From the Beginning

Nina shrugged her shoulders. She had never thought about going to Earth either but she had a small bucket list for the Ark as well. One of which had been to surpass her father in ranking in the Guard. While she knew it was highly unlikely, it had never stopped her from wanting to accomplish it. Nina listened to Jasper's words and nodded her head as she listened. She hadn't thought about swimming, to be quite honest, but she knew that would be an experience that no one on the Ark could compete with. Then again, she supposed all of the things she did down here were completely out of reach for those on the Ark. She grinned and laughed when he said skinny dipping. "I'm stealing that one too!" She said with a grin. "Oh man, you're just full of good ideas." First the being boned comment and now the skinny dipping. Nina couldn't deny that she was super curious to see what other great ideas Jasper appeared to have.

"You're welcome," she said with a grin, thinking about their little run in the woods. It had been spur of the moment, potentially dangerous, but exhilarating nevertheless. She didn't think much about his getting laid comment, but begun to wonder if he was a virgin or not. She didn't know how long he had been locked up, so he could be, and that wasn't his fault. Instead, Nina decided not to make a big deal out of it. "Yes!" She exclaimed. "Under the stars. Corny, but pretty cool," she said. "On the beach, like that drink they used to have back on Earth!" She had forgotten about that one.

Jasper chuckled when she said he was stealing her skinny dipping idea. They were having fun again, even as he was keeping a lookout for their friends. The sun was starting to set, and they'd need to find somewhere to stay for the night, and kindling for a fire. He started picking up sticks and fallen branches, and carrying them if they felt dry enough.

He made a face when she said something about sex on the beach, but he laughed a moment later. "That sounds awful. Under the stars, sure, but I don't want sand in all my orifices," he joked. "How about you? What's on your list?"

Nina observed him picking up sticks and she mirrored his actions. She figured they were for a fire and she knew that the more she helped, the better off they would be. Chuckling at his sentence, she nodded her head. "Okay I didn't really think about that I guess," she said. She thought about putting a towel down but decided to dismiss the idea altogether. She thought about what else was on her list other than running around. "Well, the ones I already mentioned," she said. What else? "I think it would be cool to see some animals if there are any left. There are some certain things I'd love to see like a sunrise and sunset. I'd like to try and build a house like how they had back before the bombs." She bit the inside of her cheek as she continued to think. "Boring ones, really. Other than the ones involving sex," Nina said with a laugh.

Looking up she spotted something and narrowed her eyes. Was that a cave? Turning in the direction of the cave, or what she believed to be a cave, Nina walked closer until she was at the mouth of it. "Looks like we've found a shelter!" She said, looking over her shoulder at Jasper. She didn't know how deep it went but figured it wasn't really necessary to find out. They just needed to go back enough to stay out of sight and away from the cold air at night.

Jasper listened as she went over her lists. He didn't think he'd want to build a house. He was built for sciences rather than... well, building. "I bet sunrises and sunsets are awesome. I remember seeing pictures of them. Too bad we're not really in a good spot to see one tonight," he said. "Or tomorrow morning." In this dense woods, it would just get dark without any of the pretty colors. "Oh, I want to see a rainbow," he added on. He sort of doubted any animals survived the radiation. If they did though, he wondered if they would be deformed in any way.

He followed her over to where she'd found a cave, grinning. This would be so much better than sleeping in the open. "Nice find," he said sincerely, dropping his wood just inside in a pile. "Put her there!" he said, lifting his hand for a high five, intending to playfully raise it out of her reach if she went for it.

"I bet if we got on top of the drop ship one night we could see the sunset or sunrise!" She pointed out. Now that she thought about it, maybe she didn't want to build a house. Maybe she would just watch someone build a house. She'd have some of the good looking guys build a house without shirts on. Now that sounded like something she could deal with. The idea of a rainbow sounded nice, but she knew that they were rare. Nina laughed a little as she thought about how some people thought you could find a pot of gold at the end of one. It was a myth but she still found it amusing. She thought back to other tales that had been told about Earth and wondered if any of them were true. For the most part, probably not, but she knew that they probably had to stem from somewhere.

Nina reached up to give him a high-five but missed when he pulled his hand away at the last second. "Jasper!" She exclaimed in mock shock. She placed a hand over her heart. "I can't believe you would do that to me. I thought we shared something special!" Nina joked. She dropped her hand from her heart and laughed, going in to fake punch him in the stomach before pulling away at the last second.

Jasper laughed, automatically flinching and trying to block the punch that was pulled at the last second. He laughed again. "Hey, there's no need for violence," he joked, starting to arranged the wood on the cave floor in a way he thought was correct to build a fire. "It's not my fault you're short. Why are short people always so angry?" he teased again.

He focused his attention on getting together some kindling, trying to remember how this worked again. He hoped he could pull it off. Otherwise they'd have to huddle together to keep warm. "Do you see smoke from any other fires out there?" he asked, wondering if Finn and Clarke had settled somewhere for the night. Clarke seemed serious enough that she'd probably paid attention in Earth Skills and could build a fire.

She walked over and sat down across from Jasper as he attempted to put the fire together. "Because we have less room for patience," she said with a grin. His question caused her to get up from her spot on the ground. She walked over to the mouth of the cave and looked around for any smoke signals. She couldn't see anything and knew that the darker it got, the harder it would be to see any sort of smoke. "No," she said with a sigh, returning to their spot in the cave. Nina sat back down across from Jasper and she watched his hands work. Hopefully he could get it going, otherwise they were boned. The more Nina thought about it, the more she realized that it was probably a good skill to have; starting a fire.

"Proposition for you," Nina began, crossing her legs and pulling them closer to her chest. "You teach me how to build a fire and I'll help you cross something off your Earth bucket list." She quirked a brow in question, curious to see if he would take her up on the offer or not. There were really only a few things she could help him with, and considering they had nothing else to do, the idea wasn't completely out of the question. Nina knew Jasper had tried flirting with her when they had first begun their journey and she had brushed it off to the side for the time being, but she still found Jasper to be attractive.

Jasper only snorted at her reply to his teasing question, and watched as she went to look out of the cave. "Damn," he muttered when she said she didn't see anything. He hoped Finn and Clarke were okay. When she sat down next to him and asked him to show her how to start a fire in exchange for helping him cross something off his bucket list, he grinned. "Someone didn't pay attention in Earth Skills," he teased. A lot of people didn't, Jasper knew. It was hard to get people excited to learn something they couldn't use... at least not right away. Jasper liked the science of it, and supposedly the Earth would be survivable in his lifetime. Apparently, it was survivable ahead of schedule, even.

"Sure," he said, and started to work on it, explaining what he was doing with each step. It took him a little longer than he expected to the the first embers going, and he was starting to worry when they finally did. When he saw them, he sucked in a soft breath and smiled, starting to blow on the embers t bring little flames to life. "There you are, sexy things," he said to the flames, grinning as he continued to build the fire, explaining. When the fire was starting to gain size, he sat back again, watching it. He'd done that. It felt really good, actually. He'd only ever seen it done before, but not built one himself.

He held out a hand to gesture toward it. "That is a work of art," he joked, then glanced over at her. "How're my teaching skills?"

Nina laughed. "Well this certain someone preferred training thank you very much. Physical activities had always been my strong suit. Besides, it wasn't like I thought I would ever need to know this stuff," she said, gesturing towards the fire that Jasper was working on. Not once had she ever considered the fact that she would be on Earth at some point in her life. It still had years to go as far as she had been concerned. But apparently the world had other plans and perhaps it was a good thing considering the oxygen crisis the Ark was currently facing. She still found it hard to believe and was a little upset that it had been kept from everyone. It was only Clarke that had revealed the crisis, not Jaha. But Nina was down here and that's all she really cared about. She was alive and wouldn't suffocate to death. Sure, her father was still up there but they didn't really have a relationship. He was a stranger to her. She didn't care if he lived or died.

She had to purse her lips together to keep herself from laughing at how nonchalantly Jasper had responded to her proposal. It was clear that he had no idea what she was talking about, and had probably intercepted the offer as something innocent. She moved her head off to the side and put her mouth against her shoulder, stifling a chuckle. Jasper was absolutely adorable and completely innocent. But she liked him and she liked how he made her laugh. That had been a difficult thing to do as of late, but he had succeeded. The least she could do was repay him in some way.

Nina listened to his words as he talked his way through the process. She took them in and tried to remember everything he was saying and doing. She knew it wouldn't be something she would get right away but she knew it was an important thing to learn. The flames sparked and she grinned over at Jasper, admiring his smile at his success. The fire grew and Nina felt the warmth. It had just started to get cold and the fire was built at the perfect time. Nina laughed and nodded her head. "Excellent," she said, clapping her hands a few times for the delinquent. Remembering her offer, Nina quirked an eyebrow at Jasper as she spoke. "Hey Jas, so what do you think we could do for your bucket list?" She asked. It had to click at some point, didn't it?

Jasper laughed a little when she clapped for him, but he touched his goggles and inclined his head, as if giving her a hat tip. Then she asked what he wanted to do from his bucket list. There wasn't really anything from his bucket list they could do right now. Well, there was, but she hadn't responded to him flirting earlier, and then called him her friend, so he didn't think that was really an option.

He sighed, trying to think back to what he'd said. He'd made the list up off the top of his head, and he wasn't sure he remembered it all. The monuments in DC were probably too far away, if they still existed. He didn't need help climbing a tree. "When we get back, we could watch the sunrise and sunset on the dropship," he suggested. That was her bucket list suggestion, but it sounded nice. "Or if we come across any water tomorrow, we could attempt swimming," he said, smiling faintly as the fire warmed him.

Apparently Nina would have to hit him upside the head with her idea. For someone so smart, he sure was acting awfully dumb. But if he didn't have much experience with girls in the first place then perhaps that was why he wasn't picking up her small hints here and there. Nina dismissed the idea of Jasper being oblivious to her hints because he wasn't all that smart with girls, chalking it up to her not being flirty with him until right now. "Uh huh," she said slowly. Sure, that was certainly something that they could do. But it wasn't what Nina had been referring to and it certainly wasn't something they could do now. She was not tired enough to try to sleep but it was too dark to keep moving, something they had decided already. Which was why she thought her idea was perfect! It would pass the time and it would be helping Jasper get something off his bucket list.

"I was thinking more along the lines of something I can help you with," she said, raising her eyebrows and looking at him over the fire. Nina leaned back and put her weight on her hands that sat on the ground behind her. "Have you done anything with a girl yet, Jasper?" She asked. For all she knew he had never even kissed a girl before. Being twenty-three, Nina had done basically done it all. But having inexperience wasn't something she ever held against someone, least of all Jasper right now. She was older and he had been locked up for who knew how long, so it wasn't like he was getting any ass while in the skybox.

Nina didn't seem so interested in what he was suggesting, and he glanced over at her again as she said she wanted to help him with something, raising her brows. Jasper tried to think of what she could help him back when she leaned back and asked her next question. Jasper's eyebrows shot up. Oh. Ohhhhh. But she hadn't seemed interested before!

In the position she was sitting in now, Jasper's gaze couldn't help darting down to her breasts before looking back up. If she was really suggesting what it sounded like she was suggesting, it wouldn't matter if he was looking at her again. "I've, ah... I've done some things," he said, lifting a hand to scratch the back of his head, feeling a little disoriented. "What happened to your 'friend' Jasper?" he asked, hoping he was reading what she was trying to hint at correctly.

She watched as the wheels turned in his head and his eyebrows shot up. It had finally clicked. Nina had been worried that she would have been forced to literally spell it out for him. But alas, that was no longer an issue as Jasper appeared to understand what she was referring to. Nina kept her eyes trained on him and saw his not so subtle glance at her chest. Nina didn't mind, as she had never been ashamed of her own body, but found it slightly amusing that his mind was already going where it should have been much earlier. Then again, he had tried flirting with her and she hadn't done much about it. Perhaps he had decided that she wasn't interested and had given up, dismissing the mere idea from his mind entirely. Again, it wasn't that she wasn't interested. It was simply because there had been so much else going on that she had been unable to really pay much attention to those around her. Earth had been distracting enough on its own.

A smile crossed her features and she shrugged. "Friends help each other out," she pointed out, quirking a brow. Nina sat back up, wiping the dirt from her hands onto her pants before looking over at him again. "Look, I'm not saying we should get married. I'm just saying that we have time to kill and I'd be more than happy to help you with that bucket list." Nina shrugged her shoulders. "But if you're not comfortable then that's totally fine. There's no shame in that," she explained. Nina wanted him to know that she wasn't pressuring him to do something he wasn't ready to do.

Friends help each other out. Oh. So this was just a casual thing. That wasn't really how Jasper intended to lose his virginity. He always thought he'd mess around until he found someone he loved. Then again, Jasper had never expected to be on Earth, in a cave with a pretty older girl who seemed to be offering herself to him. Earth didn't seem that dangerous so far, but what if they never found safe food or water? There was still a possibility they could die out here. Jasper didn't want to die a virgin, and he was pretty sure he'd enjoy it whether he was in love or not.

"I'm not uncomfortable," he said, a smile creeping onto his face again. "I just gave up on you. You're not the first girl not to flirt back." He wasn't ashamed of that fact. Not every girl was going to be into him, and it didn't hurt his pride to acknowledge that. He shifted to his knees so he could close the distance between them, leaning in close enough to kiss her. "Let's check something else off my list," he breathed, then pressed his lips to hers, parting them against hers as his hand went to her waist.

Nina tilted her head to the side. He had given up on her. Apparently his flirting had been more obvious than she had realized and her lack of a response had not gone unnoticed by the delinquent. Nina would have explained that she was too distracted taking everything else in, but decided against it. There was really no need for excuses at this point. Her intentions had been put out into the open and he could do with them whatever he pleased. He could deny her offer and she wouldn't blame him. Jasper seemed like the type to want feelings involved in something this physical. It was a nice notion but not something Nina really knew of. She had not been in love when she had lost her virginity so it was something she hadn't really considered when it came to Jasper.

Her eyes followed him as he moved closer to her, telling Nina that he was going to take her up on her offer. A small smirk appeared on her lips as she looked at him as he spoke. His willingness certainly hadn't faltered and she was happy for that. She didn't know why, but it was just the way she felt. She pressed her lips against his in return and she felt his hand on her waist. Nina went to her knees to match his position and one of her hands placed itself on his neck. The other went down to the hem of his shirt and moved up, her fingers ghosting across his skin.
