We've been conditioned to not make mistakes Callie felt devastated for her best friend. Jake had been floated, and Clarke had been arrested and Abby . . . was left to deal with this emotional aftermath of everything. Callie had never been married so did not know what it was to lose a husband. But she did have a daughter, and so couldn't imagine what it was like to have to deal with her arrest.
It broke Callie's heart, that Abby had lost so much, so fast. And while she knew nothing she could say could console her, she still wanted to be there for her as much as she could. Callie had tried to appeal to Marcus, knowing it wasn't fair to ask for personal favors because of their relationship . . . but it was out of Marcus' hands.
The Chancellor seemed set on this, and thus, Jake was floated. Callie had not bee n present at the execution, but she decided to see Abby shortly after it was over. Taking a deep breath, she knocked on the door of her apartment, already feeling the sting of tears in her eyes though kept them back for now. "Abby, it's me, Callie," he announced, unsure if she would open the door for anyone, but sincerely hoped she opened it for her.

Abby was a mix of emotions. She felt betrayed, guilty, regret, pain, agony, grief and loss. She lost her husband and her daughter in the span of seconds, watched as Jake was floated and then her daughter arrested to knowing about the Ark's life support failings. She felt betrayed because she had gone to Jaha as a friend, in hopes he could help sway Jake from telling the people about the air and instead, he condemned him to death. Because of her actions, her daughter could very well die as well when she hit eighteen. Her whole life crumbled around her and she couldn't do anything except try to keep her head above waters.
She'd already raged when she got home. The rage had built until she exploded and then she broke down, sobbing until her throat was raw and her heart and tears spent. What had she done? She was looking out for her family, and for the people, and it turned around to bite her. Was she even allowed to cry? This was her fault after all, what gave her that right? But she had. The tears had fallen until her cheeks were stained with the salt, the skin around her eyes red and puffy and a deep seated tiredness in her bones. Instead of getting up and doing what she needed to do, she just sat at the table, staring listlessly at the metal while her fingers scrabbled against the cold, making patterns that only her mind could see.
The knock at the door made her jump. The image of Jake standing there before the doors opened and his body was sucked into space, knowing he would try to breathe but he wouldn't be able to. It wasn't like in those old movies where people who went into space had their eyes pop and their heads explode. It was worse than that and she had condemned her own husband to it. For a moment she just stared and then realized that someone had knocked on the door, pulling herself to her feet and padding over while feeling numb. Time seemed to have no place or meaning in her life anymore and she knew, she knew she would have to get up in the morning and be the good doctor she was. Today there hadn't been anything that needed her attention and she half wished there was.
Work would be better than this. Anything would be better than this.
Opening the door revealed Callie, having not heard her speak as she had been too engrossed in her own mind. She couldn't even pretend to be strong; her face crumpled with agony and her emotions, her hand reaching out to her friend, her sister and she realized just how much she needed Callie in that moment.
