This is my Fight Song--TAKE BACK MY LIFE SONG, PROVE I'M ALRIGHT SONGThere was no doubting the fact that things had changed in camp drastically. Arriving on Earth, everyone had been excited, thrilled and ready for a life of freedom after having little to no hope of surviving past their eighteenth birthday. Harper had definitely been one of the excited ones, and in a way, she was still immensely hopeful about Earth, just not about who else might live on it. Grounders. The word had done nothing but leave everyone in the camp feeling tense, a threat that everyone was now worried about, although many were keeping those worries to themselves. In a lot of ways, things hadn't changed. People still did their thing, people still smiled and laughed but there was an undertone of worry and a new fence being built around their camp. That was definitely one of the biggest visuals to show the change in things.
This change only seemed to fuel the people side of Harper. If there was one thing she loved to do, it was to converse with others. A people person through and through and one with little reserve about talking to anyone. Usually she stuck to her own friends, those she had known up in the Ark, but tonight Harper was stepping out of that bubble. A young girl, almost too young to be here on Earth, sat alone that night as everyone ate around the fire. Harper had been sitting closer to the flames, shivering in the cool winds that cut through the night but when she noticed the younger girl, a part of her decided that she would move and go talk to her. It wasn't something she usually did but honestly, no one needed to feel alone with the danger they now faced and the girl definitely looked... afraid? There was something to her that did look like that.
Finishing her bite of food, Harper stood up, explaining to her friends that she was going to sit with someone else -- sarcastic cracks were made towards her, of course. She walked over to the younger girl, finding herself unsure of whether to introduce herself or sit down first but quickly decided on the latter. If she sat down there would probably be less chance of her being told to go away. Harper had no idea where the girl would even want company. "Hey, I'm Harper," she greeted, a genuine smile on her face. "What's your name?" She took another bite of her food as she waited for a reply, getting comfortable on the seat. Seeing the girl closer up, she seemed to look even younger than Harper had been thinking before. Harper couldn't imagine anyone that young would deal well with everything that was happening. smalldelinquent || First starter for ya, Dragon! Let me know if you need anything changed (: |

Despite being given freedom down on the ground, Charlotte couldn’t shake off the fear that clinged to her constantly-- almost shadowing her actions. She couldn’t stop the scene of her parents’ death from replaying in her head, each second constantly being rewinded. However, the weight had been lifted slightly once their days here grew more.. lively. Ironically, the reveal of Grounders had kept everyone peering around the camp and the woods surrounding them. While everyone had gone on to participate in building the fence separating them from the woods, Maybe it had been her age, or something else, but Charlotte had been kept busy with other meager task. Her participation had been very little when it came to the fence. Either way, she wasn’t certain if things were better this way. The visual the fence provided her with wasn’t the greatest one. It made far too simple to remember what was going on beyond the gate. They could be watched at any moment.
With the addition of the fence, the twelve year old found herself closing herself off once more, uncertain of how to go about things. Being the youngest hadn’t given her much opportunities to connect with everyone else. Not when they were a majority of them were her elders by three or more years. That had been her constant dilemma ever since arriving to the ground. It was with that thought in mind that Charlotte had kept herself to a more lonely part of the fire, her food lingering in her hands. Huddling closer to the warmth the fire provided, she took another bite of her food, unaware of who’s attention she had caught. Instead, she had focused on finishing up the remainder of her meal.
For a moment, Charlotte had fallen under the belief the older girl had only sat beside her to take in the warmth the fire provided from the chilly wind. It wasn’t until her curious gaze flickered over to her that she heard her greeting, accompanied with the genuine smile on her lips. While being talked to was a bit surprising, it was hard to prevent the twelve year old from offering a small smile back. “Hi, Harper.” Charlotte greeted, after getting over her initial surprise. Bringing her jacket closer to her, she turned her attention back to Harper. It was nice being able to talk to someone, even if they were older than her. “..--I’m Charlotte.” She spoke up seconds later, tempted to ask more. To find something to make more conversation with. “It’s cold tonight, isn’t it?” Charlotte pipped up, ignoring the lingering nervous tone in her voice.

This is my Fight Song--TAKE BACK MY LIFE SONG, PROVE I'M ALRIGHT SONGThere was relief in seeing the small smile that appeared on the younger girl's face. It eased the uncertainty that she had held about whether it was the right decision to actually come and talk to the girl or not. She had looked lonely and scared and she was so obviously younger than most of the other delinquents there on Earth but Harper had no way of nothing whether her company would be appreciated. For all she knew the girl could have wanted to be alone but she was smiling now and was yet to make any sort of indication -- verbal or non-verbal -- that she wanted Harper to leave her be. So Harper found herself getting more comfortable, her own smile only growing a little bit more as the girl introduced herself. Charlotte. "Nice to meet you, Charlotte." Looking down at Charlotte, Harper decided the name fit her well, in that way that names did fit some people.
It was difficult not to notice the way that Charlotte seemed to be trying to take more and more warmth from her jacket. It was cold. It felt freezing and the breeze did nothing but cut through all their clothing as cold as ice. Even Harper found herself shivering as well but resisted the urge to pull her own jacket tighter around her. If this was what weather was like on Earth, Harper wanted to see if she could get used to it, at least to a degree. She knew that it was going into winter, she had overheard that from someone else, so that meant that nights would only grow colder. Unless they started killing animals with fur, they wouldn't really have anything to keep them warm. When Charlotte then mentioned the coldness of the night, Harper's smile turned amused. "It really is," Harper said, laughing softly as another breeze came and caused her to shiver again.
This time she did pull her jacket around herself tighter, unable to deal with just how cold it felt. Once that wave of cold passed, Harper held her hand out toward the fire hoping to gain some sort of warmth from it. It was a good spot that they were in, it was just that the winds didn't allow the heat of the fire to make much of a difference. "It never got this cold on the Ark." It was temperature controlled so there was no reason for it to get too cold. It sounded like paradise in that moment, to not have to deal with the weather of Earth that had already shown to be so varied. "You've got a good spot here, though." Harper made sure to keep her voice as upbeat as possible, not blind to the nervousness that sat in Charlotte's voice when she spoke. There was no way of knowing whether it was Harper or just everything causing it but Harper could at least try and make her feel comfortable. |

words: tag: @harpermcintyre . notes: ah, I figured it would be a good idea to mention a bit more about her nightmares. |
Fear had gradually become something that Charlotte had grown accustomed to. Even with the freedom that the ground offered, her mind was still heavily occupied with thoughts of her parents and Chancellor Jaha. Her nightmares had a way of burrowing itself in her mind, despite being away from the very place it grew in. Honestly, the twelve year old wasn't certain she'd never grow accustomed to the ground, especially when the threat of Grounders was so high recently. All she wanted was to find something to keep her head far away from her nightmares. Fortunately, that had been the moment an older blonde had approached her. Initially, Charlotte was surprised by the sudden company but she didn't have to the heart to push away the only company she had now. It was extremely rare to get any company nowadays. With that thought in mind, she couldn't prevent the smile that was slowly growing wider. "It's nice to meet you too." Charlotte quickly pipped up, hoping to soothe any rudeness she might have shown.
With the cold weather, it was hard for Charlotte not to bundle up with her jacket, trying to gather as much warmth as she could. Considering they were living on the ground now, she knew she had to learn to adjust to it. While she knew that simple fact, she still had some difficulties actually trying to adjust down here. The weather was one thing she hadn't dealt with beforehand. It only took a quick glance beside her to see Harper was also pulling her jacket closer to her. The cold weather was affecting everyone down here. With the cold breeze passing through, she kept her hands in her pockets as tried to cling to whatever heat she could presently. "It's.. so different from the Ark.." Charlotte trailed off, eyebrows furrowing slightly at the scattered thoughts in her head. At that thought, the twelve year old saw no reason to keep quiet about her curiosity. "Are you getting used to this place..?" She questioned, after mulling over her question.
Any signs of nervousness Charlotte showed in her voice had been caused to her own uncertainty of being down in the ground. Considering she didn't have a lot of people to talk to, the loneliness she felt had been eating her up for awhile now. Maybe it was the fact she was the youngest that made the others uncertain of how to interact with her. Either way she didn't have many people to talk to down her. At the latter of Harper's words, Charlotte's mood seemingly brightened up at the thought. "It's a lot closer to the fire over here." She mused, lips pursued in a brief smile. "-- Warmer too." Then again, that might have been because she was seated close to the fire. Either way, her mind wasn't focused on that. No, she found herself focusing more on the current conversation with Harper.

This is my Fight Song--TAKE BACK MY LIFE SONG, PROVE I'M ALRIGHT SONGIt was a relief to see Charlotte's smile growing larger and to see that she was growing more comfortable in Harper's company. Harper had been a bit worried that her company might have been unwanted and that maybe Charlotte just hadn't had the guts to tell her to leave her alone but it was seeming less and less like that by the second. The both of them were growing more comfortable and the awkwardness of a new conversation was fading. Even Charlotte's voice sounded more cheery, less unsure and less nervous. If only the fact that they were both feeling cold could be fixed just as easily, but Harper knew that it would take them a very long time to properly adjust to the weather and honestly, she was sure they would need warmer clothes eventually anyway. The weather would likely get a lot colder than it already was and pulling jackets closer around themselves would only work to a point.
Harper could only nod at Charlotte's words, knowing just how true they were. Earth was nothing like the Ark at all and even with everything they were taught about Earth, what it was like and how to survive on it, Harper didn't really think they had been prepared for it in any way. Not for the weather, that was for sure, but for a lot of other stuff as well. For grounders and people getting speared. For the fear and home sickness that cut deep. Harper knew she much have been frowning a bit when she brought her attention back to Charlotte, pulled out of her own thoughts when the younger girl spoke again. It was a question she expected and Harper tried to pull a smile back onto her face as she worked out how to answer it. "It's better than the Sky Box and being floated," she said. That was better than a honest answer, knowing that Harper didn't honestly know if she was getting used to this place.
It was hard to get used a place when it had already attempted to kill one of your best friends. "Are you getting used to it?" Harper wondered if Charlotte's young age might cause her to be more honest in her answer and she just sort of hoped that she wouldn't start crying. Harper had yet to do that since arriving and she had been making an effort at avoiding others crying as well, not wanting it to cause her to do the same. Honestly, she didn't care if people saw her crying, it was that she wanted to feel some sort of strength in the uncertainty. It seemed Harper's comment on the good spot Charlotte had gotten was a definite way to lighten her mood, and it was good to get Harper's mood back up as well. "It's within the circle of warmth," Harper said, an even lighter tone to her own voice. "At least the days are much nicer."
