blood and battle
ARE ALL I HAVE EVER KNOWN
He was the future Emperor. The news had still not registered. It still played over and over in Vero's mind. The man that he had developed such strong affection for, was the future Emperor of Yujleda. He had been entrusted with this secret, so that he could aid in protecting him. It was something that Vero had already taken upon himself for . . . emotional reasons. Matters of the heart. But now, he was asked to do it as a duty.
He could never voice his desires for the man. He had already acted upon them on the beach, shocked to find out in a short time after who Kia really was. He shouldn't even be addressing him in shortened form. He should be referring to him properly; affording him the titles that were his birthright. So when he was in Kia's presence now, taking his place in protecting the male, and keeping a watchful eye on him . . . he felt, unsure. He couldn't return to the same casual nature of their relationship.
And especially not how he had acted upon his desire by kissing him. The memory never lost, nor touch ever forgotten. But it was a pained deprivation he would have to endure. Because he was the joken future Emperor. "Kiawah," he stated, his tone more formal, just as it had been ever since discovering the truth. He slightly lowered his head, not enough for an onlooker to realize it was a bow, but enough to show respect to those who would know. In this case, only Kia, himself, and Nolia. "Is there anything you presently require?" He asked, unsure if the future Emperor needed anything. Whether Vero should be doing something to further fulfill his role as protector.

Kia was a little nervous. After the trip with Vero on the beach, winding up naked together and lost in the taste of each other's mouths, he knew he had to seek rare audience with his father. He knew of the expectations on him, to marry and produce an heir once he was Emperor, but he wanted desperately to enjoy this freedom he had now while he had it. He wanted to enjoy the company of Vero as much as he could. He wouldn't sleep with Vero if he knew Vero thought he was someone he wasn't. And Vero would know what was expected of Kia once he knew what his position was. But even if this new knowledge made Vero finally resist him and not follow through with anything else of a physical nature, he simply wanted to be able to enjoy his friend's company in complete honesty. He wanted to be able to tell him about his brother, and other details of his life he'd had to keep quiet, or slightly twist the truth of. He would sacrifice his physical desires if it meant being closer to Vero, if Vero so chose to push them aside.
Of course, that wasn't what Kia told his father. He told his father that Vero was strong and had grown protective of him, and that Vero would be a good asset in ensuring his safety in the coming years, for however much longer it was that he lived as a warrior. His father said he would speak to Nolia about it and see if she felt trust in the other young man as well, so Kia just had to wait and see what happened.
Of course, the next time he saw Vero, his demeanor was different. His tone was slightly more formal, the slight bow of his head, asking him if he required anything out of nowhere... an onlooker might not notice the change, but it was obvious to Kia. He looked up from where he sat, sharpening his spear, and smiled at him. He was going to have to deal with a lot of this once he took the throne. So many would be stunned by it. Maybe even hurt. He dreaded to think how his half-sister would react. She didn't even know he existed. This was the first one, though, and it felt slightly awkward. But he felt some hope, because it was Vero.
He stood, settling the base of his spear on the ground as he held it at his side. Did he require anything presently? "For you to not be angry with me," he answered honestly. "Or unfamiliar," he added, referring to the use of his full name, but also in general.

Vero looked at Kiawah, an eyebrow ever so slightly raised at his response. Not one he had expected but then . . . why shouldn't he have? "I am not angry," he assured him. Was he shocked to learn Kia's true identity? Most definitely. Did he understand why it was kept secret? Absolutely. Vero was not petty enough to feel personally insulted by the withholding of truth. Besides, it was an honor that he was told about Kia at all.
And he would not take that for granted. Hence, the reason he found it difficult to just ease back into the way they had been. He was the future Emperor, and Vero knew his own standing was not anywhere near equal, nor could he offer Kia anything apart from protection in regards to being a smart union. So what was the point? Left only was longing, and whatever . . . friendship they could have. If that at all. Could future Emperors develop such ties with another?
"The latter is a bit more difficult," he told him honestly, not feeling the need to lie. He never felt the need to lie to Kiawah. "All things considered," he added on, not needing to say the words directly for Kiawah would obviously know what he was referring to. Kia was a man of great importance. Vero was . . . not. So therefore, it made sense for him to remain formal in the presence of a man who held such high standing and authority. Well, that was Vero's head told him; his heart suggested otherwise.

Kia felt relief that Vero said he wasn't mad at him, though slightly disappointed by Vero's last words. He wished he could reach up and pull Vero into a kiss to remind him they were still the same people, but here was not the place, and Kia wasn't sure it would even be welcome now. "All things considered," he repeated.
He wanted to say that nothing had really changed, but that wasn't fair. Nothing had changed for Kia. But for Vero, this was something completely unexpected. Kia glanced around to make sure no one had come into range to hear their conversation, then stepped close enough to Vero to touch his elbow as he looked up at him. "So new information outweighs the years we've spent together? The closeness we share?" he asked, knowing a bit of worry crept into his gaze. There was no accusation in his voice, though, and he let his thumb move in faint circles against Vero's inner elbow, praying he wouldn't pull away.

Vero had to keep his breathing controlled as Kia shifted closer to him, locking eyes with him as Vero did the same. Not looking away. Even though he should. Not stepping back. Even though he should. He had to raise the formality between them otherwise . . . he would fall back into acting on his feelings for the other male. And that was even more of an impossibility now. Before, there had been hope. But all was deflated with his recently discovered status. And yet, he couldn't help the thrill that shot through him at Kia's touch. Speaking of their years of closeness. Years that Vero would forever cherish. While they were not over, that hope was . . . for he could no longer wish for something that could not be. Especially when Kia became Emperor one day. "No," he answered simply.
"But this . . . closeness, should be of a different nature. Not one to mimic recent time spent alone." Meaning the beach. Vero ensured his own voice was low, so not to hint to others what had happened. Whatever closeness they had now . . . had to be that of a protector for his superior. But even still, Vero did not pull away from his touch. He basked in it, in need for more even if dare not indicate it. And wishing he could say something to ease the worry from his gaze; wanting it to be replaced with the way he had looked at him on the beach. "You have far more to concern yourself with then our . . . closeness." A lot more. Considering the weight that would be placed on his shoulders. The intensive training and skill that would be expected of him. He would lead a powerful clan one day and have far greater priorities than Vero.

Kia might have felt relieved by the 'no', except that he could feel the 'but' coming after it, so his expression as he gazed at the other man didn't grow less worried, it just grew slightly sad as Vero explained that their closeness should be of a different nature, not like how they'd been on the beach. Kia had told himself it would be okay if Vero decided to end the physical side of their relationship... and it was. But that didn't mean it didn't ache.
He huffed as Vero finished, dropping his hand. "I've had far more to concern myself with for a great time," he said, feeling suddenly a bit emotional and defensive, but trying not to show it. This wasn't Vero's fault. "And yet I was and still am still capable of enjoying our friendship." He shook his head to himself and looked away. "Am I supposed to harden my heart now because of something that might not happen for years to come?" Kia looked back up with a frown. "I won't do that," he said firmly. "But... I will understand if you choose distance."

ARE ALL I HAVE EVER KNOWN
Vero knew what he had to do, and couldn't stop it. When they had been together at the beach, it wasn't with the intention to make it one time. He wanted to be with Kiawah, committed to him, just as he was committed to protecting him. He wanted to explore the next level of their relationship . . . a kiss solidifying that, for a promising future. But learning the truth had robbed him of such possibility; one that perhaps was not mutual. Yet, they would not have the chance to hold such discussion. His feelings for Kia were far deeper than a casual day of romance. But expressing that now, or ever, was impossible given his higher station. And yet, when he spoke to him like that, when he looked at him . . . it was so easy to give himself completely, and just pretend like there was no major difference of status between them.
"Distance is not something I desire." He wanted to make that very clear. That this wasn't what he wanted. "But, what I may desire, is irrelevant." In the grand scheme of things. He also knew he was getting dangerously close to admitting just how deep his feelings for the man were starting to run. Or perhaps, had been building for a little while now. He needed to remind himself to guard his words. There could be prying eyes and listening ears. "If it is our friendship that granted me position near you, then I hope to keep it. And honor it." By protecting him. Something else he wished to make clear, is that he was committed to Kia. Whether it was as a warrior, a friend, or a subject. "But, I will not be so quick to forget your importance." To their clan. To him. "And your path." As Emperor, purposely leaving these words unsaid but understood.

Again, hearing Vero say he did not desire distance might have been a comfort, except that Kia knew the 'but' was coming again. He wanted to tell Vero that he was wrong, that his desires were very far from irrelevant. Not now. Not ever for Kia, though he knew at some point he would not be able to act on them. He let Vero finish, speaking of wanting to keep and honor Kia's friendship, but he would not forget his importance. For some reason, those words stung, and he frowned up at Vero for a long moment. They couldn't have this conversation here, not if they wanted to speak freely. "Come with me," he said after a moment, then turned to make his way to the tent he shared with Nolia. She was gone for the day, and Kia couldn't be more thankful for that.
He knew Vero would follow him. He probably would have followed him before knowing the truth, but now there was no question, considering Vero's words. Once they were inside, Kia turned to look up at Vero again. "You speak of my importance," he said. "My importance because of who I am to our people. But not my importance as a man. As a person... My importance to you." It was selfish of him to want Vero still, he knew. But a small part of him felt frustration suddenly that his fate might rob him of having an amazing experience with someone he cared deeply for. Not just sex, but... a relationship. Even a temporary one.
Before he could think better of it he moved close, letting his hands come to rest on either side of Vero's waist. "If you do not desire distance, why choose it when we still yet have freedom?" he asked, wishing it sounded less like a plea. He frowned, lowering his gaze to Vero's chest. "While I still have freedom, anyway." Because Vero would still be a free man after Kia became Emperor.

ARE ALL I HAVE EVER KNOWN
Vero silently followed, not even needing to consider it when Kiawah led them to his tent. It did provide much needed privacy, for this was not a conversation to be had in the public. Especially with how much more personal and emotional it was getting. Vero listened intently to each word. He had purposely been placing importance on Kia for who he was to their people. Because . . . he had to. He never planned on expressing the reasons behind it, yet now, it felt impossible to evade the subject. To avoid the truth that was going to quickly spill from his lips.
Against his better judgment because . . . what use would it be to open up about what was in his heart? And yet, it was far too difficult not to, with the way Kia spoke. The way he moved closer to him, his hands rested on his waist. It made Vero know he needed to stiffen, yet he felt even more relaxed by his touch. "I have to," he began to say in a quiet voice. "I have to see you as an Emperor, not a man." Because . . . men were attainable. Emperors were not. Men were those that another could have a future with. Emperors were not. Well, in Vero's case. For he offered no political gain or any sort of strategic position that would strengthen Kia's own. One day he would marry another, better suited for him and Vero knew that he would despite it when it came. When it inevitably came.
Kia was important to Vero; too important, and that, was part of the problem. He clenched his jaw when Kia continued, asking why he placed distance when they still had freedom. When Kia still had freedom. Soon enough, it would be stripped from him to an extent, and he would have to act for the good of his people and clan, rather than any personal desires. Vero's eyes remained on Kia, not missing the way his eyes fell, and Vero tried to take a deep breath to say the words that he had meant to forever carry in his heart, despite the weighted burden. "What's the point?" He asked rhetorically. "You think I desire you for just one night? That my desire is to jok of you and then that's it?" Questions that were rhetorical and . . . he knew that he shouldn't be saying these things.
But the dam had been broken, and out came the pouring of emotions. "I place this distance to make it joken easier." Because he cared for him more than he should. More than he had a right to. And yet, having one night with him, one moment . . . sounded incredible. "Because if I do not . . . " It would hurt too much. "Your position takes you on path that I cannot follow . . . in the way I truly desire." Well, jok of. He shouldn't have said that. Voicing his own desires. His true desires. Desires that went deeper than just mere friendship or protector. And he knew, it was quite evident in his words.

Kia felt relieved that Vero didn't pull away from him, though his words didn't offer any comfort. Word that spoke of having to see him as an Emperor, not as man. "Then you see me falsely," he said softly. He was not an Emperor. Not yet. He was seventeen and held no power. Their clan didn't know he existed.
He closed his eyes, not lifting his gaze when Vero spoke again, asking what the point was. He went on to speak words that Kia knew, that he'd felt before, but Vero had never spoken. That Vero wanted more than a night with him, going on that he placed distance between them to make it easier, and he knew he couldn't follow Kia on his path. Kia was tempted to selfishly ask him who it made things easier for. The answer was Vero. Distance between them before it was required made things harder for Kia. But he knew he should not add guilt to his friend's burden.
"I know," he finally whispered. "It has weighed on my mind for some time. That letting myself be near you was playing with fire." One of his hands slid up from Vero's waist, over his chest to cup his jaw. "We're warriors. When do we ever take the easy path?" he added, finally looking up at Vero.
"I don't want to hurt you," he said, his hand slipping behind Vero's neck and urging him gently down toward him, tilting his own face up. "But I am the same person I was yesterday on the beach, and I wish to remain that person until I can't anymore." Not just with Vero, but generally too. But there was a fear in him, that if Vero pushed him away he would never experience something like they had again.

ARE ALL I HAVE EVER KNOWN
Falsely. No. Vero saw him for who he was and who he would become. That was how he needed to see him, in order to cease any thought of them becoming something more. It would end, inevitably. It had to for the sake of the clan he supposed. But he remained silent, instead listening to Kiawah speak of how he knew; how it weighed on him . . . and letting himself near Vero was playing with fire. So the feeling was mutual which, perhaps only made things worse. It made Vero know that he should step away before this became anything more than it was. But then, perhaps it was too late. And his heart started to take control, dominating his mind and what he knew was rational.
Especially with Kia's hand sliding over his chest, to rest on his jaw. "Blood and battle is more familiar to me than . . . this," Vero answered in response to Kia's words of the fact that they were warriors. Vero was one, but around Kia, he felt like he was something else. Someone else. His words should provide reassurance, but it only made Vero's heart ache more. Hearing him claim he did not want to hurt him, when Vero feared the same. That in the end, they would both end up hurt when they were forced to stop this. Not that they should be starting anything. Vero couldn't stop himself though; he couldn't resist the gentle pull of Kia's hand toward him, nor ignore the heavy beating of his heart as Kia shifted his own face upward. Vero closed his eyes, taking in the closeness of Kia.
"And when that day comes . . . " He knew he didn't need to finish the words. They both knew what would happen. Vero was not properly suited for an Emperor, and affairs of the clan would take over any affairs of the heart. Though presently, affairs of the heart seemed to control everything else. "Jok of that day," he stated, closing the distance between them as he pressed his lips against Kia's. His hand went to the back of the younger male's head, gently pressing it against him. This was going to only hurt more in the end . . . but desire for him, his building feelings for Kia were all consuming. And right now, all he could focus on, needing that outlet. Needing to express just how much he cared for the man before him.

Kia nodded as Vero replied that blood and battle were more familiar than this. They were to him as well, future Emperor or not. Kia had never done this with anyone else. He'd never felt this way about anyone else. Kia wanted to say as much, except he could feel Vero start to move forward toward him, and he didn't want to say anything to make him stop. Kia's heart thumped uncomfortably in his chest when Vero spoke of the day he became Emperor coming, pausing for a few moments that seemed impossible to breathe during. But when Vero finished speaking and pressed his lips to Kia's, Kia felt any tension he held in is body melt away.
They could just be Kia and Vero right now. The hand Kia had on Vero's jaw slid back into Vero's hair, and the hand still on Vero's waist slid around him and pulled their bodies closer. Kia made a small noise, desire mixed with relief as he coaxed Vero's mouth open and deepened the kiss. Without thinking, he felt himself pulling Vero back into the tent further, toward his own bed. "I have never felt this way before," he breathed between kisses, admitting what he had held in before. "I fear I never will again," he added, ignoring the way it made his chest ache. He couldn't imagine wanting anyone other than Vero before he took the throne, and he knew for certain he did not want a wife.

Vero couldn't be entirely certain how Kia would react to the kiss . . . but the moment their lips touched, it was clear. His hands repsonding by tightening embrace, his mouth coaxing Vero's further open to deepen it. Actions that Vero responded eagerly too, as he slid his tongue against Kia's, drinking him in. Never thinking that he would have this with him again, since finding out about his status and who he would be in the future. Vero followed where Kia pulled him toward, his eyes closed and completely consumed in the kiss that he didn't know where they were going. Nor did he care. Kia's words made Vero's heart swell with emotion. Pain among it.
To hear that Kia had never felt this way before, and didn't think he would . . . well, Vero knew that feeling all too well. Vero wanted to tell Kia that he would feel this way about another. That he would find someone else, better suited for him in every possible way. And yet, selfish desire for Kia and this moment, silenced Vero's lips. Unwanting to start an argument or try to persuade him how he was destined for better things rather than to be Vero's partner. His words only made Vero more desperate for him, kissing him more passionately, fervent desire evident in the kiss and his entire body.
His hands fell to Kia's ways, starting to undo his pants and whatever layers were there. Fingers hasty, as if realization would strike them and cease all actions. Vero slowly opened his eyes, heavily lidded with desire as he just gazed at Kia, leaning forward and down so that their foreheads could touch. "I joken need you," he stated, unable to fight the words or feeling any longer. Once he loosened his pants enough, Vero slightly lifted Kia so that he could place him on the bed. Vero proceeded to climb over him, lips returning to his own as each of Vero's hands were on either side of Kia's body, bracing him on the bed as he began to slowly nudge Kia backward so that the younger male's back would be on the surface of the bed.

Vero didn't say anything to Kia's words, but... what could he say? His answer came, however, with the added passion as they kissed, and Kia returned it with equal desire. It didn't matter if there were no words, as long as Vero knew how he felt. Kia's hand was starting to slide up the back of Vero's shirt when he felt Vero's hands start to open his pants, causing him to moan in anticipation. His cock was already starting to fill, but it flooded to full attention at the feeling.
He was panting heavily when Vero pressed their foreheads together, speaking words that only fueled Kia's desires before lifting him onto the bed. Kia made no protest as Vero urged him back onto his back, relishing the feeling of Vero's large form over him like this, having only ever dreamed of it before. "Vero," he moaned, pushing up the back of Vero's shirt as he settled against the bed until Vero shifted to let Kia get his shirt off. "I need you too. So much," he breathed, both his hands moving down Vero's chest to curl into the front of his pants. He lifted one leg, hooking it over Vero's hip to pull their groins together with a groan, as he started puling open Vero's pants too.

As Vero felt Kia start to lift his shirt, Vero eagerly complied . . . the way Kia said his name causing desire to surge through him. Having always wanted to hear him speak his name in such passion. It was something he wished he could get used to; but knew he could not. Yet feelings of their lacking intimate future were not foremost in his mind. Only his need for Kia; and his need to show Kia just how much the other meant to him. Not as an Emperor; as a man. Which, Kia had stated earlier. Vero moved his arms, being forced to break the contact of their lips as he pulled off his short and tossed it to the side. Taking advantage of this, he began to pull up Kia's shirt, divesting him of it and tossing it as carelessly to the side as he did his own. Hearing how much Kia desired him . . . it made his heart swell with emotion as well as intensify his physical need. He longed for this, for the man before him. And as he said before, not just for a night, or a day. He wanted him, and felt the mutual belief that Vero would never feel this way about another so long as he drew breath.
Once Kia's shirt was off, his pants joined them . . . one leg hooked around Vero that placed pressure against his aching cock. The contact was enough to make Vero groan with a heavy breath. He slipped a hand around Kia's length, another moan at the sensation of how he felt. "Kia," he breathed, lips moving along Kia's jaw, to the side of his neck. "You are so joken hard," he said more as a praise. Words filled with his own building desire as his hand starting to stroke over his impressive length. A hardness that he wanted to help sate. The overwhelming urge to feel the full contact of their skin took over, as he start to pull his own pants down, leaving one hand on Kia's member and his lips continuing to move along the side of Kiawah's neck. Every touch, every sensation, was driving Vero into a madness of pleasure and need.
