He's made nothing but mistakes when it came to the people he had sworn to protect. An other that he was wondering if he could even keep. Once he had taken oath--it had been everything. He was going to do it, no matter what titles came with it, or what titles that were kept from him. Now he wasn't so sure. He still believed he could do this better then most, but his mistakes were costly, and it was getting harder to drink them away at night.
Not that he tried very hard to drink them away. Marcus Kane, son of Vera Kane, was not going to fall into despair and drink. At least not tonight. No tonight he was meeting with @miller, a kid he had once arrested on the Ark and sent to Earth; now that kid was more a man and he was in need of his skills. It seemed no matter what, he was still trying to get these kids killed. Only thing time he was putting his life on the line with them.
Once he was in the empty storage room, Marcus waited for Miller to join him. He had been surprised to find Miller among the supporters, as he had thought that Bellamy and Miller were very close and that would sway Miller toward Pike. However this was about more then friendships. It was about peace, and how Pike was going to start a war that would bring with it an end to the Arkers. Marcus took a deep breath, and let it out slowly. He took full responsibility for this. Just as he knew he had to try to keep them alive.

She gave an honest answer, and Marcus slowly nodded his head with her reasoning. He could see it, how she put more then the others into her training, but how it didn't own her like it had him. There wasn't a right or wrong answer with his question, but more of a self evaluation. If she wanted a family she couldn't be as committed as she was now. Marcus wasn't sure he was built for family. He had been raised mostly by his mother who had thrown herself into her faith to escape his abusive father who wasn't always around--thankfully. Marcus had not been a guard for two full years when he arrested his father, and watched him get floated. Since then he had been very by the rule, and it had gotten him moved up and up through the ranks very quickly.
She thanked him for showing her the moves, and Marcus nodded. "They'll serve you well against the larger people you will need to fight with; especially when you become a guard and have to arrest people." The citizens knew that they would be floated for any little crime, which meant they didn't often go willingly to be arrested. You had to be ready to fight and put them down with as little effort as you could. "Though you should always try to use the shock baton before you attempt physically restraining. The last thing you want is it getting out of control and a citizen getting caught in the cross fire."

She had moved to the table. and put her feet it he chair. Marcus moved his hand to her angle and lightly touched it to make sure it only felt slightly swollen and nothing felt off. He wasn't a doctor but he knew a bit about injuries from his own days as a cadet, and from training them. His light first aid training was mostly how to slow bleeding until the doctor got there, or how to tell in an injury needed more medical attention. “I guess it could have been worse . . . or not." Looking up from her ankle, he raised his eyes brows in a slightly mocking, slightly teasing manner. He could tell her ankle wasn't going to need medical attention, so instead he used the wrap from his pocket to bind it tightly, and drape the ice pack over it.
He looked back up at her, as she spoke again. "You looked very concentrated back there, Marcus. You really didn’t like to see us get beaten up, did you?” It was different. He had come to see her as a friend, rather then as someone he needed to ready for the guard. He had not liked seeing her get beaten up. It was seeing her take the hits and keep pushing herself. Not the others. "I would never take pleasure in watching anyone get beaten . . . especially a friend." Which was what she had come to be. A friend.

“You’re the best.” She told him after opening the door. Marcus knew they shouldn't have become friends as much as they were outside of training, but he couldn't help it. He enjoyed spending time around her. She took the cooling pack, and then moved to walk into her place, leaving Marcus to notice that she was slightly favoring one side over the other. Not enough to show major injury, but enough that he could tell she was hurting. “I was just about to take a look at how colorful I’m about to become.” He had seen the beating, and could guess she would have some busing. Tomorrow she would hurt worse. He wanted to tell his friend to take the day off, but as her training officer he stayed silent.
She would have to push through. He had. “I bet you can call me ABC tomorrow: Aurora Blake Cow with those bruises.” Marcus found himself laughing at that, "You did well today, tomorrow you will pay for it, but you got a lot of people's attention. That could serve you well later when it's time to finish and request assignments." He told her moving to stand by the table. "Sit up here, and prop your foot on the chair, let me make sure it's not too swollen." Then he could check on the rest of her, but the fact that she was favoring one side meant he needed to start there. She was walking fine, so he knew it wasn't major, but he needed to make sure.

Marcus walked down the halls of the Ark, his footsteps heavy as they slightly echoed off the walls. Muted thuds from his boots. The heavy steps matching the dark feelings he was having trouble adjusting to, much less labeling right now. He had not like watching things play out today, and had even found himself having to force himself to stay standing in place while watching what he knew had to happen. It was hard but he had been the one to help plan it. Ego was one thing that would always bring down a giant, and so to make sure that they held no egos he had to make sure they knew they weren't the best. That they still had much ground to cover.
He didn't expect what happen today! She was so stubborn! She had refused to stay down, and while she had proven to be the best in her class, she had also gotten a good beating from it. Nothing that would kill her, but he knew she would be sore right now. Which was why he was checking on her. He needed to make sure that she was alright. It was his job.
Marcus paused outside her door, and knocked on it. He had told her that he would come by later, so he knew she was expecting him, but he still didn't just walk in. In his hand was a cooling pack that might help her ease some of the aches. When the door opened, it was like the lights going on or off, there was a switch from him being the guard--from him being her superior--to him being her friend. "I thought you might want this." He offered the cooling pack, with a knowing (but proudly amused) smirk on his face.

“What silence?” She joked, her head gesturing toward the crowd, which he knew could be clearing out soon. The day was over, and free time was upon them. They would want to enjoy it with either family or lovers. They didn't have to report in until their next training shift. The same with her, though she didn't seem in a hurry. It made him wonder why. “Sounds good. Though you’re definitely in the advantage already.” Was he now? “You have access to my file and . . . there is a lot about me in that one.” Marcus didn't say anything to confirm or deny that. He had read her file, yes, but he was not going to use any of that information now. Instead he watched her silently for a moment, his eyes holding humor before he spoke up. "I like to think people are more then files," He told her in a light hearted comment, enjoying her smirk.
“You’re pretty young compared to the other supervising officers.” She went right in for it, and Marcus paused for a moment, his own fork growing still in his food. “Are you that good? I mean . . . I’m probably totally putting my foot in my mouth here, but you must have done something to earn this position earlier than all the others.” Marcus reached for his drink and took a slow sip from it to buy him a moment, though the how action just looked like he was clearing his voice to speak clearly. In truth she had asked him something that he had asked himself, but no one had ever come right out and asked him before.
He had often wondered that himself. In his early days he had found his father breaking the law, and had arrested him. He was floated shortly after, and ever since then Marcus had put himself fully into work. He didn't see his mother often, and because of both things all this time went to working. His smile never left his face, even while these dark thoughts flickered in the back of his mind. He didn't want the moment to fade away, by telling her of his past. "There are three types of Guardsmen, Blake. There are our co-cadets who work hard but this will be a job to them. They will put their personal lives before whatever job they get. They might not make it up the ranks, but they will be fine with that. If they were become gruadsmen." Because not everyone who was a cadet because a guardsmen. "Then there are people like Shumway there. Who will put their job before their personal life. It will be more then a job to them, and they will slowly make their way up the ranks; while leaving time to have a decent personal life."
"And then there are the ones like me." Who was hiding from their personal life. "Who don't have a personal life, and put everything they have into the guard." It wasn't the romanticized answer she wanted, but it was true. "Which type are you, Blake?"

Bellamy made a jest about a business meeting instead and Marcus knew he was nervous and his words were coming out more formal then they should be. This was his son, but they were different. Bellamy had an easier time of expressing himself with the girls. Marcus wasn't an idiot, he knew that his son had girls in his life but never any one special. While he didn't keep tabs on him, he heard things. Thankfully, not many things. VERY thankfully, only vague things. Such as 'Oh I saw your boy with this girl at this place, he is looking like his father' rather then who might be making it home with him. Marcus had fell in love with Aurora early on, and there had not be anyone else until now.
He had smiled, and relaxed a bit at his son's jest, but didn't comment on it until he was asked if there would be an statement let out. "Nothing so official. I don't think my personal life needs to be announced, but we have taken care not to let others know, and I am too old to be playing such games any more." He couldn't speak on more then that without Callie. He knew she had views about how relationships were, and marriage--he wasn't sure how much or how fast she would want things happening.
Bellamy went on to speak of his mother, and how he had always felt loved. That he had not needed a mother figure. "I had you." The words caused Marcus to need to take a moment before speaking. He had never known what a good father was, and had often wondered if he was doing everything he could. While he knew his son loved him, and was proud of who he was--hearing Bellamy express things made he feel that pride again; for both his son and in his relationship with his son. Something he had never had with his own father. "I can see you have your mother's well timed, and well said words of wisdom." He lightly joked, but not to take away the power of the words, but to instead bring up good thoughts. "She would be very proud of you, son."

Marcus was grateful when his son told he that he was glad he was happy. This wasn't their normal type of conversation, but it was one they needed to have to make sure they were both aware of what was happening since Marcus was thinking about beginning something public with Callie rather then just keeping it between themselves. Bellamy finding the clothing just made it seem like fate. He hoped that his son and his . . . . and Callie would get along, and that they could move forward together. He wasn't sure what to call Callie right now, other then just 'someone he loved'. Girl friend wasn't serious and sounded childish to a man his age.
He wanted to meet her, and Marcus felt an odd emotion that he could only pin point as nervous over that idea, but he didn't let it show. "I will arrange something. She has a daughter, perhaps the group of could sit down and co-meet on official terms." He knew her daughter, but she didn't know about him and Callie either. At least not that he was aware of. Then Bellamy asked how long, and Marcus wondered how best to answer. "I am going to decline giving you a number, but know that I have taken things slow. Callie and I are both very career driven people, and we have taken things slow. I have decided to change that. Perhaps begin by making things public." Working their way from there. "It means a lot to have your support. I know that being raised by a single parent is hard." He was raised by one, and had never really spoken about his father, who had been in and out of his life from birth until Marcus had arrested him and taken him to be floated. "Perhaps I should have done this sooner. Given you a mother figure you . . . . be a mother." Though Bellamy had his grandmother, he knew it wasn't the same. He was a career driven man, and Bellamy had paid for it at times when he couldn't be a father at the same time.

Bellamy was a man of a rather sharp intelligence, so it didn't surprise Marcus that he would snap out a reply, or that his sassy reply would be rather close tot he idea at hand. "Like what, floating the underage prisoners?" Or rather directly on the nail. Marcus said nothing in comment to that, but he knew that his expression and silence would be a conformation in it's self. Bellamy needed to know all this in order to do his job with the team he was guarding, which was why Marcus was letting him know all the details. "Are you sending someone down there?" He asked, and Marcus held his silence for another moment.
Only to give his son a change to settle between unsettling details. "The council has spent many hours in debate over the matter, and they had decided that the best way to buy the time needed for engineering to fix it, and to test to see if Earth is survivable, is to send 100 people down to Earth, thus cutting the population enough to buy us the time, and finding out if Earth is livable. However, we are not doing it yet. It's only an idea they are holding to vote on should they not fix the air within the time they have." One year. One year to fix it before 100 of the underage prisoners would be boxed up and sent to die. Marcus didn't like the plan, but he would support the council. As a father he hated it, but as a leader for the Ark he knew that if they didn't cut the 100 loose in a year, then they would not last long, and there would be no one left to save. "With any great luck, we will not have to make that vote. We do however, need to have a plan in place, because if we reach the deadline, then it will happen very quickly." And they were already working to make sure the drop ship could make it to earth.

Marcus gave him time to take the gun but the moment stretched on. Marcus assumed it was because Bellamy was thinking about the moment, or trying to savor things, but his words told him differently. Not only was Bellamy not ready to take up the gun, but he was doing it because apart of the other man lived inside him. Marcus had hoped being here would be enough, but clearly more would be needed to help Bellamy feel like himself again. He had not commented on Octavia making peace with the grounders for a reason--he was trying to keep the topic on Bellamy and his life here. He was hard to see him so conflicted, and not know how to help him find peace with himself.
Pulling the gun back toward himself, Marcus watched his son's face. He tried to think of wise words that would help him feel more at ease here, with less of a struggle. "It's not apart of their culture, because they were told it wasn't." He pointed out, knowing it wasn't just a fear of the weapon, but from what he heard it was Mount Weather making them fear it. Years and years of brain washing, from how he had heard the stories from his advisers. He knew Bellamy could tell them more once he was feeling more like himself. He kept his tone gentle, and encouraging. "I know this can't be easy for you Bellamy, you are fighting a war inside you over who you were for most your life, and who you had to fight really hard to be in order to survive. The more you walk in your old life, the easier this will be for you. You can't hold on to the grounder forever. He is not who you are." Bellamy was an Arker, and he belonged with his people--his family. "You're my son, and you belong here."

Marcus Kane was a man who believed in making plans and following them out. He had followed his plans from the time that he joined the guard as a cadet until where he was now. Join the guard. Put int he time. Push yourself higher. Get on the council. Become chancellor. That was the next step. The final step. Once he had that accomplished he would have done everything he had set out to do in his life time. He was only 40 and he had done it.
And a major part of that was in thanks to his wife. Callie, whom was a leader in her field as well, was his first and foremost supporter. She never followed him blindly, and always helped him see reason. She had married him young, but rose up the ranks by merit. Anyone who knew her, knew that Callie Kane was the brightest mind of her day, and that she was on the council as well because she was one of the best.
And then there was his daughter. Lilly.
Marcus had a soft spot for his daughter, but with two driven parents she was doing everything in her power to be unlike them. She had no plans for her future, and was only just now starting working in a temporary job before deciding on her career. It was it wife whom pushed her, as Marcus dotted on his daughter. He could command the guard, but he didn’t take the high hand with her. Perhaps if he had, there would not be a guardsman before him asking to speak with him about her his daughter. There was a hundred reasons the man could be standing before him right now with no appointment and Lilly on his mind. Had she gotten in trouble? Nothing medical had happened or they would have come to get him and Callie, in an official way. No, Marcus could tell this was something else.
He mentally sized up the guard. Was he here to blackmail him into keeping quiet about his daughter’s miss deeds? He knew she had a slightly wilder side, but he had thought she had good judgment. Marcus just stared at the younger man for a long moment before speaking, “You have my attention, Guardsmen Blake.” His tone was guarded, as was his expression. What had she gotten herself into this time?

“The last one to come sits alone.” She told him, and Marcus kept watching her, trying to see if that was true or not. Surely they could have all slid closer together to allow her to sit with them. She was small enough. “Besides, have you smelled them?” Her joke at their expense made him smile, and the serious moment broke. Touche. Men (and women) right from training didn't smell the best if they didn't clean up well afterwards. He had humor, good, that would help her with her training. There would be times when it got hard, but if one could find humor in some things then it might make it easier.
“I don’t remember you eating with us before.” She also was bold to call him out on something, and it didn't make his smile go away. "I was just making sure all was well." He told her, knowing that sometimes cadets could bully or try to weaken each other; and he wanted to make sure no one had harmed her. It was his job to protect the cadets, but there was also more then that. He had wanted to make sure no harm had come to her. "If I am ruining your silence, I can leave." He teased her, knowing she would not ask him to leave. "Or we can eat together, and get to know one another." He liked getting to know his cadets, as it let him know when to push and when they had hit their limit.

He heard the fussing, but his wife beat him too their son before he could. Marcus stood there and watched them for a moment before she walked toward him. It struck him again that his father could have well have stood just like this--leaning against the wall with his arms folded--and watched Vera with an infant Marcus. How did one see such things and still be the father that he was. As if to echo his thoughts, Aurora spoke of what a great father he was, and Marcus felt a faint smile touch his lips, and a slight pain in his chest. Maybe while they ate he would express what was in his head about his own father, but for now there were more important things.
Stepping forward he dropped his hands to her hips and gave her the kiss she was moved in for, before then dropping his head to give his son one. "Take your time." He assumed her, not wanting her to hurry when she was giving their son what he needed, and Bellamy came first. He would always come first for Marcus. "I will finish cleaning up here, and have everything ready while he sleeps." Since babies tended to sleep most the time, it would give them a chance to eat alone. Something that would become rare as their son got older, and Marcus would both look forward too that, and miss this.

Marcus Kane, had never married. He had lived most of his life alone, unattached. He had come close to falling in love a few times, but nothing seemed to have worked out for him. One woman, Aurora Blake, had been one of the very few whom he had almost loved. They had been secretly being together when Marcus was her training officer, and he had started falling in love with her. Knowing that it would kill both of their careers for a cadet to be sleeping with her teacher, he had broken things off with her before any more emotion could make it harder. However, he would learn a few days later that she had applied for a permit to have a child with another man. He discovered he might have felt more for her then he understood because the betrayal of that news had left Marcus withdrawn for both friends and pushing himself head first into his career.
A year of nothing but hard work had brought three promotions as he had moved from from a training officer to supervisory officer. From there he worked himself into the chief officer for a sector--in which all the guards in the manufacturing station reported to him. He had not been there long when he was moved to the political station (Alpha), and it was clear he was being groomed for commander. From there, the only promotion left would be joining the council, and even perhaps one day becoming the chancellor. He had been 32 year old and commander of the guard--youngest ever--but had kept pushing himself. In these days, he had even reconnected with her, but nothing had come form it.
Or so he had thought.
Instead he would find out that he had given her not only a son, but a daughter. He had children. Plural. Now he was chancellor, and building a city for his people. No one knew of his children, but himself and his children. He wanted the news to break in his own way, rather then someone using it against him. Which was why he was meeting his son's girl friend this way, rather then afterwards. He would address his plans soon with his children, though that was not his plan tonight. When he heard the knock at the door, and put the marker down, and pushed the map side before talking to answer it. "--and enjoy the thrill of a forbidden relationship.” He could hear her voice from the other side of the door as he opened it. Marcus found himself amused, "If that is the case, perhaps planning it with him standing near would be unadvised." He was clearly joking, though in typically Marcus tone it was almost hard to tell. His tone was always part serious. Stepping back he gestured for them to enter, before shutting the door behind them.

"Thank you," Marucs knew his son well. He could hear the weight of it in his voice, just as he could hear the unspoken words that went with it. "With all due respect Sir, I didn't keep them safe as a member of the guard." Anything that started with 'with all due respect' meant someone was going to disagree with him, and he didn't like it. "I will take back my rank when I am worthy of it. When I have safely brought the others back." Of that Marcus would have a chance to disagree with later. He wasn't asking his son to take back his rank. He was telling him.
However they were talking about the kids now. "We lost a lot of them," He knew it wasn't easy to loose anyone, much less a bunch of kids. "Nathan Miller?" "Yes, his father was a guard in alpha station, I am sure you remember him." "He was one of my seconds," As his father would be now. Marcus found it telling that Bellamy didn't 'keep them safe as a member of the guard' but he had seconds. There was his training.
"This is how far we got from the drop ship," Bellamy began explaining things, and Marcus listened intently, knowing that Bellamy would need to give this save speech to others later so the men he led out were aware of what was happening. "The Grounders were taking me and the other to their Commander. I don't know where exactly that is though." Marcus had heard of that, and was enraged that they had treated his son so. It didn't make him feel comfortable at what they might do to his granddaughter. "John Murphy, the delinquent I attacked earlier, has been to the Grounder camp before. He might know more." Which brought Marcus around to his point from before, and to his opening to making sure Bellamy understood this wasn't favoritism toward his son. It was an order from the chancellor to an officer.
Leaning over the table between them, Marcus braced his hands on it while still standing tall. "Son, I need to make the situation here very clear. Since we lost contact we have had council members bombing the Ark, treason, thief of the exodus ship, and civil unrest among what is left of the people that didn't die when the Ark lost full power for three days. The only thing keeping many in line is the hope of seeing the kids, and of us establishing a safe camp here. You might not have acted as a guardsmen down here, but right now what the people are seeing in you is a man who kept most the kids alive, and fought back the grounders. They are scared, and acclimating to a world you know better then anyone else here."
"Part of being a leader is taking responsibility not only for every life lost, but for every life saved as well. You don't get to take the guilt, but not the rest. I need you now. Not as a father, but as a new chancellor who needs a head of the ground unit for guardsmen, and a man sitting on the council who knows what we are up against." Marcus paused for a moment, standing taller once again. "Nor am I going to aim a civilian. I need you, son. I need you to take your rank back, lead the guard to get my granddaughter and the others back, and them come back and help me keep as many alive as we can. If they are going to wage a war, and I hope they see our grown numbers and weapons and back off, but if we must . . . then I need you by my side."
