A LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS | ignorance is a weakness that humankind can't afford | TAGGED
| Catelyn was prepared to handle having a child on her own. She and her late husband discussed it; weighing their options when the ark was begging for salvation. Though only in their late twenties, they agreed that a new baby had more potential than they ever could; that sacrificing James to keep their child would be the right decision. Had the earth been uninhabitable then it would have been the right choice... but it turned out that it wasn't. All of Cat's research had been wrong... She missed the biggest piece of the puzzle and had assumed there was no immunity to radiation, even though in space they were exposed to much more than could be tolerated by anyone born on earth. If only her experiments could have been more than a theoretical scrawl on a page. Instead of floating criminals she could have used them for her studies... but the ark was wasteful.
Because of that waste, her husband was dead. Because of that ignorance her baby would be born without a father; and a rocky landing paired with a hysterical group of arkadians made for a stressful situation. Eight months pregnant and alone without a surviving friend made Cat... lonely. For the first time in her life, her lab was lost and her passions had nowhere to cling to besides testing soil and looking for neutralizing agents to combat the toxicity that made the ground infertile. She was a widow, pregnant with a dead mans baby and that was all. Medical bay was her only real source of socialization and that was pitiful. She wondered how long a human could survive, drifting through the camp like this.
She sat at her desk outside under a tarp that was pulled up to block out the elements, hunched over three soil samples which all contained far too much radiation to ever be useful. The disappointment was stressful, but what was worse was the sudden and violent kick seeming aimed for her ribs. "Ahh!" she gasped as she lurched forward; pushing the flimsy table over. It sent her slides and equipment falling to the ground and her to her knees in front of her chair. "Hell... hell of a kick," she said with a gasp as she held her bulging stomach. She wasn't aware that her accident was even witnessed, let alone that the table hit a passerby. A guard.
"Bellamy! Damnit, I'm sorry... I didn't mean to--I mean of course I didn't mean to... that'd be silly I just... well," she stammered as she shifted her position on her knees so she would rest more comfortably while she picked up her discarded materials. "You're not hurt are you? This damned table... it's such a pain." |

Tag: @catelyn whatever THE HELL WE WANT Bellamy was offered his former position in the guard . . . and he took it. He'd once resigned but with what Pike was trying to do for his people, how could he reject it? Bellamy had enough of appeasing the grounders and with this new rule, with the new Chancellor, he hoped they could finally bring an end to this seemingly endless war. With that said, Bellamy had just finished training some of the newest recruits, eager to join the guard. He'd returned the weapons to the armory, and had then decided to do a quick patrol outside the area. It was a busy time, with everything working to build a sustainable lifestyle.
The few months of the ceasefire had allowed them that, but he knew it wouldn't last. Besides, all of this would allow Bellamy to be distracted from what they had lost. From what he had lost. And the strain on his existing relationships. Emerging himself in work disallowed him to dwell on that, and so he welcomed it. Needing to keep busy. What he didn't expect though was a flying table that was suddenly hurled in his direction. Reflexes kicked in and he dodged enough so that only the edge of it smacked him on his face. He features twisted in momentary pain, as hand touching his upper lip to make sure there was no bleeding and that nothing was broken. He would survive it; he'd been through worse. An apology turned his head toward the source as he saw Catelyn on her knees.
Everyone of course knew who she was. Mainly because she would be the first of their people to give birth to a baby on the ground. It marked a new era; a new hope. He hurried to her, crouching down in front of her so that they were at eye level and he was close enough to inspect her. "Are you ok? You alright?" His voice was calm, but it held an underlying tone of concern. He couldn't help but feel instinctually protective of her. Reminded of his mother carrying a child, only this time it was no secret. This time, he wasn't a scared little boy. And he was going to use his experience and capabilities to their full advantage.
His hand reached out to stop her from picking things up. "I got it," he assured her, already standing to his feet to get her table and set it back from where it came, before he started picking up the other things for her. "Do you want me to take you to medical? Maybe you should get checked out," he suggested, hoping it wasn't anything serious but then again . . . she was pregnant. This wasn't exactly his field of expertise when it came to potential medical scenarios for a pregnant woman.

| She was surprised by how quickly concern seemed to sweep him. Yes, people around her knew her as the pregnant woman-- so she was used to the fleeting looks of curiosity and even a slight twinge of protective glances but she'd never actually interacted with somebody who had so much concern for her without even knowing her. It was touching and made a warm smile spread across her usually cold and calculating expression. "Yes, yes I'm okay," she said softly as she got up and rested on the chair once again. She noticed the blood on his lip and wrinkled her nose at her own dramatics... She could have hurt him pretty badly with just a few inches of difference... She knew it didn't need stitched up, but medical could at least clean it so that it didn't get infected.
His words echoed her thoughts when it came to medical bay, but for different reasons. The baby was rolling, kicking and being generally unpleasant, but she knew that it was natural. Before she got pregnant she prepared herself for every possible outcome and every potential feeling, wanting to be ready. She could tell that Bellamy was concerned though... "Maybe, just to be sure everything is okay," she said lightly, though she reached up to lightly move his head to the side so she could examine the cut. "You need to get that cleaned up... This table is far from clean. I'm working with all kinds of chemicals. You should get it looked at when we go." She offered another grin; halfhearted and crooked. "The baby is kicking a lot, it's nothing to worry about. It just got a good hit to the ribs."
Carefully she stood with her hand resting over the bump. She was thankful for the maternity clothing they had found in Mount Weather. With winter coming, their tight jackets and rough clothing would have been so uncomfortable... "Do you want to feel?" she asked him lightly as she closed the lids to some of her samples. She glanced at him with a grateful smile and turned a little. "If that's not weird," perhaps it was, but she doubted he would think so. He was the son of Aurora Blake... he'd been close to pregnancy before. Perhaps that was why he was so concerned for her. |

Tag: @catelyn whatever THE HELL WE WANT Once Bellamy finished setting what he could back on the table, he turned to fully face her, upon hearing her agreement that she should go to medical. Better to be safe than sorry. He paused when she moved his head a little, telling him that he needed to get checked out too. His tongue ran over his lip, tasting the iron from the blood. Perhaps not the smartest thing considering she said she was working with chemicals, but it was a bit too late for that. "I'm sure its fine," he stated dismissively, more concerned about her health and the health of her baby.
"But seeing as I'm going with you, they can take a look if needed." Cause he wasn't going to let her go alone, and was glad that she knew that by her use of the term 'we'. He couldn't imagine what it was like for her, and while he was hardly a comfort . . . he wanted to do help where he could. Be a support where he could. His eyes flickered to her stomach when she asked if he wanted to feel the baby kick. The last time he had felt a baby kick was . . . well, when his mother was pregnant with Octavia. "Not weird at all," he assured. "So long as you don't mind." But considering she was the one who asked, he figured it wasn't a big deal.
He slowly moved his hand to casually rest on her stomach, gliding over a little bit to feel where the best area was. And then he felt it. The kick was enough to cause a small smile to cross his features -- an expression he had not worn since Gena's death. "Amazing," he breathed, thinking of the impact, of the significance. Of how beautiful it was that a life was growing inside of her. He was in awe of it, now having a better understanding of just how precious life was compared to the young boy he had been who just thought it was a bit strange that a little person was in his mother's tummy. "Have you thought of any names yet?" He asked curiously, his hand still resting on her stomach and hoping it wasn't too prolonged to cause her discomfort.

A LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS | ignorance is a weakness that humankind can't afford | TAGGED
| As Bellamy’s hand traced the soft bump, she couldn’t help smiling. The way he looked when the baby kicked... it was pure. It was an expression she hadn’t seen on his face since the Mount Weather attack and it was beautiful. She could feel the baby rolling and pushing against the confines of her stomach under the pressure of Bellamy’s hand. It was almost as if the fleshy little thing was putting on a show for its new fan. She knew about Bellamy... she knew about the sister that he hid under the floor panels. It was a scandalous crime to put it plainly. She wondered how that had to have affected Bellamy; being almost forced to be a parental figure in his younger sisters life at such a young age. She could see that paternal-esk glow burning in his eyes.
“Names,” she murmured lightly and chuckled as she stared at his hand on her bundle of bouncing joy. It was hard to think of any, but at the same time so many had crossed her mind. The real challenge was pinning one down. The flora on earth was incredibly diverse. As the first of the Arkers to be born on the ground she had thought of naming her child after one of the may plants that survived the blast of radiation. A botanical name would be nice. “I was thinking... Basil or Sage for a boy.... Primrose for a girl... Or maybe Hope.” She looked up at him and smiled warmly at the thought. “It seems fitting.... for the first baby born in Arkadia.”
Carefully she stood up to make her way to medical bay with him. Unconsciously she reached out to take his hand just to keep herself stable. “What do you think?” lightly she looked up at him and pushed a strand of hair from her face. “Ever given much thought to baby names?”
