This is my Fight Song--TAKE BACK MY LIFE SONG, PROVE I'M ALRIGHT SONGThere was only a short period of time that they would be spending in Polis before they headed out and started on their journey. Before that happened, Harper wanted to find a chance to talk with Lilly alone. As the guard of the group, it would be good for Harper to be on the same page as her leader, but Harper also wanted to bring up the subject of Jasper. Out of everyone in the group, including the grounders that she didn't know well, Jasper was the person that Harper was the most worried about. He had a history and one that often led to putting himself into dangerous situations that then put others around him in danger. There were countless times he had done that since they had escaped Mount Weather and no matter how much Monty said that he was healing, or how little alcohol Harper could now smell on his breath, she couldn't find it in herself to trust him. Part of her job involved thinking ahead. She wouldn't have thought it would be so difficult to get Lilly alone, however.
The leader was obviously planning to talk to other members of the group and most notably, Harper saw her talking with Jasper. That would hopefully be a good thing, if Lilly was making the effort to speak with Jasper alone then maybe she shared some similar concerns to Harper. It wasn't too long, really, before she was then able to talk to Lilly without interrupting another conversation. It just felt like a long time. Harper could imagine the fear, the slight aching pain still in her head and the general seriousness of the mission ahead was causing time to move in such a slow way. She could only hope that time would move faster as they traveled and that the weeks didn't feel like years. Genuinely feeling happy that it was Lilly as her faction leader, Harper smiled as she walked up to her. "Hey, can we talk before we leave?"
Not waiting for an answer, Harper walked over to an empty side of the room. There were a couple of rusty chairs sitting in the area but Harper stayed standing, leaning her side slightly against the wall. "So, I'm happy I ended up with you." Harper smiled with the words, letting herself enjoy the small bit of joy she could feel. While the trip wouldn't likely end up hell, Harper couldn't imagine it would be a walk in the park either. Her mouth wouldn't likely end up sore from smiling. But after a moment her smile dropped and she quickly glanced over to where Jasper was, making sure he wasn't within range to hear them talking about him. "I wanted to talk to you about Jasper," she began, looking back at Lilly. "We need him with us, obviously, but I'm worried that he'll be an idiot and do something to put us all in danger." And I don't want to worry about that. Lilly would know what she was talking about at least, she had been around enough to see the destructive behaviours Jasper held. "Hey, can we talk before we leave?" Lilly looked up at the words, and gave a polite smile to Harper. She was a bit nervous about what Harper wanted to talk about. "So, I'm happy I ended up with you." She admitted, and smiled; which made Lilly in turn smile a real smile back! That was good to hear! She had wondered if Harper wouldn't like following her, but hearing her honest words made the weight of that leave her. "Thank you, I am glad to know you will be there to have our backs." In honestly, Lilly was surprised that Harper hadn't been picked to lead. She figured though, that when you looked at their skill sets, it made a bit more sense. Lilly wasn't physical in her work, but a thinker. She could do well leading, but not fighting to protect her team. Harper was actively in the guard, and trained well. She would be better at watching both the group members and the outsiders for danger. Not that Lilly worried abut her group. Nyko was a peaceful healer, and Alekay---yeah she might want to warn Harper about him.
She didn't want him getting shot over his humor. Now might be a good time to brace Harper for that. "I wanted to talk to you about Jasper," Lilly was momentartly distracted by that. Thoughts of Alekay leaving her. "Jasper?" She asked, her eyes looking toward him, and back to Harper, with a slightly bend to her brow. Was there was something she didn't know? "We need him with us, obviously, but I'm worried that he'll be an idiot and do something to put us all in danger." She had heard that he had done that a few times when they were on mapping patrols, but not recently. He had been chipped though, so she wasn't sure really what happened then. "He didn't seem erratic when I just talked to him. Is there something I should know?" In truth, Lilly was a bit out of the know. She had only heard parts of the chipped story, and the happenings at Polis. She had used Jasper's distraction to escape and ended up with a group of grounders for the time all that was happening.

This is my Fight Song--TAKE BACK MY LIFE SONG, PROVE I'M ALRIGHT SONGAs much as Lilly's words of encouragement should have been a good thing, Harper felt as if they held a weight to them, leaving her with something more to carry on their journey. From the moment she had heard that she alone would be the guard for the faction, her doubts had started to bubble up and cover any confidence she had held when signing up for the mission. She had thought that she would help to guard a faction, not be the only one around to protect four other people as well as herself. Harper held the training to do such a thing, obviously since she had been placed in the position, but she had failed to protect just herself from chipped Jasper and her confidence in that training had been destroyed from that moment on. All in all, Harper had trouble viewing herself as anything but weak. Lilly held a different view and that was not something that helped Harper.
At the mention of Jasper, Lilly looked confused. It was then that Harper wondered how much Lilly had been around in the past months. Harper had been busy with training and then being in the resistance to Pike - she hadn't had too much time to spend with friends. So Harper was unsure about how a lot of people had been, Lilly included. "He has a past of being erratic," Harper replied. It was difficult not to look over at Jasper when she spoke, to check he was still far from them. If she kept looking over at him, it would just make it obvious who she was talking about. "He was...broken. And he's done other things, in the more recent past, like when he was chipped." Harper did her best then to hide the emotion from her face at the mention of that. "So, I need to keep everyone safe. That means I need to think ahead of what might be a problem and Jasper could definitely be one."

Lilly wasn't sure about what had happened between when she left and now, but the more Harper talked, the more she wondered if she needed to know. Her leadership style wasn't like Kane's but effortlessly seemed to command the respect from others, or Bellamy's who bore so much weight from the group. She believed in team work, and wanted to see everyone helping with every job. She wanted them to come together and really make this work! She wanted to save the world, and keep them all from falling apart while doing it. No one was going to come out of this, worst then then went in! She promised herself that right then and there. Bellamy and Clarke were so serious, and they bore the weight so much--she wasn't going let herself loose her hope and optimism! She was going to bring that to her group!
"He has a past of being erratic," Harper had said, and it wasn't anything Lilly didn't know already. She had seen him durning this. "He was...broken. And he's done other things, in the more recent past, like when he was chipped." That made her pause, and blink in surprise. Something had happened while he was chipped? Something that would affect the group? She had planned to ask everyone to leave everything here, but if this would affect the group then maybe she needed to know? "So, I need to keep everyone safe. That means I need to think ahead of what might be a problem and Jasper could definitely be one." Harper didn't trust Jasper.
That was a surprise. A big one that she hadn't seen coming. Lilly looked over at Jasper, and then back to Harper, knowing that she was letting the silence pull on for a moment. "I know that after everything that happened at mount weather that Jasper did a lot of stupid things." She began, her voice calm and not judging Jasper or Harper in it. Harper should always feel comfortable with trying to talk to her, and she didn't want to dismiss that. "I know that him coming might have risks, but . . . " She trailed off, and reached over to touch Harper's arm, in a show of support. "What happened while he was chipped, was just that. It wasn't Jasper, but the computer woman. My mother didn't seem to care I was her daughter. I heard Raven even tried to kill herself, for the woman. Harper what people did . . . it wasn't them."
Jasper, even in his more reckless state, had saved Raven's life by getting her out of the city after ALIE had made her try to kill herself. He had only ever tried to hurt himself, and when his friends needed him, had done his best to come to their aid. With them taking no booze, and Jasper knowing what was at stake, she was willing take the risk with him.

This is my Fight Song--TAKE BACK MY LIFE SONG, PROVE I'M ALRIGHT SONGWhen Lilly started to talk, confirming that Jasper had done a lot of stupid things after Mount Weather, Harper could do nothing but think exactly. That was exactly what Jasper had done and in Harper's eyes, he was still that same person and there was no way that Harper could trust him because of that. There was a relief at hearing the words that Lilly was saying, knowing that she wasn't completely blind to the things that Jasper had done and Harper quickly took to assuming that Lilly was on her side and that she would take Harper's warning that they needed to keep a good eye on Jasper. But then came the but. Harper frowned, not happy with that word as Lilly's words trailed off a bit. Why would there be a need for a "but"? All Harper was doing was giving a warning, wanting to discuss anything they could do to make sure their faction was safe, from the outside but also from the inside. Then Lilly's moved to touch Harper's arm and she had a feeling she knew what was about to come.
"What happened while he was chipped, was just that." Yep, Harper should have seen that coming. It wasn't like it was the first time that Harper had heard such words, it was all that Harper had heard since the whole City of Light terror had ended. Everyone had been talking about the chipped people and how that their actions weren't their own. That part, in theory, Harper did agree with. She didn't blame everyone for what they had done while chipped and she didn't blame Jasper completely for what he had done while chipped. The part that worried Harper was that the actions he had gone through with while chipped didn't seem shocking in her mind because they followed along with a long list of things that he had done before that. Yes, he had been chipped. But did that mean he hadn't done a lot of other stupid and dangerous things when he wasn't chipped? No, it didn't.
Harper paused to think before her next words, not wanting to spit out something without thinking that would cause Lilly to be less likely to listen to her. It was true that her and Lilly got along well but with the stressful situation and Lilly being placed in a position as leader in the faction, Harper wasn't sure how much that would help her in this situation. "What he did when he was chipped, yeah, he was chipped." The best Harper could do was try and help Lilly see things how she saw it. "But, he had been doing so many stupid and reckless things before then so what he did chipped didn't seem out of character." Harper took a small step back, shrugging Lilly's hand off of her shoulder as she did. There was no logic behind why but Harper felt like the hand on her shoulder would make her suddenly decide that Lilly was right. "I know we need Jasper and he could be extremely helpful. I just want to put it out there that we might need to watch him more carefully, that's all." |
