and still love something so damn tiny already? It's a dot!" Marcus Kane

salvation comes at a price
Marcus knew that there was much they needed to talk about, but right now he only planned reply to the the last few things she said, because until she told her mother, he didn't want to press her into making any choices about the future. Right now what he could help with her, was accepting the situation that she found herself in. He could help put her mind at ease, and then they could all move forward together.
"There are many things in life that we don't expect." He reminded her, lowering his arms to rest them on the edge of the desk that he was sitting on. "Ever since you landed on Earth, you've had to be someone. That moment you went from being a kid locked up for knowing too much, to one of the leaders of 100 rowdy kids being hunted. It wasn't easy, but you did. Right now you have a chance to be someone with less on her shoulders. To only worry for one, and not so many. I know it's scary, but you have your mother to help you. You have me too if you need anything." Kane thought about how he would have loved to be a father, once. It was one of his regrets for putting work first for so long. There was a few who he had taken under his wing over the years, and thought of as surrogates in a way, but he knew he wasn't their father. Lilly, Clarke, and especially the Blakes. He had taken their mother from them, after all.

She had him, too. That was a great relief in a way he probably didn't expect. Clarke couldn't help the smirk that was spreading on her face as she gently placed a hand on her stomach, where the little dot was growing and would grow into a full baby - or at least she hoped that would be the case. Because well, she didn't want to go through that loss even though she couldn't imagine it at this point. She guessed it would be horrible. The grin felt much better, much lighter.
"I would hope so. I mean with the way it looks, Kane, you are all but that little dots grandpa. Maybe at one point you will be just that. Grandpa to that little one." And then there was something that she had barely asked herself: Where did she stand with him dating her mom. She found the grin not faltering for a moment, but turning into a soft smile, warm. He made her mom happy. He kept her safe. He was her greatest ally and closest adviser. He loved her. And her mom needed that. "I wouldn't mind it - having you as stepfather."

"--you are all but that little dots grandpa. Maybe at one point you will be just that. Grandpa to that little one." He froze at that and looked at her with surprise, not sure how to react to that. It wasn't an unwelcome thought, but he had not thought that far into his and Abby's relationship yet. He loved her, but he knew that she would need time to adjust to everything before he pressed for more, and even if he wanted too they always seemed to be dealing with life-and-death situations!
"I wouldn't mind it - having you as stepfather." Her words warmed him, and he found himself smiling at her, knowing that he had always wanted a child but had never been able to do it. He would welcome her in that role too, even without Abby as his wife. "I umm," he tried to think of what to say, "That would," but words failed him for once in his life. "I can't speak of what might happen between you're mother and me, but I hope you know that I would be honored to take any role in your life." He said, reaching out to brush her hair back, as a father might. It would be easy for her to hate him. He had not been the one to float her father, but he had not stopped it. Yet she was welcoming him into this role, and he was humbled.

It was a simple gesture. Yet it was one that reminded her so much of her father, Jake Griffin. It was soft and caring and it reminded her of everything that was wrong and right with the world at the same time. Clarke had been through hell and back. She had so much weight on her shoulder. In part she felt like she could let it go. In part it felt like he would be there for her and help her let it go. She was having a baby. Life was literally finding a way even as the world ended.
"I think we're beyond the point of only limiting our family to blood relations. They seem to get lost more and more." And she didn't want to lose the connection she had. Her kid needed a big family to protect him or her. Chances were that the next conflict might affect her. Clarke moved forward, leaning against Kane, in what came close to a hug. She wished they could find out about the others. "I'm going to need a crib... and I have no idea where to find one down here." She actually managed a small smile.
