Raven pushed the hair out of her face, quickly pulling it into a haphazard ponytail. Her heart beat hard in her chest, beads of sweat appearing on her forehead. She was nervous and scared but she had to do this. Her stomach grumbled again as if reminding her of her state of hunger. Usually she would wait for her mother to remember she existed but it had been too long. She hadn’t seen her mom in two days and her rations had disappeared along with her as usual. She could no longer just sit and wait and starve to death. Raven needed to take care of herself, she was old enough now, eight years old for goodness sake, perfectly old enough to live independently.
Poking her head around the junction of the hallway, she spotted the tray on a table in the hall. The owner of said tray had stood up and was distracted by someone he recognised. Now was her chance. It was a short window for her to grab the food and run, so she had to do it now. Swallowing hard, Raven willed her legs to move slowly and quietly. Her mouth already watering at the sight of the food, providing her with the incentive to go through with this. She didn’t want to steal but she had to. Her hand was so close, all she had to do was grab the food and run, but that was when she noticed the flaw in her plan. She hadn’t been fast enough. The man was about to turn around and spot her red handed. It was no secret what happened to people who stole, what happened to anyone who broke the law. Raven panicked, tears already stinging her eyes, praying for some sort of distraction to allow her to escape. Oh god, she was going to be floated.

Finn had an easy life it would seem. Loving parents, enough to eat and also no need to be scared for his future. The kid was clever, kind and loveable. People adored him and so did the teachers. He had a bright future ahead of him, dreaming bigger and bigger everyday, even thinking about how earth would be. One day he was walking not far from the main hall in the station when he saw a girl about the same age as himself. He didn’t recognized her but was intrigued by her. It didn’t take him long to realising what she was up to. Stealing was a crime! His parents had taught him that much, maybe the girl didn’t know? Knowing he wouldn’t be able to just stand and watch the girl get caught he started to jump. ”Sir sir” he yelled out, quickly getting noticed. His lips started to shudder and his eyes wetten. He placed himself on the floor looking for help. ”My knee.” More tears appeared as he held his hands on the subjects shortly watching if the girl was safe. The man walked over to little Finn and sat down trying to comfort him.

Raven thanked every god imaginable when she noticed a small boy yell out at the man who could’ve almost gotten her arrested. It was like some sort of miracle. Quickly stuffing the food in her pockets she ran back out of the hall and into the corridor outside. The boy risked himself for her. Some stranger, who didn’t have to help her at all. She was so grateful, but confused. Why did he help her? They’d never met before. Perhaps he wanted something from her. As far as she knew, people only ever did nice things when they wanted something.
Taking some of the food out she eagerly swallowed it down, almost inhaling it in one go. She’d been starved for too long and it was almost painful when it hit her stomach. But it was a good pain, a pain she welcomed. Quietly and patiently she waited for the boy further down the corridor in an empty closet filled with old guard uniforms keeping the door open. To demand what he inevitably wanted in return for what he did. Well, Raven Reyes didn’t like to owe or grovel or even really ask anyone for anything. She was a stubborn girl and she needed him to know that. So when she saw him walk past the door, she quickly yanked him from his collar into the closet and shut the door. Folding her arms across her chest she stood in front of him. “What did you do that for?” she hurriedly whispered, referencing his successful attempt at helping her. “I didn’t need any help you know.” She was blatantly lying of course. If it weren’t for him she would have been arrested on sight. And she knew it.
