Cara had never been afraid of the woods. She didn’t jump at every sound or see enemies behind every tree. But the sight of the dear carcass made her hair stand on end. The meat and bones seemed to have been ripped clean away with no claw marks to show how it had been done. And then there were the teeth marks on the throat. They were human. Reaper.
Standing slowly to her feet, Cara’s eyes searched the trees as she quietly drew her sword. This was not good. Cara might be a fierce warrior, but reapers were demons. If this one was large enough or hungry enough, she would be hard pressed to escape if it found her. Better not to let that happen.
She resumed her journey at the quickest pace she dared, taking care to make as little noise as possible. Her eyes searched the trees as her ears strained against the breeze. This was not a good time to be alone. But the emperor had wanted this mission kept quiet, and it had made sense to send Cara alone despite the great distance. She was less likely to be detected that way. Now though she was starting to wish she had pushed for a companion.
A rustle in the trees told her was no longer alone. Maybe it was a deer. Not likely, but hopefully. Cara paused briefly, listening for some indication. Silence. She was about to move on when a large form suddenly came hurtling out of the trees behind her. Cara spun on her heel with her sword up. If this reaper wanted a fight, she was happy to oblige. But something stopped her from engaging. There was something about the dirty form. Something familiar. The reaper shifted, and the light sifting through the trees illuminated the side of his face. Cara’s veins ran cold as recognition set in. It couldn’t be. "Aro?"
Aro
