Starting off with a compliment; she liked it. It could lead to many stabs at her personality and person as a whole, but he was appealing to any narcissistic qualities within her. Nina was anything but narcissistic but with the right words, her ego could certainly be stroked. It was him calling her a survivor that made her really appreciate what he was saying. Above all else, she was a survivor. She had survived her mother being floated for something she had done. She had survived crashing down onto Earth and she had survived the death of her father. Although, she really wasn't too torn up about her father, seeing as the two had never really gotten along. She couldn't help but to lightly chuckle at his comment about her being able to defend herself if he decided to pull his weapon on her. Nina had to thank her training for that fortunate reflex.
"Perhaps," she said with a nod of her head, agreeing with his words. "But loyalty does mean something to me. So while you may be correct in assuming that I would turn my back on you the moment you were no longer useful to my survival, you could also be wrong." It wasn't completely far fetched. "Because I think that you appreciate loyalty as much as I do. I think that when you're loyal to someone, you take it seriously. That's rare," she said with a shrug.

She was right. He did appreciate loyalty. If he hadn’t developed that already his mothers and Lexas betrayal would have pushed him there. As well as honor. He wanted to do honorable by his people and others, which was why he helped Clarke to repay his debt to Lexa, even though it could be argued he had no debt at all. She had betrayed him first, banished him for simply being the wrong person in the wrong family. It was all just a mess. “You owe no loyalty to me.” Roan pointed out. Not yet at least. He hoped to change that.
“I take it seriously, indeed. Loyalty is important in this world. But all too rare. I want the best for my people, I want to lead by example. Which means you can be sure of my intentions, but all words, right? I will show this to you, too.” And to her people. “I have interest in stability… and in your peoples abilities. Our people can only profit from one another. So one step at a time.” Roan almost gently patted her back. “I promise you safety in all cases and as you know loyalty means a lot to me, I will stay loyal to this word. On top of that, I will honor it alone, because I know how it feels like to be betrayed.”

He was right. She didn't owe him any loyalty. Hell, they still barely knew one another. But Nina wasn't naive. She knew that there was a chance the two could grow close during her time with Ice Nation. She wasn't counting on it, but she wasn't ruling it out either. Nina didn't know how long she would be with Roan so she had no idea what she was really walking into. She listened to him speak, taking his words to heart. He knew how rare true loyalty was and so did she. Nina believed she was loyal to her people, but she knew that if it came down to it she would really only stand by a few. There were a few that she had stood by through this whole endeavor and she knew that if it came down to it, that's who she would side with. But Nina hoped their people wouldn't divide for any reason. They needed to stay together if they were going to survive.
"Agreed," Nina said with a nod of her head. She knew that while Roan may have all of these beliefs and hopes now, there was no telling how things would go once he actually began to rule his people. Power changed people. She knew that much because she had seen it all too often within her own group of people. Some handled power better than others and Nina hoped, for everyone's sake, that Roan was one of those people. "How long has it been since you've been to Azgeda?" Nina asked.

The question shocked him. He kept forgetting that her people had been filled in by wanheda. So they knew he had been banished. But on the other hand so many people did not care about any of this. He was now king, he had to act the part. The emotional baggage that came with finally returning home, it was something his people wouldn't acknowledge, but hers. Somehow they did. They valued strength but saw vulnerability as a form of strength, too. It fascinated him, if he was honest. It always reminded him of something he saw: A mother presenting her neck, to protect her child. This vulnerability was a show of ultimate strength in Roans eyes - and something he never had.
"Officially it's been years. Heda came just out of a war with my mother. I was banished then." But it was more political. "In reality it was a few months ago. I sought refuge with a family close to the border. They helped me treat a wound, welcomed me with open arms. They spoke about hope for my reign. Up until recently that would have been impossible, though." Now it was possible. "So the last time I was there undisguised and not as someone they could have killed any second was years ago. I didn't bother truly counting. It was the day I was banished."
