Lexa was the commander. She was the one who had to lead her people; unify her people and keep them safe. War destroyed the peace she fought to protect, but of course there was always a way to stop it. Politics in Polis were far more complicated that those on the battleground. Queen Nia had allied with the Skaikru—as so many of the victims in the mountain were Azgeda. There had been so much death that day, but the Skaikru was liberated and her people were free, still... many had died. Bellamy left and forged an alliance with Azgeda, which was enough to make Lexa nauseous on its own, but now... now there was a possibility for an alliance with Azgeda, which would unite them all.
Queen Nia offered her son, Roan to Lexa to wed and forge a lasting alliance in blood. Lexa was smart though. She refused. She would not marry and bed the son of the woman who tortured and killed her first and only true love. Lexa would not let his blood sully hers and she would not give him the chance to slit her throat in her sleep. No. She refused. Then another offer was presented... Instead of Roan, Bellamy of the Sky People was offered instead. This would not only bind Lexa to Azgeda, but also to Arkadia... The bitch was smart... She knew that this sick power struggle was aimed to hurt Lexa. To control her and smother any chance of real love—Lexa drew a breath. No. She wouldn’t allow it to affect her this way...
For hours, she and Titus, along with Queen Nia and Bellamy discussed terms and negotiations but the negotiations were done. The wedding day was set. A week from today... Lexa’s chest was so heavy when she left that room... her bedroom seemed too small, her breathing was too strained... This was it. There would be no blood, only binding through politics. It made her sick. Bellamy was better than Roan. She trusted Bellamy more than that bastard Azgeda scum. She did not expect to run into Bellamy now though.
As she stormed down the hall towards the balcony, she halted hard. It was late; early morning... Yet here Bellamy stood on the balcony—Lexa’s balcony. It was the only place she was never disturbed and the only place where she could feel free and HE was here. “Did you not like the room?” she asked as she clamped her smothered emotions down further. She tried to keep her tone soft and complacent but it came out harsh. Resentful. As though this were his fault.

whatever THE HELL WE WANT How had it come to this. Bellamy had never really given marriage much thought before. He had dedicated his life to protecting Octavia and she had been his priority. It was also why he had never been in a relationship on the Ark. But now . . . everything was different. Mount Weather had changed everyone. The Mountain People were dead, and that was a guilt that Bellamy had to shoulder; the burden of more spilled blood. But it wasn't just those thoughts that made him stand where he was, looking at he view of Polis. Following Mount Weather, the Arkers and Azgeda had struck an alliance. Azgeda was a strong, powerful clan who were displeased with the Commander. The less Arkadia had to be involved in another war, the better.
He had established a fairly good rapport with the Ice Nation, due to his connections with them in the harvest chamber -- in particular Echo -- so he served as an ambassador as sorts. But when it came down to it, everyone knew that the clans, and even Arkadia, were on the brink of another war. It was only a matter of time. Which was why things needed to happen, and quickly. Nia had wanted to marry Lexa to Roan, but when the proposal was rejection . . . his name came up.
All was not what it seemed to be though. Nia didn't want peace with Lexa; she wanted her dead. She told Bellamy that Ontari would be the next heda, and that he need only be married to Lexa long enough to kill her. She guaranteed him peace, and that his people would be protected. Marrying Lexa would protect Arkadia in every aspect, so he had to appease Nia. He said he would do it but . . . he wasn't entirely sure. Lexa had come through during Mount Weather. He didn't believe she deserved to die just because another clan disagreed with her. And yet . . . making an enemy of Nia right now was not wise. So he agreed to it.
After extensive discussions, he would be marrying Lexa a week from today. It was unsettling. And yet, necessary. Which was why they had both agreed to it he supposed. When it came down to it . . . they loved their people more than themselves, and that commonality between them, was what prompted them to go through with this. Because, it was what was best for their people. Soft footsteps and a voice broke him from his thoughts as he heard her question his liking to the room.
Her tone was harsh, but he was unphased by it. He didn't look at her, not right away. His gaze was fixated to the view, though he wasn't really looking at that either. His room. The rooms were far bigger than anything he'd ever been in. He was used to small quarters -- his apartment on the Ark being quite tiny, and his room in Arkadia a modest size -- though probably bigger than his apartment that he grew up on with his mother and sister. Space was never an issue for him. But her question didn't make it sound like she was concerned about his comfort . . . which he was glad for. He didn't want her concern.
"It's fine," he said almost dismissively, indifferently. He didn't care about his room. Finally turning his head he looked at her, his expression guarded as he could ignore the feeling in the pit of his stomach that intensified every time he thought of what Nia wanted him to do by marrying Lexa. "Am I disturbing you?" He asked sarcastically, since he was the one who had been standing here yet at the same time . . . he was fully aware that this entire tower was basically hers. That she was the Commander and that put her as the ultimate authority figure. That most probably wouldn't change when they wed. He wasn't doing this for power. He was doing this to ensure protection for his people. He just . . . never thought he'd have to make a commitment like this one to do it. But if it kept the other Arkers safe, then he would gladly make any necessary sacrifice for them. For his people.

Lexa walked towards the railing and leaned over it, looking down at the city below. She didn’t answer Bellamy’s snarky question at first. This was the place where she came to calm down. Funny though how her home had now become their home... She didn’t have a right to make him leave because soon they would be married... She knew her duty was to accept this; and to try to make this work, but it was clear Bellamy hated the arrangement as much as she did. She didn’t know if this was a good thing or a bad one. “No.” She answered after a long moment and a few deep breaths. Her head was spinning, but she still had to remain... strong. She wasn’t alone as she normally was. “This is your home now just as much as it is mine,” there was no attitude in her tone. It was matter of fact.
She frowned under the weight of the questions rolling around in her head... but some were louder than others. The memories, the concerns and the lessons from each commander before her rolled in her mind, and sometimes it made it so difficult to focus. “Why are you doing this Bellamy?” she asked, glancing back at him with an honest expression. Her curiosity outweighed her normally stoic self... “Does she want you to kill me?” That question had been on her mind since the beginning. It was a smart plan... He could get close and make it look like an accident... Nia wouldn’t be blamed. The next commander would know, though. They always did.

whatever THE HELL WE WANT Home. Where was home. Bellamy supposed it was where his sister was, where the people he cared about were. But this place . . . could it be his home? Or just a shelter that he remained at because of political obligations? He didn't argue with the words of course. Lexa was offering this place as a home, and he appreciated that from her part. But he also wasn't naive. He didn't intend to fully adapt to Grounder culture. He was still an Arker at heart, though he knew he would have to conform in certain ways. He wasn't going to make this any more difficult for Lexa than it needed to be. Or for anyone else at that.
"Thanks." It was all he could manage to say, a low voice but the word was not insincere. It was her next question that distracted all though. And the one that followed that made it worse. He maintained a stoic appearance though. The skil was something he had developed when raising Octavia. He'd had to lie, break the law on a daily basis . . . and remain calm in the face of confrontation. All to protect his sister. It came in handy during moments like these. Especially since Bellamy couldn't remember a time where he didn't live in fear. Where he didn't live in constant fear for someone he cared about. On the Ark it had been for his mother and Octavia. Down here, it was for the others. "The same reason you are," he said, turning his head to look at her so that she knew his words were honest ones.
"To protect my people." To ensure their protection and safety. No one wanted a war. And this was the best way to diffuse one out of all the clans. "Probably," Bellamy answered dismissively, almost making it a lighter answer at a tease for Nia's dislike for Lexa was hardly any secret. "But that's not why I'm doing this. That's not what it's about for me." Which, was true. He didn't know what to do when the time came that Nia would demand it of him, as he held knowledge of her plan to assassinate Lexa using him. But . . . for right now, he could truthfully state his motivations for doing this. And it wasn't primarily about killing Lexa. "Has a Commander ever married before?" He asked. Part of his motivation for asking was to change the subject, but the other part -- perhaps the more dominant one -- was genuine curiosity.

Lexa believed him. He didn’t seem like the dishonorable type. She respected that, and didn’t press the question further. Still, she had a feeling that Queen Nia would try to use Bellamy for information. She knew she had to be careful, whether or not they were married. She leaned over the banister still, looking down and counting those who she could see from such a high point. She loved the view from here and it would take more than a loveless fiancé to ruin this place for her. It gave her an odd sense of peace, being under the sky this way. “No,” she answered with her eyes flashing to him.
“To be commander means to be alone.” She stated in an empty and cold voice, the same way it was uttered to her. She could still remember the way that Titus tried to calm her the day Costia’s head was brought to her bedside. Love is weakness. She took a slow breath and looked at Bellamy curiously. “I would have married... I planned to be the first commander who did.” She laughed softly and looked up at the sky as she leaned against the banister. “It makes this situation ironic...” Her head tilted as she looked over Bellamy, wondering what was going on in that head of his. He hated her. She knew he did... She could feel it dripping off of him. Still she was curious about him.
“Have you ever considered marriage?” she asked curiously, wondering if he had fallen for the Azgeda girl Echo... Wouldn’t that be sour; being pulled away from someone he felt for.

whatever THE HELL WE WANT Alone. He could understand that. He couldn't say he was entirely surprised that her duties forced her to be alone. Yet her next words, about having planned to marry implied that there was someone that she had wanted to marry. Bellamy knew better than to pry into this, but he did wonder. Not enough to bring it to light. It seemed too personal he supposed. "Well, I guess now you are," he said almost as a joke but it lacked the joviality that should be attached to one . . . because his words were true. Just as she pointed out the irony in this arrangement.
"Even if it's not what you had in mind." A safe assumption, based on her earlier words of having planned to be the first. He hardly imagined she ever envisioned such an arrangement in her future. He in no way ever thought it would be necessary to marry for political reasons. It seemed so . . . traditional. So historic. And while Bellamy was a history buff, he didn't expect to relive it. Her question caused him to pause in thought, though he quickly knew the answer. "No," he admitted. "My duty has always been to my family, to my people." While he was no where near as high ranking as her -- he was no Commander, no Chancellor, nothing of that higher authority -- but he would still die for any single one of his people without a moment's hesitation. Whatever it took to save their lives.
"Which I guess, it what makes this ironic for me too." Because marriage, was now the way to protect his people and fulfill that duty of his. "We're both fulfilling a responsibility to our people, in a way we didn't really expect." At least they had that in common. Turning to look at her, he meant his next words. "I won't take that lightly." This was serious to him. He wasn't going to abuse or betray this arrangement . . . which was why, he didn't want to assassinate her as Nia had instructed him to. Because it was dishonest. Because, marriage solidified a union between them. One thing at a time though. And right now, he was just dealing with processing this news . . . that in a week's time, the woman next to him was going to become his wife.

She and Bellamy were not that different. Had things gone differently in the mountain; had she allowed the Skaikru to go through with their plans maybe they would have become friends. It was a laughable idea, but in this moment she couldn’t help feeling those similarities. Maybe it was why they clashed so hard. His responsibilities were with his people and hers were with her own. The two would betray one another in a heartbeat to protect them and that kind of a relationship was not built on a foundation of trust. Therefore it didn’t build at all. She did not hate him, but the idea of marrying him was not pleasing. So, she took all feeling away from the situation. “But you have been in love.” She questioned, curious… Maybe we Clarke? Or maybe with Echo… she wasn’t sure.
With so many similarities she couldn’t imagine him not getting close to someone he was sworn to protect. It was an odd position; standing side by side with someone in that way… It was hard not to feel things. She felt emotions she had not for a long time with Clarke in the brief moments they were together, but that was nothing more than a memory now. Slowly she turned to look at him curiously. “You won’t take it lightly,” she frowned with confusion when she thought of the statement.
“Do you see this as legitimate? A real union?” She did… Truly. After marrying Bellamy he would be one of her people, as would his people… She didn’t expect him to trust her so she wasn’t about to say such things. It would be wasted breath on empty ears, but she wanted to know how serious this was to Bellamy; a sky boy who knew nothing of their traditions until recently. Did he know what this meant? Marrying the commander? It wasn’t a simple union. It was one with devastating weight.

whatever THE HELL WE WANT She spoke of him being in love, either asking or it assuming it. Bellamy remained silent. Love. Now that was not a luxury he could ever grant himself. There were people he loved, like his family. Clarke. The delinquents. But even then, it was a familial love. He had never experienced a romantic love with anyone. He had never allowed another close enough. He couldn't. The question was deeply personal, and at the same time . . . perhaps she did deserve to know the truth. They were going to be husband and wife after all. But there was nothing emotional or romantic about this. It was all political; strictly business.
"You asking or assuming?" He inquired. "Because I haven't." His tone was stoic as always, unphased by the admittance of never having been in love. He supposed it was best to tell her that there wasn't anyone else. That he was going to be sneaking off to hook up with a lover. "You have though," he returned, matching her tone of being somewhere between a question and an assumption. She had said she'd intended to marry, so he assumed that falling in love had prompted such thoughts.
Her next inquiry was a fair one, and once again, he saw no need or reason to lie. "I do." Marriage was not a joke. They may not be getting married for love, but it was still a binding union. "Marriage is its own alliance. And I intend to honor it. Just as I would a truce." His words seemed to even make up his mind about not following through with Nia's plan. He hadn't even realized it, but for now . . . he had no intention of harming Lexa. "Do you see it differently?" He asked with genuine curiosity, rather than any accusation or judgment in his voice.

“Assuming,” she admitted after a moment before nodding. “She’s dead.” Her eyes flashed to him hesitantly as she thought over what being married to the commander would actually mean; what it would make him. “People who are close to me tend not to live very long... Though since you represent Azgeda, maybe that will change.” She hoped at least... Though she believed firmly that Queen Nia wanted an insider—and what better way to get one than to inject a spy into Lexa’s bed. It was a taunt; control over her relationships. Well, Nia would have to try harder than that. She never intended to trust Bellamy, just has he would never trust her. That coldness went without saying. She doubted they would ever share a bed. Their marriage was purely political... Lexa new Bellamy would never see her as a lover just as she would never see him as one. She didn’t like him. Simple as that—but it was better than the ice queen’s son.
“This marriage is a truce; a contract and that is all.” She replied—her tone cool and void of emotion. The other shoe would drop. Nia always had an ulterior motive. She didn’t believe that Bellamy was a pawn—she sent in a knight and would expect something in return. Lexa honored the alliance with Skaikru more than the one it would form with Azgeda. Still, politics were a part of being commander and she had to play her role. “The fact that you see it that way does give me some relief. After all, if I were to die due to a plan Azgeda thought up I don’t think the next commander would honor that truce.” Of course, she didn’t know Nia had her own nightblood. Lexa had her eyes set on Aden as the next Heda.

whatever THE HELL WE WANT Assuming. He didn't blame her for that. The thoughts on the subject ceased though, when she revealed that she was dead. The woman who she loved was dead. Bellamy didn't know what it was to lose a romantic partner like that; one that you actually loved. He'd lost those he's slept with . . . like Roma. But to actually lose someone that you had formed that emotional bond with, he couldn't imagine. At the same time, love was love. And whether it was a family, friend, or lover, losing someone you genuinely loved was never easy.
"I'm sorry." His condolences were spoken in a low voice, but genuine. More emotion that perhaps he should have let out. But he wasn't going to dismiss her pain, even if she couldn't show her own emotion. He paused in a thoughtful silence as she revealed that people she was close to didn't live very long. Something else he could understand. For someone to love Bellamy was a curse, rather than a blessing. He knew that, and it was why he was undeserving, unworthy of anyone's affections. "Well then it's a good thing we're not close," he said, an attempt of a joke, though there was truth to it. He knew what she meant when she said 'close' . . . for they were to be married, and presumably to share a bed. That, was in the public's eye though. When it came to how they felt about each other, well, there was nothing emotional about their bond. There was nothing deep, or intimate about it. Purely political.
So why not try to make light of the words and offer a way to soften the mood, ever so slightly. He wasn't sure how much of a sense of humor Lexa had though. It wasn't like Bellamy himself had much of one. Weighted by the burdens of being a leader tended to take away the humor in a person and the ability to find it in a situation. "This is about protecting our people," Bellamy stated, evidently unafraid of death. Internally, of course he was afraid of death. Who wasn't? But that wasn't what this was about. He wasn't going to express his deep seated insecurities when their people needed him to be strong. "I represent Azgeda, and Skaikru," he added on. "This marriage, is just the way to solidify our union. Maybe peace can finally be acheived." Even he knew it was a naive thought, but he was trying to be somewhat hopeful. He wasn't an idealist however. He was a realist.
He had to hold himself back at revealing too much however, when she spoke of the next Commander. Nia seemed fairly confident that it would be Ontari, and she had offered him a way out of a loveless marriage, saying that once she took the throne of Heda, Bellamy wouldn't have a marital contractual obligation anymore. "Do you already know who the next Heda would be?" He asked curiously. Not because he was toying with the idea of her death or encouraging it, but because he was wondering if she knew who it was . . . if she had any idea. All the while, he was already making it a mental note not to tell Nia whatever Lexa told him. He feared it may put a target on the person's back and that was not what he wanted. He was struggling enough with Nia's proposition and so pushed it out of his mind for the time being.
