Their orders had been simple. They were to go into the village and clear it so that they could use the land to grow crops. If the Grounders wouldn't leave their land willingly, well... they'd do what they had to. Bryan didn't like killing, but it was a necessity in this world. According to Pike, Arkadia would be starving in less than a year. "What would you prefer, die fighting for your home or starve to death?" he'd asked in their council meeting. Bryan knew his answer.
He felt good about the team going to the village. Monty seemed unsure of what they were doing, but he was here anyway. Bellamy was strong, and Pike trusted him. Monroe seemed enthusiastic to be on Pike's council and ready for whatever happened. And Hannah... Hannah was Hannah. Bryan knew and trusted her after the months they'd spent together after Farm station landed. She was strong, and Bryan cared about her a great deal.
When they arrived at the village, Bryan ran in first, used to taking the lead on some of Farm Station's missions. But he realized quickly something was wrong. The village was empty. Before he could decide what that meant, plumes of smoke filled the air, and Bryan turned, looking for his companions when suddenly his lungs started burning.
He turned again, looking for his way out through the smoke, but collapsed to his hands and knees before he could find it. "Hannah!" he called trying to crawl in the direction he thought he'd comes from. "Hannah!" he managed again, with what little air he could manage to push out of his lungs.
