Living Like We're Renegades

[Nina Eaton]

It had been two months since the events of Mount Weather and while most appeared relieved to have the event behind them, Nina was different. She felt like something horrible was going to happen any moment now. She felt like it was impossible for things to be calm, especially on Earth. It had been one bad thing after another since they crashed in the Ark, so why would things be okay for them now? Nina felt like she was on edge and she hated it. She hated the paranoia that someone was going to attack any moment. With the betrayal of the grounders, she wasn't really sure how that left them. The grounders had no reason to have any bad blood towards the Arkers, but the Arkers were certainly peeved at the grounders for abandoning them. Most people seemed to not think about the betrayal. They left it in the past where it should be. But some, like Nina, knew that it wasn't the end. Something had to happen. Tempers would rise and they would come to blows at one point or another. Thinking otherwise would only get them killed.

But until that point, things in the camp had to continue. They had to continue to build their new home so that they could survive there for the rest of their lives. Having people from other stations would have been helpful, especially farm station, but they had to make do with what they had. Nina knew nothing about growing food or messing with the wiring to keep the fence working. She had been a soldier on the Ark and she was a soldier down here. Her skills were physical. Nina was still a smart girl, but she didn't have much to offer in terms of things that could help further their civilization.

It was another day and while Nina had patrol later, she still had a few hours to kill. She had to family to speak of, so she couldn't go and spend time with them. Her mother had been floated a few years back and her father had died during the Ark's landing. Not that she cared about her father to begin with, but he had still been her father. Nina always had a close group of friends and while some of them were down here, others were not. Her and Bellamy had been friends on the Ark since they had been in training together. Hell, she had a lot of history with Bellamy but he had so much on his mind that she never wanted to bug him to hang out. She had grown close with Harper since Mount Weather. She had offered to help train the girl once she recovered from being drilled. It was a good idea for everyone to have basic training skills, especially down here.

Walking through camp she spotted Atom. The two had known one another on the Ark but hadn't been best friends or anything. Nina had always enjoyed flirting with him but he had gotten locked up in the Sky Box before anything could really happen between them. Nina walked behind Atom and lightly kicked the spot behind his knee in an attempt to catch him by surprise. "Hey you," Nina greeted. She knew Atom had been one of the kids captured by Mount Weather but she had no idea if he had been drilled or not. "How have you been?" She asked.

Atom had been kind of out of it since Mount Weather. He had been one of the kids that were in there. Most of his days had been spent trying to forget about the horror that went on in the place. How they had taken the the grounders and drained them of their blood and then they did transfusions on their own. He had seen some of the kids volunteer to give their blood. Even he had been one of them for awhile. But then kids started disappearing. This didn't sit well with him and by the time Bellamy and Clarke stepped in they had lost some of their own. He still felt bad about the innocent ones. But even though he did, the genocide had saved those that were left. But the death of all the mountain men left a scar. How could it not, when he so many innocent people had died. Jasper was in the worst shape. He had seen how. Bellamy and the other had tried to keep him busy. But Jasper was hurting. So far the ground had messed up a lot of the kids. He was not alone, though some days he felt that he was. He nodded at Nina and forced a smile. Smiling had not come easily lately. But she deserved a smile. 

"Hey, um....Nina? How are you? I have been good."

He wasn't really, but that was not what anyone wanted to hear. He wanted to be civil. Plus she was pretty. He walked over to her to talk. Even though they hadn't spent any time together, he still felt closer to the delinquents than the other Arkers. He had to go out on patrol for a few hours and he knew that she was going to have to go out later, but he wondered if she would like to go with him now. He could pull some strings and she could go with him. He thought about it a moment more before he presented the idea. 

"What do you say about maybe you and I going out on patrol together? I can pull some strings and get you off duty tonight. Maybe we can have dinner together?"

Dating was a bit difficult for him. But he had not even thought about asking her out until that moment. Even just as a friend. He would take that. He hoped that she would like it as well.

She could tell that his smile was forced, but she didn't blame him. Smiling was difficult for everyone these days, especially the kids that had been inside Mount Weather. Nina had nothing to smile about but she had always been good at faking it. She had always been able to bury her emotions deep inside and pretend like everything was okay. Sure, it often made things more difficult for her when she finally broke down, but she never thought about that until it actually happened. It was always a minor detail that she told herself she would deal with later. Nina was awful at feelings but at least she knew it.

"I'm fine," she said with a nod of her head. She knew Atom wasn't good but she didn't press the matter further. She had never been one to push people to open up or talk about their feelings. She had always left them alone for the most part and it was mainly because that's what she wanted people to do around her. Most of the time she would offer to talk if they ever wanted to, but then she left it at that. She didn't hover and constantly shoot concerned looks at people. She acted normal because sometimes that was the best thing someone could do for someone else. So she would offer the same thing to Atom. At some point she would tell him he could talk to her if he wanted to, but she would leave it at that. She would keep it short and simple.

Raising her brows at his suggestion, a soft chuckle left her lips. "Well don't you appear to be connected," she teased with a grin. Nina would rather get her patrol over now as opposed to doing it later. She also knew that she was partnered with someone she didn't care for, so switching that out for Atom sounded amazing. Nina was even further surprised when he mentioned getting dinner together, but her facial expression didn't show her surprise. Instead, she smiled and nodded her head. "That sounds great," she said. Nina didn't know if he was asking her out on a date or just to hang out. Dating wasn't really a thing down here. Everyone basically just hooked up when they felt like it. Nina didn't have an issue with either intention, whether it be as friends or as a date. She liked Atom and he was also nice to look at.

Atom chuckled when he heard what she said and nodded. Being one of Bellamy's seconds kind of helped with that. Though he didn't normally ask for such privileges, he knew that Bellamy would let him get away with it just this once. "Just a moment, I will be right back." He took off running to make the arrangements. A few minutes later he came back and nodded at Nina. "Looks like it's a go. Monty is taking Jasper out with him tonight. I hope it works out okay. Jasper is still having a hard time." He walked up to her giving her a crooked grin and nodded toward the gate. "Ready to go, beautiful?" He was a flirt when he wanted to be and she was pretty enough to flirt with. But he could also tell she was not someone to mess with either. He could see the muscles in her arms and already knew that if she had to she could take him down. Though, he wondered if that wasn't a bad idea. Dammit Atom, get a hold of yourself. One pretty girl and you fall apart. He cleared his throat as he tried to focus on the patrol ahead. He knew they had to keep their wits about them. Unless.....he pushed the thought away from his mind. There was plenty of time to get to know Nina and he was not going to rush it and scare her off.

He started walking toward the gate, knowing that they would be able to get out and get their freedom soon. That was what he liked about it. When the adults had sent them down, he had liked that there was no one the tell them what to do. That they could do what ever they wanted. But now that the adults were back, they had a bit of authority over their heads. though not near as much as one might think. He noticed that the delinquents got away with more than what the other regular kids did and that there were some kids like Dylhan that were adjusting to this life. Bellamy was great with him, but when he went over to talk to him, he got kicked in the shins. So he stayed away. He continued to walk toward the gate hoping that she was beside him and as anxious to get out of there as he was. 

Casting a glance at her he noticed that she seemed as tough and determined as he was. She head the look of a warrior about her and he respected that now. They had all grown up fast on the ground and they all had their own little nightmares to deal with. But things could not be changed and he knew it. It was what it was.

"Atom and Nina for patrol...." 

The guard nodded and began the process of getting the gate opened so that the two of them could go out and get things started.

Nina nodded and watched him run off to pull those strings of his. She was super glad that she spotted Atom because the idea of both hanging out with him and getting out of the late patrol shift was amazing. Nina was fairly certain that she had been paired with Jasper for the later shift and while she liked the kid, she didn't know how to act around him right now. It wasn't that she wasn't sympathetic towards him and what he had been through. It was just that she didn't know how to act around him and she didn't know how to console him. They had never been close enough for her to know these things. She knew Monty was trying his hardest but from what she had seen, it hadn't been good enough for Jasper. It would take time, that was for certain, but she didn't know how long. 

Atom returned and explained the situation to her and Nina smiled. She was glad that Monty was going out with Jasper. While she wasn't sure if Jasper was ready for patrols, she knew that having Monty by his side would be the best bet. "Yeah. He just needs time," she said with a nod of her head. She didn't know what he really needed but she knew time would help. She grinned and chuckled at his statement. "Sure thing, handsome." She followed him towards the gate and thought about how much she was enjoying the light hearted nature of the conversation between the two of them. It was a welcomed distraction that Nina would gladly accept.

The guard opened the gate for them and the duo walked out of camp and into freedom. Nina grinned at the mere idea and glanced around. It was the same view as inside the camp but being outside made it seem more exciting. Turning to Atom, Nina's smile became a little smaller for a moment. "Okay, real talk. I'm going to put this out there once and know that it always stands but I'm not going to pester you about it every day," she explained. "If you need to talk about anything, I'll be here to listen." That was all she had to say on the matter and now she knew that they could go back to their carefree conversations. He knew that she would be there for him in any way necessary and that's all that mattered.

Atom heard every word she said and nodded at her. Though, being a guy, he tended to keep things bottled up. She might just be the one that could get him to do it. His eyes wandered around the woods as he thought about what she had said. He had a feeling that nothing was out there and the hair on the back of his neck seemed to be calm at the moment. He was trying to think of something to talk about with her but his mind went right back to flirting. He sighed inwardly and grinned at her. "So a bottle of wine and back at my place at 10?" He was joking of course. Well maybe he wasn't. But he knew that she was probably going to say no. That was why he said. it. But then, if she said yes it wouldn't break his heart. He then noticed some movement to the South of the large fence and he stopped and stood quietly as he saw Jasper and Monty sneakily emerge from the small hole. Folding his arms, he watched as Jasper and Monty took off in the opposite direction as them and he knew that Jasper had started to flip out again. But he said nothing as they disappeared in the direction of the drop ship. He was sure that Nina had seen it too. 

"Soooooo, I was thinking of seeing if we could make this a regular thing. We pull this shift together sort of thing. I will keep you busy in the evenings. I need to work on my training and well, we both have to eat." He was not sure what he was even doing. This was a lot to ask for and she might not be that into him if they had just started talking today. But still, he was flirting. he meant everything his said. His tone of voice even put it across that he was serious. He began to question himself though. 'What are you thinking, Atom? She hardly knows you. She isn't just going to marry you, settle down and have a family with you.' He was kicking him self for being stupid. But he still didn't retract his offer in any way. He liked Nina, he was not going to mess it up. Or had he just done it? But there was no time now as he noticed Indra walking toward them. She looked kind of worried and she pointed behind her as she spoke. "Pauna is wandering around over there. You may want to let Kane and Abby know that Pauna is getting closer to camp." He nodded and looked at Nina. Crap! So much for a fun day out on patrol. Now the adults had to figure out how to get rid of a huge gorilla. He himself had never seen it. But, he had heard the stories from the sighting that the others have had and he didn't want to see it. 

With a heavy sigh he followed Indra back to toward the gates that they had just lost sight of. He was going to still have dinner with Nina, he hoped. that hadn't changed.

Most guys stayed away from feelings and talking about them. Nina was the same in that sense. She didn't like talking about her feelings and while she knew it was bad, it was something she still had issues with. Bottling her emotions up often had bad repercussions such as her breaking down over the smallest thing. It was like a dam breaking and no matter what she did, she couldn't keep her emotions from spilling out. Nina had no real reason to withhold her emotions other than her father always trying to drill it into her that emotions were for the weak. Her mother had always tried to combat that point of view but with Nina training to become a guard on the Ark, her father's words had won out. So it was safe to say that Nina was not one of those annoying girls that constantly tried to get a guy to open up. She knew it was hard and she knew it sucked. 

She grinned at his words and sucked in her breath like she was having a hard time making a decision. "I don't know..." she said slowly. "Depends. Red or white?" She asked with a grin. The teasing nature was welcomed and she was glad Atom was able to return to this mood after she offered to talk if he ever wanted it. She hadn't wanted it to ruin their mood and was pleased to see that it hadn't. His eyes became focused on something and she followed his line of vision. She spotted Jasper and Monty sneaking out of camp and running into the woods. She chuckled to herself and shook her head. Those boys were trouble but she was glad to see that Jasper was doing something that resembled his old self.

Nina listened to him explain his idea and she smiled. She loved that idea. Not only did she like spending time with Atom, but she loved helping people train. If he was indirectly asking for help then she would certainly say yes. She also found it attractive that he didn't seem to be embarrassed about asking a girl for help. "I would love that," she said with a grin. "Be careful what you wish for, Atom! You'll never be able to get rid of me," she teased. She needed this. She needed some sort of normalcy in her life and it was clear that Atom was going to help her with that.

Indra approached and Nina stayed quiet, watching her speak. Her face formed a look on confusion. Pauna? What the hell was that and why did it sound familiar? Then it clicked and she realized what Indra was talking about. Oh, shit. "Come on," Nina said, motioning for Indra to follow them into the camp. Indra was probably one of the only grounders that Nina had a positive opinion of. She liked how she had taken Octavia under her wing but she wasn't crazy about Indra abandoning them at Mount Weather. The three of them walked back towards camp and the gates began to open before they even reached them. It was as if the appearance of Indra told everyone that something was wrong. "I shall find Kane," Indra spoke before disappearing into the camp. 

Nina frowned and placed her hands on her hips. "Well that sucks," she said to Atom. She had been looking forward to their adventure out in the woods. It wasn't quite time for dinner so they had some time to kill. Nina had no intention of letting Atom get out of dinner plans even if their plan had changed. "What do you want to do until dinner?" Nina asked, looking at Atom.

Atom had plenty of ideas that came to mind on what they could do, but instead he let his gaze go to the training area of the camp. A grin spread across his face as he realized he could get close to her with training. He glanced at her and wondered if she had seen the look in his eyes and where his attention was at. He was in a playful mood today and despite the danger of the Pauna, he knew that the adults would handle it and that the creature probably wouldn't get too close to camp. Nina was on his mind at the moment and he couldn't help thinking of a way to hang out with her longer. It was then that Bellamy came walking by and Atom spoke quietly with him for a moment and Bellamy glanced from Atom to Nina and then nodded. He grinned at Nina knowing that she had heard the conversation and that her shift had actually been changed for her. She was now officially his patrol partner. Bellamy then wandered off again, he seemed to be preoccupied with something and Atom was not going to bother him at the moment.

He winked at Nina and then then glanced back towards where the training area was. "How about we go train for a bit? Since we didn't get to go on patrol, we should do something guard wise." But he was thinking other things unguardwise. The smile he wore was more mischievous than anything. But then how could he not be feeling that way. Nina seemed to bring that out in him and he liked it. A lot. He wanted to spend a lot more time with her. That much was clear as he reached out now silently asking for her hand, he hoped she would take it. A slight blush colored his cheeks when he realized that he was suddenly falling for her. He swore that he wouldn't fall for anyone. Not after Octavia. But then he had not met her yet. The time they had already spent together had already taken hold of him.

All he could do now was wait for her response as he gazed down into her beautiful eyes. The smiles still on his face as he kept pushing the thoughts out of his head of wanting to do more with her than what he had already suggested. But then that was something that he could hardly help. She was beautiful and he couldn't think of her as anything else.

Nina watched as a grin quickly spread across his face and she couldn't help one forming on her own features. He had a mischievous glint in his eyes and Nina was dying to know what he was thinking. Well, if he was being the boy that he was then she knew exactly what he was thinking. To be honest, she didn't have a problem with it but Nina liked making them squirm a bit. If not for her own amusement, then for the sake of letting things build up between the two. They were soon interrupted by Bellamy walking by, having a quick conversation with Atom that she easily eavesdropped on. He seemed to have no problem with Nina switching patrol partners and she didn't see why he would. She had been friends with Bellamy on the Ark. Hell, they had a past together so their friendship was different. The eldest Blake sibling walked away and Nina returned her attention to Atom.

Grinning at his idea, she nodded. "Hell yeah," she said. "So long as you don't get too discouraged when I kick your ass," she teased, wiggling her eyebrows as she spoke. A movement caught her eyes and she saw Atom's stretched out hand, silently asking for her own. Nina kept the grin on her face and placed her hand in his, intertwining their fingers. They began to walk towards one of the training areas and Nina glanced over at Atom. "We should make this interesting. If I win, I get something and if you win, you get something," she suggested. Nina bit her lip as she thought about what she would want if, and when, she won. Asking for a date seemed lame since they sort of already had one planned for later that evening. "Okay, if I win I want to know something that no one else knows about you," Nina said. While part of her considered saying that she wanted him to take her to his room and have his way with her, she had decided on a different approach.

Atom like where this was going and she was now upping the ante. The battle could begin as soon as he made a decision on what he wanted if he won. He was realizing though, he better be thinking about what secret he wanted to tell her. Because she was already thinking that she w going to kick his ass and he might just damn well let her. Nina was probably not as strong as him muscle wise, But she had moves that he was sure that he could not beat. Thus making her stronger in the long run. She was more than a match for him and he knew it. He would have to have her teach him some moves sometime. But for now. He wanted to play and she was game. 

He felt their fingers entwine as they somehow seemed closer all of a sudden. Close enough for him to lean his head down and.....his thoughts went wild. Winking at her he nodded in agreement. "If I win, you have to show me one of your best combat moves." More than likely he would be watching her like a hawk, memorizing those curves like crazy. He would like the chance to feel them out, but he couldn't do that in public and he would have to wait for her to give him permission first. He never took things for granted and he knew it. Assuming too much got you into trouble and he didn't want to lose Nina, before he even was sure that he had her. 

He hoped that she would agree to his bet as well as he gazed down at her, his eyes traveling to her soft plump lips. He couldn't help that he wanted to kiss them right now and she was close enough to do it. He suddenly couldn't restrain himself any longer and he leaned in and kissed her gently, before pulling back and taking off running. "I bet I beat you there."

"Okay," Nina agreed. She could definitely show him some of her best combat moves. She had a few up her sleeve that she didn't even teach when she helped the others train. She always thought it was unwise to give away every trick in your book. But she didn't mind giving one to Atom if he won, but she wasn't too concerned about him winning. He may be larger than her and have more muscle mass but she had been trained for this. She was quick and could read the body language of her opponent to know what their next move would be before they even did it. Her natural ability to read body language was what gave her a leg up most of the time. It wasn't something they really taught at the academy back on the Ark. 

The sensation of soft lips against her own caught her off guard. She didn't even really have a chance to react before Atom was pulling away and running off towards the training area. Nina's mouth hung open in shock and she stared after him. "Cheater!" She yelled. Nina gathered her bearings and took off after him. She was fast but given his head start she wasn't sure she would be able to catch up with him before he reached the destination. Nina ran as fast as she could but her prediction had been correct, as she saw Atom reach the training area before she could catch up to him. 

Instead of slowing down as she reached the training area, Nina kept running. She kept her gaze on Atom's body and aimed for his torso. Crashing into him, Nina tackled his body to the ground. The semi-soft matt was there to catch their fall but Nina hadn't really been thinking about that. Once on the ground, Nina quickly maneuvered her body so that she was sitting on Atom's torso, grabbing his wrists and pinning them down as well. "That," Nina said, attempting to catch her breath. "Was cheating." Nina was leaning down enough where she could have probably kissed him again, and god did she want to. But she restrained herself, knowing that if she started she probably wouldn't be able to stop.

Atom skidded to a stop on the mat with a satisfied smirk gracing his lips, but the feeling was short lived when he suddenly felt her barrel into him and knocking him down flat on his back. The air was knocked out of him and he was soon gazing into her eyes as he was being restrained. Though he gave her a smile, enjoying that she was now sitting on top of him like that. He let out a chuckle as he heard the word cheating. "You think so, huh?" He was not going to argue any more than that and was definitely not going to try to get away or fight her restraining his wrists. What guy would do that anyway when the pretty woman is sitting on his abs. 

Though after thinking better of it as mischievous look cam into his eyes as she was teasing him with a wanted kiss. He suddenly flipped them over so he was straddling her and holding her wrists above her head before he leaned in and gave her a real one. When he pulled back, he winked at her and stood up getting into position so that they could practice. Though he knew that she would just take him right back down and win the the training bet. If that first attack didn't count. Had they even started yet. He gave her a curious look as he lift his hands ready for her to make the first strike. His mind was off in the gutter though as he was wondering what it would be like if she beat him up. Or would they just.....he shook his head to clear the thoughts out of his mind as he prepared for the session to come. 

"Come on, show me what you got...." In afterthought he wondered if he should have said that.

Nina grinned and nodded her head. "Oh, I know so," she teased. She couldn't believe that he had used the distraction of kissing her in order to get a head start. She was entertained but wouldn't let him know that. As far as he was concerned, she just saw him as a cheater. But Nina wasn't complaining about his method of distracting her. She could enjoy that distraction all the time if he let her. Her eyes bore into his and she looked for any sort of emotion she could. She looked for any clues that told her what his next move might be. But she hadn't been paying close enough attention, or had been paying too much attention to his eyes and lips, because she hadn't expected him to flip them over as quickly as he did. Her wrists were quickly pinned above her head and she was in the position Atom had been in only moments ago. 

She would have protested but Atom quickly pressed his lips against hers and she found herself shutting up. The kiss was far better than the quick one he had given her before running off. This was a kiss that Nina could melt into. So when he pulled away and got up, she let her mouth drop open in mock surprise. What a little tease. She quickly got up off the ground and got into her fighting stance. She chuckled and nodded her head at his request. Sure. She would show him what she had. Nina quickly went to throw a punch but swiped her leg down and across in order to hit his legs out from under him. "You'll just end up on your back again, Atom," Nina said in a song-song voice, teasing the male.

"I would like to see you try." He danced around like a prize fighter as he grinned at her playfully? It seemed that he was having more fun playing that actually training. But then he was more than happy to play with her. They very rarely got the chance to have fun and it seemed to be like a release in some aspects. The look in her eyes told him that she was enjoying this and he suddenly without thinking removed his shirt so that it wouldn't get torn or sweaty. He had a feeling that Nina was going to give him a workout that he wouldn't soon forget. He love the sing song voice she was using and the fact that he was getting this kind of reaction from her. He wondered if she needed to have fun as well. Though he could definitely think of a lot of fun things to do with her. His hair was now slightly tousled as he looked her straight in the eyes, his own dancing playfully.

"Well, come on. Bring it!" He was beginning to tease her more as he danced past her in true boxer fashion. He knew how to really train, but he was kind of showing off and he was having fun with her. How could he not when he was almost sure that he saw a glint in her eyes as well. One that was just as mischievous and playful as his own. At this point in time he knew that he was in for a small beating. He was pushing limits as he had fun with her. The thoughts of them rolling on the mat mad him a little warm as he realized that they were about to start training. Though in other words it was mock fighting for battle. He knew that they were at war, but this was not what was on his mind at this very moment. He was thinking of the training session they were doing and yet, he didn't want to be the one to start. He wanted it to be on her terms. To give her a chance to take control in a world that never gave them that chance. 

He watched her closely now waiting for that first moved. Ready for the sudden impact of her movements as she began training with her. She was really beautiful, and he was enjoying gazing into her eyes.

Nina chuckled and rolled her eyes at Atom quickly taking his shirt off. If he wanted to play like that, then fine. Nina glanced at his toned torso and nodded her head in appreciation. Shrugging her shoulders, she looked back at Atom's eyes. "Okay then," she said. Her words were loaded with a promise of something she would dish right back out to him. Nina's hands went to the bottom of her shirt and peeled it off and over her head, tossing it onto the side. Now in just her sports bra, Nina felt like they were on even playing fields. If he wanted to distract her with his chiseled body then she could do the same. She had boobs. She was going to use them.

Standing still, she watched Atom bounce around her. Her hands were on her hips and she pressed her lips into a line, trying to suppress a grin at his display. He looked silly but she loved it. She loved that they were able to joke around like this when training was always so serious. She could get out some pent up energy but also have fun at the same time. And god, did she need fun. Nina noticed Atom staring and she wondered if he was distracted or if he was simply lost in his own thoughts. Taking advantage of the situation, Nina lunged at him, throwing a punch at his abdomen before hooking a leg around the back of his and tugging, hoping that it would cause him to fall to the ground. Unfortunately, Nina didn't unhook her leg in time and went tumbling back down with Atom, landing on top of him. The skin on skin contact drove her crazy and she pushed against his chest so she could sit up. "See? On your back again," she teased.
