Jasper felt better than he could ever remember feeling since having been impaled by a spear shortly after landing on Earth. Months of near constant pain had taken their toll, and when the City of Light had been taken from him, he'd considered ending his own life. The only reason he hadn't was Monty's promise that they would get through things together. But now... Now the world was ending. Again. And Jasper had been done fighting for a long time now... which unfortunately put him and his best friend on opposite pages again. While it hurt that Monty wasn't coming with him now, Jasper had said his goodbyes with a fond smile. It felt like a weight had been lifted from him. He could live now, with absolute certainty that any pain he might encounter for what was left of his life would end soon. He knew his fate, and he could make the best of what was left without pressure.
He'd managed to get a rover for himself and the small group of people joining him to live out the rest of their days with wild abandon, experiencing everything they could, everything that was left to experience. He'd been told they couldn't have any weapons, but Jasper didn't want any anyway. He'd also been told Bellamy was coming with them as a guard, which didn't make any sense to Jasper, but with any luck, maybe he could get Bellamy to actually experience the best Earth had to offer too, before he died as well.
Jasper drove the rover to the dropship, followed by a group on foot. They could party there one more night before setting off to explore the parts of the world they hadn't seen yet. He blasted Maya's iPod from the rover, loud enough for the crowd behind the vehicle to hear, handing over the steering wheel to the person in the passengers seat so he could pop out of the top of the rover to shout-sing when R.E.M.'s "It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)". He felt the vehicled jerk to the side, then right itself, but he managed to get everyone excited. "Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn! World serves its own needs! Dummy, serve your own needs!" And on and on. "Uh oh, this means no fear, cavalier! Renegade, steer clear! A tournament, a tournament, a tournament of lies! Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives, and I decline!" He'd been listening to the song for months and knew all the lyrics (even if some of them seemed to reference old world things he'd never learned about), but by the time the song was over, at least half the crowd was singing along to the chorus. "It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it. It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fiiiiiiiine!" He didn't care what the noise they made attracted, and no one else seemed to either.
He was still humming the tune to himself later that night, half drunk after spending a while playing drinking games, like they had their first days on the ground. He'd have to make more moonshine later, but for now, they were good. He'd climbed onto the roof of the rover and laid back on his back, staring up at the stars, taking them in. There was excited chatter and laughter all around him, and he knew for a fact a few people had found some privacy for... things. Things Jasper fully intended to get into himself soon. This was exactly how he wanted to go out, on his own terms.
After a while, he pushed himself to the edge of the rover until his head dangled off the side, smiling as he looked around at his upside down friends. When his eyes found Bellamy, looking decidedly less happy than everyone else, Jasper grinned and gave him a small salute and a wink, but the salute dislodged the brim of his hat. He reached for it, but didn't catch it in time before it fell to the ground.
Laughing at himself, he rolled over and clumsily jumped down from the rover, having to brace his hands on the ground to keep from falling as he landed and tipped forward dangerously. He dusted off his hat and tugged it back on, before grabbing his cup of moonshine from the roof of the rover and walking over to Bellamy. "What I don't understand is why they sent you with us," he said, as he got close enough to be heard. "You don't look happy to be here, and we don't really care if we die tonight, soooooo..." He grinned as he stopped in front of Bellamy, and held his cup out so Bellamy could drink from it if he wanted. "Are you the fun police?" He liked Bellamy. Honestly, he loved Bellamy. He had for a while, and deep down, he was glad Bellamy was with them. Maybe, just maybe, he could get Bellamy to put down his gun and join the festivities.
